Tennis Where is Peng Shuai? Chinese Tennis Star After Sex Abuse

Australian Open: Peng Shuai T-shirt Ban Reversed After Outcry

The organisers of the Australian Open have reversed a ban on T-shirts supporting Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai after a global outcry.

BBC 26 JAN 2022

Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai sparked global concern when she vanished from public view after posting allegations of sexual assault online

Last Friday, security staff had asked spectators to remove T-shirts and a banner saying "Where is Peng Shuai?" before entering the grounds.

Ms Peng vanished for weeks after accusing a top Chinese official of sexual misconduct in November.

She has since re-appeared, but many remain concerned about her wellbeing.

Craig Tiley, chief executive of Tennis Australia - the organising body behind the Australian Open - told reporters they would now allow spectators to wear the T-shirt as long as they attended without the "intent to disrupt" and were "peaceful".

"If someone wants to wear a T-shirt and make a statement about Peng Shuai that's fine," he was quoted as saying in The Sydney Morning Herald.

But he added that banners would still not be allowed as "it really takes away from the comfort and safety of the fans", and that security staff would make decisions on a case-by-case basis.

Tennis Australia had earlier told the BBC that they had a "longstanding policy of not allowing banners, signs or clothing that are commercial or political."

They added they were "happy to welcome" the spectator back to the tournament grounds, but said that "the policy will continue to be applied .. to any items that compromise the safety and comfort of Australian Open fans.

"It did not elaborate further.

The decision to ban the shirt was met with fierce criticism from human rights groups and the international tennis community, with some suggesting that organisers were bowing to pressure from major Chinese corporate sponsors.

Australia's defence minister Peter Dutton also lashed out against the ban, calling Tennis Australia's actions "deeply concerning" in an interview with broadcaster Sky News.

"I think we should be speaking up about these issues, and I'd encourage… tennis organisations, including Tennis Australia [to do so]."

Mr Dutton also praised the actions of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), which has pulled all tournaments from China this year in response to the controversy.

Friday's incident has also sparked the creation of a Gofundme page that promised to print out more T-shirts after reaching its AUD$10,000 (£5,296; $7,179) goal.

Tennis Australia is not the only body that has terms and conditions governing spectators' attire and conduct.

The All England Lawn Tennis Club, which organises Wimbledon, prohibits "any objects or clothing bearing... political statements, objectionable or offensive statements" from the tournament grounds.

In November, Ms Peng posted a 1,600-word note on Chinese social media platform Weibo, accusing former Vice-Premier Zhang Gaoli of forcing her to have sex with him.

She then vanished from the public eye, triggering a wave of global concern among the international tennis community, fans and human rights groups over her whereabouts.

She resurfaced weeks later, and in her first media interview in December following her reappearance, she denied making any accusations of sexual assault and claimed her social media post had faced "a lot of misunderstandings".

Journalist Who Interviewed Peng Shuai Casts Doubt Over Her Freedom

L’Equipe reporter Marc Ventouillac, who spoke to Peng this week, says it is ‘impossible to say’ if the Chinese tennis star is safe

Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai sparked global concern when she vanished from public view after posting allegations of sexual assault online

The Guardian UK 9 FEB. 2022.

Peng Shuai says Weibo post sparked ‘enormous misunderstanding’

L’Equipe reporter Marc Ventouillac, who spoke to Peng this week, says it is ‘impossible to say’ if the Chinese tennis star is safe

China’s Peng Shuai disappeared from public view for weeks after she made public allegations that a former top-ranked communist party forced her to have sex.

One of the journalists who conducted the first sit-down interview with Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai said that the carefully controlled conversation did not answer questions about whether she can speak her mind or move freely.

A Chinese Olympic official was in the room and translated the conversation with Peng, who disappeared from public view for weeks last year after she made public allegations that a former top-ranked Communist party official pressured her into having sex.

Her social media post was deleted quickly, and Peng was not seen for a couple weeks, then appeared only in photo opportunities arranged by Chinese officials. Worries about her led to a global outpouring of fears for her safety.

In the L’Equipe interview this week, Peng denied she had been sexually assaulted and said the social media post which triggered the controversy has been misunderstood.

“Sexual assault? I never said that anyone made me submit to a sexual assault,” the newspaper quoted her as saying.

