Love & Drugs in Victorian London - Elizabeth Siddal - The Beauty in the Bathtub

ObsoleteOddity

This is the true story of Elizabeth Siddal, who was to establish her place in history as the the model for Ophelia, a famous painting John Everett Millais.

She would become the favourite model for a group of artists called the Pre-Raphaelites.

This group roamed London looking for girls to be the models for their paintings. When Elizabeth with her striking red hair was spotted, her world changed overnight.

Being the model for Ophelia earned her more than an entire years wages as a milliner's apprentice.

She very soon had an affair with Dante Gabriel Rossetti, one of the leading members of the group; but this affair was turbulent...jealousy and opiate use caused the lovers to self destruct.

Even after Elizabeth was dead, her presence haunted Gabriel continuously until his own death years later from constant drug and alcohol abuse.
