Joe Biden was declared the winner of the US presidential election on Saturday, confining Donald Trump to only a single term and bringing to a close four tumultuous years in the White House....

President-elect Joe Biden addressed supporters in his home state of Delaware on Saturday in his first speech since winning the US presidential election 2020.

He pledged to bring the nation together saying now is the time for "healing".

Joe Biden has said he is “honoured and humbled” after winning the US Presidential election. He crossed the threshold of 270 Electoral College votes needed by winning the states of Pennsylvania and Nevada.

In a statement the President-Elect said: “In the face of unprecedented obstacles, a record number of Americans voted. Proving once again, that democracy beats deep in the heart of America. It’s time for America to unite. And to heal.”

The election has seen the highest turnout since 1900. Mr Biden has won more than 73 million votes, the most ever recorded for a US presidential candidate.

The result denies Donald Trump a second term after a divisive presidency defined by the coronavirus pandemic, bitter culture wars and social unrest.

There’s been a lot of congratulations from world leaders sent to president-elect Joe Biden, not all quite as barbed as those from Iran.

Reuters report Iranian state media quoting president Hassan Rouhani saying that the next US administration should use the opportunity to compensate for president Donald Trump’s mistakes.

“Trump’s damaging policy has been opposed...by the American people. The next US administration should use the opportunity to make up for past mistakes...Iran favours constructive interaction with the world,” Rouhani said.
