Race Car FINAL Report on Schumachers' Health as Brother Ralf Speaks Out

Hopes fade for Schumacher's recovery amid fears he may remain in a 'persistent vegetative state' forever but his family say he's a 'fighter and will not give up'

  • F1 legend has been in a medically induced coma for nearly four weeks
  • Neurologist: 'Every day the chances decline that situation is improving'
  • Austrian media speculate that seven-time champion has Apallic Syndrome
  • Family says they are 'deeply moved' by support from fans around the world
By Daily Mail UK, 22 January 2014

Fears are growing that Michael Schumacher could remain in a 'persistent vegetative state' for the rest of his life even if he wakes up from his coma.

The Formula One legend has been in intensive care since his skiing accident in France nearly four weeks ago.
He was placed into an artificially induced coma shortly after the crash to help his brain heal, but such measures normally last only a maximum of two weeks.
Jean-Marc Orgogozo, Professor of Neurology at the University of Bordeaux, said: 'Every day, every week in a coma the chances decline that the situation is improving'.
One Austrian website reported Schumacher, 45, may suffer from Apallic Syndrome or persistent vegetative state.

Improvement: Schumacher is in a stable condition after suffering severe head injuries in a skiiing accident

Support act: Schumacher's wife Corinna insists her husband is a 'fighter' who will not give up

But his family insisted he was a 'fighter' as they poured out their heartfelt thanks to fans around the world on his webpage on Tuesday.

'We all know: he is a fighter and will not give up!' said his family, adding: 'We are deeply moved that there is no let up in the good wishes for Michael from around the world.

'That gives us strength. Thank you all of you!'

But the support of his wife Corinne, 44, his two teenaged children, brother and closest friends cannot mask the fact that 23 days in an artificial coma means that he is far from anywhere near recovery.
A persistent vegetative state is one in which patients with severe brain damage are in a state of partial arousal rather than true awareness.

'Deeply moved': Schumacher's Rolf Schumacher and brother Ralf arrive at Grenoble Hospital earlier this month. His family have issued a heartfelt thank you to fans around the world for their support

Strain: Corinna Schumacher and their children have been maintaining a constant bedside vigil since his crash

This means that if doctors do bring him out of his artificially induced coma he would be unable to speak, move or feed himself.
The format.at news website said; 'More than three weeks after the tragic skiing accident of the seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher, hope dwindle for a full recovery.
'For more than three weeks now Schumacher lies in a medically induced coma at the University Hospital in Grenoble.

He is fed there with probes, washed daily and moved again and again to avoid a bed sores.'

Fans hold vigil outside Schumacher's hospital

Probe: Investigators at the site of Schumacher's crash earlier this month where he smashed his head on a rock while skiing off-piste in Meribel, France

It goes on to speculate that the 'severe damage' he suffered to his brain in a ski accident on December 29 could result in the permanent vegative state suffered by around 10,000 of his German countrymen.
This would mean, if and when he is brought out of the coma by his medical team, 'that his condition would hardly be different from the medically induced coma'.

Apallic Syndrome is always the result of a severe brain injury. The chance of recovery from Apallic Syndrome are far below 50 per cent.'
Schumacher's condition remains stable but there is a firewall of silence from his medical team about the intense battle being waged to try to bring him back to normality.

Get well soon! Cologne and Schalke stars hold out a banner wishing Michael Schumacher good health

As Schumacher enters his fourth week in such a state neurological experts are starting to doubt whether he might ever recover sufficiently to be brought out of his sleep.

Meanwhile, his family have paid tribute to Bundesliga sides Cologne and Schalke on the Formula One legend’s official website.

Players from both sides held up a banner which read ‘Get Well Soon! You can do it, Michael’ prior to their friendly on Saturday in honour of the 45-year-old German, who is a Cologne supporter.

The message from the seven-time champion’s family is the first in over a fortnight and comes just days after it was confirmed that he is in a stable condition at Grenoble Hospital.

Quote:
CHANCES OF RECOVERING FROM APALLIC SYNDROME BELOW 50%

Apallic Syndrome - or persistent vegetative state - occurs when a patient with severe brain damage remains in a state of partial arousal rather than true awareness after waking from a coma.

Patients can breathe on their own and circulate because their brainstem remains intact, but they are largely unresponsive to stimulation.
The chance of recovery from Apallic Syndrome are far below 50 per cent.
There is no treatment, but a person can live for many years with the right medical care.

Brain injury patients are placed into artificial comas to reduce the amount of oxygen that flows into the brain, thus making it work less and giving it time to heal.
Such comas usually last for a maximum of two weeks, although there have been instances of patients being under longer.

Update re: PhOtOs-F1 Michael Schumacher Leaves Hospital >Returns Home

Neurologists warn Michael Schumacher now seems Unlikely to Make a Full Recovery as his agent insists he is 'Still in Wake up Phase'

  • The 45-year-old fell while skiing in France and hit his head
  • Doctors removed blood clots from his brain but had to leave the deep ones
  • Last month doctors began process of withdrawing sedatives to wake him up
  • His agent, Sabine Kehm, said today: 'Michael is still in the wake-up phase'
By Daily Mail UK, 1 March 2014

Neurologists have warned that Michael Schumacher now seems unlikely to make a full recovery after spending nearly two months in a drug-induced coma.
The 45-year-old Schumacher fell while skiing in France and hit the right side of his head on a rock, cracking his helmet.
Doctors operated to remove blood clots from his brain, but some were left because they were too deeply embedded.

The racer with his wife Corrina

Nearly two months after Michael Schumacher suffered serious head injuries in a skiing accident.
Some neurologists say the seven-time Formula One champion seems unlikely to make a full recovery.

The seven-time Formula One champion's condition stabilised after he was placed in the coma.
Late last month, doctors began the process of withdrawing sedatives to try to wake him up.

His agent, Sabine Kehm, said in an email today that 'Michael is still in the wake-up phase' and that 'this phase can be long.'

Schumacher's family has released few details of his condition to protect his privacy.

'It does not bode well,' said Dr. Tipu Aziz, professor of neurosurgery at Oxford University who is not connected to Schumacher's care.
'The fact that he hasn't woken up implies that the injury has been extremely severe and that a full recovery is improbable.'

His agent, Sabine Kehm, said in an email today that 'Michael is still in the wake-up phase' and that 'this phase can be long'

Patients who have had major head injuries are sometimes put in a drug-induced coma to give the brain a chance to heal; a coma reduces the need for blood flow and may help the swelling go down.
Aziz said doctors typically try every few days to bring someone out of a coma.

'If you don't start getting any positive signs, that becomes very worrisome,' he said, adding that Schumacher's doctors are probably doing regular brain scans to look for signs of activity - though such signs may be difficult to detect if he is still being sedated.

Other experts said it was premature to make an accurate prognosis.

'About 90 percent of the recovery is made within nine to 12 months, so this is still early days' .

Anthony Strong, an emeritus chair in neurosurgery at King's College London. 'The longer someone is in a coma, the worse their recovery tends to be.'

Now that several weeks have passed since the accident, doctors may also have a better idea of how the rest of Schumacher's brain is doing.

'MRI scans can show any secondary deterioration in the brain structure,' said Dr. Colin Shieff, a neurosurgeon at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London and a trustee for Headway, a British brain injury charity.

He said other parts of Schumacher's brain that weren't directly affected by the accident might now be starting to show worrying signs that may not have been visible before.

Shieff said that if Schumacher does eventually come out of the coma, he probably would face significant disabilities because of the length of time he has already spent comatose.

While there have been rare instances of people emerging from comas months and years later with the ability to communicate, Shieff was doubtful that would be the case with Schumacher.

He said the cases where comatose people made a surprising recovery had mostly suffered things like poisoning, strokes or failed resuscitation attempts.

Treatment: Schumacher is currently being kept under anaesthetic at the University Hospital (above) in France

Michael Schumacher’s Head Injury Caused by GoPro Camera,
-French Journalist Says

14 October 2014

Did a GoPro cause Schumacher’s traumatic head injuries? Source: NewsComAu

F1 LEGEND Michael Schumacher’s traumatic head injuries were caused by GoPro camera mounted to his helmet when he fell in a December skiing accident, according to a new report.

French journalist Jean-Louis Moncet said had been in contact with Schumacher’s son, Mick, who passed on the latest development.

“The problem for Michael was not the hit, but the mounting of the Go-Pro camera that he had on his helmet that injured his brain,” Moncet told a French radio station.

London’s The Telegraph reported earlier this year that the GoPro may have been an issue.

Experts from ENSA, the world-renowned ski and climbing academy in the French ski resort of Chamonix, conducted tests on whether the camera weakened the helmet on impact.

“The helmet completely broke. It was in at least two parts. ENSA analysed the piece of the helmet to check the material, and all was OK,” a source close to the investigation told The Telegraph.
“But why did it explode on impact? Here the camera comes into question. The laboratory has been testing to see if the camera weakened the structure.”

Moncet also quoted Mick Schumacher, 15, of saying the seven-time F1 world champion was waking up “very slowly” from his medically induced coma.

“Although things are going at a slow pace, he has a lot of time, I would say he has his whole life in front of him to get back on track,” Moncet added.
Schumacher, 45, is being treated at his Switzerland home following six months of care in a French hospital.

