Conservative Party deputy chairman Lee Anderson said Mr Lineker was "out of touch" and should stick to football. A BBC spokesperson said the star would be "reminded of his responsibilities". On Tuesday, the government outlined plans to effectively ban anyone arriving in the UK via an illegal route from claiming asylum. Anyone found to have entered the country illegally will also be blocked from returning or claiming British citizenship in future. The measure is part of attempts to address an increase in the number of people arriving in the UK via Channel crossings each year, which rose from around 300 in 2018 to more than 45,000 in 2022. Responding to a video message setting out the policy by Home Secretary Suella Braverman, Mr Lineker, 62, tweeted: "Good heavens, this is beyond awful." Told by another user he was "out of order", he added: "We take far fewer refugees than other major European countries. "This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s, and I'm out of order?" It is not clear which language in particular Mr Lineker was referring to, but Ms Braverman's video and accompanying tweet included the words "enough is enough" and "we must stop the boats". Mr Lineker, who has presented Match of the Day since 1999, has in the past been vocal about migrants' rights and has taken refugees into his home. He has also been critical of successive Conservative governments over issues including Brexit. In October, the BBC's complaints unit found Mr Lineker had broken impartiality rules in a tweet asking whether the Conservative Party planned to "hand back their donations from Russian donors". The comment came after then-Foreign Secretary Liz Truss urged Premier League teams to boycott the Champions League final in Russia over the invasion of Ukraine. In 2018, after BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew called on him to "keep your political views... to yourself", Mr Lineker responded: "I'm the face of my own Twitter account. I'll continue to tweet what I like and if folk disagree with me then so be it." The BBC's editorial guidelines state that the organisation is "committed to achieving due impartiality in all its output" and that "public comments, for example on social media, of staff [or] presenters... can affect perceptions of the BBC's impartiality". Writing on Twitter following Mr Lineker's comments on Tuesday, Mr Anderson said the presenter had "piped up again with his virtue-signalling nonsense". "This is just another example of how out of touch these overpaid stars are with the voting public," he said. "Instead of lecturing, Mr Lineker should stick to reading out the football scores and flogging crisps." Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Conservative MP Craig Mackinlay said Mr Lineker's comments were "foul, ill-conceived and disgraceful" and called on the BBC to sack him. A spokesperson for the corporation said: "The BBC has social media guidance, which is published. Individuals who work for us are aware of their responsibilities relating to social media. We have appropriate internal processes in place if required. "We would expect Gary to be spoken to and reminded of his responsibilities." The corporation has also responded to previous criticism of Mr Lineker by highlighting that he is not involved in its news or political output and is a freelance broadcaster, not a member of staff. |

On Twitter, the former England footballer had compared the language used by the government to unveil its new plans as "not dissimilar to" 1930s Germany. The BBC said it it had asked Lineker to step back from presenting after "extensive discussions" with him. The corporation said it considered his "recent social media activity to be a breach of our guidelines", adding it had been "decided that he will step back from presenting Match of the Day until we've got an agreed and clear position on his use of social media". The BBC said the English Premier League football highlights show MOTD on Saturday night will instead "focus on match action". In a later statement, a spokesperson said: "Some of our pundits have said that they don't wish to appear on the programme while we seek to resolve the situation with Gary. "We understand their position and we have decided that the programme will focus on match action without studio presentation or punditry." MOTD commentators Steve Wilson, Conor McNamara, Robyn Rowen and Steven Wyeth all shared a joint statement online on Friday evening, reading: "We have decided to step down from tomorrow's night's broadcast. "We are comforted that football fans who want to watch their teams should still be able to do," they added, explaining that alternative commentary sources were available to the programme. BBC Sport understands a number of players from various clubs contacted the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) to say they may want to show solidarity with Lineker and the MOTD pundits by boycotting the post-match interviews on the show. The PFA - which has been in talks with players and clubs on the matter - are believed to be supportive of any players who choose to do so. Ian Wright was the first pundit to say publicly that he would not appear on Saturday's programme, tweeting: "Everybody knows what Match of the Day means to me, but I've told the BBC I won't be doing it tomorrow. Solidarity." Former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer, who also appears on the show, then said he had "informed the BBC that I won't be appearing on MOTD tomorrow night". Shortly after, ex-Arsenal and Lionesses player Alex Scott hinted that she too would not appear, tweeting a GIF of US politician Bernie Sanders saying "Nah! Not me" with the caption: "FYI...". She was followed by former Manchester City defender Richards, who wrote on Twitter: "I was not due to be working on MOTD tomorrow, but if I was, I would find myself taking the same decision that [Ian Wright] & [Alan Shearer] have." Ex-Tottenham midfielder Jenas then tweeted: "Been on air with the one show. I wasn't down to be doing match of the day tomorrow, but if I was I would of said no and stood with my fellow pundits and [Gary Lineker]." Lineker has not yet publicly commented on the latest developments, but while presenting 5News earlier, former BBC presenter Dan Walker read out a text live on air from the 62-year-old. Walker said he had messaged Lineker asking: "What is happening. Are you stepping back?" He said he had received a reply saying: "No, they've [the BBC] told me I have to step back." The BBC has been told that the Match of the Day production team were not told in advance about its decision. He told BBC Radio 4's PM programme the corporation's Director General Tim Davie had "clearly tried" to reach an agreement with Lineker but failed, adding: "It's inevitable now that having in effect not sacked him but removed him temporarily at least, the BBC will now come under a torrent of criticism saying it's acting under the government's behest." A Labour source told the BBC the corporation should "rethink their decision", calling it a "cowardly decision... an assault on free speech in the face of political pressure". Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the BBC was "undermining free speech in the face of political pressure", while writing on Twitter, Green Party Leader Caroline Lucas said the broadcaster was "capitulating" to a "divisive" government. Goalhanger Podcasts produce some of the most popular podcasts in the UK, including The Rest Is Politics and The Rest is History. Goalhanger Podcasts also produce Match of the Day Top 10, a football podcast involving Lineker, Shearer and Richards that's exclusive to the BBC. Mirror Football has contacted Goalhanger to see if the trio will continue hosting Match of the Day Top 10. Lineker dropped a huge hint of his future while speaking on the Match of the Day Top 10 podcast earlier this year. He said: "Jermaine Jenas - who is probably drifting more towards my role. I think Jermaine is doing it really well as well, doing The One Show." Richards asked Lineker if he was nervous about Jenas taking his job. He replied: "Nervous? I'm ancient. My time is nearly up." Lineker is best known for being one of the most prolific strikers of his generation after playing for the likes of Leicester, Everton, Barcelona and Tottenham. He scored 48 goals in 80 senior appearances for England, winning the 1986 World Cup Golden Boot. Lineker became a pundit after retiring from professional football in 1994 before taking over as the presenter of Match of the Day in 1999 when Des Lynam left the BBC for ITV.
