World War 3 ALERT: Royal Navy Ships THREATENED by Iran's Fast-Attack Machine Gun Boats in the Gulf

A ROYAL NAVY type 45 Destroyer was threatened by three Iranian fast attack boats while escorting a trio of British vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, sparking fears of an imminent international attack.

The Telegraph / Express UK, 23 Oct 2018

HMS Dragon, which patrols the Eastern Mediterranean, was travelling through the Persian Gulf when Iran’s machine gun boats halted its course and demanded Dragon to remain 1000 yards clear of the port side.

The captain of the type 45 destroyer immediately ordered five blasts of the ship’s horn, which is the international warning sign.

The Officer of the Watch then radioed over to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards - the Span Navy - warning that its boats prevented the Destroyer from completing its journey....

The three Iranian Fast Attack Craft speed towards HMS Dragon from the port side, threatening to weave between the Royal Navy Type 45 Destroyer and the trio of British vessels she is escorting through the Strait of Hormuz.

Although dwarfed by the British ships – HMS Dragon’s twin gas-turbine generators alone produce enough energy to power a city the size of Leicester - the Iranian speed boats could still cause significant damage if they attack, not to mention spark an international incident.

As they race over the water the Revolutionary Guards on board point film cameras towards the British to gauge their reaction. HMS Dragon’s Captain, Commander Mike Carter-Quinn, orders five deafening blasts of the ship’s horn - the international warning signal - as his crew don helmets and body armour and man the heavy machine guns.

The Officer of the Watch radios over to the Sapan Navy (the name for the naval element of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards) to warn its vessels have impeded the Destroyer’s passage and request they remain 1000 yards clear of the port side.

“For your information we are here to safeguard our national sovereignty and we are doing routine operations,” comes the reply from the Iranians.

The Telegraph reporter was on board

Such geo-political drama between Britain and Iran is a routine and almost daily occurrence on the Strait of Hormuz between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, one of the most strategic sections of water in the world.

Fortunately on this occasion the Iranians heed the British and eventually move aside.

According to Commander Carter-Quinn, the next steps would be firing flares and ultimately warning shots.

“You have to provide a robust response,” he says. “The day you don’t take it seriously is the day you become unstuck.”

The Royal Navy navigates a delicate diplomatic course through these choppy waters
.

“The contest between Iran and Saudi Arabia provides the backdrop to everything out here,” says Lieutenant Commander Richard Attwater, HMS Dragon’s second-in-command. “It’s a very volatile region. And we’re sailing 8,000 tonnes of Britain right through the middle of it.”

Britain has four Royal Navy Minehunters and a Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) logistics vessel permanently based in Bahrain. The principal mission of the Minehunters is to clear the route of Britain’s nuclear armed submarines from their base in Scotland to the North Atlantic. In recent years the fleet of 13 vessels has also been used to keep open the shipping lanes in the Gulf, through which one fifth of the world’s oil is carried.

The Iranians heed the British and eventually move aside

The area has been a flashpoint for decades and the politics of the region remains intricate and finely poised. Britain has friends here, more since America’s pivot to Asia has left many Gulf states questioning the US commitment to the region. But old enmities persist.

“Iran assumes the UK is behind everything that goes wrong for them,” says Professor Michael Clarke of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI).
“They use the Gulf as a tap to turn on the tension and indicate their degree of cooperation [with the international community].”

Britain’s contribution to the 33-nation Maritime Coalition Force based in Bahrain helps ensure safe passage from the Suez Canal to the Indian Ocean. If the global supply chain was disrupted the effects would be felt rapidly.

Delivering world-leading mine survey, detection and destruction capabilities, the sonars on the Minehunters can distinguish objects as small as tin cans. Minehunter hulls are made of glass reinforced plastic instead of steel. It makes for quieter running and enables the crews to detect magnetic waves and acoustic pulses.

When a suspicious object has been identified the crew release an unmanned drone, Seafox, which can identify mines and place an explosive charge. The drone relays everything it sees back on board to assess whether the target is a mine, rock or piece of debris. Even in the Gulf it is not unusual to find a shopping trolley on the seabed.

British navy ships have been present in the Omani deep-water port of Duqm to take part in the maritime phase of Exercise Saif Sareea III, one of the largest international military exercises in the world.