Michael Schumacher’s Doctor Says F1 Hero Could Recover in Three Years

  • Jean-Francois Payen treated Schumacher immediately after his accident
  • He said the F1 star is no longer in a coma and is slowly getting better
  • Schumacher is still being treated at home by team of 15 specialists
  • It is understood the former champ remains immobile and unable to speak
Daily Mail UK, 23 October 2014

Recovering: Michael Schumacher could recover from his brain injury within three years, says a doctor who treated him just after his ski accident

A French doctor who treated Michael Schumacher after the F1 champ's ski accident has predicted a possible recovery within three years.
Jean-Francois Payen, a doctor at the Grenoble hospital that treated Schumacher after his injury in December 2013, visited the Schumacher family at home in Switzerland.

The 45-year-old is being treated at home after spending six months in a medically-induced coma following the accident in Meribel, France.

Dr Payen, who cared for Schumacher for six months after the crash, said the former race car driver is no longer in a coma and is slowly getting better.
'Life after a head injury is punctuated by stages,' Payen told RTL radio on Thursday. He predicted a convalescence of one to three years.
'We hope, but we have to give him time.'

It comes after Schumacher's 15-year-old son Mick earlier this month passed on news that his father was 'waking up very slowly.'

French F1 commentator Jean-Louis Moncet told Europe 1 radio station: 'I saw his son and he told me that Schumi is waking up very slowly; very slowly.
'Although things are going at a slow pace, he has a lot of time, I would say he has his whole life in front of him to get back on track.'

The seven times world champion returned to his home with his wife and children two months ago after being discharged from a rehabilitation clinic in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Schumacher spent time in the rehab clinic after coming out of his medically-induced coma following the accident, which left him with catastrophic brain injuries.

Updates on his condition have been few and far between. After he was moved home, Schumacher's manager Sabine Kehm said there was a 'long and difficult' road ahead.

Schumacher poses with his wife Corinna: The former F1 champ is being cared for by a team of 15 experts at his home at a cost of Ł100,000 a month. It is understood he remains immobile and unable to speak

Daily Mail UK, 30 November 2014

The Benetton Formula One car that launched the career of legendary multiple world champion Michael Schumacher is set to be auctioned off.

A 23-year-old Schumacher raced this very car to his first ever podium finish at the last Mexican Grand Prix in his debut F1 season back in 1992.
And racing fans will have the opportunity to buy a piece of F1 history when the Benetton-Ford B191B goes under the hammer at Bonhams Bond Street sale on Sunday.

The car, that is in full working order and in almost the exact same condition as when it was last driven by Schumacher, will set you back as much as Ł300,000, experts are predicting.
Schumacher's third-place finish in Mexico kick-started a career of unprecedented success. The German won seven drivers' championships during a ten-year domination of the sport between 1994 and 2004.
He also achieved a staggering 91 race wins, 40 more than any other driver in the history of F1.

The 22-year-old F1 car is still in full working order and in the same condition as when Schumacher last drove it

The car was shortly retired after Schumacher claimed his first podium finish in 1992

The Benetton was powered by a Ford 3.5-litre V8 engine with a whopping 730 horse power

'Chassis 6 is highly respected as the Benetton that took Schumacher to his first podium position,' said James Knight, Bonhams International Head of Motoring.
'But, that's not where the story ends, for this was also the car that took three-time Formula One World Champion driver, Brazil's Nelson Piquet, through his last Grand Prix on the beautiful Adelaide street and parkland circuit in the 1991 season.'

'The Long Goodbye'
-Heartbroken Friends Speak Out About Michael Schumacher

FRIENDS of Michael Schumacher have voiced concerns about raising hopes over the Formula 1 star's future.

9 December, 2014

Michael Schumacher's manager Sabine Kehm announced recently that he was no longer in a coma and was on "the long process of recovery".
Quote:
As time goes on it becomes less and less likely that Michael will emerge to any significant extent
Dr Gary Hartstein
However, speaking anonymously, a long-time friend of the Schumacher family said:

"He didn’t die in the accident and he didn’t die during the two emergency operations that followed it.
"He came out of the coma and he has had periods of awakening where he is able to make the smallest of nods.
"The question remains, however, about how much improvement can be expected in the coming months and years. Will he speak again? Will he walk again? Will he be able to feed and dress himself?
"The doctors don’t know. No one can know.
"The probability is that he will never be the man he was before the accident. That much is starkly clear."

Michael Schumacher now has a team of 15 medical experts treating him at a special clinic built in the grounds of his mansion home, in Switzerland.
The tailored medical facilities also house a room for the driver's father – who has moved from Germany to be close to his son.

After remaining in a coma for 159 days, Michael Schumacher relies on machines and tubes to feed, breathe and pass waste for him.
Care costs are estimated to run at over Ł100,000 a week in wage bills and medical equipment rental.
Each day Schumacher, 45, is massaged for hours in an effort to stimulate muscle mass and is assessed every hour for improvements.

A former medical delegate for the Formula 1 World Championship Dr Gary Hartstein has slammed the uplifting updates from Schumacher's management.
He said:

"We are told, with what seems to be a bit of a triumphal air, that Michael is no longer in a coma."

But pointing out that the sportsman's coma was artificially-induced, said:

"I cannot help but think this is highly cynical use of language, using the truth to convey an impression that is almost certainly false.
"I cannot help but think that if Michael had emerged at all from the minimally conscious state we would be told that he is having problems expressing himself and will work hard to get better or that he is having to learn to walk, read and write all over again.
"This all leaves a very bad taste in my mouth and huge sadness for Michael’s family.
"As time goes on it becomes less and less likely that Michael will emerge to any significant extent."

Asked about life-expectancy, Dr Hartstein – who believes the decorated driver is still for all intents and purposes – said:

"Life expectancy for a comatose patient who does not improve neurologically is measured in months to a relatively few years."

The world, Dr Hartstein said, is now watching the "long goodbye" of its greatest racing star.

The media-blackout around the racer's recovery – including special tents erected to prevent paparazzi shots of the star outside in his wheelchair – means the majority of the Schumacher's legions of fans still believe he is, albeit slowly, on the road to recovery.

Paying tribute to his dear friend, Lewis Hamilton wrote to him:

"Dear Michael, You are always in my prayers. Prayers of hope that you pull through this difficult time."

Jenson Button said:

"When I think of Michael Schumacher I think of two things.
"The first is one of my earliest memories of being in Formula 1 driving out of the pit lane in Melbourne and seeing Michael’s red Ferrari ahead of me scattering the leaves as he drove beneath the trees at the approach to turn three.
"The second thing I think about is that familiar red car snaking about in my mirrors. Michael was such a formidable racer... relentlessly competitive. Always there for him."

Wife Corinna would be thrilled even to see her husband in a wheelchair, by next summer, friends have claimed.

Speaking anonymously to The Daily Mail, they said:

"Even to see him sitting upright would make things seem so much better. Until then she will be simply thankful that at least he is at home, surrounded by the family who love him and pray daily for his recovery."

Update re: PhOtOs-Schumacher Progress Painfully Slow >Care Costs Spiral

Shizuo Kambayashi/Associated Press, 1 Jan 2015

Twelve months on from his skiing accident in the French Alps, Michael Schumacher'a manager says the seven-time Formula One champion faces a "long fight" on his road to recovery.
Monday (Dec. 29) marks the one-year anniversary of Schumacher's accident in Meribel. The head injury suffered that day saw the 45-year-old put into an induced coma, which he has since come out. He is now reportedly battling to recover bodily functions, per Reuters

Shuji Kajiyama/Associated Press

There had been hopes that Schumacher was making some progress, but Sabine Kehm is quoted in the report stating that a long journey lies ahead:

"We need a long time. It’s going to be a long time and a hard fight. He is making progress appropriate to the severity of the situation."

LUCA BRUNO/Associated Press

Kehm felt the need to address the public on Schumacher's condition after claims from Philippe Streiff, a former Formula One driver who became a quadriplegic after suffering an accident of his own in 1989.
Speaking to French newspaper Le Parisien, Streiff is alleged to have spoken with Schumacher's wife, Corinna, and surgeon Gerard Saillant, noting the German "had yet to recover the power of speech" but was "nevertheless starting to recognise those close to him."

The Frenchman went on to say that Schumacher's movement was limited but speculated that "long term...he could hope one day to walk with crutches."

Claude Paris/Associated Press/Associated Press

Streiff

Kehm insists Streiff has had no contact with Schumacher's entourage, however, dubbing it "factually wrong" that the 59-year-old had spoken with those he claims to have, adding:

"I cannot confirm that [report]. I can only confirm that I do not know where Mr Streiff has his information from because he has no contact with us and he never has."

Dr. Saillant would appear to confirm Kehm's dismissal, according to Agence France-Presse saying that, in the past 12 months, he hasn't had contact of any sort with Streiff:

"For a year, I have never had any contact, verbal, written or physical with Phillipe Streiff."

Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski posted a tribute to Schumacher via his official Twitter account, encouraging his compatriot to continue the "long fight"

During his racing career, Schumacher displayed grit, determination and a great deal of fight, all the hallmarks required to reach the pinnacle of a sport in the manner he did.
A year after the his accident, the sporting world continues to hope Schumacher's recovery progresses, but patience is required, as stated by Kehm.

Update re: PhOtOs-Schumacher Progress Painfully Slow >Care Costs Spiral

Michael Schumacher 'Cries When he Hears his Children's Voices'...

His 46th Birthday was on Saturday...

