British teenager Emma Raducanu reached the US Open final as her meteoric rise continued with a stunning straight-set win over Greek 17th seed Maria Sakkari in New York.

Raducanu, 18, extended her dream run with a 6-1 6-4 victory in which her dominance again almost defied belief.

She is the first qualifier to reach a Grand Slam final and will play another teenager Leylah Fernandez on Saturday.

Raducanu is the first British woman in a major singles final in 44 years.

Watched on by Virginia Wade - the last woman to achieve that feat at Wimbledon in 1977 - Raducanu produced another fearless and ruthless victory that stunned those watching on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

After confidently swatting away a volley on her first match point, Raducanu immediately dropped her racquet on the court and covered her mouth with both hands.

Quickly she broke out into a beaming smile before lapping up the acclaim of a rapturous crowd on the world's biggest tennis court.

"The time in New York has gone so quickly, I've been taking care of each day and three weeks later I'm in the final. I actually can't believe it," Raducanu said.

After coming through three qualifying matches to reach the main draw, she has not dropped a set in any of her nine matches at Flushing Meadows.

It is only Raducanu's second Grand Slam tournament and the fourth tour-level event of her career.

Additionally, Raducanu is:

the youngest British Grand Slam finalist in 62 years, since Christine Truman reached the French Open final aged 18 in 1959
the first British woman to reach a US Open final in 53 years, following Wade in 1968
only the fourth British woman to reach a Grand Slam final in the Open era

Before her run to the Wimbledon last 16 earlier this summer, Raducanu was ranked 336th in the world.

This win puts her on the verge of the top 30 after already being assured of becoming the British women's number one by reaching the last four at Flushing Meadows.

Most pertinently, it gives the London teenager - who also passed her A Levels this summer - the opportunity to win one of tennis' most prestigious titles when she faces Canadian 19-year-old world number 73 Fernandez at 21:00 BST on Saturday.

Given the one-sided nature of the victory against Sakkari - and those before it - Raducanu will not be fazed by the occasion.

Fast start pays dividends for Raducanu

Reaching the last 16 at Wimbledon on her Grand Slam debut catapulted Raducanu into stardom, yet somehow she has managed to surpass what she achieved there with the extraordinary exploits in New York.

Yet again she dismantled a much more experienced opponent with such ease that it breathtakingly belied her age and experience.

Former British number one Greg Rusedski said her performance against Sakkari was "worthy of a world number one".

French Open semi-finalist Sakkari, like those opponents before her, was left befuddled by Raducanu's poise and execution. The Greek, who was also aiming to reach her maiden Grand Slam final, was unable to cope with Raducanu's intensity and could not find a solution to negate it.

Raducanu faced seven break points in her opening two service games, seeing them all off to hold both and move into a 3-0 lead with a break sandwiched in-between.

Sakkari became frustrated with her inability to take her opportunities, chuntering at her box and complaining to the umpire before running off to swap her skirt at the first changeover.

In contrast to Sakkari's anxious demeanour, Raducanu seemed completely unflustered by the occasion.

That continued as the Briton, backed by a few fans dressed in Union Jack colours and waving flags, won all the decisive points on the way to clinching the opening set in 36 minutes.

Nerveless finish as Henman provides inspiration

Raducanu's clean ball-striking and composure was shown by the stats: the Briton hitting 17 winners and 17 unforced errors, compared to 17 winners and 33 unforced errors from Sakkari

Being the frontrunner is a position Raducanu has become accustomed to at Flushing Meadows and once she broke for a 2-1 lead in the second set, there looked to be little way back for Sakkari.

Pressure continued to be applied in each of the Greek's next two service games - but she managed to hold and maintain hope by remaining a single break down.

With the Greek player's family looking increasingly tense as they watched on, Sakkari saved five break points in a momentous hold lasting almost 10 minutes for 4-3.

After exchanging holds, Raducanu then had the opportunity to serve for the match.

A wayward forehand put Sakkari 15-0 ahead, before Raducanu found a first serve that could not be returned and led to a loud roar of 'Come on!', which signalled the Briton's relief.

A nerveless forehand down the line was timed to perfection for 30-15 and another penetrating baseline return set up a match point.

