Hijacked at Sea: Yemens' Houthis Release Shocking Video of Cargo Ship

Houthis Release Video Showing Their Sunday Hijacking of Israeli-Linked Shipping Vessel in Red Sea

BBC 22 NOV 2023

The Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen release a video showing how the group hijacked an Israeli-linked shipping vessel in the Red Sea yesterday.

The footage shows a helicopter landing on the vehicle carrier named the Galaxy Leader, with several gunmen getting off and taking control of the ship.

Houthi gunmen can be seen holding the international crew at gunpoint in the video.

One of the Houthi operatives is also seen shouting the group’s slogan while walking through the ship: “God is the Greatest, Death to America, Death to Israel, Cursed be the Jews, Victory to Islam.”

The Bahaman-flagged vessel is registered under a British company, which is partially owned by Israeli tycoon Abraham Ungar, who goes by Rami.

The vessel was leased out to a Japanese company at the time of the hijacking.

The ship had been sailing from Turkey to India with an international civilian crew, without any Israelis aboard.

Missiles Fired Toward US Warship Responding to Attack on Commercial Tanker

Missiles Fired On US Navy Warship During Distress Response in Middle East

BBC 28 NOV 2023

The MASON — part of the Dwight D. Eisenhower carrier strike group President Biden ordered to the region in October

Two ballistic missiles were fired from Houthi-controlled parts of Yemen in the direction of a U.S. Navy warship as it responded to a distress call from a commercial tanker in the Gulf of Aden, the Pentagon said late Sunday.

The USS Mason, along with allied ships, responded to a distress call from the commercial vessel, the Central Park, which reported “that they were under attack by an unknown entity,” according to a statement from U.S. Central Command.

Upon arrival at the scene, the Mason and other ships demanded the release of the Central Park, after which five armed individuals debarked the vessel and attempted to flee via a small boat.

“The MASON pursued the attackers resulting in their eventual surrender,” the release states, noting that the crew of the Central Park is safe.

Additionally, two ballistic missiles were fired from Houthi-controlled parts of Yemen toward the general direction of the Mason and Central Park at 1:41 a.m. local time, but they landed in the Gulf of Aden approximately 10 nautical miles away from the ships, with no damage or injuries reported.

The incident is the latest in a long series of attacks on U.S. troops and assets in the Middle East since war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas began 7 Oct.

Washington has claimed Iran and the militant groups it backs are behind the attacks, which Tehran has denied.

On Tuesday, Iran-backed militias carried out an attack using a close-range ballistic missile against U.S. and coalition forces at the al-Asad air base in Iraq, resulting in several nonserious injuries and some minor damage to infrastructure, defense officials said.

And Thursday, the USS Thomas Hudner, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, shot down multiple “one-way attack drones” in the Red Sea. The drones had been launched from Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen, Central Command said.

Since 17 Oct. U.S. forces have been attacked at least 67 times in the region.

British and US Warships Shoot Down Suspected Attack Drones in Red Sea

From Australian wine, to Japanese cars and clothes from Bangladesh: Map shows supplies of goods under threat by Red Sea shipping attacks as experts warn impact of crisis on High Streets will be felt 'within days'

Daily Mail 20 DEC 2023

High streets could soon feel the impact of the Red Sea crisis, with vital imports of wine, tea, tobacco and other popular goods drying up 'within days', experts have warned.

Marco Forgione, director general of the Institute of Export and International Trade, said goods from countries including Bangladesh, Vietnam, Thailand, Japan and Australia will be hit by the shipping disruptions, as tankers seek to avoid the Red Sea.

It comes as the Iran-backed Houthi rebels continue to cause mayhem in the critical Middle Eastern shipping route, using missiles and drones to attack merchant vessels, as the terror group chilling vowed to turn the route into a 'graveyard'.

The relentless attacks by the Yemen-based group are in response to the Israel-Hamas war, with militants today insisting their relentless assaults 'will not stop... no matter the sacrifice it costs us'.

Mr Forgione warned the knock-on effects on consumers would start to be felt within days with supplies of essential items such as meat, clothes, shoes, Australian wine and electronic goods such as mobile phones, impacted.

He told MailOnline: 'The ripple effects of these shipping disruptions will become apparent to consumers within a matter of days.

Pirate re: Royal Navy Ship BLASTS Houthi Drones-UK & US Hint at More Serious Military Action

Who Are The Houthi Rebel PIRATES Attacking Red Sea Ships?

BBC News 24 DEC 2023

Global supply chains could face severe disruption as a result of the world's biggest shipping companies diverting journeys away from the Red Sea.

Attacks by Houthi rebels in Yemen on commercial vessels in recent weeks have resulted in many firms deciding to avoid one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.

The Houthi group has declared its support for Hamas and has said it is targeting ships travelling to Israel.

But who are the Houthis? What are their motivations? And what are their links to Iran? The BBC’s analysis editor Ros Atkins explains.

What Are The Consequences of Houthi Rebel Pirate Attacks in The Red Sea?

UK Ministers vow Houthi rebels will 'Bear The Consequences' of attacks on ships in the Red Sea in joint statement with leaders from 11 other countries

Comes as Experts WARN Terror Attacks Threaten to Create Shortages Across Globe

MailOnline 8 JAN 2024

The UK Government has signed a joint statement alongside leaders from New Zealand, Australia, Bahrain, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands and the United States calling for an end to the hostilities.

Since November, the Iranian-backed terror group has launched numerous attacks on shipping travelling towards the Suez Canal, causing widespread disruption in the major trade route.

The statement warns: 'We call for the immediate end of these illegal attacks... The Houthis will bear the responsibility of the consequences should they continue to threaten lives, the global economy, and free flow of commerce in the region's critical waterways.'

It comes as experts warn the terror attacks threaten to create shortages across the globe, drive up prices and even derail hopes of slashing interest rates.

Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, the world's biggest shipping companies, have stopped using the vital trading route, which gives access to the Suez Canal.

Instead, ships transporting goods from China are diverting around the Cape of Good Hope on the southern tip of Africa.

The journey, about 3,500 nautical miles longer, adds an average of nine days and around £800,000 to the cost of a shipment.

Some small UK traders report they have been quoted increases of as much as 250 per cent in shipping costs from China.

