The Yorkshire Ripper refused to wash his hands after going to the toilet angering other patients at a psychiatric hospital so much that one tried to stab him, it is alleged.

Serial killer Peter Sutcliffe’s unhygienic habit is said to have disgusted other patients at Broadmoor Hospital.

Reformed criminal Ben Hatchett, who served alongside him at the high-security psychiatric hospital in Berkshire, reported the Yorkshire Ripper's behaviour and said he did it "to wind people up".

Hatchett claimed someone tried to stab Sutcliffe over it.

He told the Daily Star Sunday: “I worked in the cafe at Broadmoor. Every Thursday the Ripper would be one of the ones who would come in for lunch. I had to make his food.

“And he would use the toilet and wouldn’t wash his hands. He would do it when he was in the communal area.

“He just wouldn’t wash his hands. People didn’t like it. He would come out of the toilet and smirk.

“He did it to wind people up.”

Sutcliffe’s dirty habit caused him to be attacked over it, Hatchett claimed.

He added: “Him not washing his hands was the reason someone tried to stab him.

“They tried to stab him in his good eye.”

Sutcliffe was jailed in 1981 after being found guilty of murdering 13 women and attempting to murder seven others.

He was held at Broadmoor between 1984 and 2016 before being moved to Frankland Prison for the last four years of his life.

Sutcliffe died last November aged 74 after testing positive for coronavirus.
