The Black Death caused the most devastating pandemic of bubonic plague in history. It resulted in the deaths of up to 200 million people throughout Eurasia in just a few years.
Peaking in Europe between 1347 and 1351, the highly contagious disease spurred desperate cities to employ a new kind of physician >The self-styled plague doctors. They were either substandard medicos or newly graduated physicians with little or no experience.
Some had no authorised medical qualification at all.
