Prince Harrys' Friendship with Jill Biden - and Joes' Concerned Quip

Prince Harry became close to President-Elect Joe Biden's wife, Dr Jill Biden, through their involvement in his Invictus Games

Daily Mirror UK, 11 NOV 2020

The Bidens have attended all of the Invictus Games events (Image: WireImage)

As Barack Obama's Vice President, Joe Biden was at the centre of American politics for eight years.

He was at the heart of historical decisions, attended national events and represented his country at occasions around the globe.

And he also got to meet some of the most powerful and famous faces in the world - including Prince Harry.

In fact, Joe's wife, Dr Jill Biden, has ended up becoming good friends with the Duke of Sussex, and the Democrat has made a cheeky joke about how much time they've spent together.

Jill first met Harry in 2013 during his royal tour of the States.

During the trip he attended a reception for British and US wounded warriors in Washington, which Joe and Jill were also at as VP and Second Lady.

It was on this visit that Harry attended the Warrior Games, and saw how sport can help people suffering from injuries and illness first hand.

It was from this idea that his Invictus Games was born.

The first event was held in London in 2014 - and Jill was there to support Harry.

They reportedly spent a lot of time together during the visit, and Joe later joked: "Jill went to London for the last Games. She spent too much damn time with Prince Harry!"

The couple also attended the 2017 Canadian games, when Harry stepped out with his girlfriend Meghan Markle for the first time.

Harry and the Bidens were photographed sitting side by side at several of the events, and could be seen cheering and celebrating the results on the court.

Jill and Harry are both passionate about the Games

Even though Harry wasn't allowed to vote in the US Election, he broke royal tradition by speaking openly about politics alongside his wife, Meghan Markle

They urged people to go out and vote, with Harry saying it is time to “reject hate speech, misinformation and online negativity” while his wife described the 2020 race as the "most important of our lifetime".

In the video broadcast as part of Time 100 magazine's annual list of the top 100 most influential people, Harry explained how he would not be able to vote and had never voted in the UK.

Meghan said: "Every four years we are told the same thing, that this is the most important election of our lifetime. But this one is.

Thumbs Up Re: Prince Harry & Meghan Announce Details of 1st Netflix Show

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Announce Details of First Netflix Show

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry signed a multi-million dollar deal with Netflix, and have now announced their first programme with the streaming service

Daily Mirror UK, 7 APR 2021.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have shared the details of their first Netflix show - a docuseries about the Invictus Games.

Heart of Invictus, made by their Archewell Productions company, will follow the competitors as they prepare for the 2022 games.

The couple signed a major deal with Netflix last year, thought to be worth millions of pounds.

Prince Harry, who is Patron of The Invictus Games Foundation, will appear in the show and will serve as executive producer on the series.

He said: “Since the very first Invictus Games back in 2014, we knew that each competitor would contribute in their own exceptional way to a mosaic of resilience, determination, and resolve.

"This series will give communities around the world a window into the moving and uplifting stories of these competitors on their path to the Netherlands next year.

"As Archewell Productions’ first series with Netflix, in partnership with the Invictus Games Foundation, I couldn’t be more excited for the journey ahead or prouder of the Invictus community for continuously inspiring global healing, human potential and continued service."

Harry first introduced Meghan officially as his girlfriend during the 2017 games.

Dominic Reid, chief executive of the Invictus Games Foundation, added: “We’re very excited about the opportunity to shine the global spotlight of Netflix on the men and women that we work with, in order to ensure that even more people can be inspired by their determination and fortitude in working towards their recovery.

“This partnership will also bring in significant funding to the charity. We are extremely grateful to our Founding Patron for his continued efforts to support the military community, and for making this partnership happen.”

Harry helped set up the games after seeing first hand how sport can help people suffering from injury and illness both physically and psychologically on a trip to the US in 2013.

He was a guest at the Warrior Games and decided to come up with an event of his own.

Ted Sarandos, co-CEO and chief content officer of Netflix, said: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the Archewell Productions team are building an ambitious slate that reflects the values and causes they hold dear.

“From the moment I met them, it’s been clear that the Invictus Games hold a very special place in their hearts, and I couldn’t be happier that their first series for Netflix will showcase that for the world in a way never seen before.”