With a place in the US Open final beckoning, there were no signs of nerves as she sealed victory with a forehand volley.

Afterwards Raducanu said she had looked to former British number one Tim Henman, standing at the side of the court in his role as a television analyst, for reassuring support before serving on match point.

"Tim is honestly such a big inspiration, he was telling me to treat it one point at a time," she said.

"In moments like this you definitely can't get ahead of yourself and you need stay present.

"I'm grateful to Tim for everything he has done for British tennis and for me."

New York's teenage kicks signals a changing of the guard

Earlier in Thursday's night session, Canadian teenager Fernandez sealed her place in the final by shocking Belarusian second seed Aryna Sabalenka.

Unseeded Fernandez, who turned 19 on Monday, won 7-6 (7-3) 4-6 6-4 to edge a tense semi-final.

Raducanu's victory then set up the eighth Grand Slam final in the Open Era between teenagers.

It is the first since the 1999 US Open when American hope Serena Williams beat Switzerland's Martina Hingis.

The success of Raducanu and Fernandez caps a tournament where a host of young stars have filled the void of several big names - in particular Williams, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal - with superb performances.

Martina Navratilova, the 18-time Grand Slam singles champion, said Raducanu and Fernandez's success was a "changing of the guard" moment.

Naomi Broady, British player on BBC Radio 5 Live: "I am just speechless, I am so so happy for her. It wasn't Maria Sakkari's night but it was the sheer pressure put on her by Emma Raducanu right from the start.

"She had those seven break points, Maria Sakkari, and she couldn't take one. From that moment Raducanu ran away with the match.

"How exciting is this? We're allowed to be excited about this, we're not being British and ahead of ourselves - this is amazing!"

Social media users in China are celebrating British tennis star Emma Raducanu - not just for her historic US Open win, but her Chinese heritage.

The Queen said it was a "remarkable achievement at such a young age" and said she was an inspiration for future tennis players.

There are so many basic milestones that Emma Raducanu has not yet recorded in a professional tennis career that only began in full three months ago. She has never been a direct entrant to a grand slam main draw, she is yet to play a tour-level three set match and she has not even won a match at a WTA tour event.

Yet sometimes a special player comes along and renders convention irrelevant. After three weeks and one of the most astonishing breakout runs in living memory, Raducanu marked herself as a grand slam champion for ever. She ended the US Open where she started it: fearlessly dominating from inside the baseline as she defeated Leylah Annie Fernandez 6-4, 6-3 in a match of the highest intensity to win the title without dropping a set.

This is just Raducanu’s second grand slam main draw appearance and no woman in the Open era had ever won in so few attempts. Along with that distinction is a seemingly endless list of records: Raducanu is the first British woman to win a grand slam title since Virginia Wade’s Wimbledon victory in 1977. She is the first qualifier, man or woman, to win a grand slam title. At 18, she is the youngest grand slam champion since Maria Sharapova in 2004.

From the very beginning of the first slam final between teenagers in 22 years, both players refused to be affected by the moment. Throughout the first set they wrestled the baseline from each other, defended with elite movement and imbued every game with sheer intensity. Raducanu started the match by controlling the early exchanges by constantly changing direction off both wings, and she set the tone by snapping a cross-court backhand winner in the opening game.

After holding serve, Raducanu immediately imposed herself on return, breaking on her sixth break point. But Fernandez responded with her own suffocating return game, breaking back on her fourth break point for 2-1. After 22 long minutes of sheer intensity, they had played only three games.

As she faced her toughest opponent of the championships, Raducanu was at times visibly frustrated by her level as Fernandez’s defence eked out errors that the Briton’s other opponents could not. But as the set wore on, she again began to dominate the key points with her firepower off both wings.

Raducanu made her run at 5-4 with a series of suffocating returns, snapping a cross-court backhand return winner to bring up double set point. Fernandez saved both, including with a bold series of forehands and then Raducanu missed a third. But Raducanu remained on top of the baseline; she drilled a winning inside-out forehand to bring up a fourth set point and then dispatched another big forehand to take the set.