Royal Navy Minehunter ships based in Bahrain

As part of Exercise Saif Sareea III 5,000 British military personnel join 65,000 Omani troops in practising desert warfare. Duqm port, the off-loading point, has 2km-long jetties abutting very deep water. Were Britain’s new aircraft carriers to be required to come this way in the future, Duqm is one of a very small number of places they could berth alongside.

The point is not lost on the Omanis. Outside the port, heading towards the month-old international airport on the traffic-free three-lane carriageway of Airport Road, wooden signs announce ‘education zone’ or ‘health zone’ to the empty expanse of rocky desert.
This place will never draw the tourists like Dubai - the regular south-west monsoon will see to that - but it seeks to draw huge investment and become an economic hub. China has already signed up.

For Britain’s part, the attractions of a military staging post such as Duqm are clear.

Here our navy ships can loiter with the capability to interdict shipping, raid ashore or provide humanitarian relief to a disaster zone.

This is the Royal Navy in 2018: on operations every day of the year, employing hard and soft power. It is not problem-free: tours at sea are generally longer than in the past to make best use of the limited number of personnel, and serviceability of fleet is a concern.

But there is also cause for optimism.

The Minehunters, 'Britain’s tupperware warriors', in the words of their commander, are the envy of the world. Maintaining trade routes in the face of regular provocation, they offer an example of how shared risk and enterprise can be mutually beneficial in an arena far from home.

Ensuring a naval commitment in the face of these dynamics is costly and dangerous.

But according to Commander Ashley Spencer, head of the Mine Counter Measures fleet: “We can’t afford not to.”

Movies IRAN Revolutionary Guards Colonel Assassinated

Iran Vows Retaliation After U.S. Airstrike Kills Top General Qasem Soleimani in Baghdad

BBC 3 JAN 2020

Iran's most powerful military commander, Gen Qasem Soleimani, has been killed by a US air strike in Iraq.

The 62-year-old spearheaded Iranian military operations in the Middle East as head of Iran's elite Quds Force.

He was killed at Baghdad airport, along with other Iran-backed militia figures, early on Friday in a strike ordered by US President Donald Trump.

Trump said the general was "directly and indirectly responsible for the deaths of millions of people".

Soleimani's killing marks a major escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Under his leadership, Iran had bolstered Hezbollah in Lebanon and other pro-Iranian militant groups, expanded its military presence in Iraq and Syria and orchestrated Syria's offensive against rebel groups in the country's long civil war.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said "severe revenge awaits the criminals" behind the attack. He also announced three days of national mourning.

Soleimani was widely seen as the second most powerful figure in Iran, behind the Ayatollah Khamenei. The Quds Force, an elite unit of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, reported directly to the ayatollah and Soleimani was hailed as a heroic national figure.

But the US has called the commander and the Quds Force terrorists and holds them responsible for the deaths of hundreds of US personnel.

Trump, who was in Florida at the time of the strike, tweeted an image of the American flag shortly after the news broke.

Tweeting again on Friday, Trump said Soleimani had "killed or badly wounded thousands of Americans... and was plotting to kill many more" and "should have been taken out many years ago".

"While Iran will never be able to properly admit it, Soleimani was both hated and feared within the country," he said.

A statement from the Pentagon - the headquarters of the US Department of Defense - said Soleimani had been "developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region".

"This strike was aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans," it added.

Meanwhile, global oil prices have soared by more than 4% in the wake of the attack.

How Did The Strike Take Place and Who Was Killed?...

Soleimani and officials from Iran-backed militias were leaving Baghdad airport in two cars when they were hit by a US drone strike near a cargo area.

The commander had reportedly flown in from Lebanon or Syria. Several missiles struck the convoy and at least seven people are believed to have died

Iran's Revolutionary Guards said Iraqi militia leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis was among those killed.

Muhandis commanded the Iranian-backed Kataib Hezbollah group, which Washington blamed for a rocket attack which killed a US civilian contractor in northern Iraq last Friday.

He also effectively led the Popular Mobilisation units (PM), an umbrella of militias in Iraq dominated by groups aligned with Iran.

Most of those killed in the strike belonged to the PM, the organisation said. Soleimani's son-in-law and a member of the Lebanese Hezbollah were also among the dead, it added.

