The Russian defence ministry announced a local ceasefire on Thursday to allow civilians to be evacuated from Ukraine’s besieged port city of Mariupol, according to Agence France-Presse. A humanitarian corridor from Mariupol to Zaporizhzhia, via the Russian-controlled port of Berdiansk, would be opened from 10am (7am GMT), the ministry said on Wednesday.

Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskiy has warned that Russia is massing its forces for a big offensive in the eastern region of Donbas. He said Ukraine was “prepared” for it and added that any Russian withdrawal of troops from around Kyiv had been forced by the fierce resistance of Ukrainian troops.

A Ukrainian border guard who refused to surrender to a Russian warship telling them to “go f*** yourself” has been given a medal for his services after being released in a prisoner exchange.

Roman Hrybov was based on the tiny Snake Island in the Black Sea with 13 other soldiers when he refused to give up despite being outnumbered and being bombarded from sea and air by the Russians.

On being told to put down their weapons, the response from Hrybov by radio that “Russian warship, go f*** yourself”, was broadcast around the world.

Initially it was feared that the soldiers had died as the radio recording suddenly cut out but it was later revealed that some had survived and were taken prisoner.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said at first that all the soldiers would be given posthumous medals.

GCHQ Chief Warns China Over 'Alignment' With Russia

China should not to become "too closely aligned" with Russia following the invasion of Ukraine, the head of UK cyber-intelligence GCHQ has warned.

Sir Jeremy Fleming said China's long-term interests are not served by an alliance with Moscow.

In a rare public address during a visit to Australia, Sir Jeremy also said Russia had "massively misjudged" the situation in Ukraine.

He said Vladimir Putin's advisers are "afraid to tell him the truth".

Sir Jeremy said China's aspirations to become a leading player on the global stage were "not well served by close alliance with a regime that wilfully and illegally ignores" international rules.

The speech at the Australian National University in Canberra comes after Downing Street said Boris Johnson had a "frank and candid" discussion with China's President Xi Jinping last week.

Sir Jeremy said that Russian President Vladimir Putin has made a clear "strategic choice" to align with China as it grows more powerful in opposition to the United States.

He said the Kremlin regards China in the current crisis as a supplier of weapons, technology, and a potential market for its oil and gas.

Russian Troops Leave Chernobyl

There have been concerns about safety at the former plant since the Russian occupation...

According to Ukraine's state nuclear company Energoatom, staff at the plant said there are currently no "outsiders" at the site.

Earlier, it said some Russian forces had set off towards the Belarusian border, leaving a small group behind.

The announcement appears to confirm reports by senior US defence officials on Wednesday of a withdrawal.

Russian troops seized Chernobyl at the beginning of their invasion of Ukraine.

"This morning, the invaders announced their intentions to leave the Chernobyl nuclear power plant," Energoatom said in a statement.

The company also confirmed reports that Russian troops had dug trenches in the most contaminated part of the Chernobyl exclusion zone, receiving "significant doses" of radiation. There are unconfirmed reports that some are being treated in Belarus.

Reuters news agency quoted workers at the plant as saying some of the soldiers had no idea they were in a radiation zone.

The Russian military, however, said that after capturing the plant radiation levels at the plant itself had stayed within a normal range.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in a statement that it was unable to confirm the reports.

Its director did, however, say it was in close consultations with Ukrainian authorities on sending a mission to the Chernobyl plant in the next few days.

Analysis by Victoria Gill, Science Correspondent

While "Chernobyl" is a word that evokes apocalypse, nuclear experts stressed throughout this saga that there was no risk of "another Chernobyl".

There is no working nuclear reactor on the site. As Prof Claire Corkhill from Sheffield University told me at the time, even if buildings containing contaminated material were pierced "we wouldn't be talking about plumes of radioactive smoke".

She was much more concerned when Russian forces attacked a building at the working Zaporizhzhia nuclear facility on 4 March. That incident caused the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to plan a trip to Ukraine - essentially to ask Russian forces to keep nuclear facilities out of the line of fire.

"What is a concern in Chernobyl now," Prof Corkhill told me, "is that we haven't had regular communication between the site and the IAEA, which basically keeps a [safety log] of where any potentially hazardous material is. We now need to go in and establish that none of that material is missing."

Other scientists are concerned about the damage that may have been caused to a place that has become a wildlife refuge and a site of international research collaboration.

Prof Nick Beresford, who studies the exclusion zone's landscape, says his Ukrainian colleagues now don't know if they will have labs to return to. "The zone itself, over the last nearly 40 years, has become a site for wildlife," he added.

"Lots of rare species moved in when people moved out. We just don't know how this will have affected the wildlife."

In recent days Russia has said it will scale down its operations in northern Ukraine around the capital Kyiv and focus its forces on the eastern Donbas region. Chernobyl is located north of Kyiv.

But on Thursday Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Moscow was repositioning rather than withdrawing in order to regroup, resupply and reinforce its offensive in Donbas.

"At the same time, Russia maintains pressure on Kyiv and other cities. So we can expect additional offensive actions, bringing even more suffering," he said.

There was no change in Russia's objective to pursue a military outcome, he added.

The occupation of the Chernobyl site since 24 February, the day of the invasion, has been dogged with concerns about power outages and problems for the staff, many of whom were trapped there for weeks and could not get home.

Although no longer a working power station, Chernobyl was never fully abandoned and still requires constant management.

It is the site of what is considered to be the world's worst nuclear accident in 1986.

The Russian withdrawal follows an announcement several days ago by the mayor of Slavutych, a nearby town housing workers at the plant, that Russian troops had left the town.

Russia Redeploying Forces From Georgia

A man rides past a destroyed Russian tank in Trostyanets, north-east Ukraine...

"Russia is trying to regroup, resupply and reinforce," Jens Stoltenberg said.

The UK said Russia was bringing in between 1,200 and 2,000 troops from Georgia as reinforcements.

Moscow said on Tuesday that it would reduce military activity in northern Ukraine and focus on "liberating" the Donbas region in the south-east.

Mr Stoltenberg said Russia's aim of pursuing a military outcome had not changed.

"We see continued shelling of cities and we see that Russia is re-positioning some of the troops, moving some of them around, most likely to reinforce their efforts in the Donbas region," he said.

"At the same time, Russia maintains pressure on Kyiv and other cities. So we can expect additional offensive actions, bringing even more suffering."

Echoing Mr Stoltenberg's remarks, the UK's Defence Secretary Ben Wallace warned that Russia's change in tactics was "not a retreat".

The UK also said bringing in troops from Georgia had not been part of Moscow's original plan.

"It is highly unlikely that Russia planned to generate reinforcements in this manner and it is indicative of the unexpected losses it has sustained during the invasion," the defence ministry tweeted.

Around 20% of Russian troops around Kyiv have started to reposition, according to a US senior defence official.

The official added that the Russians had largely abandoned Hostomel airport, outside of Kyiv, and are also moving away from the Chernobyl nuclear plant.

But they said Russia was keeping the pressure on in the air, with air strikes continuing to fall on the cities of Kyiv and Chernihiv in the north.

Bombs are also falling on towns and cities in the south, which is becoming the key battlefront, according to Ukrainian interior ministry adviser Vadym Denysenko, cited by Reuters news agency.

On Thursday evening Ukraine's air force appealed for more support from Western countries, saying it was operating outdated equipment that was no match for Russia's more advanced systems, had sustained losses and urgently needed modern fighter jets and air defence systems.

The air force urged provision of F-15 or F-16 fighter jets, which it said had the same advanced technology as the latest Russian fighter jets. Previous discussions had centred around Poland providing Russian-made Mig-29s but the plan was eventually dropped.

It also called for the US Patriot or Norwegian Nasams missile systems.

"Truth: Air superiority is the deciding factor in this war. Air superiority has played a key role in all wars since WWII," Ukraine's air force tweeted.

Russia Concentrating Efforts in Donbas

Map showing the Russian military advance into Ukraine from the east

Though UK intelligence reports say Russian troops have not made much progress in the east since the invasion began, Russia has said it will now concentrate its efforts on "liberating" the region.

The region is home to the self-declared and Russian-backed people's republics of Luhansk and Donetsk, which are part of Ukraine but which Russia recognised as independent three days before invading.

But Ukrainian troops have "stymied" and "frustrated" Russia's progress in the region, said the UK defence intelligence official.

They added it remains to be seen whether the refitting and repositioning of troops will make a difference. But that this could mean the conflict is lengthy and more drawn out.

Russian Warplanes That Violated Swedish Airspace Were Armed With Nuclear Weapons

On March 2 early this month, two Russian planes flew over Swedish airspace reportedly carrying nuclear weapons in what has been suggested as an attempted act of intimidation by the Kremlin as its invasion flags

Russian warplanes armed equipped with nuclear weapons violated Swedish airspace, according to reports.

Two Russian planes flew over the country near Gotland, earlier this month, Swedish media have reported, in "a deliberate act of intimidation".

On March 2, two Russian planes took off from the air base in Kaliningrad, escorted by two fighter jets.

The four jets, two Sukhoi SU 27 and two Sukhoi SU 24's, then violated Swedish airspace over the Swedish Baltic Sea island of Gotland.

According to TV4 Nyheter, the two planes carried nuclear weapons on board, something the pilots were in full knowledge of.

The Swedish government later confirmed this as they summoned Russian officials over the act of aggression, demanding they answer for what happened.

Brit High Velocity Missile Rips in Half Russian Helicopter

A British Starstreak high velocity anti-air missile has brought down its first Russian helicopter with footage showing the aircraft split in two, it is reported

Daily Mirror 2 APR 2022

A Russian helicopter has been shot down by an ultra modern British missile in its first use after being supplied to the Ukraine army.

Footage shows Starstreak, a high-velocity portable anti-air missile, hitting the helicopter and ripping it in half over the Luhansk region in eastern Ukraine, it is reported.

The Starstreak is the UK’s most advanced manned portable missile system and hits targets with three kinetic darts.

A video showing the tail of a Mi-28N helicopter being snapped off has been verified, reported The Times, with a Ministry of Defence source saying it showed a Starstreak in action in Ukraine.

The source also said that the anti-air missile system has been used in Ukraine for almost a week.

The Starstreak missile has been provided to Ukraine forces by the British

Vladimir Putins’ negotiators have said this week that Russian forces would ease back from attacks on Kyiv and northern Ukraine although shelling has continued and there is a fear that they are simply regrouping.

It comes as Ukraine has managed to retake some territory taken from the Russians especially around Kyiv.

Ukrainian President Zelenskiy said in a video address that the military situation in the east remained extremely difficult and Russia was preparing for new strikes in the Donbas region and the city of Kharkiv.

He added that Russian troops in the north of the country were pulling back, slowly but noticeably.

The helicopter was shot down in the Luhansk region of Ukraine

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24, the UK's defence secretary, Ben Wallace, said Starstreak missiles would be sent to help protect the country.

In a statement to MPs, he said:

"In response to a Ukrainian request, the Government has taken the decision to explore the donation of Starstreak high-velocity manned portable anti-air missiles.

"We believe that this system will remain within the definition of defensive weapons but will allow the Ukrainian force to better defend their skies.

"We shall also be increasing the supplies of rations, medical equipment and other non-lethal military aid."

Horror at Mass Killings' in Ukraine as Men Slaughtered With Bodies Littering Streets

'They were executed': Ukrainian officials call Russian actions war crimes

As Russian forces withdraw from the areas around the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, some of the horrors of what they have done are being revealed with bodies being discovered littering the streets of towns

3 Apr 2022 Guardian News

WARNING: GRAPHIC IMAGES:

Ukrainian officials allege that Russian troops have committed war crimes as they retreat from previously occupied areas such as Bucha, Hostomel and Irpin

Horrifying details are emerging of mass killings and men being slaughtered in the street, in the previously Russian occupied areas around Kyiv.

As the Kremlin’s forces pull out of towns and villages around Kyiv, Ukraine ’s forces and journalists from the west are able to step foot back in them for the first time since they were taken early in the invasion.

However, they have been greeted with horror scenes of dead bodies littering the streets.

At least 280 people were found dead in the village of Bucha, after Russian forces left the settlement.

An AFP reporter in the village counted dozens of bodies and one man whose hands were tied.

Their bodies littered the streets, greeting those who entered the village.

A Ukrainian soldier walks past the body of a civilian, who according to residents was killed by Russian army soldiers, as it lies on the street, amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine, in Bucha

Dead bodies litter the streets of Bucha

In the recaptured town of Bucha, reached by news agency Reuters, the sprawled remains of more than a dozen bodies lined one road. A mass grave in the grounds of a church was still open, with hands and feet poking through the red clay heaped on top.

Bucha's mayor, Anatoliy Fedoruk, said more than 300 residents had been killed.

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said she was appalled by atrocities in Bucha and voiced support for the International Criminal Court's inquiry into potential war crimes in Ukraine.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba accused Russia on Sunday of carrying out a deliberate "massacre" in the town and called on the G7 to impose "devastating" new sanctions on Moscow.

"We are still gathering and looking for bodies, but the number has already gone into the hundreds. Dead bodies lie on the streets. They killed civilians while staying there and when they were leaving these villages and towns," his ministry quoted him as saying on Twitter.

Russia denies targeting civilians and rejects war crimes allegations.

The photos show the widespread destruction and horrific actions of the Russian armies amidst fears this is only the beginning.

A video believed to be of one such village shows Ukrainian troops having to slalom their trucks down the streets to avoid all the dead bodies that lay there.

The haunting images show a significant number of dead, cast across the street and at the road side with no one to move their bodies.