“This post resulted in an enormous misunderstanding from the outside world,” she also said. “My wish is that the meaning of this post no longer be skewed.”

Marc Ventouillac, one of two journalists for French sports daily L’Equipe who spoke to Peng this week in a restrictive interview arranged with Chinese Olympic officials, says he is still unsure if she is free.

“It’s impossible to say,” he said in English, saying the interview did not prove that she was safe.

Ventouillac says China’s intent was clear to him: by granting the interview as Beijing is hosting the Winter Olympics, Chinese officials hope to put the controversy to rest, so it doesn’t overshadow the event.

“It’s a part of communication, propaganda, from the Chinese Olympic Committee,” Ventouillac told Associated Press on Tuesday, the day after L’Equipe published its exclusive.

Ventouillac said Chinese officials hoped the interview would show “there is no problem with Peng Shuai. See?”.

The interview, as well as a dinner Peng had with International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach and appearances she made at Olympic venues have shone a deliberate and controlled spotlight on the three-time Olympian and former top-ranked doubles player.

On Tuesday, Peng sat with Bach and watched American-born Chinese freestyle skier Eileen Gu win gold at the women’s big air event.

“It’s important, I think, for the Chinese Olympic Committee, for the Communist party and for many people in China to try to show: ‘

No, there is no Peng Shuai affair,’” Ventouillac said.

The women’s professional tennis tour (WTA) said the interview “does not alleviate any of our concerns“ about the allegations she made in November.

“Peng took a bold step in publicly coming forth with the accusation that she was sexually assaulted by a senior Chinese government leader,” Steve Simon, the WTA’s chief executive, said in a statement.

“As we would do with any of our players globally, we have called for a formal investigation into the allegations by the appropriate authorities and an opportunity for the WTA to meet with Peng - privately – to discuss her situation.”

Ventouillac said Peng “seems to be healthy.”

To secure the interview, organised through China’s Olympic Committee with help from the IOC, L’Equipe agreed to send questions in advance and publish her responses verbatim, in question-and-answer form.

Originally allotted a half-hour, Ventouillac said they ended up getting nearly double that and asked all the questions they wanted, beyond the “8 or 10” they pre-submitted.

“There was no censorship in the questions,” he said.

A Chinese Olympic official sat in on the discussion, translating Peng’s comments from Chinese. The newspaper then used an interpreter in Paris to ensure the accuracy of the comments that it published in French on Monday. It was her first sit-down discussion with non-Chinese-language media since the accusation.

“She answered our questions without hesitating – with, I imagine, answers that she knew. She knew what she was going to say,“ Ventouillac said.

“But you can’t know whether it was formatted or something. She said what we expected her to say.”

“We started by asking questions about tennis … It helped her relax, unwind,“ he said.

Ventouillac said she seemed more nervous and careful when asked questions about the post and her relationship with the official.

Ventouillac said one of L’Equipe’s aims for the interview was to show Peng that “she is not alone” and that people around the world are concerned for her.

In a lengthy post in November, Peng wrote that Zhang Gaoli, a former vice premier and member of the ruling Chinese Communist party’s all-powerful politburo Standing Committee, forced her to have sex despite repeated refusals.

The post, on her verified account on a leading Chinese social media platform, Weibo, also said they had sex once seven years ago, and that she developed romantic feelings for him after that. Zhang has not commented on the accusation.

“Originally, I buried all this in my heart,” she wrote. “Why would you even come find me again, take me to your house and force me and you to have sexual relations?”
It was quickly scrubbed from her account.

Peng told L’Equipe that she erased it but didn’t give her reasons beyond saying: “Because I wanted to.”

Where is Peng Shuai? Why The World is Worried About a Chinese Tennis Star

60 Minutes Australia 13 Feb 2022

Rarely, if ever, has a player’s no-show at a major tennis tournament been so noticeable or worrying. We're talking about this year’s Australian Open, but this story has nothing to do with Novak Djokovic. Much more sinister was the absence in Melbourne of Chinese tennis champion Peng Shuai.

Concern about her wellbeing was first raised when she disappeared late last year, almost immediately after publicly accusing a communist party leader of sexually assaulting her. After being missing for several weeks, she’s now been seen at several carefully staged-managed events, including the Winter Olympics, but Peng Shuai’s reappearance has done little to convince the world she’s okay - or that China respects human rights.
