US Strikes Iran-Backed Group in Syria After Deadly Attack on Coalition Base

A US contractor was killed when a suspected Iranian-made drone struck base in Syria’s north-east

Pentagon said air strikes were carried out in retaliation for drone attack on US-led coalition base that killed a US contractor, injured another, and wounded five US soldiers.

Although American forces stationed in Syria have been targeted by drones before, fatalities are extremely rare.

BBC 24 MAR 2023

The United States has carried out airstrikes on an Iran-backed group in Syria, after a US contractor was killed when a suspected Iranian-made drone attacked a coalition base in the country’s north-east.

Five US service members and one other US contractor were wounded in the attack on the coalition base on Thursday, the Pentagon said. Two of the wounded service members were treated on site, while three others and the injured contractor were transported to medical facilities in Iraq.

In a statement released later on Thursday, the US defence secretary, Lloyd Austin, said US Central Command forces retaliated against the attack with “precision airstrikes” against facilities in eastern Syria used by groups affiliated with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.

Shahed 136 Drones

Iran becoming global drone producer on back of Ukraine war, says US

The defence department said the intelligence community had determined the unmanned aerial vehicle used in the attack on the coalition base was of Iranian origin.

“The airstrikes were conducted in response to today’s attack as well as a series of recent attacks against coalition forces in Syria” by groups affiliated with the Revolutionary Guard, Austin said.

Overnight, videos on social media purported to show explosions in Syria’s Deir Ez-Zor, a strategic province that borders Iraq and contains oilfields.

Iran-backed militia groups and Syrian forces control the area, which has also been targeted by suspected airstrikes by Israel in recent months, allegedly aimed at hitting Iranian supply routes.

A UK based war monitor said that eight pro-Iran fighters were killed in the US strike on Thursday.

“US strikes targeted a weapons depots inside Deir Ezzor city, killing six pro-Iran fighters, and two other fighters were killed by strikes targeting the desert of Mayadine and near al-Boukamal,” the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, which answers only to the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been suspected of carrying out attacks with bomb-carrying drones across the wider Middle East.

There was no immediate reaction from Iran over the strikes, which come during the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. Iran’s mission to the United Nations did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

It is not the first time that the US under President Joe Biden has struck Syria due to tensions with Iran. In February and June 2021, as well as August 2022, Biden launched attacks there.

US forces entered Syria in 2015, backing local forces in their fight against the Islamic State group. The US still maintains a base near Hasakah in north-east Syria, where Thursday’s drone strike happened. There are roughly 900 US troops, and even more contractors, in Syria.

“As President Biden has made clear, we will take all necessary measures to defend our people and will always respond at a time and place of our choosing,” Austin said. “No group will strike our troops with impunity.”...

Movies Re: Iran Test Launched Ballistic Missile With Potential 2,000km Range

Iran Says It Has Successfully Test Launched Ballistic Missile

Iran successfully test-launched a ballistic missile with a potential 2,000-km range on Thursday, state media said, two days after the chief of Israel's armed forces raised the prospect of "action" against Tehran over its nuclear programme.

BBC 27 MAY 2023

Iran, which has one of the biggest missile programmes in the Middle East, says its weapons are capable of reaching the bases of arch-foes Israel and the United States in the region.

Despite U.S. and European opposition, the Islamic Republic has said it will further develop its "defensive" missile programme.

"Our message to Iran's enemies is that we will defend the country and its achievements. Our message to our friends is that we want to help regional stability," Iranian Defence Minister Mohammadreza Ashtiani said.

State TV broadcast a few seconds of footage of what it said was the launch of an upgraded version of Iran's Khoramshahr 4 ballistic missile with a range of 2,000 km (1,243 miles) and able to carry a 1,500-kg (3,300-pound) warhead.

The state news agency IRNA said the liquid-fuel missile had been named the "Kheibar", a reference to a Jewish castle overrun by Muslim warriors in the early days of Islam.

"The domestically built Kheibar missile's outstanding features include quick preparation and launch time, which makes it a tactical weapon in addition to a strategic one," it said.

U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said, "Iran's development and proliferation of ballistic missiles poses a serious threat to regional and international security and remains a significant non-proliferation challenge."

Iran was continuing to seek missile technology from foreign suppliers and conducting tests in defiance of a UN Security Council resolution, Miller told reporters at a regular press briefing, adding that Washington would continue to use tools including sanctions to counter those efforts.