Victoria Scholar, of the online investment service Interactive Investor, warned: 'There are concerns the increased shipping costs could be passed on to consumers in terms of higher prices, fuelling a rebound in inflation of goods on shelves as well as supply chain disruptions, shortages and product delays.'

Meanwhile, reports suggest ministers are considering joint air strikes with US naval forces to ward off the rebels.

But a Houthi spokesman vowed yesterday to continue the attacks despite retaliation threats, saying: 'No US attack will pass without a response or punishment.'

Royal Navy Ship Shoots Down Houthi Drones in Red Sea Attack After UK Defence Secretary Grant Shapps Sends Houthi Rebels a Grave Warning

The Yemen militant group launched drone attack on British warship HMS Diamond in the Red Sea

British and US Warships Shoot Down MORE Missiles Fired by Houthi Rebels - UK and US Hint at Further More Serious Military Action After Largest Houthi Attack in Red Sea

Daily Mail 11 JAN 2024

British and American warships have shot down a huge wave of missiles and drones fired by Yemen's Houthi rebels after the militants' largest attack in the Red Sea to date. Dramatic pictures showed the moment the British Destroyer shot down the huge wave of missiles and drones fired by the Iranian-backed rebels.

HMS Diamond, a £1billion ($1.2billion) Type 45 destroyer known as the jewel of the Royal Navy, shot down the targets with a barrage of Sea Viper missiles - which travel three times the speed of sound. US fighter jets were also involved in the operation.

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps called the Houthi attack 'the largest to date' and said the UK had taken action to 'protect innocent lives and the global economy'. He said none of HMS Diamond's crew had been injured. The Houthis are an Iranian backed militia that has been pummelling merchant ships in the Red Sea for months, forcing a coalition of nations including the UK and USA to deploy warships to protect them.

The rebels say their assaults are aimed at stopping Israel's war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip. But their targets are increasingly random, raising the risk of a US retaliatory strike on Yemen. The attacks are disrupting maritime trade through the Suez canal - a crucial route linking Europe with Asia and the Middle East - leading to delays and price rises for consumers.

Mr Shapps said: 'Overnight, HMS Diamond, along with US warships, successfully repelled the largest attack from the Iranian-backed Houthis in the Red Sea to date. Deploying Sea Viper missiles and guns, Diamond destroyed multiple attack drones heading for her and commercial shipping in the area, with no injuries or damage sustained to Diamond or her crew.

The UK alongside allies have previously made clear that these illegal attacks are completely unacceptable and if continued the Houthis will bear the consequences. We will take the action needed to protect innocent lives and the global economy.'

US and UK Navies Repel Largest Houthi Attack

Carrier-based jets and warships shot down 21 drones and missiles launched by the Iran-backed group overnight.

The Houthis said they targeted a US ship in retaliation for the killing of rebels who tried to attack a container ship by using speedboats last month.

The RAF launched targeted strikes against Houthi military facilities in response to a series of attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea.

British and American forces rained bombs on Iran-backed rebels in Yemen last night using warships, fighter jets and submarines.

Rishi Sunak insisted the move was in 'self-defence' and said the UK will 'always stand up for freedom of navigation and the free flow of trade'.

President Biden also hailed the 'successful' blitz - which was aided by Australia, Bahrain, Canada and the Netherlands - and vowed more action if it was needed.

The Ministry of Defence said coalition forces identified key facilities involved in the rebels' targeting of HMS Diamond and US Navy vessels on Tuesday 'and agreed to conduct a carefully coordinated strike to reduce the Houthis' capability to violate international law in this manner'.

Explosions were heard in the capital Sana'a and other major cities including Hodeida and Saada shortly before midnight on an evening where tensions in the Middle East escalated drastically, with US officials admitting they were expecting a response from rebels.

More than a dozen sites were bombed by Western forces, in raids which included submarine-launched Tomahawk missiles and fighter jets.

The four RAF Typhoons used Paveway IV guided bombs to 'conduct precision strikes' on two targets that had been chosen to 'reduce the Houthis' capability to violate international law'. They were assisted by an RAF Voyager refuelling plane.

One of the targets was a launching site for reconnaissance and attack drones in Bani, north-western Yemen. Another was an airfield in Abbs in the same area of Yemen.

US defence secretary Lloyd Austin said the airstrikes also targeted sites associated with the Houthi's unmanned drone, ballistic and cruise missile, coastal radar and air surveillance capabilities.

Officials said the Houthi rebels, who have carried out a series of attacks in the Red Sea to disrupt shipping, had ignored a 'final warning' as Mr Sunak signed off on the raids during an emergency cabinet meeting last night.

Iran has been involved in 'every phase' of the Houthi attacks in recent months, a US official added.

The rebels' official media said the capital Sana'a, Hodeida and Saada were all targeted and blamed 'American aggression with British participation'.

Mr Sunak said in a statement: 'Despite the repeated warnings from the international community, the Houthis have continued to carry out attacks in the Red Sea, including against UK and US warships just this week.

'This cannot stand. The United Kingdom will always stand up for freedom of navigation and the free flow of trade.

'The Royal Navy continues to patrol the Red Sea as part of the multinational Operation Prosperity Guardian to deter further Houthi aggression, and we urge them to cease their attacks and take steps to de-escalate.'

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps added: 'The threat to innocent lives and global trade has become so great that this action was not only necessary, it was our duty to protect vessels & freedom of navigation.'

The coordinated military assault comes just a week after the White House and a host of partner nations issued a final warning to the Houthis to cease the campaign of drone and missile attacks on commercial ships, which has been in progress since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, or face potential military action.

The warning appeared to have had at least some short-lived impact, as attacks stopped for several days.

A high-ranking Houthi official, Ali al-Qahoum, vowed there would be retaliation.

'The battle will be bigger... and beyond the imagination and expectation of the Americans and the British,' he said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Al-Masirah, a Houthi-run satellite news channel, described strikes hitting the Al-Dailami Air Base north of Sanaa, the airport in the port city of the Hodeida, a camp east of Saada, the airport in the city of Taiz and an airport near Hajjah.

The Houthis did not immediately offer any damage or casualty information.

On Tuesday, the Houthi rebels fired their largest barrage of drones and missiles targeting shipping in the Red Sea, with US and British ships and American fighter jets responding by shooting down 18 drones, two cruise missiles and an anti-ship missile.