The momentum continued to move Raducanu’s direction as she marched up to lead 6-4, 1-0 and 0-40 on Fernandez’s serve. But with her back to the wall, the Canadian stepped forward and swung freely. She saved all three and then used the momentum to break serve for 2-1. Raducanu responded immediately, calling on her immense return of serve and breaking back with an angled cross-court return winner. After holding serve, she played a ballistic return game and broke again for 4-2 with a running forehand down-the-line passing shot winner.

Two match points came soon after for Raducanu at 5-2, but both times she struck nervous forehands and missed. Fernandez, battle-hardened by four consecutive three-setters, began a last ditch charge. She held serve and then she had the momentum as she attacked Raducanu’s serve. At 30-30, she had her opponent on the ropes and nailed a winning forehand, but as the Briton slid towards a defensive backhand she grazed her left knee as she slid.

Raducanu was bleeding and so with the score at 6-4, 5-3 and a break point down in the biggest match of her life, she was forced to take a medical timeout. Fernandez, who had the momentum, was unsurprisingly displeased and when they finally resumed, she immediately shanked a forehand on the break point.

But then she generated another break point, asking Raducanu a last question. Under grand slam final pressure that has suffocated so many great players over the year, Raducanu’s reaction said all that needs to be known about her grit and composure. She saved the second break point on the front foot with an overhead winner at the top of her reach, then she drilled a backhand down the line to bring up match point. She served it out with an ace, in front of a crowd that included Wade.

After congratulating Fernandez and her team on their run and thanking her own entourage and supporters, the victor said: “It was an incredibly difficult match but I thought the level was extremely high. I hope we play each other in many more tournaments and hopefully finals.”

She added of the final game: “Leylah is always going to play great tennis and always going to fight. That’s just the competitor she is and that’s why she’s here in the final. I knew that I’d have to dig deep and I fell somehow. I thought that would throw myself off balance because I would have to serve. I was just praying not to double fault, really. We got through, just staying in the moment, focusing on what I have to do, my process in the moment really helped in those tough times.”

When Raducanu arrived in New York three weeks ago, there was some caution about her physical condition after an intense few weeks on the road in what still is her first ever long trip away from home for competition. Her flights were booked for the end of the qualifying week because a loss in any round would have been a totally normal result and a valuable learning experience.

And yet, after just her fourth tour level event, she leaves New York as the champion. After starting the summer ranked 366th and the 12th-ranked British player, Raducanu is now the world No 23. Her career earnings at the beginning of the summer stood at $35,185 yet she has earned $2,500,000 (£1.8m) in three weeks.

With every new challenge she has faced, she has learned and adapted in the moment, unlocking new qualities against some of the best tennis players in the world. In a few small weeks she has improved as much as some do in years and there is so much more to come.

Emma said she was "very grateful" to receive praise and support from one of the best coaches in world sport following her US Open success.

After beating 19-year-old Leylah Fernandez to secure a fairy tale first Grand Slam title, aged just 18 and as a qualifier for the tournament, the Briton has been lauded by some of the biggest names in sport.

One of those admirers was Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who said he was impressed by the fact two unseeded teenagers were able to make it to the final of such a huge tournament.

"These two girls were 18 and 19, and what they showed was massively impressive," the German boss said last week.

"Both during the game itself, and then during the trophy ceremony. Both girls, how they spoke, at 18 or 19, that was inspiring to be honest, even more so than the tennis! I was absolutely overwhelmed by the way the two girls presented themselves.

" If you are 18 years old and you win the US Open, there is one thing that has obviously happened in the last 10-15 years – hard work.

"[Raducanu] is for sure the talent of the century, but without hard work it is not possible to be there.

"To see her there and smiling during the game, it really was the nicest thing I could imagine. I will for sure watch women’s tennis much more now than I did in the last few years."

Emma Raducanu's nan wanted British sensation to quit tennis after Wimbledon heroics

Asked by Sky Sports about what the Liverpool manager's praise meant to her, Raducanu said it was "very nice to hear".

She in particular thanked him for speaking publicly about women's tennis, and hoped that it might help raise the profile of the sport.

" It’s very, very nice to hear and I’m very grateful," she said.

