One of the FBI’s most wanted paedophiles is set to be booted out of Britain.
Gerard Zalewski was arrested on Tuesday at his jail cell where has served half of an eight-year sentence for attacking a British schoolgirl, 13.
Now he will be flown to the United States where he faces up to 20 years behind bars for an attack on a girl the same age there.
A source said: “He has evaded justice for 15 years, he needs to be brought back to the States as soon as possible.
“Once his sentence had passed the midpoint in the UK it was time to get him back.”
Zalewski, who was born in Poland, had fled the US in March 2006.
He had been on bail awaiting sentence in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, after admitting sex with a girl of 13.
In his absence, he was ordered to serve up to 20 years and an arrest warrant was issued.
But the “extremely dangerous” fiend shrugged off a global manhunt and he managed to move to the UK and settle in Kent without raising the suspicion of the authorities.
In June 2016 he travelled to 240 miles to rape a girl he groomed on the web.
During the horrifying attack at a park in Bamber Bridge, near Preston, Lancashire, he taped the victim’s mouth and took snaps.
He was arrested back home in Dartford and in October 2016, he pleaded guilty at Preston Crown Court to two counts of sexual activity with a child, meeting a child following grooming, making indecent photographs and false imprisonment.
FBI agents realised their man had finally been collared - and waited for a suitable time to remove him from our jail system to serve his US sentence.
Westminster court confirmed Zalewski had been arrested on a warrant issued at the request of the USA.
He will appear before the court again at the end of next month via video link in proceedings under the Extradition Act 2003.