EDITORS NOTE: Graphic content / A dead body lies on the ground in a street in Bucha, northwest of Kyiv, as Ukraine says Russian forces are making a "rapid retreat" from northern areas around Kyiv and the city of Chernigiv, on April 2, 2022.

Russian forces withdrew from several towns near Kyiv in recent days after Moscow's bid to encircle the capital failed, with Ukraine declaring that Bucha had been "liberated".

The video ends with two more bodies, of two people who died together.

More horrifying reports are coming from the liberated regions around Kyiv and in Kyiv Oblast.

Anastasiia Lapatina, a Ukrainian journalist, said: “Russians are shooting civilians after tying their hands behind their backs.

M0RE EVIDENCE -- TORTURE BUNKERS

International condemnation of Russian 'war crimes' is growing

3 Apr 2022 Sky News

Images have emerged of Ukrainian civilians lying dead on the streets of Bucha, with residents saying the victims were killed by Russian soldiers without any apparent provocation.

Russia has denied committing the atrocities and described the footage as a "staged performance".

The UK has joined the United States, France and Germany to call for an international investigation.

Sky's Defence and Security Editor Deborah Haynes visited Bucha - a warning her report contains images of dead bodies throughout.

Chilling Satellite Images Show Mass Graves in Ukraine Amid Civilian Slaughter

Chilling satellite images show mass graves in a Ukrainian town as outrage spreads over brutal deaths of civilians.

Pictures show the grave site with an approximately 45-foot long trench in the southwestern section of the area near the Church of St. Andrew and Pyervozvannoho All Saints in Bucha.

Global outrage spread on Monday over civilian deaths in Ukraine including evidence of bound bodies shot at close range and a mass grave found in areas retaken from Russian troops, as artillery bombarded the country's south and east.

Taras Shapravskyi, deputy mayor of Bucha, a town around 40km northwest of Kyiv, said 50 of some 300 bodies found after the Kremlin's forces withdrew late last week were the victims of extra-judicial killings carried out by Russian troops.

Reuters reporters saw one man sprawled by the roadside, his hands tied behind his back and a bullet wound to his head, though the agency could not independently verify those figures or who was responsible for the killings.

Ukrainian authorities were investigating possible war crimes as Moscow said killings were "staged" to sully Russia's name.

Pictures of the destruction and apparent killings of civilians sparked shock and condemnation and looked set to galvanise the United States and Europe into fresh sanctions against Moscow.

But it was not clear how quickly a new package could come together or if it would include Russian energy exports.

The atrocities were also set to overshadow peace talks between Russia and Ukraine due to restart by video link on Monday.

Asked whether Russian President Vladimir Putin would be held accountable for the civilian killings , Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said others also shared the blame.

"I think all the military commanders, everyone who gave instructions and orders should be punished," he told CBS' "Face the Nation" news program.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an independent investigation.

"Putin and his supporters will feel the consequences," said German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, adding that Western allies wouldagree on further sanctions in the coming days.

Germany's Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht said the European Union must discuss banning the import of Russian gas - a departure from Berlin's prior resistance to that idea.

French President Emmanuel Macron said there were very "clear clues pointing to war crimes" by Russian forces and that new sanctions was needed, and Japan said it would consult with allies on that issue.

Macron said new sanctions should include oil and coal.

Suspected Butcher of Bucha Commander Who Led Russian Forces in Massacred Town

The Russian commander behind the atrocities in Bucha has been named. Lieutenant Colonel Azatbek Omurbekov is suspected to be the commander of Russian operations in Bucha

It comes as "mounting evidence" of war crimes committed by Russian forces in the city near capital Kyiv will be discussed by a United Nations Security Council today.

The Ukrainian President - who was seen holding back tears as he visited the aftermath on Monday - will address the council, which is pushing to ensure "justice is done".

Volodymyr Zelensky surveyed the alleged atrocities near capital Kyiv, describing the discovery of raped women and murdered children among the dead.

He was accompanied by defending servicemen after invading troops had retreated from the area.

US President Joe Biden called for Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin to face a war crimes trial, adding he is now seeking further sanctions against Russia.

"This guy is brutal and what's happening in Bucha is outrageous and everyone's seen it," he said in an impassioned speech last night.

Ukrainian officials have vowed to hunt down the "butchers of Bucha" after hundreds of dead civilians were discovered.

Kyiv intelligence sources have named Lt Colonel Azatbek Omurbekov - who leads the 64th Separate Motorised Rifle Brigade which occupied the region - as the commander in the area.

Growing evidence points to barbarism in Bucha with local women and children raped and shot and demands are growing for accountability over atrocities by Vladimir Putin's forces.

Zelensky has warned that worse evidence of mass killings of civilians by Moscow will emerge as the Russian president repositions his troops to the south-east.

President Volodymyr Zelensky (front) walks in the town of Bucha

It will be his first address to the Security Council, whose presidency is held by the UK, with members including Russia and China.

The Ukrainian leader accused Moscow of committing "real genocide", as he appeared visibly emotional, flanked by his soldiers and wearing a bullet-proof vest.

Ihor Zhovkva, deputy head of the office of the President of Ukraine, said Mr Zelensky "will give all the evidence" to the international community at the Security Council meeting.

"If these awful atrocities will not change the agenda of all the world, what will change?" the adviser asked on BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

Mr Zhovkva said Ukraine needs "additional weapons", including tanks and missiles, to "liberate more cities" from Russia control.

Dame Barbara Woodward, Britain's UN ambassador, called images coming from Bucha "harrowing, appalling, probable evidence of war crimes and possibly a genocide".

She cited hundreds of bodies being dumped in the streets or in mass graves and allegations of rape.

Ukrainian reporter Evgeny Spirin said:

“Some of the killed children had their arms tied up. Children….They were tying up children. There were shot dogs."

Wreckage of war in the streets of Ukraine

He added: “Irpen, Bucha, Dmitrievka. How to live with this, and is it worth living at all? How do I explain this to myself, how?

“They must cease to exist. They must all be destroyed, each and every one of them, turned into dust, into mud, into clay, all of them.”

Ukrainian activists and web sleuths have identified the presence of Omurbekov’s forces - which are normally based in the far east of Russia - and a number of other Russian military units.

Russian ‘Barbarians’ Target Wastern Ukraine as Ukraine Veterans Prepare For Battle in Occupied Luhansk

STOP Being Spooked by PUTIN-He WONT STOP at Ukraine -NATO Must Step Up

--- MP Tobias Ellwood -Chair UK Defence Committee RAGES at NATO to step up to save Ukrainians & 'vital' port of Odesa

---NATO must step up to save the "vital" grain export port of Odesa as the Russian onslaught on Ukraine continues, Tobias Ellwood insisted.

Russia Will Regard Weak Sanctions as Permission to Attack', says Zelenskiy

BBC News 7 APR 2022.

Ukraine Veterans Prepare For Battle in Occupied Luhansk

---The sound of Russian artillery grew louder as we drove to a Ukrainian frontline position in Luhansk. The rumble of shelling interspersed with the occasional burst of small arms fire. We were within 500 metres of the Russian positions.

Roman says his troops are ready for a fight with regrouping Russian soldiers

A maze of trenches makes the front line feel like something from the First World War

Anatoly, a 52-year-old soldier, peered through a periscope from his trench to view the Russian positions. He told me "I see the Russians, they look like me".

Western nations have supplied Ukraine with over 17,000 javelin...

This may be a conflict in the 21st century but, at times, with its maze of trenches, it feels more like something from the First World War.

Russia's military offensive in eastern Ukraine is already intensifying. You can see it in the long queues of traffic driving west towards relative safety; you can feel it in the deserted streets as you drive through the towns and cities of the Donbas; and you can hear it with the increasing sound of Russian artillery.

Russia is redeploying more of its forces from northern to eastern Ukraine. The objective is to step up the battle in the Luhansk and Donetsk - parts of which were already controlled by Russian backed separatists. Russia will take advantage of its shorter supply lines - something which proved a problem in its failed offensive on the capital Kiev.

Russia and its proxies now control around 90% of Luhansk and more than half of Donetsk - the old industrial heartlands of Ukraine. There is smoke rising across a landscape already scarred by mining and factories.

Ukrainian forces have been fighting a war here for the past eight years. Their units include some of the country's most battle hardened troops. Western officials say Ukrainian forces stationed in the Donbas are the best trained and equipped units.

As the Russian offensive pushes from the north, east and south there is a real danger they may soon be encircled and cut off.

Ukraine has already lost ground to Russia. But they are digging in for the fight. As we travelled east towards the frontline we saw new defensive positions and trenches being dug.

But he was ready to hold the line. He said "if they try to take our position, I will kill them. If I don't kill them, they will kill me. It's the rules of war."

---Donbas: Ukraine tells residents in the east to evacuate

Maps: Tracking the Russian invasion

Most of the men we talked to believed that their well-prepared trenches and defences will give them the upper hand against the invaders.

Andrej, a 27-year-old soldier, was kept company in his gloomy dug out by his pet dog Lucifer. He told me "we have good weapons and good fortifications and if Russia attacks us here they will lose".

The troops say they've been supplied with western weapons such as javelin anti-tank missiles. They were grateful, but were hoping for more.

Andrej said that President Putin is a "psycho" but he added that his dead Russian soldiers would be good fertiliser for the soil.

The troops looked weary from the fighting, but all said morale was high.

Roman, a deputy commander, had spent four years studying psychology at Lviv University. As well as fighting he was able to offer his men mental health support.

But he said "usually people don't need my help. They have a good motivation for fighting for their family, friends and home, unlike the Russians", who he dismissively described as "zombies".

The Ukrainian troops are all well aware that Russia is redeploying more forces to the east. They know that worse is to come.

But Roman believes that Ukraine's forces are more tactically astute. He said that Russia's military doctrine had not progressed since World War Two, relying on artillery.

That Russian artillery though is already forcing tens of thousands of people to leave their homes.

STOP Being Spooked by PUTIN-He WONT STOP at Ukraine -NATO Must Step Up....

NATO must step up to save the "vital" grain export port of Odesa as the Russian onslaught on Ukraine continues, Tobias Ellwood insisted....

Tobias Ellwood says the west needs to not be ‘spooked’ by Russia

The chair of the Defence Select Committee told Western leaders to stop being "spooked" by Vladimir Putin, as the Russian President has threatened retaliation for any action he feels is a threat from Western nations.

Peace talks are ongoing but the civilian massacre of Bucha in Ukraine has caused outright condemnation for alleged war crimes committed by Russian troops. Tobias Ellwood then went on to explain how important it was for NATO to get involved and control the port of Odesa, so exports can continue.

Sharing Space With The Dead - Horror Outside Chernihiv

---On the white, damp wall of the Yahidne school basement is a crude calendar, drawn in red crayon. It marks a period of unimaginable trauma - from 5 March to 2 April - for the people of this village.

Kremlin Spokesman Peskov Admits Significant Russian Losses

BBC News 8 APR 2022.

Russia has admitted suffering "significant losses of troops" in Ukraine, as the invasion enters its 44th day.

Sharing Space With The Dead - Horror Outside Chernihiv-

Mykola tied himself to a wall so he could sleep standing up

Yahidne, 140km (80 miles) north of Kyiv and just outside the city of Chernihiv which is close to the borders with Belarus and Russia, was occupied by Russian soldiers for nearly a month.

When they entered, they took men, women and children from their homes at gunpoint and held them in the basement of the local school for four weeks - around 130 people cramped into a room roughly 65 sq m (700 sq ft) in size.

Sixty-year-old Mykola Klymchuk was one of them. He offered to show us the basement.

As we climbed down a short flight of stairs, we began to smell the stench of disease and decay. The room was dirty - some mattresses, clothes, shoes and books were strewn on the floor, there were four small cots in the centre and a stash of utensils in one corner.

Mykola took us straight to the far end of the room.

"This was my half a metre of space. I was sleeping standing up," he said. His voice choked up and he started crying. "I tied myself to the railing here with my scarf so I wouldn't fall over. I spent 25 nights like this."

Mykola said you couldn't move at all for fear of stepping on people. About 40 or 50 children were among those held captive, including babies. The youngest was just two months old.

Russian forces were quick to reach villages such as Yahidne as they launched their assault on Chernihiv. For weeks the city of about 300,000 people was cut off as Russian forces surrounded and bombed it, having met resistance. They also destroyed a bridge on the road to the capital Kyiv, leaving residents with nowhere to flee.

Now the Russians have withdrawn following their failure to take Kyiv. The BBC is one of the first news organisations to reach the area and the horror of what happened under both occupation and bombardment can be revealed. So close to the border, people worry too that the Russians could soon return.

About 130 people spent four weeks here

Fifteen-year-old Anastasiia was in the Yahidne basement along with her father and grandmother.

"There was barely any room. We were living sitting up. We were sleeping sitting up. Not that we slept at all. It was impossible. So many shells were landing around here. It was unbearable," she said.

The room had no ventilation. Its two windows were boarded up.

"During my time here, 12 people died," Mykola said.

Living with the dead

Most of them were elderly people. It's unclear what they died of, but Mykola believes some suffocated to death.

When people died, the bodies couldn't immediately be removed. Russian soldiers would not allow it every day. And because of the constant fighting outside - mortar shelling, explosions and gunfire - it was dangerous as well.

This meant that people, including children, lived amidst corpses for hours, and sometimes days, until they could be taken outside.

Anastasiia is scared and clearly suffering from the stress of weeks under siege

"It was very scary. I knew the people who died," says Anastasiia. "They treated us very kindly. I felt so sad, they just died here for no reason."