The Pentagon statement said: "At the direction of the president, the US military has taken decisive defensive action to protect US personnel abroad by killing Qasem Soleimani."

It added: "The United States will continue to take all necessary action to protect our people and our interests wherever they are around the world."

The drone strike comes days after protesters attacked the US embassy in Baghdad, clashing with US forces at the scene. The Pentagon said Soleimani approved the attacks on the embassy.

Iran's most powerful military figure was regarded as the strategic mastermind behind its vast ambition in the Middle East and the country's real foreign minister when it came to matters of war and peace.

As commander of elite special forces, he orchestrated covert operations, involving a web of proxy militias, across the region. He also commanded political influence inside Iran and was regarded as second only to Iran's all-powerful Supreme Leader.

He was widely considered the architect of President Bashar al-Assad's war in Syria, the ongoing conflict in Iraq, the fight against Islamic State, and many battles beyond.

The silver-haired general with a close-cropped beard was a cult hero for his fighters and the face of evil for his foes. For years, US officials considered killing a cunning adversary who ordered attacks on their forces and taunted them with social media barbs.

At times some of their aims were aligned, including in the fight against Islamic State, but they remained sworn enemies.

Iranian officials are categorical - this is an act of war to be met by "harsh retaliation". Iran has many ways and means to strike back as a long-simmering crisis suddenly moves to a new, dangerous chapter.

How Has Iran Responded?

Foreign Minister Javad Zarif called the attack an "act of international terrorism", tweeting that the US "bears responsibility for all consequences of its rogue adventurism".

President Hassan Rouhani said in a statement: "Iran and the other free nations of the region will take revenge for this gruesome crime from criminal America."

His death, Mr Rouhani added, had redoubled Iran's determination "to stand against America's bullying".

Gen Esmail Qaani, deputy head of the Revolutionary Guards' foreign operations arm, was named as Soleimani's successor by Ayatollah Khamenei.

In others reaction:

  • Iraq's Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi condemned the "assassination" of Soleimani as a "dangerous escalation" of regional tensions
  • Russia said the attack was a "murder" and a "reckless step" by the US
  • Lebanon's Iran-backed Hezbollah group called for Soleimani's death to be avenged
  • Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the US had the "right " to defend itself and praised President Trump for acting "swiftly, forcefully and decisively"
In Washington, members of President Trump's Republican Party welcomed the news. Top House Republican Kevin McCarthy said the strike had been a "display of resolve and strength".

Who was Qasem Soleimani?

From 1998, he led Iran's Quds Force which handles clandestine operations abroad.

Iran has acknowledged the role of the Quds Force in the conflicts in Syria, where it has advised forces supporting President Bashar al-Assad and armed thousands of Shia Muslim militiamen fighting alongside them, and in Iraq, where it has backed a Shia-dominated paramilitary force that helped tackle IS.

These conflicts turned the once-reclusive Soleimani into a something of celebrity in Iran.

The Trump administration has alleged that the Quds Force is "Iran's primary mechanism for cultivating and supporting" US-designated terrorist groups across the Middle East - including Lebanon's Hezbollah movement and Palestinian Islamic Jihad - by providing funding, training, weapons and equipment.

The US designated Iran's Revolutionary Guards and its Quds Force as foreign terrorist organisations in April.

Update re: Iran ATTACKS US Air Bases in Iraq With Ballistic Missiles

Iran Cyber Hacks American Government Website and Gives Chilling Warning

Hackers from Iran have claimed responsibility for a cyber strike on the American Federal Depository Library Programme (FDLP) and warn 'this is just the beginning'

Daily Mirror UK, 5 JAN, 2020.

Hackers claiming to be from Iran have taken control of an official American government site.

Users clicking on the American Federal Depository Library Programme (FDLP) were greeted with a ominous black hacked web page from 'the Islamic Republic of Iran'.

On it is a picture of Donald Trump being hit in the face by an Iranian fist, with blood pouring from his mouth.

Below it are the words 'Hacked by Iran Cyber Security Group Hackers' and 'this is only a small part of Iran's cyber ability' - with Iranian hackers claiming responsibility.

However a US government spokesperson admitted "there is no confirmation" that this is an Iranian cyber attack.