Israel, which the Islamic Republic does not recognise, sees Iran as an existential threat. Iran says its ballistic missiles are an important deterrent and retaliatory force against the United States, Israel and other potential regional adversaries.

An Israeli military spokesperson said the military does not comment on such matters.

On Tuesday, the top Israeli general mooted possible military action against Iran as efforts by six world powers to revive Tehran's 2015 nuclear deal have stalled since last September, amid growing Western fears about Tehran's accelerating nuclear advances.

The deal, which Washington ditched in 2018 by Trump, had imposed curbs on Iran's nuclear activities that extended the time Tehran would need to produce enough fissile material for a nuclear bomb, if it chose to do so. Iran denies seeking nuclear weapons.

BREAKING: US Carries Out Airstrikes in Syria For Third Time...

US Strikes on Iran-Linked Sites in Syria in Response to "Iran-Affiliated Attacks" on US Personnel

BBC 13 NOV 2023

United States strikes two sites in Syria believed to be used by Iranian troops

The US says it is in response to "Iran-affiliated attacks" on US personnel in Syria and Iraq

The United States confirmed it conducted air strikes on two "Iran-affiliated" locations in Syria.

Lloyd Austin, the US Secretary of Defense, said it believes it targeted a training facility and a safe house in eastern Syria. It claims the two locations were being used by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Austin says the attack was in response to "continued attacks" against United States personnel in both Iraq and Syria. He said President Joe Biden was committed defending the USA.

It is the third time in less than three weeks the US has targeted locations in Syria. It claims the Iran-linked groups are behind a spike in attacks on US forces across the Middle East....

Putin Makes Rare Visit to The Middle East - Putin Pledges Closer Russia-Iran Ties After Rare Visit to Gulf

Putin & Saudi Crown Prince Discuss Middle East Peace and OPEC+ Strategies Amidst Oil Price Drop

Russian President Vladimir Putin said relations with the United Arab Emirates were at an all-time high during his first visit to the Middle East since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine nearly two years ago

AP 8 DEC 2023

President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raisi vowed to deepen ties on Thursday, a day after the Russian leader made a rare visit to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Putin, whose country is under a raft of US and European sanctions imposed over his February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, has built an increasingly close partnership with Iran, including in the military sphere. His talks in Riyadh and Abu Dhabi on Wednesday also demonstrated the Russian leader’s success in courting the oil-rich traditional US Gulf allies, who have been critical of Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza.

“Our relations are developing very well, please give my best regards to the Supreme Leader” of Iran, Putin said at the start of their talks in Moscow. “Thanks to his support, we have established a good trend in the last few years.”

Raisi railed at the “unjust global system,” condemning Israel’s war in Gaza, which began after Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack that killed about 1,200 people, as a “crime against humanity” backed by the US and other Western nations. Describing Russia as a friendly nation, he said his meeting with Putin will create new favorable conditions for cooperation.

As it pursues its attack on Ukraine, Russia is using Iranian-made drones and is building a factory that will manufacture unmanned aerial vehicles designed by Iran, according to the White House. Tehran in return is reportedly getting advanced fighter aircraft and missiles, electronics and air defense equipment.

Saudi Arabia in March re-established diplomatic ties with Iran in a deal brokered by China and has sought to bolster investment and defense ties with its rival as it works to prevent regional fallout from the Gaza conflict.

Tehran and Riyadh have long been at loggerheads including over the US military presence in the Middle East and Iran’s support for armed proxies hostile to Saudi interests across the region.

Movies Iran Tries Swedish EU Diplomat Accused of Spying For Israel & Corruption on Earth

Iran Accuses Swedish EU Diplomat of Crime That Carries The Death Penalty

EU Diplomat Held In Iran For Over 500 Days On Espionage Charges, Sweden Kept Arrest Under Wraps

Johan Floderus Faces Trial For Spying For Israel and Corruption on Earth, One of Irans’ Most Serious Offences

The Guardian 11 DEC 2023

Johan Floderus (centre) attends a court session in Tehran to hear the accusations against him.

Iran has accused a Swedish EU diplomat held in a Tehran prison for more than 600 days of spying for Israel and “corruption on Earth”, a crime that carries the death penalty.