On Thursday, the Houthis fired an anti-ship ballistic missile into the Gulf of Aden, which was seen by a commercial ship but did not hit it.

Transit through the Red Sea, from the Suez Canal to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, is a crucial shipping lane for global commerce.

About 12% of the world's trade typically passes through the waterway that separates Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, including oil, natural gas, grain and everything from toys to electronics.

President Biden said last night: 'These strikes are in direct response to unprecedented Houthi attacks against international maritime vessels in the Red Sea—including the use of anti-ship ballistic missiles for the first time in history.

'The response of the international community to these reckless attacks has been united and resolute.

'Today's defensive action follows this extensive diplomatic campaign and Houthi rebels' escalating attacks against commercial vessels.

'These targeted strikes are a clear message that the United States and our partners will not tolerate attacks on our personnel or allow hostile actors to imperil freedom of navigation in one of the world's most critical commercial routes.

'I will not hesitate to direct further measures to protect our people and the free flow of international commerce as necessary.'

Explosions were reported in Sana'a, Hodeidah governorate, Saada, and Dhamar, Houthi officials confirmed. It's unclear the extent of the damage or any injuries.

Fighter jets, Navy destroyers, submarines and Tomahawk cruise missiles were all used in the blitz. Sites and airfield used to launch drones against ships were hit, according to officials.

At least one submarine was deployed, the US would not confirm exactly which one but Ohio-class guided-missile submarine USS Florida (SSGN-728) entered the Red Sea in November, USNI News reports. The vessel has capacity for 154 missiles.

Gulf of Oman Chaos as Oil Tanker Seized by 'Six Military Men' and all Contact With Ship Lost...

An oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman was boarded by "unauthorised" people in military uniforms early this morning and all contact with the ship was lost, an advisory group run by the British military and a private intelligence firm warned.

Suspicion immediately fell on Iran as the ship was once known as the Suez Rajan and had been involved in a yearlong dispute that ultimately saw the U.S. Justice Department seize 1 million barrels of Iranian crude oil on it.

The British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, which warns sailors in the Middle East of threats, described receiving a report from the ship's security manager of hearing “unknown voices over the phone” alongside the ship's captain. It said that further efforts to contact the ship had failed and that the men who boarded the vessel wore "black military-style uniforms with black masks."

The British group said the incident began early in the morning in waters between Oman and Iran in an area transited by ships coming in and out of the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf through which a fifth of all oil traded passes. The private intelligence firm Ambrey said that “six military men” boarded the ship, which it identified as the oil tanker St. Nikolas.

It said that the men had covered the surveillance cameras as they boarded. The St. Nikolas is associated with the Greek shipping company Empire Navigation. The Athens-based firm did not immediately respond to the Associated Press request for comment.

The apparent seizure also comes after weeks of attacks by Yemen's Iranian-backed Houthi rebels on shipping in the Red Sea, including their largest barrage ever of drones and missiles launched late Tuesday.

That has raised the risk of possible retaliatory strikes by U.S.-led forces now patrolling the vital waterway, especially after a United Nations Security Council vote on Wednesday condemning the Houthis and as American and British officials warned of potential consequences over the attacks.

In September, Empire Navigation pleaded guilty to smuggling sanctioned Iranian crude oil and agreed to pay a $2.4 million fine over a case involving the tanker Suez Rajan, which carried some 1 million barrels of oil. The U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet, which patrols the Mideast, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the incident. Iran and Oman did not immediately acknowledge the boarding.

Since the collapse of Iran's nuclear deal, waters around the strait have seen a series of ship seizures by Iran, as well as assaults targeting shipping that the Navy has blamed on Tehran. Iran and the Navy also have had a series of tense encounters in the waterway, though recent attention has been focused on the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels of Yemen attacking ships in the Red Sea amid Israel's war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The United States and its allies also have been seizing Iranian oil cargoes since 2019. That has led to a series of attacks in the Mideast attributed to the Islamic Republic, as well as ship seizures by Iranian military and paramilitary forces that threaten global shipping.

Iran ADMITS It Seizes Oil Tanker in Gulf of Oman in Dispute With US

Iran has said that its forces seized an oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman, which was reported earlier in the day to have been boarded by armed men in military uniforms.

“The Navy of the Islamic Republic of Iran seized an American oil tanker in the waters of the Gulf of Oman in accordance with a court order,” the state-run IRNA news agency said.

The seizure also comes after weeks of attacks by Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthi rebels on vessels in the Red Sea.

The second round of bombing was much smaller in scale and targeted a Houthi radar facility, an official confirmed. It came after the Houthis fired at least one anti-ship missile earlier the same day.

Biden had vowed to continue the bombardment if the Houthis refused to cease attacking vessels in the Red Sea.

But in New York City protests erupted after demonstrators swarmed First Avenue near the United Nations Yemen Mission to condemn the attack.

The official confirmed the latest strikes were conducted unilaterally by the US.

The blitz on Thursday was a cooperative effort between the US, UK and other allied nations and struck more than 60 targets. They killed five people and wounded six more, a spokesman for the Houthi military told CNN.

But US officials determined the additional location, a radar site, still presented a threat to maritime traffic, one official said.

President Joe Biden said on Friday that the American airstrikes against the Houthi in Yemen were a success, adding that he's delivered a message to Iran with them.

'I don't think there's any civilian casualties — that's another reason why it's a success,' Biden told reporters traveling with him in Pennsylvania.

The White House has said the airstrikes in Yemen, most of which is controlled by the Houthis, were in retaliation for months of attacks by the movement on Red Sea shipping that the rebels cat as a response to the ongoing war in Gaza.

However their targets have become increasingly random and caused disruption to global shipping channels.

When asked if he has a message for Iran, Biden said: 'I've already delivered the message to Iran.' The president also noted Tehran 'doesn't want a war with us,' but said he is willing to bomb the Houthi again if they keep striking at American troops....

OIL PRICE JUMPS

The price of Brent crude oil rose more than $2 on Friday on concern that supplies could be disrupted, but later gave up half its gain. Biden said on Friday he was "very concerned" about the impact of war in the Middle East on oil prices. Commercial ship-tracking data showed at least nine oil tankers stopping or diverting from the Red Sea.