On the site the hackers added 'we are always ready' and 'to be continued'. There is also the hash tag of '#hardrevenge'.

They posted: "This is message from the Islamic Republic of Iran.

“We will not stop supporting our friends in the regions, the oppressed people of Palestine, the oppressed people of Yemen, the people, and the Syrian government, the people and government of Iraq, the oppressed people of Bahrain, the true mujahideen resistance in Lebanon and Palestine.

fdlp.gov/ Iranian Hackers

It comes hours after Trump threatened to hit 52 Iranian sites "very hard" if Iran attacks Americans or US assets.

He was speaking days after a drone strike killed Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani and an Iraqi militia leader.

Donald Trump claimed the US Army has targeted 52 Iranian sites (Image: Polaris / eyevine)

The FDLP is a government programme created to make US federal publications available to the public at no cost.

Soon after users only got an 'Error 520' message when they tried to access the pages.

Sara Sendek, a spokesperson for DHS' Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, said: "We are aware the website of the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) was defaced with pro-Iranian, anti-US messaging.

"At this time, there is no confirmation that this was the action of Iranian state-sponsored actors."

In the picture of Trump being hit were the words: "Martyrdom was his (Soleymani's) reward for years of implacable efforts.

"With his departure and with God's power, his work and path will not cease and severe revenge awaits those criminals who have tainted their filthy with his blood and the blood of other martyrs of last night's incident".

This came after Trump issued a threat to Iran. The strike has raised the spectre of wider conflict in the Middle East.

Iran, Trump wrote, "is talking very boldly about targeting certain USA assets" in revenge for Soleimani's death.

Trump said the United States has "targeted 52 Iranian sites" and that some were "at a very high level & important to Iran & the Iranian culture, and those targets, and Iran itself, WILL BE HIT VERY FAST AND VERY HARD."

"The USA wants no more threats!" Trump said, adding that the 52 targets represented the 52 Americans who were held hostage in Iran for 444 days after being seized at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran in November 1979 - an enduring sore spot in U.S.-Iranian relations.

A close up of the image of Donald Trump

Trump did not identify the sites. The Pentagon referred questions about the matter to the White House, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Among the mourners in Iraq included many militiamen in uniform for whom Muhandis and Soleimani were heroes.

They carried portraits of both men and plastered them on walls and armoured personnel carriers in the procession.

Chants of "Death to America" and "No No Israel" rang out.

In 2012, Iran has launched a software hack on US allies, Saudi Arabia, and took out an estimated 30,000 computers.

Iran is considered one of the world's biggest cyber-security threats along with North Korea, China and Russia.

Movies re: Iran ATTACKS US Air Bases in Iraq With Ballistic Missiles

Iran Attack: US Troops Targeted With Ballistic Missiles

Iran has carried out a ballistic missile attack on air bases housing US forces in Iraq, in retaliation for the US killing of General Qasem Soleimani.

BBC 8 JAN 2020

More than a dozen missiles launched from Iran struck two air bases in Irbil and Al Asad, west of Baghdad.

It is unclear if there have been any casualties.

The initial response from Washington has been muted. President Trump tweeted that all was well and said casualties and damage were being assessed.

Crude oil prices jumped after missile attacks

Which Bases Were Targeted?

Iran's Revolutionary Guards said the attack was in retaliation for the death of Soleimani on Friday - killed in a missile strike outside Baghdad airport on the orders of President Trump .

"We are warning all American allies, who gave their bases to its terrorist army, that any territory that is the starting point of aggressive acts against Iran will be targeted," a statement said.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif later issued a statement on Twitter, claiming the attack was self-defence and denied seeking to escalate the situation into war.

The BBC's Middle East editor Jeremy Bowen in Baghdad says the tweets appear to suggest that Iran wishes to draw a line under its retaliation for the assassination of Soleimani.

What Happened?

Two Iraqi bases housing US and coalition troops were attacked - one at Al Asad and one in Irbil.

Tehran fired more than a dozen ballistic missiles from Iranian territories at about 2:00am local time (10.30pm GMT), just hours after the burial of Soleimani.

The Al-Asad airbase - located in the Anbar province of western Iraq - was hit by at least six missiles.

Earlier in the day, President Trump said a US withdrawal of troops from Iraq would be the worst thing for the country.