Formula One icon cannot speak but can communicate with his eyes, report claims

Fans of Michael Schumacher gathered outside the hospital in Greenoble to mark his 45th birthday last year

By Telegraph Sport

Michael Schumacher cries when he hears his wife and children's voices, and communicates using his eyes, it has been claimed.

The seven-time Formula One champion will turn 46 on Saturday, 13 months after the skiing accident which left him in a coma for six months.

He will spend his birthday with his wife, son and daughter at their home by Lake Geneva. He has been there since leaving hospital in September, and his wife Corinna has said he is now in a process of recovery "which will presumably take a long time".

New details of the progress of that recovery have been reported in the Italian media.

Newspaper Corriere della Serra said Schumacher is capable of demonstrating emotion through tears.

It said: "Sometimes a tear rolls down Michael's face. He cries when he hears the voice of his children or his wife.
"Michael has his eyes open but he is often looking into a void. In recent times he has been able to recognise the familiar faces of his family but he cannot communicate with them.
"He does not speak and he is not able to perform movements independently. He reacts to external stimuli but for now can only answer a familiar voice by opening his eyes."

A separate report in the magazine Autosprint said Schumacher was able to sit up.
Editor-in-chief Alberto Sabbatini, who said his information was provided by "those who know and see him", said:

"The good news is that Michael is not stuck in a bed. When not undergoing physical therapy to avoid muscle atrophy, he sits in a chair in front of the windows of his villa, overlooking on one side the snowy peaks of the Swiss Alps, and on the other the shores of Lake Geneva."

Schumacher suffered severe head injuries after striking a rock whilst skiing off piste with his son Mick at the French resort of Meribel.
He had two brain operations at a hospital in Greenoble before being moved to hospital in Lausanne last June.

In September, his manager Sabine Kehm said:

“Considering the severe head injuries he suffered, progress has been made in the past weeks and months. There is still, however, a long and difficult road ahead.”

A surgeon who has treated Schumacher said in October the German would need years to recover fully.

EXCLUSIVE: Michael Schumacher's 'Progress is Uncertain' as Care Costs Spiral

STRICKEN F1 legend Michael Schumacher's care costs have soared to over Ł10million since his ski accident in the French Alps nearly 14 months ago, according to medical insiders.

Daily Express UK, 18 Feb 2015

GETTY

Schumacher remains mute with "limited awareness" of his environment But for his anxious family and friends, there is still no guarantee that the 46-year-old superstar of motor racing will ever make it back to normal.

His family have imposed a total news blackout on the care he is receiving at his Swiss mansion home on the shores of Lake Geneva.
Yet it is known that he remains mute with "limited awareness" of his environment and is also still unable to walk.

"Progress is painfully slow," said an insider.
"There is no miracle on the horizon."

He is cared for around the clock by a 15-strong medical team advised by Professor Jean-Francois Payen who operated on his brain blood clots after his catastrophic ski accident at Meribel on December 29 2013.

Professor Payen remains in constant contact with the family and medical team wherever he is in the world.
One of his main tasks is managing the expectations of wife Corinna and Schumacher children Mick, 15, and Gina-Maria, 17.

"What tortures the public is the same thing that tortures the family – progress is slow, progress is uncertain," said Peter Hamlyn, a consultant neurological and spinal surgeon and expert in the field of head injuries in sport.

GETTY

Each day, Schumacher is massaged for hours in an effort to stimulate muscle mass Hamlyn successfully treated brain-damaged boxer Michael Watson after being knocked down by fellow Briton Chris Eubank in a world title fight in 1991.

"If you look at severe head injury victims who go on to make a good recovery – and I'm not saying all do – it will always be a story of years," he added.
"The first months are dominated by questions of survival. Gradually as the weeks and months go by those questions of survival turn into questions of the quality of survival.
"It's a rollercoaster and if Michael Schumacher's rollercoaster takes him and his family somewhere happy then they will have been to places that will have been pretty unhappy on the way there.
"But I know they will have been buoyed by all the support that has been voiced."

Professor Payen recently expressed particular admiration for Corinna saying: "She has displayed in every way an exceptional willpower. She knew the seriousness of the situation and the long road that lay before them. She looks at things very clearly and makes every effort, and gives everything, which can help to improve the condition of her husband."

Formula One legend Schumacher suffered severe head injuries while skiing off-piste with his son in the French Alps.
The accident – which would have killed him without a helmet – left the seven-time World Champion with brain damage and he was put in a medically-induced coma for almost six months.

Schumacher has now awoken from the coma, but a complete media-blackout around the racer's recovery means details on his condition are sparse.

His team of medical experts are treating Schumacher in a special clinic, built in the grounds of his Swiss home.

Special tents have been erected to prevent paparazzi photographing the star outside in his wheelchair.

The tailored medical facilities also has a room for the driver's father – who has moved from Germany to be close to his son.

Each day, Schumacher is massaged for hours in an effort to stimulate muscle mass and is assessed every hour for improvements.

Paying tribute to his dear friend, Lewis Hamilton wrote to him: "Dear Michael, You are always in my prayers. Prayers of hope that you pull through this difficult time."

Jenson Button said: "When I think of Michael Schumacher I think of two things.

Schumacher's Son to Make Debut

Bleachers, 3 March 2015

Michael Schumacher's Son, Mick, Joins Formula 4 Team Van Amersfoort Racing

Mick Schumacher, the son of legendary Formula One driver Michael, has agreed on a deal to drive for Van Amersfoort Racing in the upcoming Formula Four series.

As BBC Sport noted, the 15-year-old finished second in the German Kart Championship last season and has subsequently been selected to take part in the upcoming campaign, home to the sport's most promising young drivers. He'll get his F4 career underway beginning on April 25

IMRE FOELDI/Associated Press

Mick will be hoping to follow in his father's footsteps.

Frits van Amersfoort, owner of the Dutch racing team, explained why they selected the youngster for the upcoming campaign, per PaddockScout.com (of NBC Sports):
In the last couple of years, it has become a tradition for us that we offer the runner-up from the German junior karting championship (DJKM) a test session in our simulator.
This is handled by the DMSB, the German motorsport authority, and that is how we first got in touch with Mick Schumacher last autumn. He spent a full day in the simulator at our headquarters in The Netherlands. Then we witnessed him during a test session at Valencia and eventually, we reached an agreement to compete together in this year's ADAC Formula 4 series.

Mick's father, Michael, was the most successful driver in the history of the sport, winning seven world titles in a distinguished career.
At the moment, the elder Schumacher is continuing his recovery from a skiing accident that occurred in December 2013. No official updates on his condition have been released since September of last year.

Paul Gilham/Getty Images

Formula 1 has unified to support Schumacher since his accident.

While it would be easy to fast-track the 15-year-old because of the gravitas his name commands, he clearly has the talent to make an impression at this level, as his successes to date suggest.

There will naturally be enormous expectations on him to follow in his father's footsteps, but making the step up from karts to cars represents a crucial time in the development of any young driver. Nonetheless, his involvement will likely ensure F4 and the burgeoning talent in the division will get a lot more coverage than it otherwise would.

Michael Schumacher's Former Ferrari Boss Says He Has 'Received News' About The F1 Legend's Condition
>>But Warns 'Unfortunately it is Not Good'

  • Schumacher's ex Ferrari boss has warned news on the driver is 'not good'
  • Luca di Montezemolo today refused to elaborate on his brief statement
  • He told reporters today: 'I have news and unfortunately it is not good'
  • Schumacher is receiving treatment for head injuries caused in ski accident
Daily Mail UK, 5 February 2016

The latest news about the health of seven-time Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher is not good, his former Ferrari boss has said.

Luca di Montezemolo, the former Ferrari chairman, today spoke only briefly to reporters and refused to elaborate on the short statement.

Schumacher is still receiving treatment at his home in Switzerland following head injuries he suffered in a skiing accident in France in December 2013.

Michael Schumacher (pictured in 2011) is still receiving treatment at his home in Switzerland following head injuries he suffered in a skiing accident

Schumacher's wife Corrina (pictured together) now manages the racing legend's affairs as he remains at their home in Switzerland undergoing rehabilitation

'I have news and unfortunately it is not good,' Montezemolo told reporters without giving any further details. 'Life is strange. He was a fantastic driver and only had one accident with Ferrari in 1999.'

'He was a great driver and we shared a great personal and professional relationship, we also had the pleasure of having our children at similar times.
'Unfortunately a fall while skiing, an accident, has broken him'.

Schumacher was holidaying with his wife Corinna and children Mick and Gina Maria on December 29, 2013, when he smashed his head on rocks during a low-speed ski-run at the resort of Meribel where he owned a villa.

After being airlifted off the mountain, underwent emergency operations to save his life, placed in an artificial coma and spent months in hospital.

Since September 2014, he has received extended therapy and care in a purpose built medical suite at his Lake Geneva mansion where a team of 15 people look after him around the clock.

As late as December last year it was believed that relatively little had changed in his condition in the time that he had been back home.
During the time since the accident, he has shed over two stone in weight.

His wife Corinna now manages his affairs and has sold off his beloved private jet and a holiday home they shared in Norway.

His management continues to speak of 'encouraging small steps' in his recovery. But the injuries he sustained were so massive that it was unclear when or if he will regain any more motor functions.

The BBC's Richard Conway tweeted Schumacher's spokesperson had declined to comment on Montezemolo's claims.