Invictus Games 2022: Harry and Meghan Markle Given VVIP Status by Dutch Police - With No Credible Threat

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will travel to the Netherlands for the Invictus Games this weekend. It has been confirmed the couple will be protected by in-country officials

Daily Mirror 15 APR 2022

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been given “VVIP status” by Dutch police and assured there is “no credible threat” to their safety, ahead of their visit to the Netherlands this weekend for the Invictus Games.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will travel with a private security team who have liaised with and confirmed that the couple will be protected by in-country officials.

The couple’s trip comes just weeks after Harry stayed away from the Duke of Edinburgh’s memorial service in London last month.

He is currently locked in a bitter legal battle with the British government after his taxpayer-funded Met Police armed guards were removed when he quit royal duties.

In High Court papers the duke says he “does not feel safe” in Britain without armed security and says the decision is “unlawful” and “unfair”.

Prince Harry did not attend a memorial for Prince Philip last month due to safety fears

The Mirror exclusively revealed last week that Meghan would make her first trip outside of the United States for two years to accompany Harry to Saturday’s opening ceremony, while they will be followed by a documentary crew from streaming giant Netflix along the way.

Security sources have confirmed to The Mirror that the Duke and Duchess’s private security team have liaised with Dutch authorities and secured a “high level multi-agency protection programme” for the couple for the duration of their trip.

It includes direct links to all law enforcement and emergency services, as well as “detailed exraction processes” in the event of a “personal or larger scale terror attack”.

Harry and Meghan are also understood to have undergone a “hostile environment” training course run by their private security team aimed at protecting them.

The couple have been assured there will be no threats for their safety

Sources have confirmed reports that the Dutch national police’s DKDB Royal and Diplomatic Security Service will have overall responsibility for the Sussexes.

Meghan will only stay for a “few days” while Harry will stay for the duration of the Games, but it is not known whether he will visit his family in the UK as part of his trip overseas.

Dai Davies, a former head of royal protection at Scotland Yard, said the idea that Harry is unable to come to the UK due to safety concerns is “sheer unadulterated nonsense”.

Harry, 37, and Meghan, 40, are understood to have armed protection when they are in the United States, but their private team are not permitted to carry arms in Britain or in Holland.

One source close to the Sussex camp said: “Harry and Meghan have received absolute top assurances that there is no credible threat to their safety.

“This is the view of the Dutch authorities and other agencies across the continent.

Update re: Invictus Games: Prince Harrys' Competition For Disabled VETS Injured in WARS

Harry & Meghans' Secret Visit to Queen on Way to Invictus Games

The couple stopped at Windsor on their way to The Hague, in the Netherlands, for the Invictus Games.

BBC News 15 APR 2022.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex met the Queen on Thursday after flying into the UK, a spokesperson for the couple confirmed to the BBC.

Prince Harry was last reported to be in the UK in July, while Meghan is not thought to have been in the country since 2020.

The Sussexes stepped down as senior royals in January 2020.

Their trip to the UK comes after Prince Harry was absent from a memorial service for his grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh, in London last month.

The Queen is not expected to attend this year's Easter morning church service having already pulled out of the Maundy Service on Thursday - for the first time since 1970.

The 95-year-old monarch has mobility problems and has pulled out of several events recently, including the annual Commonwealth Service.

The duchess last appeared in the UK at the Commonwealth Day Service in March 2020 while the duke was in the UK to unveil a statue of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, in July last year.

The couple are on their way to the Invictus Games in the Netherlands, which will take place from 16 to 22 April.
A film crew is expected to be joining the couple at the games as part of filming for a Netflix series called Heart Of Invictus.

Prince Harry founded the games to aid the rehabilitation of injured or sick military personnel and veterans from across the globe.

Meghan Markle introduced Prince Harry to the stage at the opening ceremony of the Invictus Games and paid tribute to her "incredible husband" before they pair shared a public kiss

Daily Mirror 17 APR 2022

Meghan Markle left Prince Harry on the brink of tears after paying a loving tribute to her "incredible husband" and sharing a sweet kiss at the Invictus Games.

The pair attended the Games opening ceremony in The Hague tonight, arriving at the event hand in hand.

Harry looked smart in a grey suit with an open collar shirt while Meghan paired dark trousers with a £620 white off the shoulder body suit by Khaite and a £12,800 Cartier necklace.

They both addressed the crowd in the arena at the opening ceremony with Meghan taking to the stage first.

She told the crowd: "Good evening everyone. We are so grateful to the Netherlands for welcoming us and hosting the Invictus Games.

"For each team, my husband and I recognise it has taken a lot to get there both physically, emotionally, not least of which for the Ukraine team who we are all standing by - we talked about it yesterday slava ukraini.