The strikes follow months of raids by Houthi fighters, who have boarded ships they claimed were Israeli or heading for Israel. Many of the vessels had no known connection to Israel.

The United States and some allies sent a naval task force in December, and recent days saw increasing escalation. On Tuesday, the United States and Britain shot down 21 missiles and drones.

However, not all major U.S. allies chose to back the strikes inside Yemen.

The Netherlands, Australia, Canada and Bahrain provided logistical and intelligence support, while Germany, Denmark, New Zealand and South Korea signed a joint statement defending the attacks and warning of further action.

But Italy, Spain and France chose not to sign or participate.

US Delivers 'Private Message' to Iran After Yemen Strikes

'UK Ready to Strike Again' After '100 Days of HELL'

Houthis vow retaliation after US and UK strike 16 sites in Yemen

Daily Mail 14 JAN 2024

President Biden says the US has delivered a "private message" to Iran about the Houthis in Yemen after the US carried out a second strike on the group.

"We delivered it privately and we're confident we're well-prepared," he said without giving further details.

The US said its latest strike was a "follow-on action" targeting radar.

Iran denies involvement in attacks by the Houthis in the Red Sea.

However Tehran is suspected of supplying the Houthis with weapons, and the US says Iranian intelligence is critical to enabling them to target ships.

Joint UK-US airstrikes targeted nearly 30 Houthi positions in the early hours of Friday with the support of Western allies including Australia and Canada.

A day later, the US Central Command said it carried out its latest strike on a Houthi radar site in Yemen using Tomahawk land attack cruise missiles.

UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron said Britain had "no choice" but to take military action against the Houthis in Yemen, in response to their attacks on ships in the Red Sea & is 'Ready to Strike Again'

Writing in the Telegraph, he said UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had agreed to a request by the US to assist with the "limited and targeted" strikes.

A Houthi spokesman told Reuters the strikes had no significant impact on the group's ability to affect shipping.

The Houthis are an armed group from a sub-sect of Yemen's Shia Muslim minority, the Zaidis. Most Yemenis live in areas under Houthi control. As well as Sanaa and the north of Yemen, the Houthis control the Red Sea coastline.

The official Western government line is that the ongoing air strikes on Houthi targets are quite separate from the war in Gaza. They are "a necessary and proportionate response" to the unprovoked and unacceptable Houthi attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea, they say.

In Yemen and the wider Arab world they are viewed rather differently.

There, they are seen as the US and UK joining in the Gaza war on the side of Israel, since the Houthis have declared their actions to be in solidarity with Hamas and the people of Gaza. One theory even says that "the West is doing Netanyahu's bidding".

It is still possible that these airstrikes will have a chilling effect on the Houthis. They will certainly degrade their capacity to attack ships in the short term.

But the longer these airstrikes persist, the greater the risk that the US and UK get sucked into another conflict in Yemen.

It has taken the Saudis more than eight years to extricate themselves from there after it intervened in the country's civil war - and the Houthis are now more entrenched than ever.

A US fighter jet has shot down a cruise missile fired towards an American destroyer by Houthi rebels - their first response to a series of drone strikes from Western forces.

The United States military and its allies began airstrikes on Friday on the rebels following weeks of assaults on shipping in the Red Sea.

The Houthis had targeted the corridor linking Asian and Mideast energy shipments to the Suez Canal over the Israel-Hamas war.

The Shiite rebel group allied with Iran, which seized Yemen's capital in 2014, are yet to acknowledge the missile attack.

Rebels were seen posing with machine guns and rocket launchers in photos released Sunday. Fighters were also photographed earlier in the weekend conducting drills and recording themselves in terrain made to resemble Jewish settlements.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the US would retaliate for the latest attack, though Joe Biden said he 'will not hesitate to direct further measures to protect our people and the free flow of international commerce as necessary.'

The Houthi fire on Sunday went in the direction of the USS Laboon, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer in the southern reaches of the Red Sea, Central Command said.

The missile came from near Hodeida, a Red Sea port city long held by the Houthis. 'An anti-ship cruise missile was fired from Iranian-backed Houthi militant areas of Yemen toward USS Laboon,' Central Command said.

'There were no injuries or damage reported.' The first day of US-led strikes on Friday hit 28 locations and struck more than 60 targets with cruise missiles and bombs.

Sites hit included weapon depots, radars and command centers, including in remote mountain areas.

The Houthis have yet to acknowledge how severe the infrastructure damage was from the strikes, which they said killed five of their troops and wounded six others.

But two officials told the New York Times on Sunday they still have about 75 percent of their ability to fire missiles and drones at ships transiting the Red Sea.

This is despite the US and its allies claiming to have damaged or destroyed about 90 percent of the targets struck.

Houthi Missile Hits US-Owned Container Ship in Gulf of Aden

Houthi Attacks Continue as US Cargo Ship Hit in Defiance of Strikes on Yemen

Gibraltar Eagle vessel not seriously damaged in assault that raises some doubts over efficacy of UK-US action

The Guardian 16 JAN 2024

The cargo ship Gibraltar Eagle in Belgium last July. It has been hit by a missile fired from Yemen.

The Iran-backed Houthi militia group has continued to attack commercial shipping, hitting an American-owned container ship with a ballistic missile in defiance of a wave of US and UK strikes on Yemen.

The strike against the Marshall Islands-flagged Gibraltar Eagle container ship represented a widening of the theatre of war beyond the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. The strike hit the cargo hold of the ship and while it was thought to have caused no major damage, will add to fears that the US and UK strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen have not degraded the militia group’s ability to threaten commercial shipping.

Qatar became the latest major user of container ships to announce it will not send liquid gas through the Red Sea for the foreseeable future. The level of traffic was said to have dropped markedly overall since the US and UK strikes on Thursday.

The Houthis, an Iranian-backed Shia group that has been battling for control of Yemen for more than 20 years, say the more than 30 attacks on commercial shipping over the past six weeks are part of an effort to put pressure on Israel to allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza.

The Houthis’ chief negotiator, Mohammed Abdulsalam, said on Monday that the group’s position had not changed after the US-led strikes, and indicated that strikes would continue on ships heading to Israel:

“Our position on the events in Palestine and the aggression against Gaza has not changed and would not change, neither after the strike nor after the threats.