His comments came in the wake of a letter, which the US military said had been sent in error, to Iraq's prime minister.

The US has around 5,000 troops in Iraq.

The UK foreign office told the BBC: "We are urgently working to establish the facts on the ground. Our first priority is the security of British personnel."

The UK has put the Royal Navy and military helicopters on standby amid rising tensions in the Middle East, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said earlier.

How Did We Get Here?

The assassination of Soleimani on 3 January was a major escalation in already deteriorating relations between Iran and the US.

The general - who controlled Iran's proxy forces across the Middle East - was regarded as a terrorist by the US government, which says he was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American troops and was plotting "imminent" attacks.

Iran vowed "severe revenge" for his death.

A stampede at the burial in Soleimani's hometown Kerman killed 50 people and injured 200 more on Tuesday.

After the event resumed, top Iranian officials renewed their threats of revenge.

"The martyr Qasem Soleimani is more powerful... now that he is dead," the Revolutionary Guards' commander-in-chief, Maj Gen Hossein Salami, told the crowds.

How Does Iraq Fit into This?

Iran supports a variety of Shia militia groups in neighbouring Iraq. On Friday, Soleimani had just arrived at Baghdad airport and was travelling in a convoy alongside officials from such groups when their cars were hit by several US missiles.

Iraq now finds itself in a difficult position as an ally both of Iran and of the US. Thousands of US troops remain in the country to assist in the broader struggle against the Sunni Islamic State (IS) group but Iraq's government insists the US has acted beyond the terms of this agreement.

Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi labelled the missile strike that killed Soleimani as a "brazen violation of Iraq's sovereignty and a blatant attack on the nation's dignity".

Update re: STONE to TRUMP >Bring in MARTIAL LAW If You Lose Election

Woodward Tells How Allies Tried to Rein in Childish Trump's Foreign Policy

Senator Lindsey Graham, who had emerged as one of his closest advisers, urged him not to take such a “giant step”, that could trigger “almost total war”.

On the golf course, Lindsey Graham urged restraint on Iran, while James Mattis slept in his clothes in case of emergency

The Guardian UK, 11 SEP 2020.

Four days before ordering a drone strike against the Iranian military commander Qassem Suleimani, Donald Trump was debating the assassination on his own Florida golf course, according to Bob Woodward’s new book on the mercurial president.

Trump’s golfing partner that day was Senator Lindsey Graham, who had emerged as one of his closest advisers, and who urged him not to take such a “giant step”, that could trigger “almost total war”.

Graham warned Trump he would be raising the stakes from “playing $10 blackjack to $10,000-a-hand blackjack”.

“This is over the top,” the senator said. “How about hitting someone a level below Suleimani, which would be much easier for everyone to absorb?”

Trump’s chief of staff at the time, Mick Mulvaney, also begged Graham to help change Trump’s mind.

Trump would not be persuaded, pointing to Iranian-orchestrated attacks on US soldiers in Iraq, which he said were masterminded by the Iranian general, the leader of the elite Quds force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

Suleimani was killed in Baghdad on 3 January, triggering a retaliatory Iranian missile strike against a US base in Iraq, but so far not the large-scale conflict Graham and others warned the president about.

The golf course exchange is described in a forthcoming book, Rage, a second volume on the Trump presidency by Woodward, a veteran investigative reporter famous for covering the Watergate affair and the consequent fall of an earlier scandal-ridden president, Richard Nixon.

Woodward interviewed Trump 18 times for the book and spoke extensively to Graham, as well as many presidential aides.

The portrait that emerges is familiar by now: a volatile president, easily swayed by authoritarian leaders and capable of swinging dramatically from fiery bellicosity to fawning over America’s most ardent adversaries.

Nowhere was that whiplash more violent than in policy towards North Korea. The book chronicles the period between July and November 2017 when Pyongyang tested a succession of long-range missiles capable of hitting the US mainland and carried out its sixth underground nuclear test.

Conscious that the next missile could be heading towards the US, and that decisions would have to be taken in minutes that could put the country on the path to nuclear war, the then defence secretary, James Mattis, took to sleeping in his gym clothes and having a flashing light and bell installed in his bathroom in case a missile alert happened when he was in the shower.