In November 2014, his friend and former racing driver Philippe Streiff said the seven-time champion could not speak and had memory problems.

Since September 2014, Schumacher has received extended therapy and care in a purpose built medical suite at his Lake Geneva mansion

Streiff, who is himself wheelchair-bound since a crash in Brazil during pre-season tests in 1989 left him a quadriplegic, was speaking on French radio.

The Frenchman said: 'He is getting better but everything is relative. It's very difficult. He can't speak. Like me, he is in a wheelchair paralysed. He has memory problems and speech problems.'

Streiff, 59, was seen visiting Schumacher when the German was in intensive care in Grenoble Hospital, France.

In October, a French doctor treating Schumacher said that the 45-year-old was making progress, but will need years to fully recover.

Ms Kehm has said it was 'very hard' for his loved ones to comprehend how the racing car driver could have been so catastrophically injured in such a 'banal situation'.

Schumacher's wife Corinna was a constant presence at his bedside. She and Schumacher met in 1991 on the F1 circuit after she was previously married to racing driver Heinz-Harald Frentzen.

With an accumulated wealth estimated to be well over half-a-billion pounds, Schumacher's family is well placed to provide the limitless care that will be needed in the coming years

This will include physiotherapists, to massage his atrophying joints, doctors, nutritionists, nurses and neurological experts.

Update re: PhOtOs/VIDEOs-Schumacher UPDATE>Shows 'Encouraging Signs' on Road Back to Recovery

Michael Schumacher Showing 'Encouraging Signs' on Long Road Back to Recovery...
>Reveals Ross Brawn

  • Michael Schumacher suffered a serious skiing accident back in 2013
  • The F1 legend has struggled to make a full recovery since the incident
  • Scumacher's condition has remained unknown in recent years
  • Ross Brawn has said Schumacher has displayed 'encouraging signs'
  • Brawn was Schumacher's boss in his successful spell with Ferrari
Daily Mail UK, 7 November 2016

Michael Schumacher has shown some 'encouraging signs' in his recovery from the serious head injuries suffered in a skiing accident in 2013, former Ferrari technical supremo Ross Brawn said on Thursday.

The seven-time world champion has been treated at home in Switzerland since he was released from hospital and few details have been made public. The 47-year-old's current condition remains unknown.

'The family have chosen to conduct Michael's convalescence in private and I must respect that,' Brawn, who helped German Schumacher to all his titles and worked with him at Benetton, Ferrari and Mercedes, told the BBC.

Michael Schumacher is showing 'encouraging signs' in his recovery, Ross Brawn has revealed

Schumacher, who worked under Brawn, suffered a serious skiing accident back in 2013

'There are encouraging signs and we are all praying every day that we see more of them,' added Brawn, who was close to Schumacher. 'So it is difficult for me to say very much and respect the family's privacy.

'All I would say is there is a lot of speculation about Michael's condition.
'Most of it is wrong and we just pray and hope every day that we continue to see some progress and that one day we can see Michael out and about and recovered from his terrible injuries.'

Brawn, who knows Schumacher well, has said he respects the wishes of the German's family

In September a German court was told that Schumacher, who fell and hit his head on a rock in the ski accident in the French Alps, remained unable to walk.

His manager Sabine Kehm said in December 2015 that media speculation about his condition was 'irresponsible, because given the seriousness of his injuries, his privacy is very important for Michael.
'Unfortunately they (reports) also give false hopes to many involved people.'

Race Car Re: PhOtOs/VIDEOs-Schumachers Son Drives 1994 Benetton Commemorating His Father's 1st

Michael Schumacher Honoured at Spa as Son Mick Drives a 1994 Benetton Commemorating His Father's First Win

Daily Mail UK, 27 Aug 2017.

Michael Schumacher may have seen his record for the highest number of pole positions in F1 equalled, but he remains an icon of the sport.
Schumacher's first win in F1 - of a clear record of 91 first places - came in 1994 at the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa, where the sport's circus has pitched up this weekend.

To mark the occasion, Schumacher's son, Mick, raced the same spec car as his father used back in 1994 on two laps of the Spa circuit.

The car was the same spec as that raced by Schumacher to his first F1 win at Spa in 1994

Schumacher Jnr is a racer himself in the Formula 3 series, and returned the name to F1 here.

Mick certainly takes after his dad, and is currently 11th in the Formula 3 European Championship.
To do the lap honouring his father, Schumacher junior wore a 50/50 helmet design, half his and half his father's.

The event itself was slightly delayed due to a serious crash in an earlier race on the Spa circuit, however Schumacher eventually made it out and put on a fine display in the spirit of his father.

Schumacher senior was honoured on an emotional weekend at Spa which saw Lewis Hamilton record his 68th pole in F1 - levelling the Benetton and Ferrari legend's record.

Hamilton, after equaling Schumacher's mark on a track where he won six times, said: 'It is definitely a special day. I knew it was on the horizon and at some stage I would get the 68th pole. I did not apply pressure, but now it is an unusual place to be.

'I remember coming to Spa in 1996 for my first grand prix, and watching Michael come out of turn one, and the vibration of the engine shook my rib cage. It was incredible. That is when my love for the sport took another step. Now, to think I have equalled him on poles is very surreal and very much a humbling experience.'

It was while skiing with 18-year-old Mick on a family holiday that Michael sustained severe head injuries in France on December 29, 2013. He has been cared for at his home in Switzerland since September 2014.

The current condition of the 48-year-old Schumacher's health remains closely guarded among family and close associates.

Race Car re: Michael Schumacher Set For Stem Cell Operation Within Days

‘It Felt Like Home’: Mick Schumacher Second in Testing on Maiden F1 Drive. Michael’s Son, Driving for Ferrari, Runs Verstappen Close

It was the first of two days of F1 tests for Schumacher – he drives for Alfa Romeo on Wednesday

The Guardian UK, 3 APR 2019.

Mick Schumacher completed 56 laps for Ferrari in his first F1 outing and was one of only two drivers to put in a lap under 1min 30sec.

Michael Schumacher’s son, Mick, made a hugely successful debut driving a Formula One car in a test for Ferrari. The 20-year-old completed 56 laps in Bahrain and was the second fastest behind Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. Fernando Alonso also returned to F1, conducting a tyre test for Pirelli in a McLaren at the Sakhir circuit.

Schumacher, who won the F3 championship last season, is a member of the Ferrari driver academy and is racing in F2 this season for the Prema team. He finished eighth and sixth in the opening two races in Bahrain last weekend. Ferrari was the team with which his father won five consecutive world championships between 2000 and 2004.

The youngster took to the Ferrari SF90 for his maiden F1 drive on Tuesday morning on a day when running was interrupted by rain. By the close he was swapping fastest laps with Verstappen, who is 21 but in his fifth season in the sport. The Dutchman’s best time was 1min 29.379sec, with Schumacher’s 0.6sec back. The pair were the only two to register times under 1min 30sec.

Thirteen years after his father last drove for Ferrari, Schumacher said he quickly felt at home with the team and relished his first F1 drive. “I really enjoyed today,” he said. “It felt like home in the garage from the very first moment with a lot of people that have known me since I was very young. The SF90 is incredible because of the power it has but it is also smooth to drive and that’s why I enjoyed myself so much.

“I was impressed by the braking power an F1 car has. It seemed to me you could brake later and later and the car would have made the turn anyway. I would like to say thank you Ferrari for this incredible opportunity.”

Mick Schumacher is a member of Ferrari’s driver academy and won the F3 championship last season.

Michael Schumacher was severely injured in a skiing accident in 2013 from which he is still in recovery. He won seven world championships but enjoyed his greatest success with Ferrari, for whom he drove between 1996 and 2006.

Schumacher Jr first took to the wheel in karting in 2008. He drove his father’s 1994 title-winning Benetton at Spa in a demonstration last year but Tuesday was his first time in a contemporary F1 car. He will conduct a further test on Wednesday, for Ferrari’s partner team, Alfa Romeo.

Lewis Hamilton, who won the Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday, completed the most laps, 71, and was sixth fastest. Lando Norris, a superb sixth in the race, was third fastest for McLaren. Another Briton, George Russell, was last on the timesheets for Williams but will test for Mercedes on Wednesday.

Alonso retired from F1 in 2018 but remained as an ambassador and adviser to McLaren and was conducting the Pirelli tyre test in this capacity. He has been clear he wants to help the team develop the car and has not ruled out a return to F1.

It was the first time Alonso had driven an F1 car since last year’s final race at Abu Dhabi. He completed 64 laps, was 11th fastest and he was impressed with this year’s model.

“It’s a step forward in every aspect,” he said. “I think the car has more grip, is less draggy on the straights, and the engine is a bigger step better as well.”

On Wednesday Dan Ticktum, a 19-year-old Londoner, will make his F1 debut when he tests for Red Bull. Ticktum, a member of the Red Bull junior team, was second to Mick Schumacher in the F3 championship last year and will race in Japan’s Super Formula series this season.

Mick Schumacher's First Ferrari Test | Bahrain International Circuit - Following in the footsteps of his illustrious father, the 20-year-old finished second fastest on his first outing for Ferrari at testing in Bahrain.

Update re: Michael Schumacher Set For Stem Cell Operation Within Days

Michael Schumacher 'Admitted to Paris Hospital to Undergo Secret Treatment'

The former Formula One champion has not been seen in public since a skiing accident in the French Alps almost six years ago

Daily Mirror UK, 10 Sep 2019.