“The attacks to prevent Israeli ships or those heading to the ports of occupied Palestine are continuing.”

The Houthis say an Israeli ceasefire in Gaza would immediately lead to the free flow of ships through the Red Sea, and lift pressure on global supply chains.

The Biden administration plans to put the Houthi rebel group in Yemen back on its list of foreign terrorists organizations

In its waning days, the Trump administration designated the Houthis a Foreign Terrorist Organization over the strong objections of human rights and humanitarian aid groups.

The foreign terrorist designation barred Americans and people and organizations subject to U.S. jurisdiction from providing 'material support' to the Houthis, which the groups said would result in an even greater humanitarian catastrophe than what was already happening in Yemen.

Shortly after the Biden administration took office, Blinken removed the designations in a step that was roundly criticized by conservative lawmakers and others but was intended to keep much-needed food, medicine and other aid flowing to Yemen.

The specially designated global terrorists label to be reimposed on the Houthis does not include sanctions for providing 'material support' and it does not come with travel bans that are also imposed with the FTO label.

Thus, it may not pose a substantial impediment to providing aid to Yemeni civilians.

The redesignation is not not wholly unexpected. Asked during an exchange with reporters last week if he thought the Houthis are a terrorist group, President Joe Biden responded, 'I think they are.'

The US military's latest move against the Iran-aligned group is over its targeting of Red Sea shipping after it declared war on the US over its support of Israel in the war against Hamas.

The strikes came a day after the Yemeni rebels attacked a US cargo ship on Monday.

The Houthis, who control the most populous parts of Yemen, have claimed their attacks on commercial ships are aimed at supporting the Palestinians in Israel's war in Gaza. Their attacks have disrupted global shipping and stoked fears of global inflation. They have also deepened concern that fallout from the Israel-Hamas war could destabilize the Middle East.

The Houthi movement has vowed to keep up attacks despite the strikes last week against radar and missile capabilities. Some experts believe they welcome a conflict with the United States and its allies.

On Sunday, Houthi fire went in the direction of the USS Laboon, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer operating in the southern reaches of the Red Sea, the US military’s Central Command said in a statement.

The missile came from near Hodeida, a Red Sea port city long held by the Houthis, the US said.

The Houthis have been attacking commercial ship sin the Red Sea which they claim are headed to Israel as they aim to support Palestinians in the war between Israel and Hamas.

A US fighter jet blasted the Houthi cruise missile out of the sky over the Red Sea on Sunday before it was able to hit its target, the USS Laboon.

British and US Troops Launch Strikes Against Houthi Targets in Yemen For Second Time:

Fighter jets, warships and submarines pound missile launch facilities across the country in retaliation for Iran-backed militia's Red Sea ship attacks

MailOnline News 23 JAN 2024

British and US forces have hit Houthi missile sites in Yemen with a second wave of joint airstrikes aimed at 'dealing another blow' to the Iran-backed group as it continues to terrorise ships in the Red Sea, officials have said.

Warship and submarine-launched Tomahawk missiles, as well as fighter jets, have been used to take out Houthi missile storage sites and launchers, according to US defence officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

A joint statement from the UK, US, Australia, Bahrain and a number of other nations said they had 'conducted an additional round of proportionate and necessary strikes against eight Houthi targets in Yemen'.

'Today's strike specifically targeted a Houthi underground storage site and locations associated with the Houthis' missile and air surveillance capabilities,' the statement added.

The Ministry of Defence said four Typhoon fighter jets, supported by a pair of Voyager refuelling tankers, flew from Cyrus to join US forces in the airstrikes.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and US president Joe Biden held a phone call in which they agreed to continue efforts to 'deter and disrupt' ongoing attacks by the Houthis on commercial and military vessels.

Oil Tanker on Fire in Red Sea After Strike Claimed by Houthis

MailOnline 27 JAN 2024

An oil tanker is on fire off the coast of Yemen after a missile strike claimed by the Houthis.

Multinational firm Trafigura, which has offices in London, said the safety of crew on the Marlin Luanda, a vessel operated on its behalf, is its “foremost priority”.

Military ships in the region are on the way to provide assistance, it said.

UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported an incident 60 nautical miles south-east of Aden on Friday.

It comes after an earlier incident in which two missiles were reported to have exploded in the water and “vessel and crew are safe and no damage reported”.

The Yemeni armed forces claimed it had targeted Marlin Luanda, which it described as a British oil tanker, in the Gulf of Aden.

Shipping data suggests the vessel sails under the flag of the Marshall Islands.

UKMTO said authorities have been informed and are responding to the latest strike, warning other vessels to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity.

The Houthis have repeatedly launched attacks on ships in the Red Sea since November over Israel’s war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

But they have frequently targeted vessels with tenuous or no clear links to Israel, endangering shipping on a key route for global trade.

Alongside numerous air strikes on key Houthi targets, the UK and US are also targeting key figures in the Iran-backed militant group with sanctions.

A second series of UK and US air strikes, carried out at the start of the week, appears to have done little to deter Houthi action.

Houthi Ballistic Missile Strike On U.S. Navy Destroyer In Red Sea

JERUSALEM (AP) - Yemen's Houthi rebels launched a missile Friday at a U.S. warship patrolling the Gulf of Aden, forcing it to shoot down the projectile, and struck a British vessel as their aggressive attacks on maritime traffic continue.

The attack on the U.S. warship, the destroyer USS Carney, marked a further escalation in the biggest confrontation at sea the U.S. Navy has seen in the Middle East in decades, as Houthi missile fire set another commercial vessel ablaze Friday night.

The Carney attack represents the first time the Houthis directly targeted a U.S. warship since the rebels began their assaults on shipping in October, a U.S. official said on condition of anonymity because no authorization had been given to discuss the incident.

Later Friday, the British military´s United Kingdom Maritime Operations, which oversees Mideast waterways, acknowledged a vessel had been struck by a missile and was on fire in the Gulf of Aden.

Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree did not acknowledge the Carney attack, but claimed the missile attack on the commercial vessel that set it ablaze. He identified the vessel as the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker Marlin Luanda.

