Prince Harry is said to be "upset" after the Queen reportedly agreed to remove a number of his and Meghan's royal patronages.

It could see Harry removed from a number of official positions, including his role as Captain General of the Royal Marines.

The patronages are a gift to members of the Royal Family from the Queen, and an announcement over Harry's and Meghan's roles is expected to be made in the coming weeks.

Meghan would also have to relinquish her role as patron of the National Theatre - while Harry could lose his patronage of the Rugby Football Union and the Rugby Football League, reports The Times.

Harry is also honorary air commandant, RAF Honington, and commodore-in-chief, Small Ships and Diving, Royal Naval Command.

It is understood the decision was made as part of a 12-month review agreement struck when they Duke and Duchess of Sussex chose to step down as senior royals last January.

A source close to the couple described Harry's military work as "one of the most important things to him".

They added: "There was no choice. The reality of now being able to have their cake and eat it is finally dawning on him.

"I am sure it is painful for him. He is very upset to be in this spot, but they have made some choices.

"They have lots of exciting things to work on and that can be done with everyone's best wishes."

There is said to be more of a grey area when it comes to their positions with two Commonwealth organisations.

Meghan is patron of the Association of Commonwealth Universities and both she and Harry are president and vice-president of the Queen's Commonwealth Trust.

It follows the announcement made on Valentine's Day that Meghan and Harry are expecting baby number two.

They also have a scheduled interview lined up with Oprah Winfrey for 7 March.

Sources have revealed questions have been raised about the reasons behind the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s decision, as it emerged they have set no limits on their discussions with the US billionaire chat show queen.

Palace insiders alluded to the catalogue of disastrous television interviews with senior royals in recent years - from Prince Andrew on Newsnight to Princess Diana on Panorama - all of which have ended with dire consequences.

One source said: "Questions are of course being asked why Harry would ever think this is a good idea.

"On the one hand he may think that Oprah Winfrey is a trusted friend, despite only meeting her a handful of times, but on the other the history with these sorts of interviews has often ended with disastrous consequences.

"The overriding feeling he will very much live to regret it."