"I think that women’s tennis at the moment is extremely strong and the game has all of the players who can win pretty much every event and I’m really grateful to Mr Jurgen Klopp for his comment."

The pair's public praise hinted Raducanu might be a Liverpool supporter, but she refused to say if she follows a specific club team when asked the question.

"My football team is England," said the teen tennis sensation, who was pictured watching the national team in Euro 2020 action at Wembley earlier this summer.

Emma Raducanu fell to defeat in her second round tie at the Linz Open in Austria, going down 1-6, 7-6, 5-7 to world No 106 Wang Xinyu.

It means the US Open champion's remarkable breakthrough campaign is now over, as Wang is the one who progresses to the quarter-final to take on world No 8 Alison Riske.

Things got off to the perfect start for tennis' new star Raducanu as she flew out of the traps in the opener to take game one, however what came next was a shock to many - no more so than the US Open champion.

Wang then set down her precedent and showed she was not there to let the teen sensation walk over her, as she brushed Raducanu aside in the opener.

The world No 106 responded perfectly to the early setback and got herself back level, before breaking the Brit's serve a game later to give her the advantage in set one.

And this pattern would remain throughout as Wang’s brilliance continued as she dominated with her serve - whilst breaking the 18-year-old’s - to ensure she charged away from the recent Grand Slam winner by taking another four games on the bounce to claim the opener 6-1.

After being stunned in set one, Radacunu clearly knew she now had a game on her hands, and had an uphill battle to climb if she was to stop her breakthrough season ending prematurely.

She then began this climb back in the best way possible by giving the world No 106 a taste of her own medicine, as she broke in opener of the second set to claw a game back

However it was more of the same from the relentless Wang who once again broke back one game later, before winning the third to ensure she reinstated her lead in the match.

But a resilient Raducanu was in no mood to let this one slip away from her grasp anytime soon, as she battled back to win the next three games in a row to leave her 4-2 up in the second set, giving her an all-important lifeline.

Just when it seemed the Brit was making her move though, Wang once again rallied back as it was her turn to take three on the bounce, moving her 5-4 ahead in the second, and within touching distance of a quarter-final place.

However as was the story of the set, nothing was over yet as again, as Raducanu battled her way back from the edge of defeat to force the second set into a tie break which she dominated on her way to levelling things up at 1-1.

After surrendering their serves throughout the open two sets, it seemed both players tightened up in the decider as neither were looking to give anything away early on in set three.

Raducanu and Wang traded game-for-game as the match entered the latter stages, however the first break finally came nine games into the decider and it was Wang who took advantage to take a 5-4 lead.

Following the loss of serve, a disgruntled Raducanu returned to her chair clutching her groin as it seemed injury had hit at the very worst time.

After her medical timeout the Brit returned, and returned in fashion as she battled back from her injury worry to break serve to leave the pair locked on five games a-piece in the deciding set.

Despite this it was not enough to secure a quarter-final place, as Wang went on to take the final two games, and the match to bring to an end a remarkable 2021 for Raducanu.

Tennis star Emma Raducanu is set to cap off 2021 in style with an MBE in the New Year Honours list.

The US Open champ, 19, is tipped to become the youngest ever recipient of an MBE.

She will be joined by other sporting icons, while those leading the fight against coronavirus will be honoured too.

Emma shot to fame in September when she beat Leylah Fernandez in the US Open final, just months after taking her A-levels.

Last week she was named the BBC Sports Personality of the Year. And the award from the Queen will round off the year perfectly.

Gareth Southgate’s England soccer heroes are set to be honoured too after lifting the nation in the summer.

They stormed to the Euro 2020 final at Wembley, before losing out to Italy on penalties.

A Whitehall insider said: “In a year marred by Covid, these sporting heroes gave us a reason to be cheerful.

Emma Raducanu said she was “immensely proud and grateful” after her incredible breakthrough year ended with another accolade as she was made an MBE in the New Year Honours.

The 19-year-old has swept the board at 2021’s sporting awards, including the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year, after becoming the first qualifier to win a grand slam title at the US Open in September.

Now Raducanu has achieved the rare distinction of receiving an honour as a teenager having turned 19 in November.