A U.S. military official confirmed the vessel was struck by a single anti-ship ballistic missile fired from Houthi-controlled Yemen. The Carney was sailing toward the stricken ship to provide assistance but had not reached it as of Friday evening.

The Houthi's now direct attacks on U.S. warships are the most aggressive escalation of it's campaign in the Red Sea since the Israel-Hamas war broke out. The U.S. has tried to temper its descriptions of the Houthi's strikes, and said it is difficult to determine what exactly the Houthis are trying to hit in part try to prevent the conflict from becoming a wider regional war.

The U.S. and allies had also held off for weeks on striking Houthi weapons sites in Yemen, but they are now taking regular action, often destroying launch sites that are armed but have not fired, and are deemed an imminent threat.

Despite the Carney being directly targeted, a statement by the U.S. military's Central Command Friday said the Houthis fired "toward" the Carney.

Acknowledging Friday´s assault as a direct attack on a U.S. warship is important, said Brad Bowman, a senior director at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies.

"They´re now finally calling a spade a spade, and saying that, yeah, they´re trying to attack our forces, they´re trying to kill us," he said.

Tempering the language and response, while aimed at preventing a wider war, has had the opposite effect of further emboldening the Houthis, Bowman said.

In Friday´s attack, an anti-ship ballistic missile came near the USS Carney, an Arleigh-Burke class destroyer that´s been involved in American operations to try to stop the Houthi campaign since November, Central Command said.

"The missile was successfully shot down by USS Carney," it said. "There were no injuries or damage reported."

The attacks were the latest assaults by the rebels in their campaign against ships traveling through the Red Sea and surrounding waters, which has disrupted global trade amid Israel´s war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The U.S. and Britain have launched multiple rounds of airstrikes since the Houthi attacks began targeting Houthi missile depots and launcher sites in Yemen, a country that's been wracked by conflict since the rebels seized the capital, Sanaa, in 2014.

Since November, the rebels have repeatedly targeted ships in the Red Sea, saying they were avenging Israel´s offensive in Gaza against Hamas. But they have frequently targeted vessels with tenuous or no clear links to Israel, imperiling shipping in a key route for global trade between Asia, the Mideast and Europe.

Since the airstrike campaign began, the rebels now say they´ll target American and British ships as well. On Wednesday, two American-flagged ships carrying cargo for the U.S. Defense and State departments came under attack by the Houthis, forcing an escorting U.S. Navy warship to shoot some of the projectiles down.

The U.S. Navys´ top Mideast commander told the AP on Monday that the Houthi attacks were the worst since the so-called Tanker War of the 1980s.

It culminated in a one-day naval battle between Washington and Tehran, and also saw the U.S. Navy accidentally shoot down an Iranian passenger jet, killing 290 people in 1988.

UK Warship Shoots Down Houthi Drone in The Red Sea

MailOnline 29 JAN 2024

President Joe Biden said on Sunday that the US “shall respond” after three American troops were killed and dozens more were injured in an overnight drone strike in north-east Jordan near the Syrian border.

Mr Biden blamed Iran-backed militias for the first US fatalities after months of strikes by such groups against American forces across the Middle East amid the Israel-Hamas war.

Mr Biden, who was travelling in South Carolina, asked for a moment of silence during an appearance at a Baptist church’s banquet hall.

“We had a tough day last night in the Middle East. We lost three brave souls in an attack on one of our bases,” he said. After the moment of silence, Mr Biden added, “and we shall respond”.

With an increasing the risk of military escalation in the region, US officials were working to conclusively identify the precise group responsible for the attack, but they have assessed that one of several Iranian-backed groups was behind it.

Mr Biden said in a written statement that the United States “will hold all those responsible to account at a time and in a manner (of) our choosing”.

What is Tower 22, Site of The Attack on US Troops in Jordan?

LOCATION

Tower 22 holds a strategically important location in Jordan, at the most northeastern point where the country's borders meet Syria and Iraq.

PURPOSE

Little is publicly known about the base. But it is near Al Tanf garrison, which is located across the border in Syria, and which houses a small number of U.S. troops. Tanf had been key in the fight against Islamic State and has assumed a role as part of a U.S. strategy to contain Iran's military build-up in eastern Syria.

Tower 22 is located close enough to U.S. troops at Tanf that it could potentially help support them, while also potentially countering Iran-backed militants in the area and allowing troops to keep an eye on remnants of Islamic State in the region.

U.S. TROOPS IN JORDAN

Jordan's army is one of the largest recipients of Washington's foreign military financing.

The kingdom has hundreds of U.S. trainers and is one of the few regional allies that hold extensive exercises with U.S. troops throughout the year.

Since the start of the Syrian conflict in 2011, Washington has spent hundreds of millions of dollars to help Amman set up an elaborate surveillance system known as the Border Security Programme to stem infiltration by militants from Syria and Iraq.

MANY UNKNOWNS

It is unclear how many U.S. troops are actually stationed on Tower 22. Also unclear are the type of weapons kept, air defenses used, and what exactly went wrong.

HMS Diamond shoots down illegal Houthi drone attack in latest Red Sea skirmish - as Defence Secretary Grant Shapps says Britain is 'undaunted' by Iran-backed rebel strikes...

A British warship last night shot down an illegal Houthi drone attack in a new Red Sea skirmish.

Crew on the HMS Diamond successfully repelled a drone strike from the Iran-backed Houthi rebel group as spiralling tensions in the Middle East threaten to blow out into a full-scale regional war.

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps today said on Twitter/X: 'The UK remains undaunted after yesterday's illegal attack on @HMSDiamond by the Iranian-backed Houthis. Our commitment to protect innocent lives and the freedom of navigation is absolutely unwavering.'

The Ministry of Defence said: 'Yesterday HMS Diamond successfully repelled a drone attack from the Iranian-backed Houthis in the Red Sea. Deploying her Sea Viper missile system, Diamond destroyed a drone targeting her, with no injuries or damaged sustained to Diamond or her crew.

'These intolerable and illegal attacks are completely unacceptable, and it is our duty to protect the freedom of navigation in the Red Sea. We want to thank the brave crew of HMS Diamond for their service to defend British and international interests.'

TIMELINE- At LEAST 150 Iran-Backed Attacks on US, UK & Allied Troops in The Middle East Since 7 Oct.