“Johan Floderus is accused of extensive measures against the security of the country, extensive intelligence cooperation with the Zionist regime and corruption on Earth,” the judiciary’s Mizan Online news agency said on Sunday.

Floderus, 33, was arrested on 17 April 2022 at Tehran airport as he was returning to Iran from a trip with friends.

Evin Prison “Hell on Earth.”

The Swede, who works for the EU’s diplomatic service, is being held in Tehran’s NOTORIOUS Evin prison.

His arrest came while an Iranian national, Hamid Noury, was being tried in Sweden over the mass execution of dissidents in Tehran in 1988.

He ultimately received a life sentence in July 2022.

Noury has contested his sentence, and Sweden’s court of appeal is expected to announce its verdict on 19 December.

In a recent interview with the Guardian, Floderus’s father, Matts, said the family were on tenterhooks as they waited to learn of the charges.

“We have reason to believe the trial will come soon, that it will be in December,” he said. “He told us he didn’t care what the verdict would be because it would mean the same thing whatever they decided to charge him with. It is just theatre, just make-believe.

“We are deeply worried and say this over and over again. He has been arbitrarily detained. He has done nothing wrong and should be freed and allowed to leave the country.”

Mizan published photos of a handcuffed Floderus appearing before judges in a pale blue prison uniform as the charges were read. Corruption on Earth is one of Iran’s most serious offences and carries a maximum penalty of death.

The prosecution claimed Floderus had gathered information on Iran’s nuclear and enrichment programmes, carried out “subversive projects” for the benefit of Israel and established a network of “agents of the Swedish intelligence service”.

It further claimed he was involved in “intelligence cooperation and communication with the European Union” and the exiled People’s Mujahedin (MEK) opposition group, according to Mizan.

The date of the trial was not yet known.

The EU’s foreign affairs chief, Josep Borrell, called for his immediate release, saying: “There are absolutely no grounds for keeping Johan Floderus in detention.”

Sweden’s foreign minister, Tobias Billström said: “There is no basis whatsoever for keeping Johan Floderus in detention, let alone bringing him to trial.”

Iran HANGS Child Bride For Murdering Husband Despite UK Pressure

Samira Sabzian, who was forced to marry at 15 and was a victim of domestic abuse, was arrested a decade ago when she was 19

The Iranians Robbed of Their Sight in The Regimes' BRUTAL Crackdown on Dissent

The Guardian 21 DEC 2023

Samira Sabzian, who had been in prison for the past decade, was executed at dawn in Ghezel Hesar prison in the Tehran satellite city of Karaj, the Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR) group said.

Her execution comes as concern grows over the numbers of people this year executed by Iran, where hundreds of people have been hanged mainly on drugs and murder charges, including more than a dozen women.

IHR said Sabzian was a "child bride" who had married her husband at the age of 15 and had been a victim of domestic violence, according to relatives.

The Hengaw rights group also confirmed the execution of the woman, now believed to be in her late 20s or early 30s, saying that she was originally from the city of Khorramabad in the western Lorestan province.

Amnesty International said it was "horrified" by the reports of the "chilling execution", saying the mother of two was "subjected to a forced and early marriage as a child".

The office of the UN High Commissioner on Human Rights said it was "alarmed" by the execution, saying Sabzian had been forced to marry her husband while aged 15.

"We again urge Iran to establish a moratorium on all executions with a view to abolishing death penalty," it added.

The execution has so far not been reported by media inside Iran.

'Killing Machine'

Sabzian was arrested around a decade ago when she was aged 19 on charges of murdering her husband and then subsequently sentenced to death, IHR said.

She had two children who she had not seen after her arrest until a final meeting in prison earlier this month, IHR said.

"Samira was a victim of years of gender apartheid, child marriage and domestic violence, and today she fell victim to the incompetent and corrupt regime's killing machine," said IHR director Mahmood-Amiry Moghaddam.

Rights groups have raised alarm over a surge in executions in Iran this year, with at least 115 people put to death in November alone according to Amnesty International.

"The international community must urgently call on Iran's authorities to immediately establish an official moratorium on executions," Amnesty said.

The British government had called on Iran to spare Sabzian's life.

"Samira is a victim of child marriage... Iran must cease its appalling treatment of women and girls," junior foreign minister Tariq Ahmad said on X, formerly Twitter, late Tuesday.

