Basketball Star Brittney Griner: US Could Swap Russia Arms Dealer For Two Americans

The Biden administration has made a "substantial offer" to bring two American detainees home from Russia, the US secretary of state has said.

BBC 28 JUL 2022

Brittney Griner in court ahead of Wednesday's hearing

Reports have suggested Moscow is interested in exchanging basketball star Brittney Griner for convicted Russian arms trafficker Viktor Bout.

Secretary Antony Blinken said he would raise the matter in a call next week with Russia's foreign minister.

Mr Blinken and Sergei Lavrov have not spoken since the war in Ukraine began.

Both the White House and the Department of State declined on Wednesday to disclose details of the proposed deal.

According to CNN, the US hopes to trade Bout for Ms Griner and fellow American detainee Paul Whelan.

The New York Times reports that the US last month offered Russia to swap Bout for Ms Griner and Mr Whelan, and that President Joe Biden had approved the offer.

A lawyer for Bout told Russia's Ria Novosti news outlet that he could not comment on the reports of a possible exchange with his client, but "this could change soon".

Bout's wife, Alla, told Ria Novosti that neither she nor her husband knows anything about plans for such a prisoner trade.

The arms dealer, dubbed the merchant of death, is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence in the US on charges he attempted to sell weapons to a Colombian rebel group to kill Americans.

White House spokesman John Kirby confirmed an offer had been made "several weeks ago", but noted Russia "hasn't favourably engaged so far".

He also acknowledged that negotiations to secure the duo's release were "delicate work" and the decision to go public with word of the proposal was a risky one.

"It's not going to help us get them home if we're negotiating in public," he said.

Mr Kirby added that a White House official had spoken with the Whelan and Griner families ahead of Mr Blinken's announcement, and they would speak again over the next 48 hours.

The deal would be the first concrete action announced by the US government with regard to the release of Ms Griner.

The 31-year-old has been in custody since February after Moscow airport officials found cannabis oil in her luggage, while she was returning to the US after playing in Russia.

At her drug possession trial on Wednesday, Ms Griner said the officials had made her sign documents, but "no-one explained any of it to me".

She also said she received neither an explanation of her rights nor access to a lawyer in the initial hours of her detention, and that she had to use a translation app on her phone to communicate.

The two-time Olympic gold medallist has pleaded guilty to the drug charges against her, but denied deliberately breaking the law, saying she had packed her bags in a rush.

"I still don't understand to this day how [the vape cartridges] ended up in my bags," Ms Griner said.

"With them being accidentally in my bags, I take responsibility, but I did not intend to smuggle or plan to smuggle anything into Russia."

With her detention extended through December, her slow-moving trial will continue in August.

Paul Whelan: Former US Marine sentenced to 16 years hard labour over espionage charges by Russian court

Mr Whelan, a former US Marine, was arrested in Moscow in December 2018.

Convicted of being an American spy in 2020, he is serving a 16-year prison sentence.

The US has said it considers both Ms Griner and Mr Whelan to be wrongfully detained by Russia.

US Basketball Player Jailed For Nine Years in Russia

5 Aug 2022 Sky News

US basketball player Brittney Griner has been sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison for drug possession and smuggling.

President Biden said the sentence was "unacceptable".

Griner told the court she had no intention of breaking the law when she brought vape cartridges with cannabis oil into the country while flying to a basketball match.

Brittney Griner: Russian Court Rejects Appeal Over Jail Term

A Russian court has rejected an appeal by US basketball star Brittney Griner against her nine-year jail term for drug charges.

BBC News 26 OCT 2022.

The court near Moscow upheld the sentence, with the state prosecutor calling it "fair".

The double Olympic winner apologised for her "honest mistake" in the appeal hearing via video link, saying it had been "very, very stressful".

Griner, 32, was convicted in August of smuggling and possessing cannabis oil.

It was not immediately clear whether all her legal routes had been exhausted. She is due to serve her sentence in a penal colony.

The WNBA star's lawyer, Alexander Boykov, said his team hoped that a prisoner exchange would be possible.

In August, the Kremlin raised the possibility of a prisoner swap between the US and Russia involving the basketball player.

Reports in US media suggest imprisoned Russian arms trafficker Viktor Bout - known as the Merchant of Death - could be transferred by Washington to the Russian authorities as part of the deal.

Mr Boykov said: "No judge, hand on heart, will honestly say that Griner's nine-year sentence is in line with Russian criminal law."

He added his legal team would be in talks with Griner as to whether she would want to pursue a further appeal.

Ms Griner's wife, Cherelle Griner, told the CBS Mornings programme on Tuesday that Brittney was a "hostage" of the Russian government.

She said she does not know if the incarcerated American "has anything left in her tank to continue to wake up every day and be in a place where she has no-one".

President Joe Biden, who has called for the Phoenix Mercury centre's release, said the US is in "constant contact" with Russia to get her and other prisoners out.

"So far, we have not been meeting with much positive response, but we're not stopping," Mr Biden said.

Ned Price, a spokesman for the US Department of State, said Secretary of State Antony Blinken had discussed a proposal to Russia for the release of Griner and Paul Whelan, a US citizen and former Marine who was arrested in Moscow on spying allegations.

"We believe Russia should engage seriously and in good faith on this proposal, and we've continued to urge Moscow to do so including in recent days," Mr Price said.

He added the US "will not relent until all wrongfully detained Americans including Brittney and Paul are reunited with their loved ones".

The White House called the legal proceedings in Griner's case a "sham", and a top US diplomat who attended the hearing called the sentence "excessive and disproportionate".

The sports star spoke to the appeals court of three judges remotely from her detention centre in a town near Moscow.

"I really hope that the court will adjust this sentence because it has been very, very stressful and very traumatic," she had told the court.

"People with more severe crimes have gotten less than what I was given," she added.

Why is Brittney Griner in Prison?

Considered one of the world's top women's basketball players, Griner was detained on 17 February at an airport near Moscow when vape cartridges containing cannabis oil were found in her luggage.

She had come to Russia to play club basketball during the US off-season.

Her case has become subject to high-profile diplomacy between the US and Russia, whose relations plummeted after Russia invaded Ukraine in February.

Griner's agent, Lindsay Colas, said in a statement on Tuesday that the sportswoman "is being used as a political pawn", and is "being held in Russia simply because she is American".

She also called on Americans and the global sports community to support Griner and President Biden's efforts to have her released.

"We do not have time," said Ms Colas. "At any moment something might happen, and we must remain focused and unified in our call to return [Griner] to her family immediately."

US Swap For Merchant of Death

Russia frees US basketball star Brittney Griner in prisoner swap for Viktor Bout

BBC News 9 DEC 2022.

The US and Russia have agreed to a prisoner swap between basketball star Brittney Griner and arms dealer Viktor Bout.

Griner was arrested at Moscow airport in February for possessing cannabis oil and last month sent to a penal colony.

Viktor Bout, known as the 'merchant of death, has been locked up in the US for the past 12 years after being convicted of gun-running in the years after the fall of the Soviet Union.

Vladimir Putin has vowed to continue attacking Ukrainian energy systems in comments made at a champagne reception in the Kremlin. The Russian leader added that global criticism of strikes that have left millions without power in winter would "not interfere with our combat missions".

Meanwhile, Russia has released US basketball star Brittney Griner in a prisoner swap for a notorious arms dealer nicknamed "the Merchant of Death". It came as Angela Merkel admitted that she should have spent more money on Germany's military while chancellor.
