Bernie Ecclestone Launches Bizarre Defence of 'Honourable' Vladimir Putin

Bernie Ecclestone and Vladimir Putin have been friends for many years, with their relationship key to the introduction of the Russian Grand Prix within Formula 1.

"If someone had a machine gun and was prepared to shoot Putin, I would stand in front of him"

Ex-F1 driver Daniil Kvyat says banning Russians from sport is "unfair" amid Ukraine war

Nikita Mazepin's controversies, Russian billionaire dad's backing and F1 future in doubt

BBC 2 MAR 2022

Former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone came out in defence of Russian president Vladimir Putin despite his orders for troops to invade Ukraine. Bernie Ecclestone referred to Vladimir Putin as an 'honourable' man

Russia began its military advance into Ukraine in the early hours of February 24, with hundreds having died in the conflict since – many of the deceased innocent civilians.

The day after the attack begun, Ecclestone took part in a radio interview to share some insight on a man with whom he had shared a close relationship in the past.

The 91-year-old has spoken highly of the Russian leader on numerous occasions in the past.

He has also had business relationships with Putin, such as when they struck a deal in 2014 for the Russian Grand Prix to become a regular fixture in the Formula 1 calendar.

It was referring to those dealings in that February 25 interview with Times Radio when Ecclestone spoke highly of the man who had just ordered the might of his armed forces to invade Ukraine.

"As a person I found him very straightforward and honourable," he said. "He did exactly what he said he was going to do without any arguments."

Ecclestone went on to say he felt the 2022 Russian Grand Prix could still go ahead, and that some people may be of the opinion that Putin's actions are justifiable.

"I think it depends very much on what the exact situation is between Ukraine and Russia," he added. "It's not going to make any difference if there is a race in Russia to anything else that has happened in the world.

"I suppose it is the people who are engaged in the event who would decide on it, because maybe other people think it was the right thing for Russia to do. So how can anyone else judge exactly what is happening today?"

It is far from the first time Ecclestone has defended Putin. In a 2019 interview with the Times, he said he would like to see the Russian leader "running Europe".

He even once went as far as to say that he would give his life to save Putin's if necessary.

REALLY ? >>>

"If someone had a machine gun and was prepared to shoot Putin, I would stand in front of him," he added. "Because he's a good guy. He's never done anything that isn't doing good things for people."

Ex-F1 Boss Bernie Ecclestone Says He'd Still Take a Bullet' For Vladimir Putin

During an appearance on Good Morning Britain, Bernie Ecclestone showed support for Russia and said Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appears to still want to be a 'comedian'

Daily Mirror 30 JUN 2022

Good Morning Britain viewers were stunned on Thursday as hosts Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway interviewed Bernie Ecclestone.

The ex Formula One boss appeared live on the ITV show from sunny Ibiza, but some of his comments left people tuning in at home absolutely fuming.

When Kate asked 91-year-old Bernie if he still regarded Russian President Vladimir Putin as a friend, Bernie simply replied: "I'd still take a bullet for him. Id' rather he didn't hurt, but I'd still take a bullet for him."

When the mother-of-two asked why, Bernie continued: "Because he's a first class person and what he's doing is something that he believed was the right thing he was doing for Russia.

"Unfortunately, he's like a lot of business person - certainly like me - that we make mistakes from time-to-time. And when you've made a mistake, you have to do the best you can to get out of it and I think if it had been conducted properly...

"I mean, the other person in Ukraine, I mean his profession I understand, he used to be a comedian and it seems he wants to continue that profession because I think if he had thought about things and made a big enough effort to speak to Mr Putin, who is a sensible person and would have listened to him and could have probably done something about it," Bernie continued.

Father-of-two Ben seemed shocked and replied: "Bernie, what we have are the actions of Putin and the war that he started in Ukraine has led to the death of thousands ok innocent Ukrainians, you can't justify that surely?"

"It wasn't intentional," Bernie replied, before adding: "Look at the times America has moved into different countries which is nothing to do with America."

Kate then clarified: "So just to understand you clearly, you think that President Zelenskyy should have done more to avert this war and it could have been avoided by Zelenskyy's actions, not by a change in Putin's actions?"

"Absolutely," Bernie replied, as Kate asked him to explain himself.

"It wasn't intentional to be a war, and I'm quite sure if Ukraine had wanted to get out of it properly, they could have done," Bernie said calmly.

Kate then said: "Are you worried at all about aligning yourself with Vladimir Putin?"