"One thing I know for sure is that every single moment it has taken to get here will be worth it.

"Because it is here at the Invictus Games that we honour your years of duty on the field and your continued service to your country, to your family and your community off the field.

The couple exchange a kiss after Meghan introduces Harry to the stage

"Thank you so much for your service and thank you to all of the family and friends that are here that have been supporting you along the way because this is service, this is dedication and this is the Invictus Family.

"Now it is my distinguished honour to introduce someone that I think you’ll all be very excited to hear from.

“He has also spent many late nights and early mornings planning for these games to make them as perfect as possible for each of you.

“I could not love and respect him more and I know that all of you feel the same because he is your fellow veteran, having served two tours of duty in Afghanistan and 10 years of military service.

Princess Eugenies' Hidden Behind-The-Scenes Role For Meghan and Harrys' Secret UK Visit

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are very close to Princess Eugenie, and the Queen's granddaughter played a key role in paving the way for their secret visit to the UK

Daily Mirror 19 APR 2022

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may have shocked royal fans when they rocked up in Windsor for their secret UK visit, but their trip was far from surprise from their family.

The flying visit, which was planned several weeks in advance, gave the couple a chance to catch up with the Queen and Prince Charles

It's the first time Meghan has returned to England since she quit The Firm in 2020.

But it has now been reported that a fifth royal played a huge role in the secret visit - Harry's cousin, Princess Eugenie.

According the the Mail's Richard Kay, she played a big role in setting up the Sussexes' trip to Windsor behind the scenes.

He writes: "It was also the first time Meghan had seen any of her royal in-laws since March 2020. Intriguingly it involved a fifth member of the Royal Family who was not present at either meeting – Princess Eugenie.

"The princess who is temporarily living in her cousin’s Frogmore Cottage with her husband Jack Brooksbank and their son August, is thought to have played an ‘encouraging’ role behind the scenes.

"She is Harry’s closest royal ally – she and Jack visited the Sussexes in California earlier this year – and is also close to the Queen."

Eugenie is very close to Harry and Meghan, and is believed to be the only royal who has the chance to visit their daughter Lilibet when she visited the US earlier this year. Harry and Eugenie were photographed together watching the Super Bowl.

After moving to the US, Meghan and Harry gave her their Windsor home Frogmore Cottage where she has now based her new family.

Prince Harry's relationship with his family has reportedly become strained after he stepped down as a senior royal

The Sussexes stayed with Eugenie, Jack and August during their brief time in the UK.

Harry and Eugenie have been close since they were children, when their mums Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson were good friends. The families would often go on holiday together and were seen giggling together at engagements.

As they grew older, the royal cousins hit the London club scene together and they were regulars at the popular London club, Mahiki, sneaking in the back entrance.

Harry and Prince William on a skiing holiday with Beatrice and Eugenie in 1995

Insiders say that of all of the Queen's grandchildren, Harry and Eugenie had the "most natural connections" and are the "closest of friends".

"Harry had always confided in his cousin when it came to the women in his life.

"Not only did he trust her implicitly, but friends say that she gives great advice and has always been "beyond wise" for her years."

And due to this bond, Eugenie was one of the first people Harry told about Meghan, and he was keen to introduce them.

Eugenie reportedly told a friend Meghan was "just the tonic" for her cousin..

Invictus Games 2022: Prince Harry Urges People to Lean In to Support Invictus Games

Prince Harry has praised the location of the next Invictus Games, calling Dusseldorf "brilliant and filled with amazing people".

BBC News 7 SEP 2022.

Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex is seen on stage during for the Invictus Games Dusseldorf 2023

Public clapped and raised their phones to take pictures of the couple

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex spoke to military personnel and dignitaries during their arrival in Dusseldorf

Crowds gathered outside Dusseldorf City Hall...

Prince Harry has praised the location of the next Invictus Games, calling Dusseldorf "brilliant and filled with amazing people".

He visited the German city to mark one year until the competition for injured military veterans is held there.

Speaking at Merkur Spiel-Arena, he said he was taken with the city's "vibrant atmosphere".

He was joined by Meghan, who made her first UK address this week after quitting as a working royal.

Prince Harry said: "From what I've witnessed today already, I have a good sense of how we will bring the motto of these games - A Home For Respect - to life.

"It is my belief that showing respect and appreciation is just as important as experiencing respect and appreciation. That's the spirit we're bringing to Dusseldorf."

