David Beckham: Paris St-Germain want midfielder to stay

Paris St-Germain want David Beckham to continue at the club next season, even if he retires from playing.

Beckham, 38, came on as a late substitute on Sunday as PSG took the Ligue 1 title with a 1-0 win at Lyon.

"If he decided not to continue his playing career, I hope he'll stay in another role," PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi told L'Equipe.

PSG facts and stats

Founded: 1970
Stadium: Parc des Princes
Owner: Qatar Investment Authority
Coach: Carlo Ancelotti
European honours: Uefa Cup Winners' Cup (1996); Uefa Intertoto Cup (2001)
Season 2012-13: Won Ligue 1 with two games to play. Eliminated on away goals by Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the Champions League

When asked about his plans, the ex-England midfielder said: "I am going to enjoy tonight and that's what matters."

PSG are believed to have offered Beckham a one-year contract extension to the five-month deal he signed when joining in January after he ended a six-year spell playing for Los Angeles Galaxy.

Winning the French league was Beckham's second title in six months, after victory in the Major League Soccer Cup Final in December.

Beckham has featured in 13 matches for PSG in that time, starting in the first leg of the club's eventual quarter-final Champions League defeat to Barcelona.

"To have him among us, on the pitch or off it, is very important," Al-Khelaifi continued. "It's up to him.

"We'll see what David wants to do. We'd like him to continue with us. He's a man of great quality."

David Beckham 'excited' by joining Paris Saint-Germain

The weekend title win - although still provisional because of a possible points deduction after sporting director Leonardo was accused of shoulder-barging a referee - helped Beckham become the first Englishman to claim a league medal in four different countries.

His previous successes were in America with Galaxy, in Spain with Real Madrid and in England with Manchester United.

PSG's triumph was also their first since they were taken over by the investment arm of oil and gas rich nation, Qatar, in 2011.

Since then, hundreds of millions of pounds have been lavished on players such as Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Brazil centre-back Thiago Silva and Argentina striker Ezequiel Lavezzi.