Michael Schumacher was secretly admitted to a Paris hospital on Monday for treatment with a pioneering French surgeon.

The seven-time Formula One world champion has not been seen in public since a skiing accident in the French Alps almost six years ago.

Schumacher, who turned 50 in January, was left with severe head injuries and had to be placed in a medically-induced coma for a number of months.

Doctors declared that he was fortunate to be alive.

He is understood to have been receiving medical care at the family home near Lake Geneva in Switzerland, but updates regarding his health have been few and far between.

According to Le Parisien, Schumacher was taken to the Pompidou hospital in southwest Paris on Monday afternoon.

Schumacher originally arrived in a blue and yellow ambulance registered in Geneva at approximately 3:40pm.

It's claimed the former Ferrari driver was set to undergo treatment based on stem-cell transfusion by French surgeon Philippe Menasche, having arrived at the Continuous Monitoring Unit of the Cardiovascular Surgery Department.

The 69-year-old medic is best known for performing the world’s first embryonic cell transplant on a patient with heart failure in 2014 and specialises in stem cell research.

Schumacher's treatment was postponed because of an ‘unexpected health problem’ over the summer.

Schumacher remains Formula One's most successful driver having accumulated a record 91 Grand Prix wins and winning seven world titles.

Earlier this year, on the eve of his 50th birthday, his wife, Corinna, released a rare statement as the official Michael Schumacher app was launched, to remember his successes on the track.

Her update on his condition remained vague, but it has previously been reported a 15-strong medical team looks after Schumacher at the special medical facility built in his home, with his health care bills thought to have exceeded Ł20million.

Michael Schumacher's Wife Gives Rare Update About F1 Legend Ahead of Anniversary

Schumacher's wife Corinna has told fans 'big things start with small steps' as fan club launches 'KeepFightingMichael' social media campaign

Daily Mirror UK, 29 DEC 2019.

Michael Schumacher's wife Corinna has given a rare update ahead of the six-year anniversary of the skiing accident which left the F1 legend placed in a coma.

Seven-times F1 champion Schumacher suffered a serious brain injury in a skiing accident in the French Alps on 29 December, 2013, and was placed in a medically-induced coma for six months.

Little has since been revealed about Schumacher's condition of the seven-time world champion since he moved to being treated at his family's Lake Geneva home in September 2014.

But as fans prepare to launch a new 'KeepFightingMichael' social media page next week, Corinna Schumacher has opened up, saying "big things start with small steps".

“Big things start with small steps. Many small particles can form a huge mosaic,” Corinna reportedly told fans.

The Kerpen fan club in Germany has announced it will use the hashtag ‘KeepFighting’ for its social media campaign.

‘KeepFighting’ is also the name of the family foundation which supports other accident victims and invests in brain and spinal cord research.

Chairman of the fan club Reiner Ferling said he is hopeful of seeing Schumacher out in public again.

“Unfortunately, the time has come again, the sixth anniversary of Michael’s accident is coming around,” Ferling said.

“Six years full of hope that Michael will one day go out in public again.

“We know that Michael is in good hands, that he gets love, security and confidence. Michael can count himself lucky to have such a strong family behind him.

“As a fan club, we will provide all kinds of support that we can provide.”

Last month, Corrina said of her husband:

"He is in the best of hands right now and we are doing everything we can to help him.

"Try to understand that we follow Michael's desire to keep his health a secret.

"You can be sure that he is in the very best of hands and that we are doing everything humanly possible to help him.

Update re: FINAL Report on Schumachers' Health as Brother Ralf Speaks Out

Michael Schumacher UPDATE... as F1 Icon Set For Stem Cell Operation 'Within Days'

It is over six years since the seven-time Formula 1 world champion suffered a tragic skiing accident and the German has not been seen publicly since, with his condition a closely guarded secret

Daily Mirror UK, 11 JUN 2020

Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher is set to have a new stem cell operation in the coming days.

It is now more than six years since the German F1 icon suffered a tragic skiing accident.

Schumacher has not been seen in public since.

Reports in Italian media say that Dr Philippe Menasche, a French professor and cardiologist who has operated on Schumacher before, could operate on him soon.

French newspaper Le Dauphine claims the latest operation could take place "in the next few days."

Dr Nicola Acciari, a leading neurosurgeon, says that Schumacher is suffering from osteoporosis and muscle atrophy, due to him being unable to move since a serious skiing accident in Meribel in the French Alps in 2013.

Acciari said: "The goal is to regenerate Michael's nervous system."

That is why cardiologist Menasche, a 'pioneer in stem cell surgery', is reportedly going to conduct another cardiac stem cell operation on the seven-time F1 world champion.

Speaking about the operation, Acciari also said: "Over the past 20 years, science has made enormous progress with stem cell treatment.

"But that does not change that we still do not know much about the human brain.

"We are not able to say what the results will be."

Schumacher, who won a total of 91 grand prix during his illustrious career, underwent his first stem-cell operation with Menasche in late 2019 in Paris.

Last month, former teammate Felipe Massa stated that the F1 legend remains in a "difficult situation".

"I know how he (Schumacher) is, I have information.

"My relationship with him has always been very close. It is less close with his wife Corinna because she did not go to many races.

“But I think the main thing about all this is that we know that his situation is not easy.

"He is in a difficult phase but we need to respect him and the family."

Update re: FINAL Report on Schumachers' Health as Brother Ralf Speaks Out

Michael Schumacher's Devastating Secret Health Problems After Horrific Ski Accident

Michael Schumacher is widely regarded as the greatest ever Formula One driver but he suffered a devastating skiing accident six years ago

Daily Mail UK, 5 JUl. 2020

Former F1 world champion Michael Schumacher, pictured with his wife, suffered a devastating skiing accident six years ago (Image: AFP/Getty Images)

Michael Schumacher is one of the most successful racing drives to have ever graced the Formula One track.

With a record breaking seven championship wins to his name, five of them consectively, he has roared to victory more times than any other driver.

After starting karting as a child, the 51-year-old worked his way up to Formula One, spending most of his career driving for Mercedes.

However, he did switch to Ferrari in 1996, who had last won the championship in 1979, and transformed them into one of the most successful teams in the sport.

Even after he retired in 2006, he couldn't get the sport out of his blood and returned to the track just four years later.

Michael Schumacher is regarded as F1's greatest ever driver (Image: Bongarts/Getty Images)

Two years later he announced his career as a racing driver really was over for good and Britain's Lewis Hamilton replaced him at Mercedes.

In an emotional speech announcing his decision, Schumacher said while he still felt "able to compete with the best drivers" he wasn't sure if he had the "motivation and energy which is necessary to go on".

Just over a year after he announced his retirement, on December 29, 2013, while skiing with his then 14-year-old son, Mick, Schumacher suffered a devastating accident.

The father and son was skiing down the Combe de Saulire above Meribel in the French Alps.

It was while they were crossing an unsecured off-piste area that Schumacher, an accomplished skiier, fell and hit his head on a rock.

His life was saved by his ski helmet and the racing legend was airlifted to hospital and underwent two operations to save him.

Schumacher was placed in a medically induced coma and his doctors said his condition was stable.

By June the following year, it was reported that Schumacher had regained consciousness and he was transferred to a hospital for rehab.

He was allowed home in September of that year, where his rehab has continued, but where updates about his condition have been few and far between.

His devoted wife, Corinna, and management team have always insisted his health is a private issue and have remained tight-lipped about what, if any, progress the racing legend has made since his injury.

Schumacher was a seven times world champion (Image: Getty Images)

In a rare update just before the sixth anniversary of Schumacher's devastating accident, Corrina said "big things start with small steps".

Then, in January this year, a neurosurgeon has claimed Schumacher's condition has "deteriorated" since the accident just over six six years ago.

Nicola Acciari said: "We must imagine a person very different from the one we remember on the track, with a very altered and deteriorated organic, muscular and skeletal structure,

"All as a result of the brain trauma he suffered."

There finally seemed to be a glimmer of hope when reports earlier this month claimed the F1 ace was to undergo stem cell surgery within days.

It gave hope to Schumacher's fans around the world but just days later the claims seemed to be false.

While his family maintained their silence they are thought to have not even considered the procedure during the coronavirus pandemic.

However, six years after his accident, the racing great is believed to have been left with devastating health complications because he has been confined to his bed for so long.

He is reported to now be suffering from muscle atrophy, which has caused his muscles to waste away and osteoporosis, which weakens bones.

It had been hoped the stem cell surgery would regenerate Schumacher's nervous system and would be carried out by French cardiologist Dr Philippe Menasche.

The doctor has previously managed to graft healthy stems cells onto the heart by replacing damaged ones with a healthy replacement.

While the surgery is deemed to be safe there is currently no evidence as to what impact it would have on the brain.

Felipe Massa Gives Rare Insight Into Michael Schumacher’s Condition and Recovery

Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher and Felipe Massa were team-mates at Ferrari and the Brazilian driver has stayed in touch

I sincerely hope that he keeps living a meaningful life. Despite his wealth, he seemed to be a down-to-earth bloke. I remember his apperance at a charity tv show for the victims of the 2004 tsunami - he spontaneously donated 10 million (!) dollars. He was also known for using a small, bog-standard Fiat as a daily driver.

