Tokyo Olympics 2021

Sir Mo Farah Fails to Qualify For Tokyo Olympics After Nissing 10,000m Time

The Team GB legend will not be taking part in Tokyo after he struggled to make the qualifying time at the final event in Manchester on Friday night

Daily Mirror UK, 26 JUN 2021

Sir Mo Farah will not be competing at the Tokyo Olympics after he missed his final attempt to qualify for the 10,000m event.

The four-time champion missed the qualifying time in an invitational 10,000m at the British Athletics Championships to suffer a devastating blow in Manchester.

Farah needed to go under 27 minutes 28 seconds at Manchester Regional Arena to book his place on the plane to Tokyo ahead of Sunday night’s deadline.

But he clocked 27 minutes 47 seconds and will not be able to defend the 10,000m title he won in 2012 and 2016.

Attention turned to his next move and Farah conceded he would be ready to walk away from the sport if he could no longer cut it at the top.

He said: “It’s a tough one. I’ve always said if I can’t compete with the best I won’t just go to be in a final. Tonight showed it’s not good enough.

“You go out there and give it all and that’s all you have. I tried to push and push and I ran my lungs out.

“That’s all you can do as a human being, give it your all. I’ve had a wonderful career. I’m very grateful. That’s all I had today.”

Farah was targeting history in Japan with no Olympian ever winning five gold medals over 5,000m and 10,000m.

The Brit had cited that as a motivating factor before his failure on Saturday night.

Elsewhere the British Olympic Association is looking to get all its athletes vaccinated before they travel to the games.

TOKYO 2020 Olympics Opening Ceremony Boss Sacked Day Before Show 'Over Holocaust Jokes'

It comes after it emerged that Kentaro Kobayashi made light of the mass murder of six million Jews by the Nazis in a script for a 1998 comedy act, including saying, “Let’s play Holocaust”

BBC News, 22 JUL 2021

The opening ceremony, directed by Kentaro Kobayashi (pictured) is due to take place on Friday

The show director for the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony Kentaro Kobayashi has been fired on the eve of the event over a decades-old skit referencing the Holocaust.

Kobayashi’s firing comes as the latest blow for organisers of the pandemic-delayed Games.

Former PM and a staunch supporter of games Shinzo Abe won’t be allowed to attend the games.

Meanwhile, former PM and ex-Tokyo 2020 President Yoshiro Mori had resigned after making distasteful remarks at women.

SWC Associate Dean and Global Social Action Director, Rabbi Abraham Cooper said: "Any person, no matter how creative, does not have the right to mock the victims of the Nazi genocide.

"The Nazi regime also gassed Germans with disabilities. Any association of this person to the Tokyo Olympics would insult the memory of six million Jews and make a cruel mockery of the Paralympics."

The Games, set to begin tomorrow, have already been delayed by a year due to the pandemic, and will take place without spectators.

Tokyo Olympics 2020 -2021 Opening Ceremony -An Olympics Like No Other

Tokyo Olympics: A Games in a pandemic, new sports, medal hopes and global stars to watch

BBC Sport 23 JUL 2021

The Tokyo Olympic Games are upon us. They look and feel different to any other Games of times gone by, but they are here. At last.

With an unexpected additional year of preparation under their belts, more than 11,300 athletes from 207 nations will compete over the next couple of weeks, all vying to get their hands on the medal they've worked so long for.

When the Games were postponed in March 2020, organisers said the Olympic flame "could become the light at the end of the tunnel". With the Covid-19 pandemic still raging worldwide, that metaphorical tunnel is still being traversed, but Friday's opening ceremony offers a glimmer of that light.

"I think it will be a moment of joy and relief when entering the stadium, a moment of joy in particular for the athletes because I know how much they are longing for this moment," said International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach.

"Then they can finally be there, they can enjoy this moment under very special circumstances."

An Olympics in a Pandemic

Masks, quarantine, saliva tests. Make no mistake, these are an Olympics like no other.

With Tokyo in a state of emergency throughout the Olympics after a spike in Covid-19 infections, the Games have come under huge criticism from the Japanese public, the majority of whom have said they want the Olympics to be cancelled or postponed again.

But safety is paramount for the organisers, and huge precautions are being taken, including holding the Games behind closed doors with no fans, from either Japan or overseas, being permitted inside venues.

As for the athletes, they are under strict restrictions too. They must wear a face mask at all times - except when eating, drinking, training, competing or sleeping - and minimise physical interaction with others, and are being tested for Covid-19 every day.

Team GB's Adam Peaty is looking to defend his 100m breaststroke Olympic title

But unfortunately the virus has affected the Games already, before they have officially started.

