Australian Mick Healey, 71, was a star of the game in the 1970s playing most of his career with North Sydney Bears. He turned out for 56 games with them and made two appearances for Manly while scoring a total of 19 tries.

Even at his peak, Healey was a heavy smoker and it was this habit combined with an infection he picked up from a small cut on his finger that led him to catch Buerger’s Disease.

He would roll his own cigarettes and it was nicotine that was on his finger that infected him when he jammed it in a car door. The nicotine led to a reaction known as thromboangiitis obliterans or Buerger’s disease which is a rare inflammatory condition affecting blood vessels in the arms and legs.

It can lead to blood clots and narrowing of blood vessels causing tissue damage. Healey told how he would sometimes smoke more than a packet a day of cigarettes which he said was normal at the time. He told the Daily Telegraph:

“I smoked a packet a day, sometimes more, mainly Marlboro. When it was footy season it was a little bit more than that because everyone would bite me for some. I don’t regret smoking. I enjoyed it. Nearly everyone smoked back then.”