"In normal conditions, they would not have died. Putin is a war criminal," said Mykola.

"My feet had begun to swell up. But I kept thinking to myself, I have to survive. I have to, for my daughter and two granddaughters."

Most of the time people were not allowed to go out even to use a toilet. They were made to use buckets instead.

"Sometimes the soldiers took people out to use them as shields," Mykola said.

They were allowed to cook on open fires outside twice a day. The village had enough food stocks and a well for water.

One of the Russian soldiers told Mykola they had been told they would be in Ukraine for just four days, which would be enough to take over Kyiv.

Looking for loved ones - in graves

On 3 April, the Russians withdrew from Yahidne.

Ukrainian soldiers are now in the village, and most of those who were trapped have been evacuated to areas nearby.

"I wake up many times every night. I feel like I can hear the sound of shooting. I run to my parents, scared," says Anastasiia.

The Russians occupied villages like Yahidne around Chernihiv in a bid to lay siege to the city and eventually take control of it.

They weren't able to enter the city, but there's been extensive destruction to many parts of it and officials say around 350 civilians have been killed.

Air strikes destroyed Chernihiv apartment blocks

Since Russia's withdrawal from around Chernihiv, volunteers have been burying the dead. One part of the local graveyard is now entirely full of fresh graves, with a placard stuck in each, for the purpose of identification.

Families who have been separated have been coming to see if they can find the grave of their loved ones.

A local football stadium was bombed, Ukrainian officials say by Russian aircraft. A giant crater can be seen in the centre of the field where one bomb fell. Another destroyed a part of the stands, now a mangled mess of broken plastic seats and metal railings.

Next to the stadium, a children's library housed in a historic building has also been badly damaged.

As we drove through the city, we passed several residential neighbourhoods which have been almost flattened.
chernihiv

Some Chernihiv neighbourhoods have been flattened

At Novoselivka, in the north of Chernihiv, destruction is visible as far as the eye can see.

Piles of stones and bricks lie where homes must have stood. We saw a child's pink winter jacket, a teddy bear, a stuffed elephant and pieces of Lego on one of the paths going into the residential area.

Along the way, we saw more bomb craters.

'Why were we not warned?'

A woman and child on bicycles gestured to us to follow them.

Sixty-two-year-old Nina Vynnyk and her grandson, 10-year-old Danylo, wanted to show us their home - only a shell now, everything in and around it has been destroyed.

"There is nothing left," says Nina

Nina's daughter and Danylo's mother, 39-year-old Ludmyla, has lost her leg and is in hospital.

When Nina's home began to be shelled, they ran to another person's house hoping to seek shelter in their basement. But that was bombed too.

"We were knocked out by the explosion. Someone got a concussion, someone was injured. When we came to our senses, I saw that my daughter was screaming, 'Mummy, mummy I don't have a leg'. It was horrible," she said.

Ludmyla crawled to safety and was taken to a hospital.

"I feel like this is a terrible nightmare. It can't be true. Why didn't our government warn us? Why didn't they evacuate us," said Nina.

Four generations of her family lived in the home. "In one moment, there is nothing left. I don't know where I will live in the winter," she said.

She can't afford to pay for prosthetics for her daughter.

On Russian statements that they have not targeted civilians, she says, "He [Putin] is full of lies. There is a woman in a hospital without a leg. That is the truth.

"Let Putin pay for her surgery. Let Putin build this house. He wanted it so much, didn't he? Let him pay for all of it now."

Russia Accused of Monstrous WAR CRIME in Kramatorsk Station Attack

Zelenskiy Calls For ‘Firm, Global Response’ to WAR CRIME at Kramatorsk Train Station

--Volodymyr Zelenskiy likens missile strike to Bucha atrocities after dozens die at train station where civilians were being evacuated to safety

--Hundreds of civilians were at Kramatorsk railway station in eastern Ukraine when two rockets struck. At least 50 people including five children, who had been awaiting evacuation, were killed. A missile shell found at the site had "for the children" written on it. Pictured below

The Guardian UK 9 APR 2022

Volodymyr Zelenskiy has referred to the missile strike on a railway station in eastern Ukraine as a Russian war crime and said it must be one of the charges to feature at any future tribunal over the invasion.

Five children were among at least 50 people killed when a missile hit Kramatorsk railway station on Friday. The US has also blamed Russia, saying it believes it used a short range ballistic missile. Russia has denied responsibility.

Zelenskiy said he expects “a firm, global response … Like the massacre in Bucha, like many other Russian war crimes, the missile strike on Kramatorsk must be one of the charges at the tribunal, which is bound to happen,” he said.

Zelenskiy also repeated his call for more weapons to be provided to Ukraine, and for greater sanctions to be imposed on Russia. “The pressure on Russia must be increased. It is necessary to introduce a full energy embargo – on oil, on gas. It is energy exports that provide the lion’s share of Russia’s profits. Russian banks must also be completely disconnected from the global financial system.”

The Kremlin stood accused of carrying out a “monstrous” war crime in Kramatorsk after a Russian ballistic missile hit its crowded train station.

The powerful Tochka-U rocket landed outside the main station building where 4,000 people were waiting to be evacuated. The authorities had urged residents to leave the region before a Russian military assault expected from next week.

At least 87 people were wounded in the strike, said Pavlo Kyrylenko, the governor of Donetsk Oblast. Many lost limbs. Surgeons at the city’s hospital were struggling to cope, with numerous patients in a critical condition, Kyrylenko said.

He said Russia had used cluster munitions, and its goal was to “sow panic and fear” and to kill as many civilians as possible. “The enemy knew that this is a city, that this is a crowd of people, this is a railway station,” he said.

Ukraine’s foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, angrily accused Moscow of “murderous deliberate slaughter” and vowed: “We will bring each war criminal to justice.”

At the scene, one woman, Natalia, said she heard a “double explosion”. She told AFP: “I rushed to the wall for protection. I saw people covered in blood coming into the station and bodies everywhere on the ground. I don’t know if they were injured or dead.”

Another woman said she was looking for her husband. “He was here. I can’t reach him,” she said.

A video shot in the seconds after the explosion revealed a scene of horror. Bodies lay in the station entrance and between a row of outside seats. There were screams and cries for help. “My lord, so many corpses,” one woman said.

The dead lay next to their luggage, which had been packed for a journey that was meant to take them to the west of the country and to safety. A turquoise pram was abandoned, together with carry-on suitcases and travel pillows. Pools of blood stained the ground.

In a post on his Telegram channel, Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said “Russian monsters” were responsible for the carnage. He suggested it was part of a deliberate Russian strategy to destroy civilian targets, including hospitals and schools.

“[They] have not abandoned their methods. Lacking the strength and courage to fight with us on the battlefield, they are cynically destroying the civilian population,” Zelenskiy wrote, posting photos from the scene.

He added: “This is an evil that has no limits. And if it is not punished, it will never stop.” He said no Ukrainian troops were at the station when it was hit.

Thumbs Up re: PUTINS' WAR-UK & US Investigate Use of Chemical Weapons-Russian Warship Explodes

NATO Moves in to Protect Ukraine Borders

---Full-scale Nato military force to defend borders.

NATO Plans Permanent Military Presence at Border, says Stoltenberg

The Telegraph UK 10 APR 2022

April 9 (Reuters) - NATO is working on plans for a permanent military presence on its border in an effort to battle future Russian aggression, citing NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.

NATO was "in the midst of a very fundamental transformation" that will reflect "the long-term consequences" of Russian President Vladimir Putin's actions, Stoltenberg said in an interview with the newspaper.

"What we see now is a new reality, a new normal for European security. Therefore, we have now asked our military commanders to provide options for what we call a reset, a longer-term adaptation of NATO," it cited Stoltenberg as saying.

Stoltenberg, who recently said he would extend his term as head of the alliance by a year, also said in the interview that decisions on the reset would be made at a NATO summit to be held in Madrid in June.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has triggered Europe's largest refugee crisis since World War Two and led Western nations to rethink their defense policies.

Snake Island: Ukraine Says Troops Who Swore at Russian Warship are Alive

--- Ukraine's navy says the 13 soldiers believed to have been killed defending Zmiinyi (Snake) Island on the first day of the Russian invasion are alive.

BBC News 14 APR 2022.

The border guards were given posthumous honours by the president after they were heard in audio recordings telling a Russian warship to "go to hell".

Russia said at the time that the troops on the island surrendered.

On Monday, the Ukrainian Naval Forces confirmed in a Facebook post that "our brothers-in-arms are alive and well".

The border guards and marines on the island "twice bravely repulsed the attacks of the Russian occupiers" but were unable to continue fighting because they ran out of ammunition, it said.

The Russians "completely destroyed the island's infrastructure", including lighthouses, towers, antennae, and severed communications with the mainland, it added.

The Ukrainian navy also accused Russian forces of illegally detaining the crew of a civilian search and rescue ship that Ukraine sent to the island on a humanitarian mission after the attack, as well as two priests who were accompanying them.

"The illegal seizure of a non-combatant civilian vessel that did not carry out any military mission is a violation of the rules and customs of war and international humanitarian law," it warned.

A Russian defence ministry spokesman announced on Friday that 82 Ukrainian servicemen "laid down their weapons and voluntarily surrendered" on Zmiinyi Island, without mentioning whether the Russian warship carried out any strikes or inflicted casualties.

He said the captives were being "asked to sign an undertaking not to take part in hostilities" and would "be returned to their families in the near future".

Zmiinyi Island lies in the north-western Black Sea, about 48km (30 miles) from the Ukrainian coast and 300km west of Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.

It has a strategic importance that belies its size - only about 16 hectares (40 acres) - with the Atlantic Council think tank calling it "key to Ukraine's maritime territorial claims".

Full-Scale World WAR Three Has Now Begun, Russian State TV Declares

Russians have been told that full-scale World War 3 has already started as declared by state controlled TV as one presenter insists "that's entirely for sure"

Daily Mirror 15 APR 2022

World War Three has already started, according to Russia 's State TV following the sinking of the Moskva.

---Russian television host Olga Skabeyeva told viewers that the conflict "can safely be called World War Three"

The chilling statement from a leading television presenter came as it became clear Moscow has lost another high-flying GRU military intelligence agent in Ukraine, the latest blow to the Kremlin’s most elite spy service.

Olga Skabeyeva told Rossiya 1 channel viewers that "what it's escalated into can safely be called World War Three" and insisted "that's entirely for sure."

The propagandist presenter added: “Now we're definitely fighting against Nato infrastructure, if not Nato itself. We need to recognise that.”

It comes after the sinking of the Russian ship which sent the Kremlin's main propaganda mouthpiece into meltdown last night.

Officials have not acknowledged Ukraine’s claims that it struck the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet with cruise missiles.

The operation would signify one of Kyiv’s biggest military successes since the invasion began.

Captain Alexey Bogomolov, of the 25th separate regiment of GRU special forces (Stavropol), was killed in action in the conflict, it was revealed on Friday.

Military commentator Dmitry Drozdenko said on separate state-run Channel 1: “In actual fact a full-scale multi-level war is underway with the collective West. And the West has long been preparing for the war."

Anchor Olesya Loseva, host of Vremya Pokazhet, told viewers that the West was now supplying "zillions of weapons” to Ukraine.

She argued that Ukraine was doing the West’s bidding by carrying out "yet more provocations, bloody, horrible, completely unthinkable.”

These will “force people to shudder once again and say that Russia Is a country which is unworthy of even being on the world map and that all Russians should simply be wiped off the face of the earth”.

Russian state-controlled TV declared that full-scale World War Three has begun

Ukraines' Richest Man Vows to Rebuild Nation After Zelensky Accused Him of Russia Coup

--Rinat Akhmetov has declared "we will rebuild the entire Ukraine", five months after he was accused of being invited to join a Russian coup by President Volodymyr Zelensky

Ukraine Begins Process to Join EU

--Ukraine vows Mariupol troops will ‘fight to the end’ as surrender deadline passes

Daily Mirror 18 APR 2022

Ukraine's richest man has pledged to help rebuild the besieged city of Mariupol, months after the country's president accused him of considering funding a pro-Russian coup.

Rinat Akhmetov has seen his business empire shattered by eight years of fighting in Ukrain e's east but remains defiant and confident that what he calls "our brave soldiers" will defend the Sea of Azov city reduced to a wasteland by seven weeks of bombardment.

The billionaire has declared "we will rebuild the entire Ukraine ", five months after Volodymyr Zelensky questioned his loyalty to the country.

“We will definitely need an unprecedented international reconstruction program, a Marshall Plan, for Ukraine,” he added, referring to the massive US-led effort to restore Europe in the wake of World War II.

Zelensky had previously questioned the billionaire's loyalty

Akhmetov praised President Zelensky's "passion and professionalism" during the war, seemingly smoothing relations after the Ukrainian leader last year said plotters hoping to overthrow his government had tried to involve the businessman.

Akhmetov called the allegation "an absolute lie" at the time.

"And the war is certainly not the time to be at odds... We will rebuild the entire Ukraine," he said, adding that he returned to the country on February 23 and had been there ever since."

For now, though, his Metinvest company, Ukraine's biggest steelmaker, has announced it cannot deliver its supply contracts and while his financial and industrial SCM Group is servicing its debt obligations.

Mariupol has come under intense fire since the invasion began

"Mariupol is a global tragedy and a global example of heroism. For me, Mariupol has been and will always be a Ukrainian city," Akhmetov said.

"I believe that our brave soldiers will defend the city, though I understand how difficult and hard it is for them."