On Friday, 19 new cases of Covid-19 were reported, bringing the total of cases related to Games personnel to 106. There have been 11 positive cases among athletes in Tokyo.

Six Team GB athletes have had to isolate in their rooms after being identified as close contacts of someone on their flight who later tested positive for Covid-19.

US tennis player Coco Gauff had to pull out of her debut Games after testing positive before arriving in Tokyo, while Team GB's Dan Evans and Johanna Konta and world number one shooter Amber Hill withdrew for the same reason.

What's New?

There will be a record 339 medal events held across 33 sports, with five new sports - and 34 new events in total - added to the Tokyo 2020 programme by the IOC. Some 48.8% of athletes competing at the Tokyo Olympics are women - a record figure.

The five new sports are karate, skateboarding, sport climbing, baseball/softball and surfing. Baseball and softball technically aren't 'new' sports on the Olympic programme, but they haven't been contested at a Games since Beijing 2008.

New events have been introduced to the boxing, canoe slalom, canoe sprint, cycling, rowing and swimming programmes, while there are new mixed-gender events including a 4x100m mixed medley relay in swimming and a mixed relay in triathlon.

These sports have been introduced in a bid to attract younger audiences and reflect "the trend of urbanisation of sport".

IOC president Bach said: "We want to take sport to the youth. With the many options that young people have, we cannot expect anymore that they will come automatically to us. We have to go to them."

This year's Games are also doing their bit for sustainability. The medals are made from recycled mobile phones, while the Olympic torch was made from aluminium waste from temporary housing built in the aftermath of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.

Only eight new competition venues have been built from scratch, while much of the energy powering Tokyo 2020 comes from renewable sources.

In total, the Games will cost £11.5bn, up 22% because of the one-year delay.

For the first time in 125 years, Team GB have chosen more female athletes than male to compete in an Olympics, with 201 of the 376 athletes originally selected being women. There will be British representation in 26 of the 33 Olympic sports in Tokyo.

Team GB won 65 medals at London 2012, increasing to 67 in Rio four years later. In Tokyo, UK Sport says it hopes between 45 and 70 medals will be won.

This has reduced from the ambition of between 54 and 92 medals that was set in 2018, taking into account the "extraordinary circumstances" presented to athletes and staff in the build-up to the Games.

But Who Will Win Those Medals?

Swimmer Adam Peaty (100m breaststroke), gymnast Max Whitlock (pommel horse) and taekwondo star Jade Jones are tipped to retain their gold medals from Rio, with Jones - the 57kg winner in London and Rio - bidding to become the first British female athlete to win gold at three successive Olympic Games.

Track cyclists Jason and Laura Kenny both have the chance to become GB's most successful Olympian - Jason is currently tied for the record with Sir Chris Hoy on six golds, while Laura is already Britain's most successful female Olympian with four golds.

Sprinter Dina Asher-Smith is the face of the Games for Team GB and has medal chances in the 100m and 200m, while skateboarder Sky Brown, GB's youngest Olympian at just 13, is a medal contender in the women's park event.

Sailor Hannah Mills and rower Mohamed Sbihi will lead Team GB into Friday's opening ceremony, with Tokyo being the first Olympics at which nations can select two flag bearers in a bid to increase gender equality.

Global Stars to Watch

US gymnast Simone Biles, 24, has five Olympic medals, including four gold

American gymnast Simone Biles was one of the standout stars in Rio five years ago.

The 24-year-old won four golds and one bronze at her debut Games and is set to compete in all five events again. If she defends her all-around title she would be the first Olympic gymnast to do so since 1968.

Two more Americans are expected to dominate in the swimming pool. Caeleb Dressel has 'just' the two Olympic golds so far but the 24-year-old is favourite to win up to six gold medals in Tokyo, while Katie Ledecky, who won four golds in Rio to add to her one from London 2012, is expected to compete in up to six events.

In the Olympic Stadium, look out for Jamaica's six-time Olympic medal-winning sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce as well as Swedish pole vaulter Armand Duplantis.

Serbia's tennis world number one Novak Djokovic continues his pursuit of a Golden Grand Slam, having won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon titles this year, and needing the Olympic and US Open titles to complete the feat.

But arguably one of the most anticipated performances of the Tokyo Games will come from 43-year-old transgender weightlifter Laurel Hubbard.

New Zealand's Hubbard, who broke male national records as a junior, will be the first trans athlete to compete at the Olympics in an individual event - the women's 87kg category.

Tokyo Olympics 2020/2021c MEDALS: An Alternative Table - With US 15th

The Olympics medals table was again dominated by the biggest countries like the US, which finished top. But how would the table look if population and wealth were taken into account?

BBC News, 10 AUG 2021.