Michael Schumachers' Managers' Heartbreaking Explanation for Secrecy Around His Condition
  • Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher suffered devastating injuries in a ski accident on 29 December, 2013, while he was with his then 14-year-old son, Mick

Daily Mirror UK, 5 SEP 2020.

He is widely regarded as one of the greatest Formula 1 drivers to ever have lived.

Michael Schumacher won a record breaking seven championship, five of them consectively and has roared to victory more times than any other driver on the track.

But just a year after his retirement, the racing legend suffered a devastating injury in a ski accident and has never been seen in public since.

Updates on his condition are rare and contain few details, leaving Schucmacher's millions of fans around the world wondering if he will ever recover.

In July, former Ferrari boss Jean Todt, paid Schumacher a visit and gave his supporters hope that he would one day be able to make a public appearance.

Todt - the former team principal at Ferrari who now works as President of the FIA, F1's governing body - told the Mail on Sunday that he paid a visit to see Schumacher as he continues to recover in Geneva, Switzerland.

He said: "He is fighting. I hope the world will be able to see him again. That is what he and his family are working towards."

Then, on December 29, 2013, while skiing with his then 14-year-old son, Mick, Schumacher suffered a devastating accident.

In January this year, a neurosurgeon has claimed Schumacher's condition has "deteriorated" since the accident just over six years ago.

"All as a result of the brain trauma he suffered."

There finally seemed to be a glimmer of hope when reports earlier in July claimed the F1 ace was to undergo stem cell surgery within days.

It gave hope to Schumacher's fans around the world but just days later the claims seemed to be false.

While his family maintained their silence they are thought to have not even considered the procedure during the coronavirus pandemic.

His devoted wife, Corinna, and management team have always insisted his health is a private issue and have remained tight-lipped about what, if any, progress the racing legend has made since his injury.

Schumacher’s manager Sabine Kehm lifted the lid on why updates have been few and far between at a meeting of media professionals back in March 2016.

She said: "In general the media have never reported on Michael and Corinna's private life. When he was in Switzerland, for example, it was clear he was a private individual.

"Once in a long discussion Michael said to me 'you don't need to call me for the next year, I'm disappearing.'

"I think it was his secret dream to be able to do that some day.

That's why now I still want to protect his wishes in that I don't let anything get out."

Michael Schumachers' Family Share Rare Footage of Stricken Star in New Documentary

Schumacher has not been seen in public since he suffered a serious brain injury while skiing in 2013, while his family have kept details of his health carefully discreet in the intervening years

BBC •28 Jan 2021

Michael Schmacher's family are set to open up to cameras and provide rare footage of the F1 hero amid his ongoing health battle.

The condition of the seven-time world champion is still very much unknown to the public after he suffered a serious brain injury in a skiing accident in 2013.

His family have done everything in their power to keep the situation regarding his health under close wraps since.

But now they are due to appear in a new documentary, entitled 'Schumacher', which will include private recordings the family have agreed to release.

The documentary is being pulled together by German filmmakers Michael Wech and Hanns-Bruno Kammertons, but the coronavirus pandemic has delayed its production.

Schumacher's wife Corinna features in the programme, along with the former Ferrari star's father Rolf, daughter Gina-Maria and son Mick - who now races for F1 team Haas.

Sabine Kehm, the spokesperson for the Schumacher family, said: "The film portrays Michael's impressive career, but also many of the facets of the complex man.

“The merciless and daring Formula 1 driver, the ambitious athlete, the accomplished mechanic with a unique technical flair, the reliable team player and loving family man."

Schumacher was airlifted to hospital following his accident on the French Alps after hitting his head on a rock while skiing off-piste down a mountain.

After undergoing surgery twice, he was then placed in a medically-induced coma for six months.

He spent more than 250 days in hospital before returning to his home in Geneva, Switzerland, where he has been recuperating ever since.

Details of his recovery have remained private, but Schumacher continues to receive constant round-the-clock care from nurses.

His former manager at Ferrari, Jean Todt, said in September: "I saw Michael last week. He is fighting.

“My God, we know he had a terrible and unfortunate skiing accident which has caused him a lot of problems.

“But he has an amazing wife next to him, he has his kids, his nurses, and we can only wish him the best and to wish the family the best too.

“All I can do is to be close to them until I am able to do something, and then I will do it."

Schumacher's wife Corinna said their attempts to be discreet over his health were at Michael's request.

But the family have given their full blessing for the documentary to go ahead.

Co-producer of the doc, Benjamin Seikel, said: “We are thrilled to have had the trusting co-operation of Michael Schumacher ’s family and management.

"Without their support, this film would not have been possible."

A release date has not yet been given for the documentary, with Seikel's fellow producer Vanessa Nocker urging for "patience".

Michael Schumachers' Wife Selling F1 Legends' Ł6.4m Mansion' as He Continues Recovery

Corrina Schumacher - who has been married to Formula 1 legend Michael since 1995 - has put the couple's 20,000 square-metre home on the banks of Lake Geneva up for sale

Daily Mirror UK.13 MAY 2021.

The enormous residence is on the banks of Lake Geneva

Corinna Schumacher, the wife of Formula 1 legend Michael, has reportedly put the couple's palatial home in Switzerland on the market.

The 20,000 square-metre farmhouse is on the banks of Lake Geneva and has been listed at Ł6.4million - over double the Ł3m the Schumachers paid for the property in 2002.

Corinna is understood to have relocated as her husband continues to be treated for the brain injury he suffered in a devastating skiing accident eight years ago.

Now based in a Ł27million mansion in Majorca formerly owned by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, she has put the Swiss home up for sale.

As reported by German magazine Bunte , the sprawling residence has been described as "an exceptional property in a quiet and protected location".

The report adds the Schumachers were waited on by housekeepers and protected by bodyguards when living there, while Corinna - a decorated rider - kept horses in the grounds.

The property features the main residence, a guest house and an office where Schumacher himself worked.

Updates on the German icon are few and far between but Jean Todt - who managed Schumacher during his time at Ferrari - spoke about him in December last year.

"I saw Michael last week. He is fighting," said Todt, who is now president of the FIA.

"My god, we know he had a terrible and unfortunate skiing accident which has caused him a lot of problems.

"But he has an amazing wife next to him, he has his kids, his nurses, and we can only wish him the best and to wish the family the best, too.

"All I can do is to be close to them until I am able to do something, and then I will do it."

Todt added: "He has been treated so that he can be able to return to a more normal life."

Mick Schumacher to Combine Haas Race Seat With Role as Ferrari Reserve Driver

Mick Schumacher will combine his race seat at Haas in 2022 with a role as Ferrari's reserve driver.

BBC News 24 DEC 2021.

Schumacher completed his first season in Formula 1 in 2021

The 22-year-old German will share the Ferrari reserve position with former Alfa Romeo driver Antonio Giovinazzi.

Giovinazzi will assume the role at 12 races while Schumacher will fill in at the other 11 when the Italian is racing in Formula E.

A reserve driver stands in for the regular drivers if they are unable to race.

Schumacher's race seat at Haas would be taken by Brazilian Pietro Fittipaldi if the German was needed by Ferrari.

Giovinazzi lost his seat in F1 at the end of the season after three years with Alfa Romeo. He will also be available to Ferrari's customer teams Haas and Alfa Romeo when he is at races with the factory team.

Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto said of Schumacher, son of seven-time champion Michael Schumacher: "He is a Ferrari driver. We should not forget that. He has been part of the academy and the reason we have an academy is to identify who can be the next Ferrari driver for the future."

Binotto, speaking at Ferrari's pre-Christmas news conference, praised Schumacher's performances in his debut season with Haas in 2021.

"If I look at the last races he was a lot closer to cars ahead even though Haas did not really develop the car at all," Binotto said. "So the fact he was closer showed he had good improvement on the speed itself."

A new contract for Sainz

Sainz celebrated his maiden podium for Ferrari at the Monaco Grand Prix in May

Binotto added that he hoped to negotiate an extended contract with Carlos Sainz over the winter before the start of the 2022 season.

The Spaniard joined Ferrari on a two-year contract at the start of this year and had an impressive debut season, finishing ahead of team leader Charles Leclerc in the championship by five and a half points.

"With Carlos, we will discuss through the winter time the extension of his contact," Binotto said. "He worked very well during the season. I'm very happy with the way he integrated and has been performing on track."

Leclerc is committed to Ferrari until the end of 2024 and Binotto said that he had been "very happy" with the Monegasque's performances through the season.

He pointed out that Leclerc would have scored in the region of 40 more points had his car not retired before the race when Leclerc was on pole in Monaco, and had he not been taken out in the multi-car pile-up at the wet start in Hungary.

Hopes in check for 2022

Ferrari finished third in the constructors' championship this year despite taking the decision not to develop their 2021 car once the season started so they could put maximum effort into the new technical rules being introduced next season.

But Binotto said he "cannot be confident" Ferrari will be in a position to challenge Mercedes and Red Bull for the championship in 2022.

"The gap to the lead it is still significant showing that those teams are very strong," Binotto said. "So the fact we have put a lot of effort on 2022 and making that the priority was a necessity, because we knew if we had not done that it would have been difficult to have a good car, a competitive car in 2022.

"The new regs are a clear opportunity. The hope is to be competitive, which means being in a position to win races.

"Does it mean we can fight for a championship? I think if I look at today, the gap is too big. But as Ferrari what is important is to be capable of fighting at least in some races for the pole position and the win."

