Don't Be Scared Homie: UFC Star Nick Diaz No Shows Another Event

Let's be honest with each other. I don't normally watch jiu jitsu tournaments for entertainment. Neither do you. I appreciate the skill and technique, but it's a point game, one that sees guys in bleached white bath robes try desperately to put knees on each other's stomachs.
At last night's World Jiu Jitsu Expo, some of the best jiu jitsu artists in the world competed on pay-per-view. There were no submissions. There were no submissions that came particularly close. There were but a handful of actual attempts in the entire hour-plus show. It is a battle of position. Nothing more, nothing less.
I found it fascinating and would watch again, but I'm a sucker for these things, a guy who has watched more submission wrestling and fighting than is healthy for humans to absorb. This is about you. And you watched last night, if anecdotal evidence is any indicator, in relatively large numbers.
Twitter was abuzz with it. Because of Diaz.

The UFC star was set to main event the show against jiu jitsu star Braulio Estima. Banned from MMA competition for the sin of smoking marijuana, this was to be our Diaz fix.
And so we waited last night. And waited. Waited for UFC star Nick Diaz. And Nick Diaz—in perhaps the most Nick Diaz move in the history of the world—never showed up.

It really shouldn't have been much of a surprise. Diaz is famous for missing engagements. Flights, press conferences, phone calls, Diaz does what Diaz wants. But this was different.
The rallying cry of Diaz supporters, fans who followed the fighter through the ups and the downs of his tumultuous career was simple—Diaz may not like the nonsense associated with the fight game, but he'd never miss a bout.

A press conference? Sure. But never a fight.

Now even that has been taken away. Diaz can and will miss a fight, a wedding, possibly even his own funeral one day. And while it's understandable that Nick Diaz has better things to do on a Saturday night than hang out with the likes of us, I just would have liked to know about it before putting up 10 hard-earned dollars for the privilege of finding out if he was planning on gracing us with his presence.

Nick Diaz: The Most Important Fight of His Career Is Today

Nick Diaz had quite the weekend.

By this point, nothing Diaz does should surprise us in the least. As Ben Fowlkes over at MMAFighting.com pointed out, you've only got yourself to blame if you were upset by Diaz no-showing his Saturday night jiu-jitsu superfight against Braulio Estima.

That's not entirely true. I was, in fact, just a little bit surprised. After all, this was jiu-jitsu, one of Nick's great loves. He was doing it for the love of the art and for charity. Surely everything would go according to plan, right?

I guess not. I'm sure we'll get an explanation from the Diaz camp today that makes sense on a certain level. And you can be sure his followers will buy into it, because that's what they do. I really enjoy following Nick's career as it unfolds—even through times like Saturday night, when he makes it increasingly difficult to be a fan—but dealing with his most hardcore of fans? That's a different story entirely.

But in truth, Diaz shouldn't be worried about what transpired on Saturday night. Not today, anyway. Because today is the day Diaz takes his marijuana failure case from February in front of a Las Vegas judge.

Team Diaz is attempting to score an injunction that would put an end to the temporary and indefinite suspension handed down by the Las Vegas commission after Diaz tested positive for marijuana metabolites after the loss to Carlos Condit at UFC 143.

Nick Diaz blames "shady promoter" for BJJ superfight no show

Diaz was originally scheduled to face Estima in the main event of last night's World Jiu-Jitsu Expo, but to disappointment of grappling fans gathered at Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, California, Diaz simply didn't show up.

Today, he (allegedly) released the following status on Diaz Brothers official Facebook page, accusing the WJJ Expo organizers for skewing the weigh-in rules.
Diaz is currently under temporary suspension for failing his postUFC 137 drug test. Tomorrow, former Strikeforce Welterweight champion will appear before the Nevada State Athletic Commission for an official disciplinary hearing, looking to avoid a long-term suspension.