On Friday, Metinvest said it would never operate under Russian occupation and that the Mariupol siege had disabled more than a third of Ukraine's metallurgy production capacity.

Russia plans to launch 'deepfake' of Volodymr Zelensky bashing Ukrainian cities

"My ambition is to return to a Ukrainian Mariupol and implement our (new production) plans so that Mariupol-produced steel can compete in global markets as before."

Akhmetov, long Ukraine's richest man, has seen his business empire shrink since 2014, when Russia annexed the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea and two eastern Ukrainian regions - Donetsk and Luhansk - proclaimed independence from Kyiv.

According to Forbes magazine, Akhmetov's net worth in 2013 reached $15.4 billion (Ł11.8 billion). It currently stands at $3.9 billion (Ł3billion).

The city has been encircled by the Russian forces

The situation in Mariupol has become increasingly desperate over the past week, with Ukrainian officials suggesting tens of thousands of civilians had died there since the invasion began.

Russia said its troops had cleared most of the port city with only a small contingent of Ukrainian fighters in the giant Illich steelworks, as missiles hit Kyiv and other cities.

Russia’s demand that Ukrainian forces in Mariupol surrender by 3am GMT passed without immediate signs of a response.

Zelensky warned that peace talks would be scrapped if the city’s remaining defenders were killed.

Ex-Russian Minister Reveals Exact Time Vladimir Putin Will Probably Use Nuclear Weapons

Andrei Kozyrev, who served under Putin's predecessor Boris Yeltsin in the 1990s, played down fears that the irrational Russian president will imminently unleash the country's nuclear arsenal

Daily Mirror 18 APR 2022

Vladimir Putin will only resort to using nuclear weapons if Russia faces an "existential threat" - possibly with NATO troops bearing down on Moscow - a former foreign minister has claimed.

Andrei Kozyrev, who served under Putin's predecessor Boris Yeltsin in the 1990s, played down fears that the irrational Russian president may unleash the country's nuclear arsenal any day now.

International experts are split on how likely this is, with his invasion of Ukraine not going to plan.

Mr Kozyrev, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation between 1990 and 1996, told Fox News : "They could be used, but in very, very specific situations.

"If Russia or one of those countries really threatened in their hearts – existentially, that is … if NATO troops come to Moscow, then probably they will resort to nuclear weapons."

Experts fear Vladimir Putin may resort to using nuclear weapons in Ukraine

But he said this scenario is a long way away at the moment.

He said: "But there is no existential threat to Russia under the present circumstances."

At the weekend Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Putin could turn to chemical or nuclear weapons.

He told CNN : "Not only me - all of the world, all of the countries have to be worried because it can be not real information, but it can be truth."

The Ukrainian president continued: "Chemical weapons, they should do it, they could do it, for them the life of the people, nothing. That's why.

"We should think not be afraid, not be afraid but be ready. But that is not a question for Ukraine, not only for Ukraine but for all the world, I think."

The Ukrainian President says the world must be "ready" for Russia to resort to nuclear weapons

These fears were echoed by Prof Nina Khrushcheva, great-granddaughter of former Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev.

Khrushcheva, a professor of International Affairs at The New School in New York City, said she is fearful that Putin may turn to nuclear weapons.

She told Newsweek : "Since there are questions about how far Russia can go to create victory, and nuclear weapons have been part of the conversation on both sides, Russian and the West, the tactical atomic option is potentially imaginable."

She added that her remarks are "not a prediction."

Putin today said Western countries had scored an own goal by imposing sanctions against Russia over Ukraine which he said had led to a "deterioration of the economy in the West".

Speaking on the state of Russia's domestic economy, Putin said that inflation was stabilising and that retail demand in the country had normalised.

Western countries have imposed unprecedented sanctions on Russia's corporate and financial system since it sent troops into Ukraine on February 24.

Vladimir Putin Tests Satan II Nuclear Missile That Can Hit Anywhere in The World

Ukraine Offers Unconditional Talks on Mariupol as West Warns of Russian Cyber-Attacks

BBC 21 Apr 2022

Vladimir Putin boasted that he had unleashed the first successful test of a new nuclear missile known as "Satan II", which carries a dozen warheads and could be used to strike enemies around the world.

The "superheavy" 200-tonne intercontinental ballistic missile was a "present to Nato", according to the Kremlin, and would make Moscow's enemies "think twice".

It carries a dozen warheads and could be used to strike enemies around the world. Vladimir Putin last night boasted that he had unleashed the first successful test of a new nuclear missile known as "Satan II". The 200-ton intercontinental ballistic missile was "a present to Nato", according to the Kremlin, and would make Moscow's enemies "think twice".

The missile, officially known as Sarmat, was launched from Plesetsk and delivered training warheads to a test range 3,725 miles away in Russia's far east.

The missile is believed to have a range of about 11,000 miles and can deliver between 10 and 15 nuclear warheads at hypersonic speeds. US, UK and Canada Walk Out of G20 Meeting Over War in Ukraine...

Sources say US Treasury secretary and BoE governor among those to leave as Russian delegates spoke...

BBC 21 Apr 2022

The UK, US and Canada have staged a coordinated walkout of a G20 meeting in protest against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, amid growing risks of division between leading nations hitting the world economy.

Representatives from the three countries left the session as Russian delegates spoke at the meeting in Washington. Sources said the governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey, and a senior Treasury official were among those to leave the talks.

The walkout at the session, which was taking place on the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund’s spring meetings, came amid growing fears that a breakdown in international relations would severely undermine the global economy’s recovery from the pandemic and add to soaring inflation, pushing millions more people into poverty worldwide.

In comments made shortly before the protest, the head of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, warned 75 years of development gains were being put at risk by a splintering of international cooperation.

Asked about reports of a potential walkout at the G20 meeting, Georgieva said the world had reached a “watershed moment” for global partnerships to tackle a range of issues including the pandemic, war in Ukraine, the climate emergency and rising poverty.

“There are clearly very, very unsettling facts we have to deal with. I can say honestly I never thought that I would live through another war in Europe on the scale this one takes place,” she said.

“We also recognise how interdependent we are. Just make the list of questions – no country can solve [them] on its own. It is so obvious that cooperation must and will continue.”

The walkout came as western leaders challenged Russia’s membership of the G20 group of leading economies, which includes the US, UK, France and Germany, as well as powerful developing countries including China, Brazil and India.

The chancellor, Rishi Sunak, tweeted that UK representatives had walked out of the meeting. “We are united in our condemnation of Russia’s war against Ukraine and will push for stronger international coordination to punish Russia,” he said.

Sources said the UK, US and other western nations were pushing for a consensus position on Russia’s continued membership of the G20 and had questioned the attendance of Kremlin representatives.

The US Treasury secretary, Janet Yellen, told attendees she disapproved of a senior Russian official’s presence, according to Reuters.

The US Treasury said earlier on Wednesday that Yellen met with Sri Mulyani Indrawati, the finance minister of Indonesia – which currently holds the rotating presidency of the G20 – to emphasise that there would “be no business-as-usual for Russia in the global economy”.

Russia Failing in Its War Aims, Antony Blinken Says

BBC News 25 APR 2022

RUSSIA has been rocked by huge explosions and a massive fire following a suspected strike by Ukraine.

The blaze erupted at the Druzhba oil depot in Bryansk with flames seen across the entire city.

Massive explosions also rang out and locals were evacuated from their homes close to the inferno.

The oil depot is likely to be vital for supplying Russia’s troops as they attempt to take control of the Donbas.

Ukraine has previously been accused of staging attacks on Russian soil to disrupt Putin's campaign.

Kyiv has however denied carrying out strikes.

And it's been warned Moscow may be attempting to use staged attacks on their soil as false flags to justify escalating the war in Ukraine.

Russia Warns of Immediate Proportional Response if Britain Continues its Direct Provocation of Ukraine...

British PM Boris Johnson in central Kyiv with Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky...

Russia’s defence ministry warned of an immediate “proportional response” to the UK after it said it would be legitimate for Ukraine to strike targets on Russian soil.

The Russian ministry warned that its troops were ready to launch strikes at decision-making centres in Kyiv, where some western military advisers are known to be present.

“We would like to underline that London’s direct provocation of the Kyiv regime into such actions, if such actions are carried out, will immediately lead to our proportional response,” the statement by the ministry said.

“As we have warned, the Russian Armed Forces are in round-the-clock readiness to launch retaliatory strikes with high-precision long-range weapons at decision-making centres in Kyiv,” it added.

The statement added that it would not necessarily be a problem if some representatives of certain western countries were in Kyiv if Russian strikes were carried out.

Russia’s stern remarks were directed towards London after the UK’s armed forces minister James Heappey said it would be “entirely legitimate” to strike targets in Russia for disrupting the country’s logistics and supply lines....

Poland Says it Will Manage Without Russian Gas

Poland has said it "will manage" after what it says are Russian threats to cut gas supplies to the country.

Poland and Bulgaria said Russian energy firm Gazprom told them it would stop supplying gas to "unfriendly" countries that refuse to pay in roubles.

Data from the European Union network of gas transmission operators shows that Poland's supply was briefly cut on Wednesday, but has since been resumed.

Early on Wednesday Bulgaria said gas continued to flow for the time being.

Both countries have refused to pay in roubles - the Russian currency - as demanded by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Polish state gas company PGNiG said it had been told all gas deliveries would be halted from 08:00 CET (06:00 GMT). The Bulgarian Energy Ministry also said it had been informed deliveries would be suspended from Wednesday.

PGNiG bought 53% of its gas imports from Gazprom in the first quarter of this year, but Warsaw says it can get gas from other sources.

It described the suspension as a breach of contract, adding that the company would take steps to reinstate the gas supply.

Bulgaria, which relies on Gazprom for more than 90% of its gas supply, also said it had taken steps to find alternative sources but no restrictions on gas consumption were currently required.

The country's energy ministry said Bulgaria had fulfilled its obligations under the current contract with Gazprom and made all required payments.

It added that the new payment system proposed by Russia was in breach of the existing contract.

Germany rules out immediate ban on Russian oil

Following the news, Poland's climate ministry said the country's energy supplies were secure.

Climate Minister Anna Moskwa said there was no need to draw gas from reserves and gas to customers would not be cut.

Poland's Deputy Foreign Minister, Marcin Przydacz, said his country had been preparing for the possibility Russia might limit gas exports by diversifying its supplies.

"I'm pretty sure that we will manage to handle this," he told the BBC.

He added that the suspension proved Moscow was "not a reliable partner in any kind of business" and urged other European nations like Germany to support a ban on Russian energy imports.

Poland was already planning to stop importing Russian gas by the end of the year, when its long-term supply contract with Gazprom expires.

PGNiG said its underground gas storage was almost 80% full and, with summer approaching, demand was lower.

Poland also has alternative supply sources, including a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Swinoujscie.

On 1 May, a new gas pipeline connection with Lithuania is also due to open that will give Poland access to gas from Lithuania's LNG terminal.

And a new pipeline delivering gas from Norway, known as the "Baltic Pipe", comes online in October. It should reach full capacity by the end of the year and could replace all Russian deliveries.

Putin Forced into Humiliating Apology After Minister Claims Hitler was Jewish

Daily Mirror 7 MAY 2022;

Vladimir Putin was forced into a humiliating apology after his foreign minister claimed Adolf Hitler had Jewish origins, it has been claimed.

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Hitler was part-Jewish

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said on Thursday that the Russian leader had apologised for Sergey Lavrov's unsubstantiated comments about the Nazi dictator.

Germany's Third Reich oversaw the murder of six million Jews during the 1930s and 40s, mainly in concentration camps like Auschwitz.

Bennett said he shared a phone call with Putin, in which the despot also claimed he would allow civilian passage from the besieged Azovstal Steelworks in the Ukrainian port of Mariupol.

This would be done via a humanitarian corridor handled by the United Nations and Red Cross.

Bennett's office said Israel's Prime Minister requested civilian passage from the Steelworks after an earlier conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Israel lambasted Lavrov this week for saying Hitler had Jewish roots, describing the remarks as an "unforgivable" falsehood that debased the horrors of the Nazi Holocaust.

Lavrov made the comment on Sunday when asked why Russia said it needed to "denazify" Ukraine if Zelensky was himself Jewish

"When they say 'what sort of nazification is this if we are Jews', well I think that Hitler also had Jewish origins, so it means nothing," Lavrov told Italy's Rete 4 channel, speaking through an Italian interpreter.

After the call with Putin, Bennett said he had accepted the apology and thanked the Russian leader for "clarifying his regard for the Jewish people and the memory of the Holocaust".

Israel, which has sought to keep good ties with Kyiv and Moscow, has acted as an intermediary, although an Israeli official said Bennett had suspended those efforts in late March to deal with a spate of Arab street attacks in Israel.

The latest phone calls with Putin and Zelensky suggested Israel may be resuming mediation efforts.

Putin's invasion of Ukraine has seen him compared multiple times to Hitler.

Mayor of besieged city Mariupol said reports alleging that civilians were being moved to Russian labour camps as "the logic of Nazi Germany".

Vadym Boychenko said such events being repeated in the 21st century were "hard to imagine".

The Guardian UK 9 MAY 2022

The attack of Ukraine ‘corrupts the memory of past sacrifices and Russia’s once-proud global reputation’, says Ben Wallace. UK Defence Secretary

Vladimir Putin and his inner political circle are “mirroring the fascism” of the Nazis through the invasion of Ukraine, the UK defence secretary will say on Monday morning ahead of the Kremlin’s annual military parade.