Binotto said that Ferrari had not set a date on which their new car would be revealed to the public, but that it would be around 16-18 February.

Monaco GP Red-Flagged as Mick Schumachers' Car Dramatically Splits in Half

Mick Schumacher crashed into the barrier at the Swimming Pool chicane with his car splitting in half at the Monaco Grand Prix - but he was able to walk away unhurt

Daily Mirror 29 MAY 2022

The Monaco Grand Prix has been red-flagged after Mick Schumacher's car dramatically split in half as he crashed at the Swimming Pool chicane.

Thirty of the 77 laps had been completed after the race was initially delayed by over an hour due to rain.

Schumacher, 23, lost control of his Haas before slamming into the barrier. He was remarkably able to walk away from the accident.

"I am OK,'' he said. "I just don't understand it.''

The race was red-flagged due to significant damage to the tyre barrier.

After a 20-minute delay, the race was able to resume at 5.15pm local time, with Sergio Perez leading from Carlos Sainz, Max Verstappen and Chales Leclerc.

The damage caused to Schumacher's car

The drama came after the start of the race was delayed following a rain shower. It was due to get under way at 3pm local time before it was pushed back to 3.09pm and then a further unspecified delay was announced.

The formation lap to the grid was ordered to take place behind the safety car, with Charles Leclerc starting from pole position.

Formula One's governing body, the FIA, then announced the formation lap would start at 3:16pm, behind the safety car. As the heavy rain continued, the race was suspended four minutes after the start of the formation lap. Ferrari driver Leclerc said over the team radio: "It is raining like crazy.''

The race finally got underway at 4.05pm local time, over an hour after it was initially scheduled to begin.

It's not the first time Schumacher has been involved in a crash this season after a high-impact incident during qualifying for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix saw him miss the race in Jeddah.

He was released from hospital following that incident after precautionary checks.

Schumacher, son of legendary F1 driver Michael, is yet to register a point after 27 race starts.

Michael Schumacher's Ex-Manager Angry at Being Left in Dark as He Slams Family's Lies

Michael Schumacher was left in a coma after suffering a bad skiing accident in 2013, and since returning home his family have chosen to keep his condition private

Daily Mirror 22 JUL 2022

Michael Schumacher's former manager, Willi Weber

The former manager of Michael Schumacher has accused the family of the F1 legend of telling him 'lies' as they continue to keep details of his condition private.

Schumacher, 52, won seven world titles in a stellar career, but long before he was prominent in the sport Willi Webber had spotted his potential. The German managed his compatriot for much of his career, and was largely credited for turning the star into one of the most highest-paid sports stars on the planet.

However, Webber has now lashed out after claiming he's been prevented from visiting Schumacher since his harrowing skiing accident in 2013. The incident, which took place on a family holiday in Grenoble, left the star in a medically induced coma.

He was later transferred to Lausanne University Hospital in Switzerland before being released to continue his rehabilitation at home. His wife Corrina and family have since opted not to comment publicly on his welfare.

Last September, the Netflix documentary Schumachergave an insight into the impact the ordeal was having on the family, but stopped short of providing an update on the Ferrari icon himself. And Weber, 80, has now lamented the apparent secrecy.

"I tried hundreds of times to contact Corinna [Schumacher’s wife] and she didn’t answer," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "I called Jean Todt [Schumacher’s ex-boss at Ferrari] to ask him if I should go to the hospital and he told me to wait – it’s too early.

Willi Weber managed Michael Schumacher at the height of his F1 career

“I called the next day and no one answered. I didn’t expect behaviour like that and I’m still angry about it. They kept me out, telling me it’s too early, well now it’s too late. It’s been nine years. Maybe they should just say it the way it is."

Webber, who has also managed the likes of Naomi Campbell and Claudia Schiffer, did concede that he had empathy with the family's initial stance, but not with what he claims to be dishonesty: "I could understand the situation initially as I always did everything I could for Michael to protect his private life. But since then we have only heard lies from them."

Weber, who raced in Formula 3 before going into management, also worked with Schumacher’s brother Ralf. And he also spoke about his own turmoil over the plight of his former client.

Michael Schumacher
is to receive prestigious award as tragic F1 star is honoured

“Years after the accident, I said to myself to just look out for the family as I couldn’t change things. He was like a son to me. Even today it hurts me to talk about it.”

On the Netflix documentary, Corrina said: “I miss Michael every day. But it's not just me who misses him. It's the children, the family, his father, everyone around him. I mean, everybody misses Michael, but Michael is here. Different, but he's here and that gives us strength, I find."

Schumacher's son Mick is currently in his second F1 season, driving for Haas. His last two races in Britain and Austria have brought up the first two top-10 finishes of his career.

Michael Schumachers' Legendary Title-Winning Ferrari Sold For Record Price at Auction

Schumacher Ferrari Fetches Record Ł11.6 Million (13m Swiss francs) at Auction

Michael Schumacher made history in 2003 as he secured his sixth world championship and the famous car he drove to victory has been sold at an auction in Geneva

BBC News 10 NOV 2022.

Michael Schumacher's legendary Ferrari, that he drove to the 2003 world championship, has been sold for a record price at auction in Geneva.

The F1 car in question - named F2003 GA Chassis 229 - was driven nine times by Schumacher on the way to securing his sixth world championship. It was tipped to fetch around Ł8million at auction in Geneva on Wednesday but it has smashed the modern record, going for a hefty Ł11.6million (13m Swiss francs).

The previous record was also held by a Ferrari driven by Schumacher, although that sold for considerably less at Ł6.6m in New York in 2017.

Mick Schumacher Posts Adorable New Picture With Dad Michael Amid Icon's Health Battle

The young F1 star is the son of one of the sport's greatest drivers and he opted to share a heartwarming throwback photo online with his beloved father while he was still in the sport

BBC 21 JAN 2023

Mick Schumacher has uploaded a sweet photo with his iconic father Michael to social media amid the F1 icon's ongoing health battle.

The 23-year-old updated his Twitter profile picture to a snap of himself as a toddler being held by his legendary dad. The seven-time world champion was dressed in his racing gear when the photo was taken.

The aspiring F1 starlet posted the photo with the hashtag #NeuesProfilbild which translates to new profile picture. The change has got almost 77,000 likes thanks to the love for his father, who many consider to be the greatest driver in history.

Schumacher's Instagram account told fans he'll "keep fighting" as they thanked those who wished him happy birthday back in January, when his son put a snap on Instagram. They posted to his 1.2million Instagram followers: "Thank you so much everybody for the warm birthday wishes! They are greatly appreciated [thumbs up emoji] #TeamMichael #KeepFighting #KeepFightingMichael."

Mercedes already prepared to let Mick Schumacher go before first F1 race of year

Michael Schumacher "rewrote F1 history" as Giancarlo Fisichella shares his Ferrari regret

Earlier this month, Mick shared a throwback photograph of himself with his legendary father to mark his birthday.

"Happy birthday to the best Dad ever," wrote Mick, adding: "Love you!" after a heart emoji. Accompanying that was a photo of Michael smiling behind the wheel of a car and another of them together from several years ago, before the F1 legend's tragic accident.

Mick’ has gone through a change in his young F1 career as Haas opted not to renew his contract before being signed by Mercedes as a reserve driver. But before his time at the Silver Arrows has truly begun, team principal Toto Wolff has said they will let the youngster leave if another team offers him a seat.

On the other hand, Wolff is confident that he will prove to be an asset for the team, especially when it comes to helping to assess car developments and setups over the course of the year. “I believe that if we can provide him with a safe environment to develop further, he can be a good driver in a full-time seat in the future," Wolff said this week of his situation.

"We had to let Nyck [de Vries] go in the same way for him to have a career, now that could also happen with Mick. Whether it's with our team or whether we have to let him go, we don't know yet.

"He will contribute enormously as he has already driven the new car and he has been in Formula 1 for two years. He will be super helpful in the simulator and when judging the car. It's good to have him on track and in the debriefing area."

The 23-year-old is set to start next season as a test driver for Mercedes

Michael Schumachers' 10-Year Health Battle Has Left Wife Corinna Like a Prisoner

Corinna Schumacher has stayed by her husband and F1 great Michael's side following his horrific ski crash in 2013, and now Eddie Jordan has revealed the devastating impact it's had on her

BBC 30 MAR 2023

Michael Schumacher's F2000 Ferrari is going under the hammer

Eddie Jordan has detailed the devastating impact the last 10 years has had on Corinna Schumacher following her husband's ski accident in 2013.

The 54-year-old has been married to seven-time F1 world champion Michael since 1995 and has been by his side every step of the way in his recovery from his tragic ski accident back in 2013 - which caused a traumatic brain injury and saw him fall into a coma.

Corinna has ensured the daily care her legendary F1 husband receives is up to scratch, and has overseen the effort to ensure his wish for privacy is respected.

Jordan, a good friend of Schumacher, commented on the huge toll the last decade has taken on Corinna, with the F1 icon describing her as his "guardian angel".

"This was the most horrific situation for Mick and Corinna," the Irishman told The Sun. "It's been nearly ten years now and Corinna has not been able to go to a party, to lunch or this or that, she's like a prisoner because everyone would want to talk to her about Michael when she doesn't need reminding of it every minute."