According to IHR, 18 women have now been executed in Iran this year, including Samira Sabzian.

Rights groups have repeatedly said Iran's sharia-based murder laws -- based on a principle of "qesas" (retribution in kind) -- fail to take into account potentially mitigating factors such as abuse or domestic violence in such cases.

Iran has executed eight men in cases related to the protests that erupted in September 2022 but rights groups argue that the surge in hangings on all charges is aimed at instilling fear in the wider population.

According to IHR, Iran executed 582 people in 2022 but this year's total is expected to be significantly higher.

Default US vs Iran Terrorist Drone WAR After Attacks on US Airbases & Tanker off India

US Hits Iran-Backed Militias in Iraq After Attack

Iran-Backed Militia Attacks U.S. Military Bases In Iraq With Drones

Drone That Struck Tanker Off India Was Launched From Inside Iran, Says US

---A drone launched from Iran struck a chemical tanker in the Indian ocean, the US Department of Defense said.

BBC 27 DEC 2023

"The motor vessel CHEM PLUTO, a Liberia-flagged, Japanese-owned, and Netherlands-operated chemical tanker was struck at approximately 10 am local time (6 am GMT) today in the Indian Ocean, 200 nautical miles from the coast of India, by a one-way attack drone fired from Iran"

The US military has attacked Iranian-backed militant groups in Iraq, hours after US personnel were injured in a drone strike on a US airbase there.

The US defence chief said three sites used by Kataib Hezbollah and other groups were hit in response to attacks on US forces in Iraq and Syria.

The US strikes were condemned by Iraq as a "clear hostile act".

The US has repeatedly targeted sites linked to militant groups in Iraq and Syria in recent years.

Iraq says one person was killed and 18 others, including civilians, were injured in the US strikes.

Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin said the attacks, which he called "necessary and proportionate", had been authorised by President Joe Biden.

The drone strike on a US base in Irbil in Iraq's Kurdistan region injured three US military personnel, one critically, US National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said.

A militia collective called Islamic Resistance in Iraq, linked to Kataib Hezbollah, said it was behind the that attack.

The Irbil airbase had previously been hit by rocket attacks carried out by Iranian-linked militia. Kataib Hezbollah, which is financed and armed by Iran, has been one of the most prominent groups involved in attacks on US targets in Iraq. It forms part of the Hashd al Shaabi (Popular Mobilisation), an umbrella group of militia which has been integrated into the Iraqi armed forces.

Iraq is an ally of both the US and Iran, which are major foes of one another. The US has about 2,500 soldiers in Iraq at the invitation of the Iraqi government to prevent a resurgence there of the Islamic State (IS) group. There are about 900 US military personnel in north-east Syria, also to curb IS, though the Syrian government considers their presence illegal.

Meanwhile, US forces in the Red Sea said they had shot down 12 attack drones, three anti-ship missiles and two cruise missiles fired by Houthi rebels from Yemen on Sunday.

Fighter jets and naval vessels from the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group shot down the projectiles over a 10-hour period, the US military's Central Command said.

There was no damage to ships in the area or reported injuries, officials added.

Iran Turning Prisons Into Mass Killing Fields 853 Inmates Executed

Iran is turning prisons into "mass killing fields" after at least 853 prisoners were executed in 2023 following a new "war on drugs", a devastating new report from Amnesty International has revealed.

Human rights groups have expressed their concerns that authorities are using exeuctions as a way to instil fear throughout members of society

In the findings released on Thursday, Iranian authorities have "persisted with their state-sanctioned killing spree which has turned prisons into killing fields", human-rights group Armesty said. It is a staggering 48 percent increase on the previous year and 56 percent of the executions were drug-related, the report added.

It follows two recent reports from Iran Human Rights (IHR) and Together Against the Death Penalty (ECPM) which said a slightly lower figure of 834 prisoners were executed in 2023. The increase in executions comes after Iran was thrown into violent upheaval in September 2022 and nine people were executed in cases relating to protests.

Iranian authorities have "persisted with their state-sanctioned killing spree which has turned prisons into killing fields", Armesty revealed.

Human rights groups have expressed their concerns that authorities are using executions as a way to instill fear throughout members of society and prevent further protests. There have been at least 95 executions already recorded up to March 20, according to Amnesty, who said that its numbers were "minimum figures" and the real death toll would be higher.