Ben Wallace is also expected to accuse President Putin of hijacking the annual commemoration of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany – and to say the country’s senior politicians and generals are complicit.

“Through their invasion of Ukraine, Putin, his inner circle and generals are now mirroring the fascism and tyranny of 70 years ago, repeating the errors of last century’s totalitarian regimes,” Wallace will say in a speech at the National Army Museum in London.

“Their unprovoked and illegal invasion of Ukraine, attacks against innocent citizens and their homes, and the widespread atrocities – including deliberately against women and children – corrupts the memory of past sacrifices and Russia’s once-proud global reputation.”

Soldiers and tanks not fighting in Ukraine will parade through Moscow and other Russian cities on Monday for the annual Victory Day parades, events that have taken on an increasing importance during Putin’s 20 years in charge.

But Wallace is expected to say that it is the presence of army generals that is particularly inappropriate, because they allow the Kremlin to make a false equivalence between the anti-fascist struggle of the second world war and the unprovoked attack on democratic Ukraine.

“Let’s call out the absurdity of Russian generals – resplendent in their manicured parade uniforms and weighed down by their many medals – for being utterly complicit in Putin’s hijacking of their forebears’ proud history of defending against a ruthless invasion; of repelling fascism; of sacrificing themselves for a higher purpose,” the defence secretary is expected to say.

Professional soldiers should also be appalled at the behaviour of Russia’s army, Wallace will add. Moscow’s forces have been accused of repeatedly bombing civilians, while failing to achieve the military objectives that had been set.

“Not only are they engaged in an illegal invasion and war crimes, but their top brass have failed their own rank and file to the extent they should be court-martialled,” he will say.

Russia’s military has become bogged down in Ukraine after more than two months fighting, including an aborted attempt to capture the capital Kyiv, and are trying to mass forces in the east to make territorial gains in attritional fighting in the Donbas region.

Sixty Killed in Russian Airstrike on Ukraine School

Emergency services personnel after school building was hit by Russian bomb.

Sixty people have been killed after a village school in eastern Ukraine took a direct hit in a Russian air raid, with rescue attempts said by the regional governor to be impossible due to constant shelling.

Russian attacks in the east and south intensified at the weekend ahead of Monday’s symbolic Victory Day celebrations, with the Black Sea city of Odesa coming under repeated missile strikes and the remaining Ukrainian fighters in the Azovstal steelworks in the besieged port city of Mariupol staging a press conference on Sunday saying they had been “abandoned” by the government as Russian attacks continued

About 90 people had been using the school in Bilohorivka, a village 60 miles (97km) north-west of the Russian-controlled city of Luhansk, as a shelter after the previous place of refuge, a clubhouse, had been destroyed in an earlier attack.

“As a result of a Russian strike on Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region, about 60 people were killed, civilians, who simply hid at the school, sheltering from shelling,” the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said in his nightly video address on Sunday.

Serhiy Gaidai, the Luhansk governor, told the Guardian he believed the 30 people who escaped had been outside in the grounds of the building. He said he had little hope for those who were under rubble.

BOMB-Sniffing Dog Receives HERO Award From President Zelensky

Pint-sized Patron the Jack Russell has been formally recognised by President Volodoymyr Zelensky with a military honour, after uncovering more than 200 explosives since the Ukraine invasion began

Daily Mirror 11 MAY 2022

A tiny Jack Russell has been given a medal for bravery after sniffing out more than 200 landmines in Ukraine.

Patron, whose name translates to 'bullet' in Ukrainian, was formally recognised by President Volodoymyr Zelensky with a military honour on Sunday.

The announcement was made during a news conference in Kyiv with Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau.

Mr Zelensky said: "Today, I want to award those Ukrainian heroes who are already clearing our land of mines.

"And together with our heroes, a wonderful little sapper – Patron – who helps not only to neutralize explosives, but also to teach our children the necessary safety rules in areas where there is a mine threat.

As Patron and his owner Myhailo Iliev were presented with their medals, the Canadian leader patted his pockets pretending to look for treats.

Pint-sized Patron couldn't have been prouder to receive his award and responded with barks and a wagging tail.

The two-year-old Jack Russell has become something of a national hero and a symbol of Ukraine's resistance against Russia.

He has inspired numerous artworks and viral social media posts across the country, from illustrations to soft toy replicas.

Since the Russian invasion began in February, the four-legged hero has saved countless lives by detecting hidden landmines across woodlands in Ukraine.

And up until he received his reward, Patron did it all in exchange for slices of cheese and belly rubs.

The country's foreign ministry said on Twitter : "Patron is a service dog in Chernihiv. He has discovered over 150 explosive devices in Ukraine since the full-scale Russian invasion began.

Ukraine Prosecutors Ready to Launch First War Crimes Trials of Russia Conflict

Exclusive: Russian soldier who allegedly killed man before raping his wife to be among first to face trial

Vadim Shysimarin, a 21-year-old commander of the Kantemirovskaya Tank Division, who is currently in Ukrainian custody, is expected to be the first to face trial over his alleged murder of a 68-year-old man.

Three Russian prisoners of war accused of targeting or murdering civilians, and a soldier who allegedly killed a man before raping his wife, are set to be in the dock in the first war crimes trials of the Ukraine conflict, the Ukrainian prosecutor general has revealed.

More than 10,700 crimes have been registered since the war began by the office of Ukraine’s prosecutor general, led by Iryna Venediktova, and a handful of cases have now been filed or are ready to be submitted in what marks a watershed moment two months into the war

It is alleged Shysimarin, a sergeant, had been fighting in the Sumy region in north-east Ukraine when he killed a civilian on 28 February in the village of Chupakhivka. He is accused of driving a stolen car with four other soldiers as he sought to flee Ukrainian fighters and then shooting dead the unarmed man on a bicycle as he was talking on his phone. He was ordered “to kill a civilian so he would not report them to Ukrainian defenders”, according to prosecutors.

The crime is said to have happened close to the victim’s house and was committed using an AK-74. The case has this week been filed at a criminal court. “He is here [in Ukraine], we have him,” said Venediktova, speaking from her heavily fortified headquarters in Kyiv.

Vadim Shysimarin, a 21-year-old commander of the Kantemirovskaya Tank Division, who is currently in Ukrainian custody, is expected to be the first to face trial over his alleged murder of a 68-year-old man.

A spokesperson added: “Prosecutors and investigators of the SBU [Ukrainian secret services] have collected enough evidence of his involvement in violation of the laws and customs of war combined with premeditated murder. For these actions, he faces 10 to 15 years in prison or life in prison.”

Separately, on 24 February, the day Vladimir Putin’s “special military operation”was launched, it is alleged two Russian soldiers using a Soviet truck-mounted 122mm multiple rocket launcher carried out artillery shelling of homes and civilian buildings in the village of Kozacha Lopan in Kharkiv district. They also allegedly hit an “educational institution” in the city of Dergachiv, from Belgorod in Russia.

The soldiers later crossed over the border of Ukraine and continued shelling targets in the Kharkiv region, it is claimed, but they were taken prisoner by Ukrainian forces and now await trial. Their case file, laying out charges of breaking the laws and customs of war, has also been filed at a criminal procedural court in Ukraine, but names and photographs are yet to be issued.

In a final case that is probably heading to a trial in absentia, a soldier named as Mikhail Romanov, who has a large tattoo of a bear on his chest, is accused of breaking into a house in March in a village in the Brovarsky region, murdering a man and then repeatedly raping his wife while “threatening her and her underage child with violence and weapons”. A second soldier also raped the 33-year-old woman, who has a four-year-old son.

The case is yet to be filed at court but the prosecutor’s office was able to provide a photograph from social media that has been used by the victim to identify the man who allegedly attacked her. Romanov’s apparent partner was contacted for comment by this newspaper but she did not respond to questions.

Of Romanov, Venediktova said: “Now we don’t know where he is – maybe he is fighting still, maybe he is on rotation in the Russian federation, maybe he is dead. We don’t know but we want to prosecute him in absentia.” She added: “We want to demonstrate to these criminals that we will find them. And we will prevent the deaths of other people in other territories.”

Venediktova, who on Monday travelled to the border with Poland to meet the UK attorney general, Suella Braverman, who has provided her with a former international criminal court judge as an adviser, said 36 identified war crimes suspects were currently being prosecuted, with various levels of progress.

Venediktova, whose office desk has a dozen hotlines, including one to Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said she feared many more crimes would emerge from the territories in the east and south of Ukraine currently occupied by Russia, including the devastated port city of Mariupol.

Venediktova, who keeps a Russian cluster bomb casing that was found in Kherson, a city in south Ukraine, on her desk, said countless atrocities were being committed.

She said: “I have a theory that the Russian federation decided that when they come to Ukraine everyone will be happy to see them but when they understood that the whole population was fighting against them, against a common enemy, they decided to do everything to scare the population.”

At the end of March videos emerged of alleged war crimes committed by Ukrainian soldiers against Russian prisoners of war, including a film that appeared to show three soldiers being shot in the legs. Venediktova said her office was continuing to investigate those claims and others.

She said: “We shall not act as barbarians but as people who understand the rule of law. We are still investigating but as I understand some of the facts could be fake. [But] there is not only one case where we started investigations, we have several.”

‘They Were Furious’: More Russian Soldiers & Officers Refuse To Fight as Bodies of Dead Russian Soldiers PILE UP in Ukraine

Russian Soldier's Dad Says 'Sh*t In Your Hat,' Put It On Commander's Head

13 May 2022 Guardian News

When the soldiers of an elite Russian army brigade were told in early April to prepare for a second deployment to Ukraine, fear broke out among the ranks.

The unit, stationed in Russia’s far east during peacetime, first entered Ukraine from Belarus when the war started at the end of February and saw bitter combat with Ukrainian forces.

“It soon became clear that not everyone was onboard with it. Many of us simply did not want to go back,” said Dmitri, a member of the unit who asked not to be identified with his real name. “I want to return to my family – and not in a casket.”

Along with eight others, Dmitri told his commanders that he refused to rejoin the invasion. “They were furious. But they eventually calmed down because there wasn’t much they could do,” he said.

He was soon transferred to Belgorod, a Russian city close to the border with Ukraine, where he has been stationed since. “I have served for five years in the army. My contract ends in June. I will serve my remaining time and then I am out of here,” he said. “I have nothing to be ashamed of. We aren’t officially in a state of war, so they could not force me to go.”

Dmitri’s refusal to fight highlights some of the military difficulties the Russian army has faced as a result of the Kremlin’s political decision not to formally declare war on Ukraine – preferring instead to describe the invasion, which will soon reach its fourth month, as a “special military operation”.

Under Russian military rules, troops who refuse to fight in Ukraine can face dismissal but cannot be prosecuted, said Mikhail Benyash, a lawyer who has been advising soldiers who choose that option.

Benyash said “hundreds and hundreds” of soldiers had been in touch with his team for advice on how they could avoid being sent to fight. Among them were 12 national guardsmen from Russia’s southern city of Krasnodar who were fired after refusing to go to Ukraine.

“Commanders try to threaten their soldiers with prison time if they dissent, but we tell the soldiers that they can simply say no,” Benyash said, adding that he was not aware of any criminal cases against soldiers who refused to fight. “There are no legal grounds to start a criminal case if a soldier refuses to fight while on Russian territory.”

Many soldiers, therefore, have chosen to be fired or transferred rather than going into “the meat grinder”, he said.

A similar account to Dmitri’s was given to the BBC’s Russian service by Sergey Bokov, a 23-year-old soldier who at the end of April decided to leave the army after fighting in Ukraine. “Our commanders didn’t even argue with us because we were not the first ones to leave,” Bokov said.

Pointing to Russia’s military laws, Benyash said it would be more difficult for soldiers to refuse to fight if Russia were to declare a full-scale war. “During wartime, rules are totally different. Refusal then would mean much harsher penalties. They would be looking at time in prison.”

While the exact number of soldiers refusing to fight remains unclear, such stories illustrate what military experts and western governments say is one of Russia’s biggest obstacles in Ukraine: a severe shortage of infantry soldiers.

Moscow initially put about 80% of its main ground combat forces – 150,000 men – into the war in February, according to western officials. But significant damage has been done to that army, which has confronted logistical problems, poor morale and an underestimated Ukrainian resistance.

“Putin needs to make a decision regarding mobilisation in the coming weeks,” said Rob Lee, a military analyst. “Russia lacks sufficient ground units with contract soldiers for a sustainable rotation. The troops are getting exhausted – they won’t be able to keep this up for a long period.”

Lee said one option for the Kremlin would be to authorise the deployment of conscript units to Ukraine, despite Putin’s earlier pledges that Russia would not use any conscripts in the war. “Conscripts could fill some of the gaps, but they will be poorly trained. Many of the units that are supposed to train conscripts are fighting themselves,” Lee said.

But without conscript battalions, Russia could soon “struggle to hold the territory it currently controls in Ukraine, especially as Ukraine receives better equipment from Nato,” he said.

Russian authorities quietly stepped up their efforts to recruit new soldiers as it became clear that a quick victory in Ukraine was unattainable.

An investigation by the BBC’s Russian service showed that Russia’s defence ministry filled employment websites with vacancies, offering people with no combat experience opportunities to join the army on lucrative short-term contracts. Some large government-run companies have received letters urging them to sign up their staff for the army.

Russia has also turned to mercenaries to bolster its war efforts, deploying fighters from the shadowy Kremlin-linked Wagner group.

But analysts say voluntary recruits and mercenary groups are unlikely to lead to a substantial increase in the number of new soldiers, compared with the numbers that a partial or a full-scale mobilisation would bring.