The unmanned aerial drone attack that killed three U.S. service members and wounded dozens in northeastern Jordan on Sunday is the latest by Iran-aligned militia groups in Iraq and Syria.

The groups oppose Israel's campaign in Gaza, which has killed more than 26,000, and hold the U.S. partly responsible. They have attacked U.S. troops in the region over 150 times since the war started in response to Hamas's October 7 attack in Israel that killed about 1,200.

About 2,500 U.S. troops are stationed in Iraq and 900 in Syria to prevent a resurgence of Islamic State militants.

Here is a timeline of major attacks since then:

OCT. 18 - U.S. forces in Iraq are targeted in two separate drone attacks. One of the drones is intercepted but still explodes, causing minor injuries and damaging some equipment.

OCT. 19 - U.S. forces in Syria bring down two drones targeting them, leading to some minor injuries. Separately, drones and rockets target two bases housing U.S. forces in Iraq.

OCT. 26 - An Iran-backed militia launches a drone at an air base that penetrates U.S. air defenses and crashes into the barracks housing American troops but fails to detonate. A service member suffers a concussion from the impact.

NOV. 17 - U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria are attacked three times; a drone attack in Syria injures a service member who quickly returns to duty while two other attacks in Iraq fail to cause damage or injuries.

NOV. 23 - U.S. and international forces in northeastern Syria are attacked with drones and rockets four times in 24 hours, but suffer no casualties and only minor damage.

DEC. 25 - A one-way drone attack in Iraq by Iran-aligned militants leaves one U.S. service member in critical condition and wounds two other U.S. personnel.

JAN. 9 - A U.S. air strike on a rocket launcher foils an attack on an air base in Iraq.

JAN. 20 - Four U.S. personnel suffer traumatic brain injuries after Iran-backed militias fire multiple ballistic missiles and rockets at an air base in Iraq.

President Joe Biden has 'addressed' the U.S. military strikes that pummeled militia targets inside Iraq and Syria – indicating more displays of military might were on the way.

'Our response began today. It will continue at times and places of our choosing,' President Joe Biden said in a written statement after the U.S. unleashed strikes on militia targets in Iraq and Syria

The president began by referencing his attendance at the dignified transfer ceremony for three U.S. troops killed in the drone attack in Jordan, then only briefly described the complex air assault the U.S. had orchestrated days later in response.

'Our response began today. It will continue at times and places of our choosing,' Biden said, in just the latest instance of language telegraphic a sustained response.

The White House sent out the statement while the president was at his home in Wilmington, Delaware, after attending the ceremony at Dover Air Force Base.

This past Sunday, three American soldiers were killed in Jordan by a drone launched by militant groups backed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC). Earlier today, I attended the dignified return of these brave Americans at Dover Airforce Base, and I have spoken with each of their families,' Biden began.

'This afternoon, at my direction, U.S. military forces struck targets at facilities in Iraq and Syria that the IRGC and affiliated militia use to attack U.S. forces,' he said.

Amid concerns about the expansion of a wider war and warnings by Tehran, Biden said that 'The United States does not seek conflict in the Middle East or anywhere else in the world. But let all those who might seek to do us harm know this: If you harm an American, we will respond.'

Lt. Gen. Arthur Sims, director for operations for the Joint Staff at the Pentagon, told reporters on a national security call Friday evening that the U.S. hit 85 targets, relying on B-1 aircraft sent from within the continental United States.

'This was designed around the weather when we had our best opportunity related to the weather.'

Britain Joins US in Fresh Strikes Against Houthi Forces in Yemen

36 targets are blasted in THIRD wave of attacks to 'protect innocent lives' says Grant Shapps - as he insists bombing runs are 'not an escalation' of Red Sea crisis

MailOnline 4 FEB 2024

Britain said it engaged in another wave of 'proportionate and targeted strikes'

MADMEN FANATICS

Britain last night joined the US in a fresh wave of strikes against Houthis in Yemen - with at least 36 targets blasted in the third set of attacks to 'protect innocent lives', Grant Shapps has said.

The UK said on Saturday it had engaged in another wave of 'proportionate and targeted strikes' against Iran-linked Houthi militants.

The attacks are meant to further disable Iran-backed groups that have relentlessly assaulted American and international interests with drones and missiles in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war.

Defence Secretary Mr Shapps insisted the bombings are 'not an escalation' of the Red Sea crisis and claimed the latest strikes will have further degraded the Houthis' capabilities.

'The Houthis' attacks on commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea are illegal and unacceptable and it is our duty to protect innocent lives and preserve freedom of navigation,' he said.

'That is why the Royal Air Force engaged in a third wave of proportionate and targeted strikes against Houthi military targets in Yemen.

'We acted alongside our US allies, with the support of many international partners, in self-defence and in accordance with international law.'

The Houthi targets were in 10 different locations, and were struck by U.S. F/A-18 fighter jets from the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier and by American warships firing Tomahawk missiles from the Red Sea, the U.S. officials said.

Later, Britain's Ministry of Defence confirmed RAF Typhoon FGR4s were supported by Voyager tankers during the joint mission with Washington, with more than 30 sites across 13 locations hit by coalition forces, according to a joint statement by the eight nations involved.

The coalition reiterated its warning to Houthi leadership, saying 'we will not hesitate to continue to defend lives and the free flow of commerce in one of the world's most critical waterways'.

Foreign Secretary Lord David Cameron has vowed to hold Iran to account for the actions of its proxy groups, such as the Houthis in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Iraqi government spokesperson Bassim al-Awadi said in a statement Saturday that the strikes in Iraq near the Syrian border killed 16, including civilians, and there was 'significant damage' to homes and private properties.

A U.S. official said Saturday that an initial battle damage assessment showed the U.S. had struck each of its planned targets, in addition to a few 'dynamic targets' that popped up as the mission unfolded.

These new targets included a surface-to-air missile site and drone launch sites. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to provide details that were not yet public, did not yet have a casualty assessment.

Iraq´s foreign ministry announced Saturday it would summon the U.S. embassy´s chargé d´affaires - the ambassador being outside of the country - to deliver a formal protest over U.S. strikes on 'Iraqi military and civilian sites.'

The U.S. said Friday it had informed Iraq of the impending strikes before they started.

