TLC 2011: Worst Gimmick Matches in WWE History

Bleachers Report

WWE loves a good gimmick. In fact, it loves them so much that it has ruined all of its best ones by building pay-per-view shows around them.
Remember back in the day, when WWE knew what it was doing, where they would roll out TLC matches or Elimination Chamber matches or Hell in a Cell matches because it actually made sense for the story and not just because the calendar said that we had to have them?

But I digress.

As we know, not all gimmick matches turn out to be as successful as the three that were mentioned before. In fact, there have been a lot of different ones that WWE has tried that have been epic fails and will go down in the history books right alongside the Gobbledy Gooker.
We thought it would be fun to do a countdown of the five worst gimmick matches that WWE has tried in the past that have not worked out as well as someone thought they might when they came up with the idea.

Hog Pen Match

God bless those Godwinn Brothers. They came along during that time where WWE was willing to try any gimmick it possibly could, and they drew that of hog farmers. They even had to yell out "SOOEE!" during their matches.

After the duo managed to get over, which should tell you how dire things were for WWE back in 1995, the next step was to give them their own gimmick match.
What we got was the Hog Pen match, and boy did it suck. The rules were simple: You could win by pin fall, submission or by throwing your opponent into the pen with the pigs.
The fact that Triple H—or as he was known then, Hunter Hearst Helmsley—was actually involved in one of these matches makes me smile.
WWE actually brought the match back in 2009 as a way to humiliate Vickie Guerrero.

Blind Fold Match

Wrestling is hard enough as it is, but when you try to take away the vision of the participants, it is brutal to watch.
WWE tried an experiment at WrestleMania 7 with Jake Roberts and Rick Martel battling with bags over their heads.
What could possibly go wrong?

Basically everything. It wasn't that the match was the worst thing that you have ever seen, it was just an unnecessary gimmick that failed horribly. Fans don't take a match seriously when they see the competitors swinging at nothing.
If you are trying to do a comedy match, that is fine, but don't do it on a pay-per-view.

Any Kind of Match Involving Ripping off Clothes
Bra and Panties Match

For all the criticism that wrestling fans have about WWE's PG direction, at least we got rid of these kinds of matches.
I know that the divas are gorgeous, and we all love to see them running around in as little clothing as humanly possible, but when all the company is doing is putting on a glorified striptease to get women touching each other in their lingerie, enough is enough.
It may not be popular, but I was thrilled to see WWE stop doing these matches. Granted, now we have to suffer through regular matches featuring Kelly Kelly trying to run the ropes and being unable to because she has no business wrestling.

If you want to see the divas in skimpy clothing, search WWE's website. There are plenty of pictures there. Don't waste my time and money by putting these matches on television.

Championship Scramble

The actual Championship Scramble matches weren't that bad. But the rules and concept of the match made so little sense that anything that happened as it was going on seemed so pointless that no one cared.
Here are the actual rules for the match
Two randomly selected ring warriors will start the match, with a new challenger stepping in every five minutes. If a man scores a pinfall or submission on any other in the match, he is declared the “interim” champion—though he will not be historically recognized as such. The title can change hands as many times as necessary throughout the bout, and the Superstar to earn the final pinfall or submission within the 20-minute time limit will be officially declared the WWE Champion or World Heavyweight Champion.
See how simple and logical it all is?
So even if you had 25 pinfalls in the match, the only one that mattered is the one that happens when the bell sounds at the 20-minute mark. If you want to know why wins and losses don't matter anymore, why the WWE and World Heavyweight championships mean nothing, it is because of matches like this.

This match also came about during the ill-fated Mike Adamle era, so we will just chalk it up to him ruining any common sense that WWE had when making booking decisions.