When it comes to counting the medal spoils, there is a strong sense of deja vu. Every four years, the same few countries rack up medal after medal - the US, China, Russia - and Tokyo 2020 was no different.

The US won 113 medals total, including 39 golds, the most of any country.

So what makes countries like the US dominate, while others lag behind? Economists and data nerds have a few theories.

"It's still loud and clear from the patterns that what matters is population, level of income, and political system," says David Forrest, an economist at the University of Liverpool who researches Olympic predictions.

Population matters, Mr Forrest says, because the bigger the pool of athletes, the more likely it is for a country to produce true competitors.

"It's clear that very few people who are born have got the potential to be a world-class athlete," he says.

Take a country like Luxembourg, which has a population of 633,622. It sent 12 athletes to compete in seven sports, and won no medals. Meanwhile the US, which has the third-largest population in the world, sent 613 athletes to compete in 35 sports and took home more medals than any other country.

Some countries over-perform, given their population size. The BBC came up with an alternative ranking, which looked at the number of medals won per million people. In this scenario, the tiny European nation of San Marino, with a population of just over 33,000, comes out on top, even though it earned only three medals.

The US didn't even crack the top 20, coming in at 60th place.

There are cultural and political factors too. Mr Forrest says that countries that used to belong to the Soviet Union tend to have an advantage, because of the strong sports infrastructure that was established by communist regimes.

Commonwealth countries also tend to do better than expected compared to their size and wealth. Mr Forrest believes that's because Britain was a pioneer in developing sport as we know it today, and brought that enthusiasm for athletic competition with them around the world.

Australia, which often cracks the top-10 for total medal count, is a prime example.

The sports a country chooses to compete in matter too.

In India, cricket is the national sport but is not played at the Olympics. India also does tend to excel at hockey, which is played at the Olympics, but that only yields a maximum of two medals, one for men and one for women. Whereas sports competed by an individual, such as gymnastics, swimming and athletics, can yield several per athlete.

"In general, it doesn't do you a lot of good to be keen on team sports," Mr Forrest says.

Simon Gleave, head of sport analysis at data company Nielsen Gracenote, says it's these myriad factors that make predicting Olympic medal counts tricky. If you just use variables like population and GDP per capita, you tend to underestimate some of the top performing countries.

Past performance, he says, is a much better predictor of who will do well - but that's still only a rough estimate.

"What you won't pick up is countries that are improving fast or declining fast, and I think that's the interesting part in all of this," he tells the BBC.

To better gauge the Olympic winners, Mr Gleave takes into account not only past athletic performance, but how each country has done at other international sporting competitions since the last Olympic games.

Taking that into account, he predicted that India would actually have its best year yet, which it did, finishing 33rd in terms of most medals won. That smashed its previous record of 51st, from 2008.

Russian Olympic Chief Brands Judge a Disgrace as Official Complaint Lodged

The head of the Russian Olympic Committee revealed that he has lodged a complaint with the International Gymnastics Federation over the judging of a gymnastics event at Tokyo 2020

Daily Mirror, 12 AUG 2021

Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) president Stanislav Pozdnyakov has made an official complaint to the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) over the officiating in the rhythmic gymnastics competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The alleged errors in question were made during the women's all-around individual rhythmic gymnastics event and in particular, the ribbon discipline.

A Russian has won gold in the overall event at every Olympics since Atlanta 1996. ROC athlete Dina Averina believes she should have continued that trend, but owing to a lower than expected score in the ribbon despite not making an obvious error, she finished with 107.650 points and a silver medal.

Israel's Linoy Ashram won gold by a tiny margin, earning 107.800 points despite having dropped the ribbon during her routine. Her achievement was truly historic as it made her the first female Israeli to win an Olympic gold medal.

Averina herself and a number of the ROC delegation have made their feelings clear about the officiating.

Averina said: "I don't feel that it was fair today and it was obvious from the very first apparatus when... I got a lower score, so I can't say that it was very fair.

"I can't spot any obvious mistake that I did. I was pretty consistent and clean compared to Linoy who lost the apparatus."

The president of the Russian Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation Irina Viner-Usmanova used stronger terms to berate the standard of judging in the competition. Speaking to Russian state-controlled network RT, she said: "It was simply a disgrace to rhythmic gymnastics.

"Enough, they got tired of Russia. And the judges decided to support this Israeli woman."

Pozdnyakov confirmed the official nature of the complaints, saying: "We have decided that we will not close our eyes to this situation. We are already preparing an official appeal to the FIG."

Russian athletes were forced to compete at Tokyo 2020 under the ROC banner after the Russian federation itself was found guilty of engaging in a state-sponsored doping scheme. All 335 of the ROC athletes who appeared in Tokyo had to prove that they had no links to the doping scandal.
