Daily Mirror UK, 12 MAY 2020

A mysterious new coronavirus-related illness has hit the headlines this week, after several cases were seen in children across the UK.

Parents and carers should watch out for rashes

At least 12 British children are thought to have been hit by the illness, which is being described as an ‘inflammatory syndrome’, similar to Kawasaki disease and toxic shock syndrome.

Whilst you may have heard of toxic shock syndrome, Kawasaki disease is lesser-known.

The NHS explained: “Kawasaki disease is a condition that mainly affects children under the age of 5. It's also known as mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome.”

Now, a diagram has emerged, highlighting the key symptoms of Kawasaki disease that parents should be aware of.

Kawasaki disease has six key symptoms:
  1. Fever for more than 5 days
  2. A rash
  3. Swollen glands in the neck
  4. Dry, cracked lips
  5. Red fingers or toes
  6. Red eyes

Meanwhile, children may also experience diarrhoea as a result of Kawasaki disease.

The alert to doctors in the UK said: “The cases have in common overlapping features of toxic shock syndrome and atypical Kawasaki Disease with blood parameters consistent with severe COVID-19 in children.

“Abdominal pain and gastrointestinal symptoms have been a common feature as has cardiac inflammation.”

Kawasaki disease causes the blood vessels to become inflamed and swollen, which can lead to complications in the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart
If you notice these symptoms in your child, it’s important to seek medical help as soon as possible.

The NHS advises: “It's best if treatment begins as soon as possible. The sooner treatment starts, the quicker the recovery time and there's less risk of complications developing.

“Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), a solution of antibodies, and aspirin are the 2 main medicines used to treat Kawasaki disease.”

Coronavirus was ALSO found in human faeces
more than a month after patients tested negative