Despite speculation beforehand, Putin did not formally declare war on Ukraine during his Victory Day speech on 9 May.

Andrei Kolesnikov, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment, said the authorities may be worried that a general mobilisation would antagonise large sections of the population that support the “special operation”.

Russians “might be in favour of the conflict, but they don’t actually want to fight,” he said, adding that a general mobilisation would entail “colossal losses of untrained soldiers”.

And while the current status of the conflict gives Russian soldiers a legal path to refuse participation, some soldiers have complained that it has also led to them not being adequately cared for.

A junior sergeant said he was injured during one of the recent Ukrainian attacks on the Russian border territory where he was stationed. His superiors argued that he should not be given the monetary compensation of up to Ł2,500 that wounded Russians are entitled to by law because his injury took place on Russian soil – meaning it did not fall under the rules of Russia’s “special military operation”.

“It is unfair, I am fighting in this war just as the others in Ukraine, risking my life,” the soldier said. “If I don’t get the compensation that I am entitled to soon, I will go public and make a major issue of it.”

Russian Military Dog Switches Sides After Ukrainian Soldiers Saved His Life

Max the Russian special forces dog has swapped sides after Vladimir Putin's troops left him starving and abandoned in the line of fire - now he has a new role sniffing out unexploded mines for Ukrainian soldiers

Daily Mirror 24 MAY 2022

Max is being trained to help Ukrainian troops ....
.

War Dog

He now sniffs out unexploded mines in Ukraine

A special forces dog who was trained to fight for Russia has swapped sides after Vladimir Putin's troops abandoned him in an awful state.

Three-year-old Max was found starving and close to death by Ukrainian soldiers, who nursed him back to health and trained him to understand their commands.

The Belgian Malinois is now sniffing out unexploded mines alongside soldiers fighting for their country.

A member of the National Guard of Ukraine, named Dmitry, told Daily Star : "From now on, Max will serve on the right side, defending Ukraine and nibbling Russian asses."

He is intelligent and already loyal to his new soldiers

His comrade added: "Max has become a real favourite with the guards. We can't understand why the Russians would leave behind such as lovely animal.

"Ukrainians love dogs, they regard them as part of the family."

Max belonged to Kremlin troops who had captured a village in the Mykolaiv region close to the Black Sea.

The young dog was found wearing a camouflage collar issued by Russians to their military hounds.

Max was rescued from the front line after being abandoned

Max was left homeless but survived by eating rotting food he found on the front line.

A British special forces soldier (SAS) in Ukraine added:

"Malinois are the same breed used by the SAS and the SBS. They are brave, highly intelligent and athletic animals.

"They are tremendously loyal but Max has obviously been *convinced that the Ukrainians are now his new masters.

"I'm very surprised that one of these animals was actually *abandoned by the Russians because they are a highly-prized asset.

"Also the bond between a dog and its handler is very strong. It would be like leaving a member of your family behind."

Smoke rises after an airstrike on the Cultural Centre, as Russia's attack on Ukraine continues

Max is not the only pooch working immensely hard to protect Ukrainians.

Patron the Jack Russell has been awarded a medal for his bravery after sniffing out more than 200 landmines in Ukraine.

The tiny dog was formally recognised by President Volodoymyr Zelensky with a military honour earlier this month.

Patron was awarded a medal for his life-saving work

The announcement was made during a news conference in Kyiv with Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau.

Mr Zelensky said: "Today, I want to award those Ukrainian heroes who are already clearing our land of mines.

"And together with our heroes, a wonderful little sapper – Patron – who helps not only to neutralize explosives, but also to teach our children the necessary safety rules in areas where there is a mine threat."

Bomb Dog

President Zelensky called the bomb-sniffing dog a 'hero'

The two-year-old pup has become something of a national hero and a symbol of Ukraine's resistance against Russia.

He was dubbed a "good boy" by Ukraine's State of Emergency Services (SES) for helping pyrotechnicians in the Chernihiv region clear the area of "Russian gifts".

And up until he received his reward, Patron did it all in exchange for slices of cheese and belly rubs.

Ukraine WAR: Eurovision Trophy Sold to Buy Drones For Ukraine

Kalush Orchestra, the Ukrainian band which won this year's Eurovision Song Contest, have sold their trophy for $900,000 (Ł712,000; €838,000) to raise money for the war in Ukraine.

BBC News 30 MAY 2022

The crystal microphone was auctioned on Facebook, with the aim of buying drones for Ukraine's military.

The sale coincided with the band's appearance at a charity concert at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate.

It aimed to raise money for medical care and supplies.

Speaking at the concert, band member Oleh Psiuk appealed for people not to get used to the war, which has left at least 4,031 civilians dead and 4,735 injured, according to the UN, along with an unknown number of combatants.

It has also forced more than 14 million people to flee their homes since Russia invaded on 24 February, with towns and cities reduced to rubble.

"I think it should be on the front pages always, until peace comes," said Psiuk, whose Eurovision win had been hotly tipped in the run up to the contest. Their song, Stefania, was originally written in tribute to Psiuk's mother, but emotive lyrics like "I will always walk to you by broken roads" have been re-interpreted as a rallying cry.

Ukrainian TV presenter Serhiy Prytula announced that the money raised from the sale of the trophy would be used to purchase three Ukrainian-made PD-2 drones, Reuters news agency reports.

Drones are used heavily by Ukrainian and Russian forces, both as weapons and reconnaissance aircraft.

Ukraine stormed into the lead following huge public support

Update re: Ukraine Needs Many More Rocket Launchers From UK & US

Ukraine WAR: US to Send Longer-Range Rockets

The US will send Ukraine more advanced rocket systems to help it defend itself, President Biden has announced.

BBC News 1 JUN 2022.

A White House official said the weapons would include medium-range High Mobility Artillery Rocket System

The weapons, long requested by Ukraine, are to help it strike enemy forces more precisely from a longer distance.

Until now, the US had refused the request out of fear the weapons could be used against targets in Russia.

Moscow said it viewed the latest US weapons package to Ukraine including the new systems "extremely negatively".

Separately, the German government has promised to send an air defence system to Ukraine.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz told MPs that the IRIS-T system was the most modern Germany possessed and would enable Ukraine to defend an entire city against Russian air attacks.

He added that he would provide tracking radar capable of detecting enemy artillery, and multiple rocket launchers.

Balancing Act

On Wednesday, Mr Biden said the lethal aid would strengthen Kyiv's negotiating position against Russia and make a diplomatic solution more likely.

Writing in the New York Times, he said: "That is why I've decided that we will provide the Ukrainians with more advanced rocket systems and munitions that will enable them to more precisely strike key targets on the battlefield in Ukraine."

This is a fine balancing act for Mr Biden, as providing more powerful weapons could provoke a reaction from Russia, risking direct conflict between the US and its Nato allies and Moscow.

New weaponry will include the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), a senior White House official said - although he did not specify how many of them would be supplied.

The systems can launch multiple precision-guided missiles at targets as far as 70km (45 miles) away - far further than the artillery that Ukraine currently has. They are also believed to be more accurate than their Russian equivalents.

Game-changer for Donbas?

Analysis box by Pauli Adams, diplomatic correspondent

This announcement has been
a long time coming and represents one of the most significant military commitments so far.

As they face overwhelming Russian firepower in a grinding, attritional battle for the Donbas, Ukrainian forces complain that they lack firepower.

The HIMARS could change that.

Its GPS-guided rockets are much more accurate than the equivalent Russian systems. It's also much quicker to reload and, as the name suggests, the launch vehicles can move quickly from one location to another.

US and Ukrainian officials will already be having detailed conversations about how and where to use the HIMARS when they arrive.

Ukraine will be looking to hit targets well beyond its current reach - command and control centres, logistics hubs, and the Russian batteries that have Ukrainian troops pinned down in the Donbas.
line

Last month, Ukraine's army chief said that getting the HIMARS units would be "crucial" in allowing it to counter Russian missile attacks.

The US expects Ukraine to deploy the weapons in the eastern Donbas region, where the fighting is most intense, and where they can be used to strike Russian artillery units and forces targeting Ukrainian towns.

White House officials agreed to provide the rockets, they said, only after gaining assurances from President Volodomyr Zelensky that the weapons would not be used to attack targets inside Russia.

"We are not going to send to Ukraine rocket systems that can strike into Russia," Mr Biden wrote on Wednesday.

Mr Zelensky confirmed this in an interview for US network Newsmax.

"We're not interested in what is happening in Russia," he said. "We're only interested in our own territory in Ukraine."

But Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov did not appear to accept these limitations.

"We view this extremely negatively, because attempts to present the decision as containing elements of 'self-restraint' are useless," he said, quoted by Ria news agency.

"It is obvious that the US, at the head of a group of countries, is pumping weapons directly to the Kyiv regime. And the juggling and manipulation of some particular aspects of what is happening do not change the overall picture for us."

Pro-Russian 'DPR' forces fire a rocket targeting Ukrainian positions in Yasynuvata, Donetsk

The latest rockets will be the centrepiece of a $700m (Ł556m) support package for Ukraine that will be formally unveiled on Wednesday, White House officials said.

Helicopters, anti-tank weapons, tactical vehicles and spare parts are to be included in what will be the 11th package of military aid approved by the US for Ukraine since the invasion began in February.

In Wednesday's article, Mr Biden wrote that the US's goal was simply to see a "democratic, independent, sovereign" Ukraine, not to oust Mr Putin from his role as Russian president or to seek broader conflict with Moscow.

He blamed Russia's continued aggression for the stalling of peace efforts, adding that the US would never put pressure on Ukraine to concede any of its territory in return for an end to the conflict.

Directly addressing the risk of nuclear weapons being used in Ukraine, Mr Biden said "we currently see no indication" of this being Russia's intention - but warned that doing so would be unacceptable and bring with it "severe consequences".

Soon after Mr Biden's piece was published, Russian military officials announced that the country's nuclear forces were holding drills in Ivanovo province near Moscow, Interfax news agency reported.

Britain Defies Putins’ Warning; Sends M270 MLRS to Ukraine in Defence Against Russia

The UK is sending its first long-range missiles to Ukraine, the defence secretary has said, despite a threat from Russia to the West.

BBC News 6 JUN 2022

Ben Wallace said the M270 multiple-launch rocket system will help Ukraine defend itself against Russia.

The government has not confirmed how many weapons will be sent, but the BBC understands it will be three initially.

The decision comes after the US announced last week it was also supplying a rocket system.

The move by the US to send its own M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) has already angered Moscow and on Sunday Russian President Vladimir Putin threatened to expand the list of targets Russia will attack in Ukraine in response.

The UK government said the Ukrainian military will get training in the UK on how to use the launchers.

The multiple-launch rocket system can fire 12 surface-to-surface missiles within a minute and can strike targets within 50 miles (80km) with pinpoint accuracy - far further than the artillery Ukraine currently possesses.

Mr Wallace said the UK was taking a leading role in supplying Ukrainian troops with the "vital weapons they need to defend their country from unprovoked invasion".

He said: "As Russia's tactics change, so must our support to Ukraine.

"These highly capable multiple-launch rocket systems will enable our Ukrainian friends to better protect themselves against the brutal use of long-range artillery, which Putin's forces have used indiscriminately to flatten cities."

The UK and US have led the way in supplying weapons to Ukraine, but giving it advanced long range rockets marks a significant shift, said the BBC's defence correspondent Jonathan Beale.

It is also a recognition that Ukraine is struggling to compete against Russia's vast artillery arsenal, he added.

Last week, Washington said it would supply four HIMARS multiple rocket launchers to Ukraine - following receipt of guarantees they would be used for defensive purposes only and not to strike targets inside Russia. The same restriction applies to the use of the UK's M270 system.

In an interview on Russian state TV on Sunday, Mr Putin said: "In general, all this fuss about additional arms supplies, in my opinion, has only one goal - to drag out the armed conflict as long as possible."

The Russian leader said that if missiles with longer ranges did arrive in Ukraine, his country would "draw appropriate conclusions" and "strike at those targets that we are not striking yet".

The warning came as explosions shook parts of Kyiv on Sunday in the first assault on the capital city for weeks, while fierce fighting for control of key towns and cities in the eastern Donbas region continues.

Russia refocused its military efforts on the Donbas at the end of March after pulling back from the Kyiv region.

Some of the fiercest fighting is currently in the eastern city of Severodonetsk. Capturing the city would deliver the Luhansk region to Russian forces and their local separatist allies, who also control much of neighbouring Donetsk. The two regions form the heavily industrial Donbas.

On Sunday, Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, said he had visited front-line troops in the eastern Donbas region to the city of Lysychansk and the town of Soledar.

The UK has also delivered more than 5,000 next generation light anti-tank weapons - known as Nlaw - which analysts believe have been critical to Ukraine driving back Russian ground assaults since the war began.

Other weapon systems delivered by the government include short-range Brimstone 1 missiles, Mastiff armoured vehicles and Starstreak missile air defence systems - with the overall military support to Ukraine costing Ł750m so far, the government said.

Several other countries have pledged to send advanced weapons to Ukraine. Germany has promised to send its most modern air defence system - the Iris-T - to enable Ukraine to shield an entire city from Russian air attacks.

Support for war crimes investigation

Meanwhile, a specialist team of lawyers and police officers will be offered to assist the chief prosecutor investigating alleged Russian war crimes in Ukraine, the Justice Secretary Dominic Raab announced on Monday.

The offer will include a Metropolitan Police officer stationed in the International Criminal Court in The Hague, in the Netherlands - who will provide the ICC's prosecutor Karim Khan with greater access to British police and military expertise.