"Not at all, not at all. He's a person that probably if he was in business he'd made a mistake and wish he hadn't had made it, but after things have happened, it's a bit too late. It could have been stopped very, very easy," Bernie replied.

"I think if you think about it, our friend in Ukraine could have stopped it easier, couldn't he?"

Viewers couldn't believe what they were hearing and took to Twitter to comment.

"Wow #BernieEccleston is a f*cking mentalist! Supporting Putin... get the tw*t off the TV #GMB," one raged.

Another person tweeted: "Get him off the show RIGHT NOW #GMB," while a third said: "Somebody pull the plug on this Bernie Ecclestone interview. Embarrassing! #GMB."

Bernie spoke about Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's former profession as a 'comedian'

A fourth person posted: "This interview with Bernie Ecclestone is car crash telly. Thoughts and prayers with this guys PR team this morning #GMB."

And a fifth viewer added: "What a car crash interview with Bernie Ecclestone. Showing his true dinosaur colours. #GMB."

Elsewhere in the chat, Bernie was asked about Nelson Piquet’s alleged racial slur against Lewis Hamilton.

He told Ben and Kate: "I’ve known him for a very long time. It’s not the sort of thing Nelson would say meaning something bad.

"To him it’s nothing. Just part of conversation. He would never go out of his way to say anything bad.

Bernie also appeared to defend Nelson Piquet’s racial slur against Lewis Hamilton

“As his daughter is the girlfriend of Max Verstappen, probably after seeing the accident he probably exploded and carried that forward.

“I exploded, didn’t say anything obviously. He was upset with the accident thinking it was wrong and thinking it was Lewis' fault. I thought it was.”

He also compared use of the racial slur to being called “overweight or undersized”, saying: “I’m surprised Lewis hasn’t brushed it aside.”

Following the interview with Bernie, host Ben didn't look overly impressed and Kate was heard saying: "Crikey!"

Movies Re: F1 Bernie Ecclestone Guilty of £400m Fraud -Sentenced to 17 Mth Prison-Suspended

EX F1 Chief Bernie Ecclestone Pleads Guilty to FRAUD

Former Formula 1 Chief Bernie Ecclestone Has Received a Suspended 17-Month Prison From Southwark Crown Court After Admitting to Fraud. The Sentence Will be In Effect For Two Years.

BBC 12 OCT 2023

Bernie Ecclestone, the former boss of Formula One, has been given a suspended sentence after pleading guilty to fraud.

The 92-year-old did not declare more than £400m held in a trust in Singapore when asked by tax authorities in 2015.

Ecclestone has agreed in a civil settlement to repay almost £653m to HM Revenues and Customs, a court heard.

He was sentenced to 17 months in prison, suspended for two years.

The billionaire had originally been due to stand trial next month after initially pleading not guilty.

The settlement covers Ecclestone's tax affairs over the past 18 years, including tax, interest and civil penalties.

The court was told that a meeting took place between Ecclestone and HMRC officers in July 2015.

It heard that Ecclestone was "seeking to a draw a line under investigations into his tax affairs" because he "was fed up of paying huge bills for advice".

At the time, he declared he had only one trust which was established on behalf of his daughters.

According to the charge, he had told HMRC he was "not the settlor nor beneficiary of any trust in or outside the UK".

But following an investigation which HMRC has previously described as "complex and worldwide", that answer proved to be inaccurate.

On Thursday, Ecclestone arrived at Southwark Crown Court with his wife Fabiana and spoke only to tell the judge "I plead guilty" and to confirm basic details.

He appeared frail as he rose to address the judge in court.

His legal team argued that the former F1 boss should not face a prison term, owing to his advanced age, medical issues, and low level of risk to the public.

Defending Ecclestone, Christine Montgomery said the defendant "bitterly regrets the events that led to this criminal trial".

Speaking in court following Ecclestone's guilty plea, prosecutor Richard Wright said the defendant had knowingly given an "untrue or misleading" answer to HMRC when he told them he had no further trusts outside the UK.

He continued: "As of 7 July 2015, Mr Ecclestone did not know the truth of the position, so was not able to give an answer to the question.

"Mr Ecclestone was not entirely clear on how ownership of the accounts in question were structured.

"He therefore did not know whether it was liable for tax, interest or penalties in relation to amounts passing through the accounts.

"Mr Ecclestone recognises it was wrong to answer the questions he did because it ran the risk that HMRC would not continue to investigate his affairs.

"He now accepts that some tax is due in relation to these matters."
