Europe have won the 40th Ryder Cup against the United States at Gleneagles. They crossed the finishing line when Jamie Donaldson won his singles contest with Keegan Bradley 5&4 following victories earlier in the day for Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell and Martin Kaymer to fend off any chance of an American fightback.

The Originators of The Ryder Cup (UK, in 1927), = home side,,, were overwhelming favourites with a 10-6 overnight lead, but saw Graeme McDowell three down after five to Jordan Spieth in the opening match and the unbeaten Justin Rose four down after six to Hunter Mahan.

At one point the United States were ahead in six early matches but McIlroy was an approximate eight under par in thrashing Rickie Fowler 5&4 to put the first European point on the board and fellow Northern Irishman McDowell won five out of six holes from the 10th to complete a remarkable 2&1 victory.

Rory McIlroy of Europe punches the air in triumph at Gleneagles

Quote:

Rory McIlroy WON 5&3 against Rickie Fowler
The world No1 was in complete control, sublime from tee to green as he carded seven birdies and an eagle to blitz to victory and get Europe’s first singles point of the day.
Graeme McDowell WON 2&1 against Jordan Spieth
McDowell drew on steely inner strength to rally from three down against the upstart Texan. Carded five birdies between the 8th and 15th to set up Europe’s second point of the day.
Henrik Stenson LOST 1 UP against Patrick Reed
Reed the Texan rookie rounded out what has been a brilliant debut Ryder Cup for him with a birdie at the last to come from behind and put the USA’s first point of the day on the board
Martin Kaymer WON 4&2 against Bubba Watson
Kaymer finished his day’s work and his tournament in stunning style with a chip in for eagle on the par-5 16th. He’d led since the third against an out-of-sorts Watson.
Thomas Bjorn LOST 4&3 against Matt Kuchar
Bjorn was never in this match, with Kuchar taking a lead with a birdie on the second. An absolutely stunning eagle on the eighth put Kuchar totally in control, and he eased home with three to spare.
Justin Rose HALVED with Hunter Mahan
Rose’s awesome display at this event ended with this impressive half, courtesy of six birdies from seven holes after being four down after seven. Four points from five matches and no losses.
Stephen Gallacher LOST 3&1 against Phil Mickelson
Gallacher bounced back from his day 1 trouncing on his debut to take an early lead, then reel in a deficit of two, but Mickelson hit a hat-trick of birdies from the 14th to assert his authority.
Jamie Donaldson WON 4&3 against Keegan Bradley
Donaldson hit what he admits was ‘the wedge shot of my life’ on the 15th to guarantee a birdie - and the point Europe needed to win the Ryder Cup after a brilliantly dominant day’s work.
Sergio Garcia WON 1 UP against Jim Furyk
Three birdies and an eagle in the last five holes saw Garcia overturn a long-held Furyk lead. Highlights: a stunning tee shot on the 4th, the eagle putt and wonderful iron shots on 16 and 18.
Ian Poulter HALVED against Webb Simpson
Two halves from three matches is not the kind of delivery many expect from The Postman but this was a creditable half after a match of ebb and flow that was salvaged on the last.
Lee Westwood LOST 3&2 against Jimmy Walker
Consistent golf wasn’t enough to win points at this remarkable Ryder Cup, and Westwood’s consistency here, with and six birdies and just one bogey was bettered by rookie Walker’s.