The next Invictus Games will take place next September and the Sussexes have been meeting officials and potential competitors a year on from their start.

Members of the public clapped and raised their phones to take pictures of the couple as they were welcomed with a red carpet arrival in the German city.

Prince Harry encouraged Invictus supporters to "lean in" and enjoy the games for injured veterans.

Speaking in Dusseldorf town hall, he said: "I can't wait to hear the roar of the crowds, to feel the adrenalin of the competition and join in on the laughter and even the tears, happy ones of course, while we get to witness lives being changed right before our eyes."

He added: "In our most vulnerable moments, encouragement is essential.

"So, I ask that we all do our part to provide space for these incredible servicemen and women to be honest, courageous and true to themselves."

This year's games were held in the Netherlands in April, where a film crew for a Netflix documentary called Heart Of Invictus - a series from Harry and Meghan's Archewell Productions following people competing at the event - was seen close to the couple.

The duke founded the Invictus Games to aid the rehabilitation of injured and sick military personnel and veterans across the world.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are due to return to the UK later for the WellChild Awards in London, where the duke is also due to speak.

Those awards, taking place on Thursday, will celebrate seriously-ill children and young people, and those who have made a significant difference to their lives.

On Monday, the duchess told a young audience at the One Young World summit of her own struggle for self-belief.

Their latest visit to Europe comes amid the fallout from an interview with the duchess given to US magazine The Cut which saw Meghan say the couple "upset the dynamic of the hierarchy" of the Royal Family "just by existing".

She also spoke about Prince Harry's relationship with his father and gave details of their lives in California - where they moved after stepping back as working royals in 2020.

Prince Harry Documentary 'Heart of Invictus': Duke Describes Emotional Trauma After Afghanistan

The Story of The Dukes' Sports Competition For Servicemen and Women Who Have Been Injured and Disabled During Wars.

The Duke of Sussex Has Described His Emotional Unravelling After He Returned From Military Service in Afghanistan in 2013 And Why He Wanted to Help Others Cope With The Aftermath.

BBC 31 AUG 2023

In a Netflix documentary series about The Invictus Games, Prince Harry said the "biggest struggle for me was that no one around me who could help or tried to".

The "trigger" for the duke's trauma had been serving in Afghanistan.

But he linked it to the loss of his mother Princess Diana, who had died in 1997 when he was 12 years old.

"Losing my mum at such a young age was trauma that I had that I was never really aware of. It was never discussed, I didn't talk about it and I've suppressed it like most youngsters would have done," said the duke, 38.

"Unfortunately like most of us, the first time you really consider therapy is when you're lying on the floor in the foetal position, probably wishing that you dealt with some of this stuff previously."

The five-part documentary series, Heart of Invictus, tells the story of the dukes' sports competition for servicemen and women who have been injured and disabled.

Prince Harry said he wanted Invictus to be like a safety net to catch people, because he lacked the support or understanding of his own "invisible injuries".

"I didn't have that support structure, that network or that expert advice to identify what was actually going on with me," he said.

An injured veteran tells the duke about the "demons" that have haunted him and held him back.

And in response Prince Harry explained that in his own experience the loss of his mother had left him with "no emotion. I was unable to cry, I was unable to feel, I didn't know it at the time".

But he described the "chaos" when those suppressed feelings were released in later life.

"My emotions were sprayed all over the wall, everywhere I went. I was like: 'How the hell do I contain this? I've gone from nothing to everything,'" he said.

The prince emphasised to contestants the importance of removing stigma around discussing mental health - or what he called "mental fitness".

"The more it makes people feel uncomfortable, the more we need to talk about it," he said.

The documentary series shows the physical and psychological challenges facing injured military veterans, as they prepared to take part in the Invictus Games, first launched by Prince Harry in 2014.

He speaks of the games as being his response to the shock of seeing casualties in the war in Afghanistan and his feeling that the public were not fully aware of the reality of the conflict.

He had two tours in Afghanistan. His first tour in 2008 ended abruptly when a media embargo was broken, while his second tour of four months ended in January 2013.

There are now contestants from 23 countries and a number of injured veterans talk about the importance of the games as an uplifting force in their recovery, in a documentary that follows their often emotional journeys.

The next games will be held in Dusseldorf in Germany next month and the series focuses on the rising numbers of Ukrainian service men and women with injuries following the Russian invasion.

Prince Harry will be at the games in Germany