Seven lawyers experienced in international criminal law will be offered to help uncover evidence of war crimes committed in Ukraine and prosecute those responsible.

The ICC has already begun an investigation that may target senior Russian officials thought to be responsible for war crimes, crimes against humanity or genocide.

Update re: Russian & Syrian Airforces Hold Joint Air Strike Drills

Ukraine Needs Many More Rocket Launchers From West, Says Adviser

UK and US have so far promised a handful; official says with 60 they can stop Russians ‘dead in their tracks’

The Guardian UK 7 JUN 2022

Ukraine needs 60 multiple rocket launchers – many more than the handful promised so far by the UK and US – to have a chance of defeating Russia, according to an aide to the country’s presidency.

Oleksiy Arestovych, a military adviser to the president’s chief of staff, told the Guardian that while he believed the rocket launchers were “a gamechanger weapon”, not enough had been committed to turn the tide in the war.

“The fewer we get, the worse our situation will be. Our troops will continue to die and we will continue to lose ground,” Arestovych said, particularly if countries with dozens of systems only “decide to donate four or five”.
An M270 MLRS heavy rocket launcher participates in the LIST 22 live-fire Lightning Strike military exercises at the Rovajärvi training grounds on May 23, 2022 near Rovaniemi, Finland.

On Monday Britain said it would donate a handful of M270 tracked rocket launchers, carrying missiles with a range of about 50 miles, a few days after the US said it would donate four similar truck-based high mobility artillery rocket systems (Himars).

Arestovych said Ukraine needed many times more multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), which have a range far greater than anything in the country’s existing arsenal.

“If we get 60 of these systems then the Russians will lose all ability to advance anywhere, they will be stopped dead in their tracks. If we get 40 they will advance, albeit very slowly with heavy casualties; with 20 they will continue to advance with higher casualties than now,” he said.

The US army has 363 Himars and 225 M270 rocket launchers, and the US Marines have a further 47, according to the International Institute for Strategic Studies, while the UK has 35 of its version of the M270s – indicating there could be capacity to supply more to Ukraine.

Russia has repeatedly said it will intensify its offensive in Ukraine if the longer-range rockets are delivered.

Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister, said on Monday: “The longer the range of weapons you supply, the farther away the line from where neo-Nazis [the Ukrainians] could threaten the Russian Federation will be pushed.”

On Sunday Vladimir Putin said Moscow would strike “fresh targets” in Ukraine if the west stepped up its weapons deliveries. Early on Sunday morning Russia launched a cruise missile strike on a railway depot in an eastern suburb of Kyiv, the first time the capital had been struck in more than five weeks.

The latest public lobbying from Ukraine came as a battle for control raged in the small eastern city of Sievierodonetsk, with Kyiv’s forces trying to mount a counterattack after Russia nearly succeeded in capturing it at the end of last week.

Serhiy Haidai, the governor of Luhansk, where the city is situated, said on Monday morning that “the situation has worsened a little for us”, having reached a point where Ukrainian forces had “liberated almost half of the city”.

Later on Monday Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, struck a more pessimistic note, telling journalists in Kyiv that while his country’s forces were holding out, “there are more of them [Russians] and they are stronger”. Ukraine’s military losses have been estimated by insiders at 150 deaths a day and 800 wounded.

Haidai said shelling had increased tenfold in Sievierodonetsk and neighbouring Lysychansk, still held by Ukraine, and there were other reports of intense fighting involving machine gun, mortar and artillery fire and thousands of troops.

Overnight it emerged that Zelenskiy had visited nearby frontlines on Sunday to raise soldiers’ morale. The president revealed he had taken a risky trip to Lysychansk and nearby Soledar that at one point took him a couple of kilometres from Russian positions.

“We also brought you something from them,” Zelenskiy added in a selfie video released in the small hours. “It is important. We brought confidence. And strength. I wish them health. Low bow to their parents. I wish victory to all of us.”

Arestovych said Zelenskiy had wanted to “display support for the troops” because the fighting in the Donbas area was “pretty hard for us”. The president also wanted to repel “Russian disinformation” that he “sits in his bunker in Kyiv and couldn’t care less about the frontline”.

Ukrainian strategists said they had tried to lure Russian forces into overextending themselves in Sievierodonetsk, in the hope of blunting the operational effectiveness of the invading force. Although 120 Russian battalions remain inside Ukraine, Kyiv believes they are operating at 40% or 50% strength at present.

Russia, however, has been making slow but steady progress in the Donbas region, advancing at a rate of about 500 metres to 1km a day in recent weeks, largely by concentrating its efforts on an increasingly small portion of the frontline: in the area around Sievierodonetsk, where there is a bulge in Ukraine’s positions.

Arestovych said Ukraine’s principal problem was that while it was able to inflict casualties on the Russians and blunt their advances in the Donbas and across a 800-mile (1,300km) frontline, it was far more difficult to push back the occupiers. Militaries typically need to secure a 3:1 battlefield advantage or more to have a prospect of victory.

“We need four to five brigades of heavy weaponry to be able to conduct a proper counter-offensive and to make it successful. We have the manpower, we don’t have the armaments,” Arestovych said. “To be on an offensive is about five times harder than being on the defensive.”

The adviser said his greatest fear was that the west would stop sending weapons to Ukraine, “because that will be going back to the original situation prior to the war, of long and static frontlines, this time three times more of our land having been captured than before”.

Elsewhere, Russia’s defence ministry said its forces had killed more than 450 “nationalists” in Horlivka and Kodema, north of Donetsk, and destroyed parts of an armoured vehicle repair facility in the Kharkiv region. There was no word on the reported deaths from the Ukrainian side.

In Russia, the governor of the Kursk region, Roman Starovoit, said the village of Tyotkino, near the border with Ukraine, had come under fire from the Ukrainian side that had targeted a bridge and some businesses on Monday morning.

Russian and Syrian Airforces Hold Joint Air Strike Drills

RUSSIAN and Syrian air forces hold joint air strike simulation drills across Syria, according to the Russian defence ministry.

7 Jun 2022 The Sun

The defence ministry said Russian Su-24m, Su-34 and Su-35s aircraft took part in the drills. Syrian aircraft included MIG-23ml and MIG-29 fighters.

The joint exercises took place at three Syrian airbases - Khmeimim, Seikal and Dumayr airfields outside Damascus, Izvestia reported.

Russian forces have been present in Syria since 2015 when they helped turn the tide in a civil war in favour of President Bashar al-Assad.

Ukraine: Man Arrested at UK Airport on Suspicion of Spying For Vladimir Putin

The man in his 40s was detained at London's Gatwick Airport on Monday under the Official Secrets Act reportedly on suspicion of spying for Vladimir Putin and remains in police custody

Daily Mirror 15 JUN 2022

A man was arrested in the UK on suspicion of spying for Vladimir Putin, it has been been reported.

The man in his 40s was detained at London's Gatwick Airport on Monday under the Official Secrets Act and remains in police custody.

Met Police confirmed he had been detained under section 1 of the act - which refers to spying and sabotage "useful to an enemy state".

A source told The Sun: "The suspect is believed to have been in the UK spying on behalf of the Putin regime.

"He was kept under observation and arrested as he arrived at Gatwick to try and fly out of the country."
Met Police confirmed he had been detained under section 1 of the act - which refers to spying and sabotage "useful to an enemy state".

A Met Police spokesperson told the Mirror: "We can confirm that officers from the Met's Counter Terrorism Command arrested a man in his 40s at Gatwick airport on Monday 13 June on suspicion of offences under section 1 of the Official Secrets Act 1911.

"He has been taken to a London police station, where he currently remains in police custody."

It comes after Russia has warned that Europe will be wiped off the map if Western nations provide nuclear-capable missiles to Ukraine.

The threat comes after Poland's former foreign minister suggested that those allied against Russian aggression in Ukraine may have legal grounds to provide the deadly weapons.

The man in his 40s was reportedly arrested for spying for Vladimir Putin's regime

Radoslaw Sikorski claimed that Vladamir Putin had violated the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances of 1994 and therefore that Western nations could justifiably provide the missiles in order to "give Ukraine the opportunity to defend its independence".

Following Ukraine's declaration of independence in the wake of the fall of the Soviet Union, the government agreed to destroy its nuclear arsenal and join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). Despite Russia joining the NPT at the time, Mr Sikorski said Putin had broken the terms of the agreement with the invasion of Ukraine.

Russia struck back at Mr Sikorski's comments with venom. Viacheslav Volodin, the Head of the State Duma wrote on his Telegram account that Poland - along with the rest of Europe - would "cease to exist" if Russia is threatened.

Former Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski

He said: "With such deputies, the Europeans will have much more serious problems than those they have already faced today (refugees, record inflation, energy crisis).

"Sikorski is provoking a nuclear conflict in the centre of Europe. He doesn’t think neither about the future of Ukraine nor about the future of Poland.

"In case his suggestions are fulfilled, these countries will cease to exist, as will Europe as well.

"Sikorski and the like are the reason why Ukraine must not only be set free from the NAZI ideology but also be demilitarized, securing the nuclear-weapon-free status of the country."

Lavrov: Russia is NOT Squeaky Clean and Not Ashamed -Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov Fact-Checked

Russias' Foreign Minister Tells The BBC That The West is Pressing UN Officials to Amplify Fake News.

Russian TV Claims UK Fighters in Ukraine Will be Executed With British Guns and Bullets

BBC News 17 JUN 2022.

Mr Lavrov spoke to the BBC's Russia Editor Steve Rosenberg

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has made several claims about the war in Ukraine in an interview with the BBC.

We've fact-checked some of them.

'Dragging Ukraine into Nato was a criminal act'

Ukraine is not a member of Nato and, although it has expressed a wish to join, there is no timeframe for this.

Mr Lavrov said Russia invaded Ukraine to stop the West "dragging" Ukraine into the military alliance.

If Ukraine were to become a member of Nato, the alliance would be obliged to defend it from attacks by Russia or other adversaries.

Nato hasn't deployed any combat troops to Ukraine, but co-operation has deepened since 2014.

Nato members have supported Ukraine with equipment and training following the annexation of Crimea by Russia and foreign military trainers have had a presence in the country.

In March, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said: "It is clear that Ukraine is not a member of Nato; we understand this."

Nato Forces

Nato troops have been taking part in exercises in the Baltic states such as Estonia
Nato has deployed more forces to some member states in eastern Europe in recent years.

It says its deployments in eastern Europe after 2014 - four battle groups in the Baltic states and Poland - amounted to 5,000 troops.

"Before Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea, there were no allied troops in the eastern part of the [Nato] alliance."

It also says that further Nato military activity in eastern Europe has been in response to Russia's own build up near Ukraine, which went on for many weeks before it invaded in late February.

At one point, the Russian forces were estimated to be anything between 100,000 and 190,000 strong.

'We didn't invade Ukraine, we declared a special military operation'

On 24 February, Russian forces began a full-scale attack on neighbouring Ukraine, targeting locations across the country.

The BBC and other news organisations have consistently described this act as an invasion.

In early March, Russia passed a law under which publishing "false information" about what the Russian army is doing is punishable by up to 15 years in jail.

In practice, this means punishment for reporting anything that challenges the Kremlin's narrative on its campaign in Ukraine.

Media outlets in Russia are banned from calling it a "war" or an "invasion". The required official terminology being a "special military operation".

TV Protest

An anti-war protester who interrupted the news on Russian state TV was arrested and fined

'According to international law, mercenaries are not recognised as combatants'

The laws of war laid out in the Geneva Conventions grant "combatant immunity" to prisoners of war.

Mercenaries (foreign fighters not part of a regular army, hired to undertake military operations) are not covered by this legal protection.

Mr Lavrov was talking about two British men who were sentenced to death by a Russian proxy court in eastern Ukraine, accused of being mercenaries.

Both men have lived in Ukraine since 2018. Their families say they've been long-serving members of the Ukrainian military and therefore should be protected.

Foreign nationals who are members of another country's armed forces have rights as prisoners of war if captured.

Russia tells BBC “we did not invade Ukraine” and there is “no war” there

Breaking News Re: UK Fighters To Be Executed With British Guns + American Fighters Missing in Ukrai

BREAKING NEWS

Three American Fighters Reported Missing in Ukraine

The US Department of State says it is aware of reports that three American fighters are missing in Ukraine, with two of them feared captured.

BBC News 17 JUN 2022.

Andy Tai Ngoc Huynh (left) and Alexander Drueke

Two military veterans who were fighting for Ukraine were named in reports this week as having been taken prisoner.

The state department said on Thursday: "There are reports of one additional American whose whereabouts are unknown."

Last week, three foreign prisoners were condemned to death for helping Ukraine.

Two British men and one Moroccan man were sentenced by a Russian-backed separatist court in Donetsk to be executed by firing squad.

The White House said on Thursday it is "working very hard to learn more" about the unverified reports of missing or captured Americans in Ukraine.

A group of former US and French servicemen tweeted on Wednesday that two Americans fighting with them had been captured a week ago.

If the report was confirmed, these would be the first Americans fighting for Ukraine captured since the war began in February.

According to US media, Andy Tai Ngoc Huynh, 27, and Alexander Drueke, 39, had travelled from Alabama to join a Ukrainian volunteer unit.

Alabama congressman Robert Aderholt released a statement on Wednesday saying Mr Huynh, a former US Marine, had "volunteered to go fight with the Ukrainian Army in their current war against Russia".

He added that Mr Huynh's family had not been in contact with him since 8 June 2022 when he was in the Kharkiv area.