The British number one said: “It makes me immensely proud and grateful to be listed to receive an MBE from Her Majesty the Queen. This year has been full of amazing surprises for me so to end 2021 with this appointment is very special.”

Raducanu is not the youngest sporting star to feature in the prestigious list – swimmer Ellie Simmonds was only 14 when she was made an MBE after winning two gold medals at the 2008 Paralympics.

But the accolade is yet another demonstration of the magnitude of Raducanu’s achievement, with the Kent youngster having begun the year preparing for her A Levels.

She played her first competitive tournament for 15 months in June before bursting into public consciousness with a run to the fourth round on her Wimbledon debut.

That ended with breathing difficulties and a retirement against Ajla Tomljanovic but Raducanu rebounded in extraordinary fashion, sweeping through 10 matches in New York to become the first British woman for 44 years to win a grand slam singles title.

Raducanu’s victory over fellow teenager Leylah Fernandez saw her make tennis history and catapulted her into the global spotlight.

There will be a great deal of scrutiny over what Raducanu does next and how she fares in what will be her first full season as a professional tennis player.

She arrived in Australia on Thursday ahead of her Australian Open debut later in January after a pre-season with new German coach Torben Beltz that was disrupted by a bout of coronavirus.

Currently ranked 19th, Raducanu has no points to defend until June and it is not inconceivable that she could break into the top 10 during the opening months of the year.

