Packers center Scott Wells is coming off his best season at age 31 and has plenty of leverage. It sounds like he intends on using it.

Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel makes the convincing case Tuesday that the newly minted Pro Bowler is likely to leave Green Bay in free agency.

Wells and the Packers disagree on the value of the undersized veteran and Wells doesn’t sound happy about it. Wells wants a top-five center’s contract. McGinn also describes a player with a long memory that remembers being benched for Jason Spitz in 2009 and dangled on the trade market.

McGinn points out there will be a game of musical centers this offseason. Ten teams have their starting center headed for free agency, with Houston’s Chris Myers, New England’s Dan Koppen, and San Diego’s Nick Hardwick on the list with Wells.

The Packers and Wells’ agent will talk to face to face at the Combine. Based on McGinn’s article, it sounds unlikely a deal will be reached between the two sides anytime soon, if ever.
