Canadas' Top Military Commander Steps Aside Amid Investigation

Just over two months into the job, Canada's new top military commander has stepped aside. CBC 25 FEB 2021.

Admiral Art McDonald is being investigated by the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service after unspecified allegations were levelled against him.

In a statement, Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan said he takes allegations of misconduct seriously, and he will continue to take strong action on any allegation of misconduct, "no matter the rank, no matter the position."

Sajjan did not reveal the details of the allegations and said he will not comment further because the investigation is ongoing.

Lt.-Gen. Wayne Eyre, who is currently the commander of the army, will step into the role of acting chief of the defence staff.

The allegations against McDonald come as controversy surrounds his predecessor.

Retired chief of the defence staff general Jonathan Vance is also under investigation by the military's National Investigation Service after allegations — first reported by Global News — that he had an inappropriate relationship with a female subordinate.

That investigation is looking into whether Vance violated the code of service discipline, or if any laws were broken.