Virginia Wade, Britain's last female Grand Slam champion, watched Raducanu's latest victory on Ashe, having this week described the teenager's game as "ticking every box" Fast start pays dividends for Raducanu Reaching the last 16 at Wimbledon on her Grand Slam debut catapulted Raducanu into stardom, yet somehow she has managed to surpass what she achieved there with the extraordinary exploits in New York. Yet again she dismantled a much more experienced opponent with such ease that it breathtakingly belied her age and experience. Former British number one Greg Rusedski said her performance against Sakkari was "worthy of a world number one". French Open semi-finalist Sakkari, like those opponents before her, was left befuddled by Raducanu's poise and execution. The Greek, who was also aiming to reach her maiden Grand Slam final, was unable to cope with Raducanu's intensity and could not find a solution to negate it. Raducanu faced seven break points in her opening two service games, seeing them all off to hold both and move into a 3-0 lead with a break sandwiched in-between. Sakkari became frustrated with her inability to take her opportunities, chuntering at her box and complaining to the umpire before running off to swap her skirt at the first changeover. In contrast to Sakkari's anxious demeanour, Raducanu seemed completely unflustered by the occasion. That continued as the Briton, backed by a few fans dressed in Union Jack colours and waving flags, won all the decisive points on the way to clinching the opening set in 36 minutes. Nerveless finish as Henman provides inspiration Raducanu's clean ball-striking and composure was shown by the stats: the Briton hitting 17 winners and 17 unforced errors, compared to 17 winners and 33 unforced errors from Sakkari Being the frontrunner is a position Raducanu has become accustomed to at Flushing Meadows and once she broke for a 2-1 lead in the second set, there looked to be little way back for Sakkari. Pressure continued to be applied in each of the Greek's next two service games - but she managed to hold and maintain hope by remaining a single break down. With the Greek player's family looking increasingly tense as they watched on, Sakkari saved five break points in a momentous hold lasting almost 10 minutes for 4-3. After exchanging holds, Raducanu then had the opportunity to serve for the match. A wayward forehand put Sakkari 15-0 ahead, before Raducanu found a first serve that could not be returned and led to a loud roar of 'Come on!', which signalled the Briton's relief. A nerveless forehand down the line was timed to perfection for 30-15 and another penetrating baseline return set up a match point. With a place in the US Open final beckoning, there were no signs of nerves as she sealed victory with a forehand volley. Afterwards Raducanu said she had looked to former British number one Tim Henman, standing at the side of the court in his role as a television analyst, for reassuring support before serving on match point. "Tim is honestly such a big inspiration, he was telling me to treat it one point at a time," she said. "In moments like this you definitely can't get ahead of yourself and you need stay present. "I'm grateful to Tim for everything he has done for British tennis and for me." New York's teenage kicks signals a changing of the guard Earlier in Thursday's night session, Canadian teenager Fernandez sealed her place in the final by shocking Belarusian second seed Aryna Sabalenka. Unseeded Fernandez, who turned 19 on Monday, won 7-6 (7-3) 4-6 6-4 to edge a tense semi-final. Raducanu's victory then set up the eighth Grand Slam final in the Open Era between teenagers. It is the first since the 1999 US Open when American hope Serena Williams beat Switzerland's Martina Hingis. The success of Raducanu and Fernandez caps a tournament where a host of young stars have filled the void of several big names - in particular Williams, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal - with superb performances. Martina Navratilova, the 18-time Grand Slam singles champion, said Raducanu and Fernandez's success was a "changing of the guard" moment. What Raducanu has achieved 'does not seem real' - reaction Naomi Broady, British player on BBC Radio 5 Live: "I am just speechless, I am so so happy for her. It wasn't Maria Sakkari's night but it was the sheer pressure put on her by Emma Raducanu right from the start. "She had those seven break points, Maria Sakkari, and she couldn't take one. She has never been a direct entrant to a grand slam main draw, she is yet to play a tour-level three set match and she has not even won a match at a WTA tour event. Yet sometimes a special player comes along and renders convention irrelevant. After three weeks and one of the most astonishing breakout runs in living memory, Raducanu marked herself as a grand slam champion for ever. She ended the US Open where she started it: fearlessly dominating from inside the baseline as she defeated Leylah Annie Fernandez 6-4, 6-3 in a match of the highest intensity to win the title without dropping a set. This is just Raducanu’s second grand slam main draw appearance and no woman in the Open era had ever won in so few attempts. Along with that distinction is a seemingly endless list of records: Raducanu is the first British woman to win a grand slam title since Virginia Wade’s Wimbledon victory in 1977. She is the first qualifier, man or woman, to win a grand slam title. At 18, she is the youngest grand slam champion since Maria Sharapova in 2004. From the very beginning of the first slam final between teenagers in 22 years, both players refused to be affected by the moment. Throughout the first set they wrestled the baseline from each other, defended with elite movement and imbued every game with sheer intensity. Raducanu started the match by controlling the early exchanges by constantly changing direction off both wings, and she set the tone by snapping a cross-court backhand winner in the opening game. After holding serve, Raducanu immediately imposed herself on return, breaking on her sixth break point. But Fernandez responded with her own suffocating return game, breaking back on her fourth break point for 2-1. After 22 long minutes of sheer intensity, they had played only three games. As she faced her toughest opponent of the championships, Raducanu was at times visibly frustrated by her level as Fernandez’s defence eked out errors that the Briton’s other opponents could not. But as the set wore on, she again began to dominate the key points with her firepower off both wings. Raducanu made her run at 5-4 with a series of suffocating returns, snapping a cross-court backhand return winner to bring up double set point. Fernandez saved both, including with