No Icon Strong Earthquake Rattles Southern Peru

Updated 3:37 PM EST, Fri October 28, 2011

A strong 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck Peru on Friday, some 32 miles south-southwest of Ica, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
A tsunami threat was not issued and no immediate damage was reported.
The quake hit roughly 178 miles south-southeast of Lima, the country's capital, and had an estimated depth of almost 22 miles, the USGS said.
In 2007, an 8.0-magnitude quake struck southwestern Peru, killing more than 500 people and injuring more than 1,000.
The most serious damage from that quake was suffered in towns and cities along the country's Pacific coast south of Lima, including Chincha, Canete, Pisco and Ica.
