Former boxer Hector Camacho was shot in the face in Puerto Rico.

Hector "Macho" Camacho, the flamboyant boxer who awed fans with his quick hands and ring antics, was shot and critically wounded in Puerto Rico Tuesday, authorities said.

Camacho was shot Tuesday in front of a bar in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, police said. Camacho, 50, was in the passenger seat of a car and next to him was a man who was shot twice and killed, police said.

Camacho was rushed to a nearby hospital, said Dr. Ernesto Torres, of the Centro Medico of Rio Piedras.

Torres told CNN affiliate WAPA TV the bullet appeared to have entered the left side of the boxer's face and is now lodged in his right shoulder. If Camacho survives his injuries he may have trouble walking in future, Torres said, because the bullet fractured two vertebrae in his neck.

Camacho was born in Bayamon and raised in New York. He fought professionally for more than 25 years and last fought in 2010.

During his career he beat such legendary boxers as Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard and he held several championships.

No one has yet been arrested over the shooting. The former star of the ring was sitting in the passenger seat of a black Ford Mustang outside the "Azuquita" bar when the shots were fired, WAPA TV reported.

Capt. Rafael Rosa, of Bayamon Police, identified the driver killed in the attack as Adrian Mojica. He received one shot to the neck and another to the lower back.

The suspects are two men who are believed to have been traveling in a gray vehicle, said Lt. Wilfredo Rivera, of Cataño Police. They escaped after a shootout with police at a residential complex, WAPA TV reported.

Police in Puerto Rico say they discovered cocaine inside the car in which Hector ''Macho'' Camacho was shot and critically wounded.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP)

Hector ''Macho'' Camacho was clinging to life Wednesday after being shot in the face while in a car, with doctors and his family expected to decide whether to remove the former boxing champion from life support.

Doctors initially had said Camacho was in critical, but stable condition and expected to survive after he was shot Tuesday night in his hometown of Bayamon. But his condition worsened overnight and his heart stopped at one point, said Dr. Ernesto Torres, director of the Centro Medico trauma center in San Juan.

''He's battling minute to minute. This is the most important fight of his life,'' Torres told The Associated Press outside the hospital in the Puerto Rican capital.

The 50-year-old Camacho was shot as he and a friend sat in a Ford Mustang parked outside a bar. Police spokesman Alex Diaz said officers found nine small bags of cocaine in the friend's pocket, and a 10th bag open inside the car. Torres said doctors were trying to determine the boxer's level of brain activity.

The specialists will then consult with other doctors and Camacho's mother, who flew in Wednesday from New York, to discuss whether he should be removed from life support, said Ismael Leandry, a longtime friend and former manager who was also at the hospital.

''We just have to wait to see if `Macho' gets better. It's a hard battle,'' Leandry told AP.

Torres said Camacho's mother, Maria Matias, spent about 20 minutes with her son, one of the most dynamic boxing personalities of his era, and was expected to return for a second visit on Wednesday night.

''His mother came and she is devastated,'' he said. ''She knows the prognosis is not at all favorable.''

A godson, Widniel Adorno, said the family has discussed the possibility of organ donation but no final decision has been made.

Camacho's friend, identified as 49-year-old Adrian Mojica Moreno, was killed in the attack. Police said two assailants fled in an SUV but no arrests have been made and no motive has been disclosed.

Camacho was rushed to Centro Medico, where doctors initially said the bullet passed through his jaw and lodged in his shoulder. Torres said the bullet damaged three of the four main arteries in his neck and fractured two vertebrae, which could leave him paralyzed if he were to survive.

Drug, alcohol and other problems have trailed Camacho since the prime of his boxing career. He was sentenced in 2007 to seven years in prison for the burglary of a computer store in Mississippi. While arresting him on the burglary charge in January 2005, police also found the drug ecstasy.

A judge eventually suspended all but one year of the sentence and gave Camacho probation. He wound up serving two weeks in jail, though, after violating that probation.

His wife also filed domestic abuse complaints against him twice before their divorce several years ago.

Hector "Macho" Camacho, the famed Puerto Rican boxer, is clinically "brain dead," a doctor said Thursday.

A gunman shot him in the face two days ago while he was seated in a black Ford Mustang in front of a bar in his hometown of Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

Camacho, a former lightweight and junior lightweight champion, was in the passenger seat of the car, sitting next to a man who was shot twice and killed, police said. His family is now weighing whether to remove him from life support.

The suspects are two men who are believed to have been traveling in a gray vehicle, said Lt. Wilfredo Rivera, of Cataño Police. They escaped after a shootout with police at a residential complex, WAPA TV reported.

During his career, Camacho, 50, awed fans with his quick hands and ring antics, developing a reputation for flamboyance. Though, he also battled a series legal issues stemming from drugs and other problems.
A southpaw, Camacho fought professionally for more than 25 years and last stepped into the ring in 2010.

He had a career record of 79 wins, six losses and three draws.

`Macho' Camacho Dies in Puerto Rico

Updated Nov 24, 2012 9:26 AM ET

Former championship boxer Hector ''Macho'' Camacho died Saturday at the hospital in Puerto Rico where he has been unconscious since he was shot in the face in an attack in his hometown.

Camacho went into cardiac arrest in the pre-dawn hours and he was then taken off life support and died shortly thereafter, said Dr. Ernesto Torres, the director of the Centro Medico trauma center in San Juan.

Camacho's mother, Maria Matias, said Friday night that she had authorized removing him from life support after his three sons had arrived from the U.S. mainland and had a chance to see their father for the last time. They managed to visit him before he died, said former pro boxer Victor ''Luvi'' Callejas, a longtime friend who has been acting as a family spokesman in recent days.

''The family destroyed,'' Callejas said outside the hospital.

Doctors had declared Camacho brain dead on Thursday. Matias had said she decided it was time for doctors to disconnect life support over the objections of the boxer's eldest son, Hector Jr., because there was no chance of recovery.

''I lost my son three days ago. He's alive only because of a machine,'' she said Friday night. ''My son is not alive. My son is only alive for the people who love him,'' she added.

identified any suspects. He said very few witnesses were cooperating.
Hector Camacho Jr. decried the violence that grips Puerto Rico, a U.S. island territory of nearly 4 million people that reported a record 1,117 homicides last year.

''Death, jail, drugs, killings,'' he said. ''That's what the streets are now.''
Camacho's sisters have said they would like to fly Camacho's body to New York and bury him there. Camacho grew up mostly in Harlem, earning the nickname the ''Harlem Heckler.''

The second day of viewing at the funeral of renowned boxer Hector "Macho" Camacho in his native Puerto Rico wasn't short on controversy, as multiple fights broke out at the scene.

The unfortunate altercations are a reflection of the turbulent, embattled life that the fighter led.
A report by ESPN breaks down the first skirmish that occurred between self-proclaimed girlfriend Cynthia Castillo and Macho's longtime girlfriend Gloria Fernandez, as well as his sisters:
Castillo planted a kiss on the mouth of the slain boxer at the viewing and then walked to the area reserved for family, where she claimed her plate of food was upended. She got into an altercation with Gloria Fernandez, who claimed to have been Camacho's girlfriend for the past 25 years, as well as Camacho's sisters, Esther and Estrella.
Another confrontation transpired when Jorge Lozada—who claimed to be a member of the Camacho family—attempted to separate former bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez from embracing Maria Matias, who is Macho's mother.

Plenty of prominent fighters have been outspoken about their support for Macho and the Camacho family, including Shane Mosley