The group said in its report: "Without a robust global response, Amnesty International fears that the Iranian authorities will continue using the death penalty as a tool of oppression to execute thousands more people in the coming years."

Adding: "Our shocking findings on the Iranian authorities’ ongoing assault on the right to life underscore the urgent need for the international community to press the Iranian authorities for an immediate moratorium on all executions", the report added.

Some of the people executed include 17-year-old Hamidreza Azari who was hanged in November last year in Razavi Khorasan after he was convicted following a deadly stabbing when he was just 16. However, his age "was misrepresented" as 18 by state media to "evade accountability," Amnesty said, adding that it had seen his birth certificate.

Meanwhile, the surge in a number of executions for drug offences was a concern for Amnesty. The group said Iran's anti-narcotics legislation was modified in 2017 and drug offences were on the slide in 2018 and 2020 before suddenly increasing last year.

Iran Vows to Make EVIL Israel Regret Deadly Embassy Missile Strike That Killed Top General

Irans' Supreme Leader has vowed to make "evil" Israel "regret" a missile strike on the Iranian embassy in Syria that killed one of his top generals.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called the air strikle a "crime

Mohammad Reza Zahedi was killed in the strike

In response to the death of Sardar Mohammad Reza Zahedi, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei declared: "We will make them regret this crime and others like it, by God's will. The evil regime will be punished by the hands of our brave men."

The Revolutionary Guard, Irans' elite military force, confirmed that seven of its members were killed in the airstrike on Irans' consulate in Damascus, Syria.

Syrian officials and state media have blamed Israel for the attack.

Oil and gold prices have eased after Iranian authorities appeared to downplay reports of an attack from Israel.

Brent crude, the international benchmark, fell after jumping briefly to over $90 a barrel after reports emerged of an attack.

Gold briefly came close to a record high before settling below $2,400 an ounce.

There are concerns a worsening conflict in the Middle East could disrupt oil supplies.

Investors have been closely watching Israel’s reaction to Iran's direct drone and missile attack last weekend.

Oil prices had jumped by as much as 3.5% initially. But Brent then fell back to roughly $87 a barrel after Iranian state media claimed that there was "no damage" in Isfahan province where there had been reports of explosions.

Sharp and sustained rises in oil prices risk fuelling inflation. Countries are heavily reliant on the commodity, which is used to produce fuels such as petrol and diesel.

Fuel and energy prices have been a major driver behind the higher cost of living worldwide in the past couple of years.

Randeep Somel, fund manager at M&G Investment Management, told the BBC's Today programme: "The concern for markets would mainly be the inflationary one, that this would actually add to inflation."

While the pace of inflation has been slowing, in the UK it is still above the Bank of England's 2% target and some economists have forecast that a cut to interest rates may not happen until summer or later on in the year.

"In the UK, the inflation rates is still around 3.2% - still someway off the target – and it is becoming a bit of a concern for policy makers," said Mr Somel.

"It is good to see that this hasn’t escalated any further and that hopefully the disruption to markets is short-lived.”

The price of Brent is far below the heights reached after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022 when a number of major economies imposed sanctions on the oil-producing nation.

Oil hit $125 a barrel in the weeks that followed, leading to a sustained period of higher household energy bills.

The gold price often rises at times of uncertainty as it is seen as a safe investment.

The heightened tension in the Middle East has led to concerns about whether shipping through the Strait of Hormuz between Oman and Iran will be affected.

It is a crucial shipping route, as about 20% of the world's total oil supply passes through it.

Members of the oil producers' cartel Opec - Saudi Arabia, Iran, the UAE, Kuwait and Iraq - send most of the oil they export through the strait.

Iran is the seventh largest oil producer in the world, according to the US Energy Information Administration, and the third-largest member of Opec.

The initial spike in oil prices was "a knee-jerk reaction to fears of a renewed escalation of warfare between Israel and Iran," said energy market expert Vandana Hari of Vanda Insights.

"What the latest events underscore is the heightened fragility and volatility in the Mid East situation," she added.

Stock markets were mixed as investors reacted to the latest events.

In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was roughly 0.5% higher in mid-day trade, while the S&P 500 fell 0.5% and the Nasdaq was down 1.3%.

In the UK, the FTSE 100 share index closed 0.2% higher while the FTSE 250 ended down 0.3%.

In Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 2.7%, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 0.9%.