a bold series of forehands and then Raducanu missed a third. But Raducanu remained on top of the baseline; she drilled a winning inside-out forehand to bring up a fourth set point and then dispatched another big forehand to take the set. The momentum continued to move Raducanu’s direction as she marched up to lead 6-4, 1-0 and 0-40 on Fernandez’s serve. But with her back to the wall, the Canadian stepped forward and swung freely. She saved all three and then used the momentum to break serve for 2-1. Raducanu responded immediately, calling on her immense return of serve and breaking back with an angled cross-court return winner. After holding serve, she played a ballistic return game and broke again for 4-2 with a running forehand down-the-line passing shot winner. Two match points came soon after for Raducanu at 5-2, but both times she struck nervous forehands and missed. Fernandez, battle-hardened by four consecutive three-setters, began a last ditch charge. She held serve and then she had the momentum as she attacked Raducanu’s serve. At 30-30, she had her opponent on the ropes and nailed a winning forehand, but as the Briton slid towards a defensive backhand she grazed her left knee as she slid. Raducanu was bleeding and so with the score at 6-4, 5-3 and a break point down in the biggest match of her life, she was forced to take a medical timeout. Fernandez, who had the momentum, was unsurprisingly displeased and when they finally resumed, she immediately shanked a forehand on the break point. But then she generated another break point, asking Raducanu a last question. Under grand slam final pressure that has suffocated so many great players over the year, Raducanu’s reaction said all that needs to be known about her grit and composure. She saved the second break point on the front foot with an overhead winner at the top of her reach, then she drilled a backhand down the line to bring up match point. She served it out with an ace, in front of a crowd that included Wade. After congratulating Fernandez and her team on their run and thanking her own entourage and supporters, the victor said: “It was an incredibly difficult match but I thought the level was extremely high. I hope we play each other in many more tournaments and hopefully finals.” She added of the final game: “Leylah is always going to play great tennis and always going to fight. That’s just the competitor she is and that’s why she’s here in the final. I knew that I’d have to dig deep and I fell somehow. I thought that would throw myself off balance because I would have to serve. I was just praying not to double fault, really. We got through, just staying in the moment, focusing on what I have to do, my process in the moment really helped in those tough times.” When Raducanu arrived in New York three weeks ago, there was some caution about her physical condition after an intense few weeks on the road in what still is her first ever long trip away from home for competition. Her flights were booked for the end of the qualifying week because a loss in any round would have been a totally normal result and a valuable learning experience. And yet, after just her fourth tour level event, she leaves New York as the champion. After starting the summer ranked 366th and the 12th-ranked British player, Raducanu is now the world No 23. Her career earnings at the beginning of the summer stood at $35,185 yet she has earned $2,500,000 (£1.8m) in three weeks. With every new challenge she has faced, she has learned and adapted in the moment, unlocking new qualities against some of the best tennis players in the world. Emma Raducanu fell to defeat in Austria against China's Wang Xinyu Emma Raducanu rallied but it wasn't enough to progress at the Linz Open Emma Raducanu fell to defeat in her second round tie at the Linz Open in Austria, going down 1-6, 7-6, 5-7 to world No 106 Wang Xinyu. It means the US Open champion's remarkable breakthrough campaign is now over, as Wang is the one who progresses to the quarter-final to take on world No 8 Alison Riske. Things got off to the perfect start for tennis' new star Raducanu as she flew out of the traps in the opener to take game one, however what came next was a shock to many - no more so than the US Open champion. Wang then set down her precedent and showed she was not there to let the teen sensation walk over her, as she brushed Raducanu aside in the opener. The world No 106 responded perfectly to the early setback and got herself back level, before breaking the Brit's serve a game later to give her the advantage in set one. And this pattern would remain throughout as Wang’s brilliance continued as she dominated with her serve - whilst breaking the 18-year-old’s - to ensure she charged away from the recent Grand Slam winner by taking another four games on the bounce to claim the opener 6-1. After being stunned in set one, Radacunu clearly knew she now had a game on her hands, and had an uphill battle to climb if she was to stop her breakthrough season ending prematurely. She then began this climb back in the best way possible by giving the world No 106 a taste of her own medicine, as she broke in opener of the second set to claw a game back However it was more of the same from the relentless Wang who once again broke back one game later, before winning the third to ensure she reinstated her lead in the match. But a resilient Raducanu was in no mood to let this one slip away from her grasp anytime soon, as she battled back to win the next three games in a row to leave her 4-2 up in the second set, giving her an all-important lifeline. Just when it seemed the Brit was making her move though, Wang once again rallied back as it was her turn to take three on the bounce, moving her 5-4 ahead in the second, and within touching distance of a quarter-final place. However as was the story of the set, nothing was over yet as again, as Raducanu battled her way back from the edge of defeat to force the second set into a tie break which she dominated on her way to levelling things up at 1-1. After surrendering their serves throughout the open two sets, it seemed both players tightened up in the decider as neither were looking to give anything away early on in set three. Raducanu and Wang traded game-for-game as the match entered the latter stages, however the first break finally came nine games into the decider and it was Wang who took advantage to take a 5-4 lead. Following the loss of serve, a disgruntled Raducanu returned to her chair clutching her groin as it seemed injury had hit at the very worst time. After her medical timeout the Brit returned, and returned in fashion as she battled back from her injury worry to break serve to leave the pair locked on five games a-piece in the deciding set.
