NAMBOUR is set for a day time winter maximum of 31 degrees as a high pressure system over south-east Queensland continues to dictate weather conditions.

The Sunshine Coast's hot and cold winter will become more extreme as we head into next week, but surprisingly we've had hotter August days and don't need to reach for the history books to locate them.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster James Thompson said Maroochydore dropped to 5.8 degrees this morning with Gympie and the Sunshine Coast hinterland lower still at 2-3 degrees.

Today's maximum will peak at 25 degrees before the coastal fringe jumps to 27 degrees on Friday and then 28 degrees on Saturday.

The lingering high pressure system over south-east Queensland will push day time maximums to 29 degrees on the beach by Wednesday, seven degrees above average but still below the record 35 degrees recorded in August, 2009.

Inland at Nambour on Wednesday a 31 degree maximum is expected, eight degrees above average while Ipswich will hit 33 and Brisbane 30.

Mr Thompson said there was no rain on the horizon and despite a 10% chance of a shower Sunday that too was unlikely.

He said hot Augusts occurred occasionally but the higher temperatures were generally recorded later in the month.

Winds tomorrow will reach 25kmh from the north north east before becoming light later in the afternoon with a 27 degree peak coming off a 10 degree overnight low.

Saturday will be sunny with light winds throughout on what will be a summery day peaking at 28 while Sunday will also be windless but a slightly cooler 26 degrees.

Clear skies are again predicted for Monday with south west winds turning south east to 20kmh before they swing north east on Tuesday. Both days will have peaks of 27 degrees before the heat really sets in Wednesday.

There is next to no chance of surf but conditions on the water should be ideal for fishing.

Might be good for those on the beach but not inland.
