German prosecutors said on Thursday they believe Madeleine is dead, and they are investigating a 43-year-old German man on suspicion of murder.

The prime suspect in Madeleine McCann's disappearance and suspected murder lived in a "disgusting" and "absolutely vile" farm building, and left behind wigs and exotic clothing when he abruptly moved out, it is claimed.
The German man, now 43, was "always a bit angry" and rented the ramshackle building from a British man two miles from the Praia da Luz resort where Madeleine vanished aged three in May 2007.
German prosecutors said on Thursday they are investigating the man on suspicion of murdering Madeleine and they believe she is dead.

It was a blunder that meant the prime suspect in Madeleine McCann's abduction spent a decade at liberty. The 43-year-old German man suspected of murdering the three-year-old was discounted by Portuguese police just months after her disappearance.
It can be revealed that the convicted child sex offender, drug dealer and burglar - named as Christian B - was first investigated by Portugal's Policia Judiciaria at the time.
But, as The Telegraph UK Crime Correspondent Martin Evans reports, he was ruled out when detectives changed the focus of their investigation and wrongly declared Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, to be official suspects.

The German national is known to have been in and around the area on the Algarve coast at the time Madeleine went missing from the resort in Praia de Luz she was staying in with her family.
German authorities said yesterday a half-hour phone call was made to the suspect's Portuguese mobile phone around an hour before Madeleine is believed to have gone missing.
Scotland Yard has released pictures of a vehicle linked to the suspect, as British investigators urge the public to come forward with any information.
The suspect has been linked to an early 1980s VW T3 Westfalia camper van - with a white upper body and yellow skirting, registered in Portugal - which was pictured in the Algarve in 2007.
Scotland Yard said he was driving the vehicle in the Praia da Luz area in the days before Madeleine's disappearance and is believed to have been living in it for days or weeks before and after May 3.
He has also been linked to a 1993 Jaguar XJR6 with a German number plate seen in Praia da Luz and surrounding areas in 2006 and 2007.
The day after Madeleine went missing, the suspect had the car re-registered in Germany under someone else's name, although it is believed the vehicle was still in Portugal.