Corinna has imposed a rule that only permits family to see the former Ferrari star, and one of the few people outside the family who has been allowed to see him is former F1 chief and ex-Ferrari boss Jean Todt. Corinna has since admitted that Schumacher is "different" following his accident.

She was accepting the State Prize of North-Rhine-Westphalia on his behalf last year when she made those comments. "I miss Michael every day. But it's not just me who misses him. It's the children, the family, his father, everyone around him. I mean, everybody misses Michael, but Michael is here. Different, but he's here and that gives us strength, I find," she said previously.

"We try to carry on a family as Michael liked it and still does. And we are getting on with our lives. 'Private is private', as he always said. It is very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible. Michael always protected us, and now we are protecting Michael."

Corinna and Michael married back in 1995

Jordan, who gave Schumacher his debut at Jordan in 1991 - has often spoken of his "love" for his pal Michael - including earlier this year as he described the 91-time F1 race winner as "there but not there". He went on to reveal how he was prevented from seeing the motorsport icon by his beloved wife in the early days following the accident, given the volume of people who wanted to visit.

"Privacy is such a vital aspect to sport, business and your personal life,” Jordan told betting firm OLGB. "[Corinna] has set out some rules, I know her very well and a long time before Michael Schumacher. She's a lovely girl and I knew her when she married Michael so there is a long history of good relations."

He added: "I made an effort to go see Michael in the early days and Corinna refused, and rightfully so because too many people wanted to go see him. I was not able to go see Michael and they said 'We love you Eddie and we've been involved with you for a very long time, but we do need privacy and safeguard of Michael'."

Michael Schumacher: Seven-time F1 Champions' Family Plan Legal Action After AI-Generated Interview

Michael Schumachers' family are planning legal action against a magazine which published an artificial intelligence-generated 'interview' with the former Formula 1 driver.

BBC News 21 APR 2023

Schumacher, a seven-time F1 champion, suffered severe head injuries in a skiing accident in December 2013 and has not been seen in public since.

Die Aktuelle ran a picture of a smiling Schumacher, 54, on the front cover of its latest edition with a headline of "Michael Schumacher, the first interview".

A strapline underneath reads "it sounded deceptively real", and it emerges in the article that the supposed quotes had been produced by AI.

The article was produced using an AI programme called charatcter.ai, which artificially generated Schumacher 'quotes' about his health and family.

"I can with the help of my team actually stand by myself and even slowly walk a few steps," read the Schumacher 'quotes'.

"My wife and my children were a blessing to me and without them I would not have managed it. Naturally they are also very sad, how it has all happened.

"They support me and are standing firmly at my side."

The family have confirmed to news agency Reuters that they are planning to pursue the matter legally.

The magazine's publishers told BBC Sport they would not be commenting on the issue.

Following his skiing accident, Schumacher was placed into an induced coma and was brought home in September 2014, with his medical condition since kept private by his family.

Schumacher won two of his F1 world drivers' titles with Benetton in 1994 and 1995, while he claimed five in a row for Ferrari from 2000 to 2004.

His seven F1 titles is a record shared jointly with Lewis Hamilton, while Schumacher achieved 91 race wins over his career, a record Hamilton surpassed in 2020.

The German originally retired from racing in 2006 but returned in 2010 before again retiring two years later.

Schumacher's son Mick used to drive for Haas in F1 and is currently a reserve driver for Mercedes.

In a 2021 Netflix documentary, Schumacher's wife Corinna said: "We live together at home. We do therapy. We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he's comfortable, and to simply make him feel our family, our bond.

"We're trying to carry on as a family, the way Michael liked it and still does. And we are getting on with our lives.

"'Private is private', as he always said. It's very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible. Michael always protected us, and now we are protecting Michael."

Michael Schumacher Completely Different to Public Perception, Says Former F1 Colleague

Details of Michael Schumacher's current condition have been kept secret ever since his tragic skiing accident in 2013, but he was also very much a private man even in his racing days

BBC 17 JUNE 2023

Michael Schumacher had a "completely different" persona to what Formula 1 fans got to see on race weekends, according to one of his former colleagues. Michael Schumacher came out of retirement to race for Mercedes

Michael Schumacher struggles discussed as ex-F1 team-mate Nico Rosberg gives inside take

The German remains, in the eyes of many fans, the greatest driver the sport has ever seen. His record of seven world titles can be matched only by Lewis Hamilton.

So there was much fanfare when he came out of retirement to help launch the new Mercedes team in 2010. The carmaker took over the Brawn GP team which had just won the championship the previous year.

Ross Brawn was team principal, which made it appealing to Schumacher given their success together at Ferrari. And he formed an all-German driver partnership with Nico Rosberg which was very appealing to the Mercedes brand.

Plenty of other familiar faces were on the books at the time, though some of them were yet to rise to prominence. James Vowles was one of them, now Williams team principal after many years with the Silver Arrows.

During Schumacher's time with Mercedes, Vowles was a fresh-faced strategist. And a large impression was certainly left upon him by the seven-time world champion whose reputation preceded him.

Recalling their time together, Vowles described a man different to what the public perception of Schumacher has been. "I've worked with Michael – he was this incredible individual with an aura and a presence with him as well, completely different to what you see externally," he told the Sky Sports F1 podcast.

WIlliams chief James Vowles recalled his time working with Schumacher at Mercedes

"What he is within a team is this person that is here to help us help the team move forward and brought the team really very close together. He knew everyone's birthdays, he sent flowers to prospective partners as required and really looked after individuals in a great way.

"But what it meant is the team were really pushing for him to be successful and that wasn't through any other mechanism, just being himself.

"What he was also good at is he knew that his performance perhaps was not quite at the same level but he made up for it in terms of the amount of work and dedication he put in and from that, Nico learned a lot."

FINAL Report on Michael Schumachers' Health Issued by F1 Legends' Family Lawyer

Formula 1 icon Michael Schumacher suffered devastating injuries in skiing accident almost 10 years ago in December 2013 and since then little has been made public about his condition

BBC 2 NOV 2023

Michael Schumachers' family lawyer has insisted privacy surrounding his medical condition will continue despite the enormous demand for information about the stricken Formula 1 legend.

Schumacher suffered a skiing accident in December 2013 which led to him being placed in a medically-induced coma. Several months later, he was moved to his family's Lake Geneva home where his care would continue. Beyond that, information about his condition has been scarce ever since. His adoring wife Corinna has fiercely protected the privacy of her husband to the point that only immediate family and very close friends know the details.

Family lawyer Felix Damm has played a significant role in helping her to do that. Speaking to German legal news outlet LTO, he explained why an official report was never made public after the crash. "It was always about protecting private things," he said. "Of course, we discussed a lot about how this is possible. So we also considered whether a final report about Michael's health could be the right way to do this.

"But that wouldn't have been the end of it and there would have had to be constantly updated 'water level reports'. Because as those affected, it is not up to you to put an end to the media. They could pick up on such a report again and again and ask, 'And what does it look like now?' one, two, three months or years after the message. And if we then wanted to take action against this reporting, we would have to deal with the argument of voluntary self-disclosure."

This December will mark a decade since Schumacher's crash. It came only a year after he had retired from F1 for the second and final time, after a three-year spell with Mercedes in which he helped the team to establish itself on the grid before going on to enjoy the remarkable success it has since with another seven-time champion, Lewis Hamilton.

Given the admiration F1 fans have for Schumacher's achievements and the paucity of information regarding his health since the accident, there remains great interest in his condition. Damm understands why that is the case, but warned fans that there is unlikely to be a change in approach from the family.

"Naturally," he replied when asked if he recognises why there is so much interest. Damm added: "But I also believe that the vast majority of fans can deal with it well and also respect the fact that the accident has set in motion a process in which private shelter is necessary and will now continue to be observed."

Michael Schumachers' Family Go Their Own Way as Brother Ralf Speaks Out

Michael Schumachers' health and condition have been a public mystery since the seven-time F1 world champion suffered a tragic skiing accident almost a decade ago

BBC 5 NOV 2023

Schumacher brothers Ralf and Michael both raced in F1 for many years

Michael Schumachers' brother Ralf bemoaned how "unfair" life is as he spoke about his relationship with the stricken Formula 1 stars' immediate family.

Michael, a seven-time F1 world champion, suffered life-changing injuries in a skiing accident in the French Alps in December 2013. He survived but has lived out of the public eye ever since with his loving wife Corinna fiercely protective of his privacy.

As a result, despite almost a decade having passed, updates have been few and far between. Schumacher is cared for at the family's Lake Geneva home and only immediate family, trusted close friends and medical staff know details of his condition.

Ralf Schumacher, himself a former F1 racer, will be one of those trusted with such information. And he declined to give too much away when asked about his brother in a new interview with German magazine Bunte.

But he did speak briefly about his brother's children, hinting at his own relationship with them. "Unfortunately, sometimes life isn't fair. We have to accept it," he said of the tragic twist in Michael's life.

"When I see his children Gina-Maria and Mick, my heart smiles. If someone in the family is looking for my advice, I'm there. They go their own way."

Mick, a reserve driver for Mercedes this year, having driven in F1 for two years with Haas, has previously said how much he would love to be able to call upon his father's wisdom and expertise when it comes to his own racing career.

"I think dad and me, we would understand each other in a different way now," he said. "Simply because we speak a similar language, the language of motorsport. And that we would have so much more to talk about.

"That's where my head is most of the time. Thinking that it would be cool that would be. I would give up everything just for that."