The state department said it was looking into claims that Russian or Russian-backed separatist forces in Ukraine had captured two Americans.

But spokesman Ned Price told reporters on Thursday the US "has not raised this yet with the Russian Federation" because Washington does not yet have "credible reason" to believe the Russians have captured the men.

Mr Drueke's mother, Bunny, told CBS News that the family has not received confirmation that he has been captured. However, a post by Russian forces on social media claimed that two Americans had been captured on the same day that they went missing.

"As a mother, you want to keep your children safe," she said. "As an American, I am so darn proud of him for being willing to risk his safety to help democracy around the world."

Mr Huynh's fiancée, Joy Black, said her partner "just had such a burden on his heart to go and help these people in need".

The Kremlin has said it is not aware of the reports of the captured Americans. Russia considers all foreigners fighting with Ukraine to be mercenaries, and says they are not protected as combatants under the Geneva Convention.

"According to international law, mercenaries are not recognised as combatants," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in a rare interview with BBC News on Thursday.

In a tweet, Illinois congressman Adam Kinzinger argued that the men "have enlisted in the Ukrainian army, and thus are afforded legal combatant protections".

The state department continues to warn Americans against travelling to Ukraine because of the conflict with Russia.

NB:
Lets hope that now America STOPS their constant TALK TALK TALK of MONETARY AID & SHOWS ACTION by sending some SF UNDERGROUND to HELP as Britains' SAS has done since the start of this WAR

HISTORY repeats itself, They never got involved in WW2 until CHURCHILL finally convinced them to do so...

By then MILLIONS had died...NOT only Jews

Europe Told to Prepare For Russia Turning Off Gas

European Countries Say They Have Received Less Russian Gas Than expected Recently

The head of the International Energy Agency has warned that Russia may stop supplying gas to Europe this winter.

BBC News 23 JUN 2022.

Fatih Birol says he believes a complete shutdown is not the most likely scenario but that Europe needs to work on contingency plans just in case.

In recent weeks, several European countries said they received significantly less Russian gas than they expected.

Russian officials deny it's deliberate and have blamed technical issues.

Before the invasion of Ukraine, Europe imported about 40% of its natural gas from Russia but that figure has now fallen to about 20%.

'Strategic' Reductions

Mr Birol says he believes that recent Russian reductions in gas supply are "strategic". The falls are making it harder for European countries to fill up their gas storage and increasing Russia's leverage this winter.

"I wouldn't rule out Russia continuing to find different issues here and there, and continuing to find excuses to further reduce gas deliveries to Europe and maybe even cut it off completely," Mr Birol told BBC News.

Last week the flow of natural gas through Nord Stream 1, one of the main pipelines from Russia to Europe, was just 40% of capacity. Many experts are sceptical of the Russian explanation that this was caused by "technical issues".

Across Europe, shortfalls in gas supply continue to be reported. On Friday the Italian firm energy firm Eni said that it had only received half of the gas that it was expecting from the Russian state-controlled gas giant Gazprom, while Slovakia and Austria have also reported falls.

France says it has received no Russian gas from Germany since 15 June while Poland, Bulgaria, Finland, Denmark and the Netherlands have had their Russian gas deliveries suspended after they refused a demand to pay in Russian roubles.

Oil Pipelines

Last month European countries agreed to try to protect themselves from the volatility of gas prices by filling up their storage facilities. They jointly committed to reaching at least 80% capacity by November, with the latest data suggesting they are at about 55%.

Mr Birol said the ongoing gas crisis now justified emergency short-term measures to reduce demand, such as increasing the use of coal-fired power stations, and if possible prolonging the life of nuclear power plants. If there was a complete shutdown of Russian gas supply, he says drastic measures may be needed.

"I don't exclude the possibility that Europe will need a planned and orderly rationing of gas," Mr Birol says.

"I don't say this is the base scenario, but looking at the last several months, if not several years, the experiences we have had with Russia as an energy partner, this is a scenario we cannot afford to exclude for the time being."

Inside The British & US Elite Extraction Group Rescuing Civilians From Ukraine's Most Dangerous Warzones

British & US Veterans Form Group to Extract Ukrainians Stuck in Unsafe Areas
.....

Racing through the dust as fast as their vehicles could take, Andy Milburn, a British former US Marine Colonel, and his team of military veterans knew they could be seen by Russian drones or spotters on the surrounding slag heaps, but had decided their humanitarian mission was worth the gamble.

“We wanted to get in from behind the town so we were masked from Russian artillery, but the Russians have every surface road dialled in [registered], so very quickly within seconds they can bring rounds down on vehicles travelling on it,” he said.

The Telegraph UK 26 JUN 2022.

Marine Colonel Andy Milburn, British Founder of the Mozart Group

The potholed dirt road in and out of the besieged Ukrainian town of Novoluhanske last week was impossible to cross without the risk of being struck by heavy artillery fire, but there was no other escape route for terrified residents trapped in their basements for months.

As the convoy bounced towards the town, shells pounded craters in the fields on either side.

“It seemed to be what we call harassment and interdiction rounds – one round every minute or so. Those are worrying because you never know where the next one is going to land, and it looked like a couple were phosphorous,” said Mr Milburn.

Anything could go wrong, but the rescuers forged on. They had been told of a group of civilians, including children, under bombardment less than a mile from the Russian frontline and in desperate need of extraction.

“You’ve got to press the ‘I believe’ button. because otherwise you can second-guess yourself to death,” Mr Millburn said. “We didn’t know these people but it’s trust tactics and you take sensible precautions.”

His team of special operations veterans are volunteers with the Mozart Group – running daily evacuations from Ukraine’s war-torn Donbas region and riding in small, unarmed convoys into conflict hotspots that few would dare to enter.

They navigate the current hell-scape of the Donbas confident in their military expertise from decades of experience in armed forces around the world, but with the full knowledge of the extreme risks.

The Mozart Group, which has 20-30 volunteers in its ranks, was founded by Milburn, who was commander of a combined special operations task force in Iraq to counter ISIS, and a former commanding officer of the Marine Raider Regiment. He originally hails from Lymington, Hampshire UK

He said the group’s members were drawn together by a “sense of purpose” and “moral clarity” that was missing in the Iraq and Afghan wars. “Here we are definitely on the side of right,” he said.

Funded by donations, the group also trains the Ukrainian forces and conducts mine clearances but does not engage in fighting.

Novoluhanske in Donetsk lies on the cusp of territory occupied by Russian forces as they slowly advance across the eastern Luhansk and Donetsk regions to occupy Donbas.

NATO Leaders Voice Concern About Threat China/Moscow Pose to World Order For First Time

NATO poised to harden position on China as support for Russia deepens distrust

Beijing’s efforts to build up nuclear forces, hacking operations and increasingly close ties to Moscow are ‘serious challenges’, says Nato secretary general

The Guardian UK 30 JUN 2022

Nato leaders voice concern about threat China poses to world order for first time

Beijing’s efforts to build up nuclear forces, hacking operations and increasingly close ties to Moscow are ‘serious challenges’, says Nato secretary general

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV shows the launch of the Fujian, Beijing’s new aircraft carrier in June 2022.

China is not an adversary but it does represent serious challenges, Jens Stoltenberg, Nato’s secretary general, said on Wednesday, as the alliance agreed for the first time to include threats posed by Beijing into a blueprint guiding its future strategy.

While Russia’s war against Ukraine has dominated discussions at the Nato summit, China earned a place among the western alliance’s most worrying security concerns.

“We now face an era of strategic competition … China is substantially building up its forces, including in nuclear weapons, bullying its neighbours, including Taiwan,” Stoltenberg said. “China is not our adversary but we must be clear-eyed about the serious challenges it represents.”

The alliance’s last blueprint – or strategic concept – was agreed to in 2010 and did not mention China. The new one states that China’s policies challenge Nato’s interests, security and values, though Russia remains the most significant and direct threat to security.

“The PRC’s [People’s Republic of China] malicious hybrid and cyber operations and its confrontational rhetoric and disinformation target allies and harm alliance security,” the strategic concept reads, noting a deepening partnership with Russia in their shared attempts to “subvert the rules-based international order, including in the space, cyber and maritime domains”.

Nato warned that the Chinese government was “rapidly expanding” its nuclear capability without increasing transparency or engaging in good faith in arms control, and using economic leverage to “create strategic dependencies and enhance its influence”.

US secretary of state Antony Blinken accused Beijing of undermining the rules-based order “that we believe in, that we helped build”. “If China’s challenging it in one way or another, we will stand up to that,” he said.

The Australian prime minister, Anthony Albanese, attending his first Nato summit in Madrid, warned that the strengthening of relations between Beijing and Moscow posed a risk to all democratic nations.

“Just as Russia seeks to recreate a Russian or Soviet empire, the Chinese government is seeking friends, whether it be … through economic support to build up alliances to undermine what has historically been the western alliance in places like the Indo-Pacific,” he told the summit on Wednesday.

Albanese said Australia had been subjected to “economic coercion” from China, and urged democratic leaders to pursue trade diversification.

Australia, South Korea, Japan and New Zealand were invited to the Madrid summit to add a greater focus on the Indo-Pacific region. Albanese’s objective was to elevate the region as a second theatre of strategic competition with Nato members preoccupied with Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine.

Addressing her first Nato summit, New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern warned of a “more assertive” China but urged more diplomatic engagement. New Zealand has toughened its tone recently amid Beijing’s growing presence in the South Pacific, in part due to the signing of a security pact between China and Solomon Islands.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian responded by saying Nato should stop “trying to launch a new cold war”.

“Stop trying to mess up Asia and the world after messing up Europe,” he said. “What they should do is give up their cold war mindset, zero-sum games and stop doing things that create enemies.”

Japan’s prime minister, Fumio Kishida, said the invasion of Ukraine had shaken the foundation of the rules-based order. “The security of Europe and the security of the Indo-Pacific cannot be decoupled,” he said in opening remarks.

En route to the summit, UK prime minister Boris Johnson said the Russian invasion of Ukraine had shown the need for extra vigilance and caution over potential Chinese action against Taiwan.

“I just think it’s very important that countries around the world should not be able to read across from events in Europe and draw the conclusion that the world will simply stand idly by if boundaries are changed by force,” he said. “That’s one of the most important lessons that we pick up from Ukraine.”

UK foreign secretary, Liz Truss, was more explicit, calling for faster action to help Taiwan with defensive weapons, a key requirement for Ukraine since the invasion.

“There’s always a tendency – and we’ve seen this prior to the Ukraine war – there’s always a tendency of wishful thinking, to hope that more bad things won’t happen and to wait until it’s too late,” Truss told the UK’s foreign affairs committee.

“We should have done things earlier, we should have been supplying the defensive weapons into Ukraine earlier. We need to learn that lesson for Taiwan. Every piece of equipment we have sent takes months of training, so the sooner we do it, the better.”

NATO Prepares For Dangerous New World - as Russia WARNS of New IRON Curtain

The Nato summit has been thick on unity and defiance.

2 JUL 2022 Channel 4 News

A message to President Putin, and President Xi of China, that this alliance is stronger than ever - and ready to defend itself and its values.

In a symbolic lift mentioned by both the Prime Minister and the American President - one of Ukraine's symbols of resilience, Snake Island in the Black Sea, has now been abandoned by Russia.

But this war is far from over. Its economic and military costs are bound to climb - and this summit has not given Ukraine enough heavy weapons ro win the war, only enough not to lose it in the near term.

UK Soldiers Captured by Russian Separatists

Two more Brits charged with being mercenaries in separatist-held east Ukraine -TASS

2 Jul 2022 Sky News Australia

Two MORE UK soldiers have been captured by Russian separatists in the Eastern Donbas region of Ukraine and are facing mercenary charges.

UK's foreign office said it condemns the exploitation of prisoners of war and is supporting the men's families.

Up to 100 foreign nationals have been taken prisoner in the Ukraine-Russia war so far.

LONDON (Reuters) -Two Britons have been charged with "mercenary activities" by investigators in a Russian-backed separatist-held territory in eastern Ukraine, the Russian state news agency TASS reported on Friday.

TASS cited a source in the power structures of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), recognised only by Russia and Syria, as saying criminal cases had been opened and charges filed against Dylan Healy and Andrew Hill under Article 430 of the DPR criminal code.

Sole Survivor of Russian Firing Squad Escaped Execution by Playing DEAD

BBC News 5 Jul 2022

Taxi driver and father of four, Ivan Skyba, was one of a group of Ukrainian men defending their suburban street near Kyiv at the start of the war.

He narrowly avoided death after being captured with his comrades by Russian soldiers as they advanced on Ukraine’s capital.

Along with eight of his fellow captives he was led to a courtyard where Russian soldiers opened fire in a cold-blooded execution. The other eight men were shot dead in an atrocity that prosecutors are treating as a war crime.

Somehow though, Ivan Skyba survived by playing dead.

Complete Cut-Up of Russian Gas EU in Disarray as 12 Countries Affected by Cut-Off

THE EUROPEAN Union scrambles to find alternative sources of gas as Vladimir Putin is turning off gas taps to 12 European countries.

BBC News 7 JUL 2022.

Europeans gearing up for a potentially catastrophic winter as Vladimir Putin has started to switch off the gas from flowing to a dozen of European countries.

In a further blow to Europe’s gas supplies, Russia is bound to temporarily shut down the Nord Stream 1 pipeline – the EU’s biggest piece of gas import infrastructure – from July 11 for annual maintenance.

Fear is now mounting about the possibility for Russia to continue to squeeze Europe's supply beyond the planned end of the maintenance works.