Iran, meanwhile, has attempted to distance itself from the attack, saying that the militias act independently of its direction.

Iraqi spokesperson al-Awadi condemned the strikes as a violation of Iraqi sovereignty, particularly since some of them targeted facilities of the Population Mobilization Forces.

US Owned Cargo Ship Hit in Missile Attack in Yemen - Day After Houthi Rebels Blasted British Vessel in War-Torn Red Sea

The Iran-backed Houthis also claimed they shot down an American MQ-9 Reaper drone, something not immediately acknowledged by US forces in the region

MailOnline 19 FEB 2024

Iran-backed Houthi rebels continue to attack vessels in the Red Sea to protest the West's support of Israel in the war against Hamas in Gaza

A US-owned cargo ship has reported a missile strike off the coast of Yemen this morning.

No crew were injured in the strike, which came a day after a British cargo ship was forced to evacuate in a similar hit.

The security firm Ambrey reported the strike on Monday morning. It remains unclear who owns the vessel, that was 93 nautical miles east of Aden in Yemen at the time.

Ambrey described the vessel as a Greek-flagged, US-owned bulk carrier bound for Aden, Yemen, from Argentina. Those details, combined with ship-tracking data, identified the vessel as the Sea Champion. Its managers could not be immediately reached.

Both Ambrey and UKMTO (United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations) said the vessel and its crew - including five Greek members - were safe and proceeding to the next port of call.

The strike is the latest in a series of attacks against Western ships in the region where Iran-backed Houthi rebels continue to attack vessels in the Red Sea to protest the West's support of Israel in the war against Hamas in Gaza.

The UK's Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said it received a report of an incident 35 nautical miles south of Al Mukha in Yemen on Sunday night. An explosion in close proximity to the vessel had resulted in damage, but all crew are safe and 'authorities are investigating'

UK Cargo Ship Rubymar Sinks in Red Sea After Houthi Attack

British-registered cargo ship sinks after being hit by Houthi missiles in the Red Sea as crew were forced to abandon following attack

MailOnline 2 MAR 2024

The bulk carrier had been losing oil after it was attacked by the terrorist group

A British-registered freighter has sunk in the Red Sea after the crew were forced to abandon ship following an attack by Yemeni Houti rebels.

The crew of the cargo ship, which comes in at 171.6m long and 27m wide, was forced to 'abandon the vessel' following the attack, though the UKMTO said yesterday that all crew are safe and 'authorities are investigating'

The Cargo ship Rubymar, which was abandoned in the southern Red Sea after being targeted by Yemen's Houthis on February 18, has sunk, a statement by the internationally recognised Yemeni government said on Saturday.

The attack occurred in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, 35 nautical miles south of Al Mukha, Yemen, on Sunday night, the UK's Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said, against a vessel that was later identified as the Rubymar.

The first vessel is the first to be fully destroyed as part of their campaign over Israel's war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The Rubymar had been drifting northward after being attacked.

Yemen's internationally recognised government, as well as a regional military official, confirmed the ship sank. The official spoke on condition of anonymity as the information had not been cleared for publication.

The Rubymar's Beirut-based manager could not be immediately reached for comment.

Yemen's exiled government, which has been backed by a Saudi-led coalition since 2015, said the Rubymar sank late Friday as stormy weather took hold over the Red Sea. The vessel had been abandoned for 12 days after the attack, though plans had been floated to try and tow the ship to a safe port.

The Iran-backed Houthis, who had claimed the ship sank almost instantly after the attack, did not immediately acknowledge the ship's sinking.

Already, many ships have turned away from the route. The sinking could see further detours and higher insurance rates put on vessels plying the waterway - potentially driving up global inflation and affecting aid shipments to the region.

Royal Navy Ship in Combat, Shoots Down Ballistic Missiles Protecting US Warship and Container Ship

HMS Diamond thwarts attack on container ship and US warship by Yemens’ Houthi rebels

The Guardian 26 APR 2024

HMS Diamond in Combat -
The shooting down of the missile photographed from on board HMS Diamond...

A Royal Navy warship has shot down enemy ballistic missiles in combat, Grant Shapps, the Defence Secretary, has said.

HMS Diamond intercepted the weapon, which was fired by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels at a merchant vessel in the Gulf of Aden, on Wednesday.

The Type 45 destroyer’s Sea Viper missile system swung into action to down the Iranian-made missile after it was fired from nearby Yemen.

It was the first time a Navy warship had shot down a missile of any kind in combat since the Gulf War in 1991, when HMS Gloucester, a Type 42 destroyer, took out an Iraqi Silkworm missile that had been fired at a US warship.

“I want to thank the brave crew of HMS Diamond for her vital role in saving innocent lives and protecting international shipping from illegal Houthi attacks,” Mr Shapps said.

Commander Peter Evans, the commanding officer of HMS Diamond, said: “I’m immensely proud of the ship’s company, whose professionalism meant they were able to react in a split second to defeat the threat today. As ever, Diamond is ready to protect seafarers and ensure the freedom of the seas.”

HMS Diamond has been deployed in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since March as part of the US-led Operation Prosperity Guardian to protect commercial vessels.

The Houthis announced on Wednesday that they had targeted the Maersk Yorktown vessel and an American warship in the Gulf of Aden.

US military officials said the attack had been thwarted by a member of the Western coalition “successfully engaging” an anti-ship ballistic missile.

The intercepted weapon was believed to be either the Iranian-made Fateh-110 short-range ballistic missile or the longer-ranged Zol***har, a mobile missile capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 435 miles.

HMS Diamond was dispatched to the region to replace HMS Richmond after that warship successfully shot down two Houthi drones in the southern Red Sea using Sea Ceptor missiles, becoming the first Navy vessel to fire them in combat.

Diamond’s Sea Viper system, used to launch Aster 15 and Aster 30 missiles, is a key pillar of the UK’s air defence strategy.

The missiles are known for their precision and long-range capabilities, able to intercept targets at a range of around 40 miles and at an altitude of 11 miles.

Phalanx machine-guns and 30mm cannons are also mounted on each side of HMS Diamond, with the latter used to down a Houthi drone.

The Houthi rebel group – which supports Hamas in the war against Israel – has launched more than 50 attacks on commercial shipping, seized one vessel and sunk another since November, according to the US Maritime Administration.