He also spent more time praying in the National Cathedral in Washington and preparing himself for the worst. In the US command system, the president has sole authority to launch nuclear weapons, but Mattis believed he would be asked for his recommendations.

“What do you do if you’ve got to do it?” Mattis asked Woodward. “You’re going to incinerate a couple million people. No person has the right to kill a million people, as far as I’m concerned. Yet that’s what I have to confront.”

Mattis’s fears were aggravated by Trump’s furious tweets threatening destruction and “fire and fury” against North Korea.

Mattis said the tweets were “unproductive, childish and dangerous” and pleaded with Trump to stop.

“I got over enjoying public humiliation by second grade,” he told the president, to no avail.

A conflagration was ultimately averted and by early 2018, the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, declared that the goal of developing a nuclear arsenal had been achieved and he would therefore pivot towards focusing on the economy.

Trump also switched direction and made peace overtures to Kim Jong-un, which led to a string of spectacular but ultimately ineffective summits and a remarkable flurry of 27 warm – sometimes breathlessly affectionate – letters between the two leaders, which Woodward has published for the first time.

In December 2018, Kim recalled their first summit 200 days earlier in Singapore.

“Even now I cannot forget that moment of history when I firmly held Your Excellency’s hand at that beautiful and sacred location as the whole world watched,” the North Korean leader wrote. Woodward noted that Trump was thrilled by the use of the title “Excellency”.

The US president described the missives as “love letters” and told Kim they had “a unique style and a special friendship”. After the scare of 2017, the president insisted the flattery was essential for avoiding disaster.

“You can’t mock Kim,” he warned Woodward. “I don’t want to get in a ****ing nuclear war because you mocked him.”

Donald Trump described his correspondence with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un as ‘love letters’.

US intelligence never worked out who had crafted Kim’s purple English prose, but Woodward wrote: “The analysts marveled at the skill someone brought to finding the exact mixture of flattery while appealing to Trump’s sense of grandiosity and being center stage in history.”

The manipulation of Trump by foreign potentates is a recurring theme of the book. Despite the fact that the special counsel’s Russia investigation found no proof of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin, the US director of national intelligence, Dan Coats, became convinced that Vladimir Putin “had something on Trump”.

“How else to explain the president’s behavior? Coats could see no other explanation,” Woodward wrote after interviewing the former spy chief. “He was sure that Trump had chosen to play on the dark side – the moneyed interests in the New York real estate culture, and international finance with its corrupt anything-to-make-a-buck deal making.”

Trump freely admits his affinity for foreign strongmen to Woodward.

“It’s funny the relationships I have,” he told the reporter. “The tougher and meaner they are, the better I get along with them … Explain that to me someday.”

Another example is the Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, implicated by US intelligence in the murder and dismemberment of a US-based Saudi dissident and writer, Jamal Khashoggi, in October 2018. Trump refused to put his own intelligence chiefs’ assessment and congressional outrage over the prince’s protestations of innocence.

“I saved his ass,” Trump is reported as saying. “I was able to get Congress to leave him alone. I was able to get them to stop.”

Woodward repeatedly asked Trump whether he believed in Prince Mohammed’s innocence. The president replied only that “he says very strongly that he didn’t do it” and, when pressed further, diverted the conversation to US arms sales to Saudi Arabia.

In another extraordinary scene, the former secretary of state Rex Tillerson describes joining a meeting between Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu in May 2017 in Jerusalem, in which the Israeli leader showed the US president a videotape supposedly showing the Palestinian leader, Mahmoud Abbas, inciting violence against Jews.

Tillerson believed the tape had been faked or manipulated, splicing together words and sentences out of context, but Trump - who had previously been distrustful of Netanyahu - was totally convinced. The next day in Bethlehem, Trump hurled abuse at Abbas, calling him a liar and a murderer, and he severed diplomatic relations and financial support for the Palestinians soon after.

Tillerson came to the conclusion that “Netanyahu had manufactured the tape to counter any pro-Palestinian sentiments that were surfacing”.

The president also expressed pride in his relationship with Turkey’s leader, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who in October 2019 persuaded Trump to announce a troop withdrawal from north-eastern Syria, abandoning America’s Kurdish allies, who had taken the lead in the fight against Isis.

The decision was the last straw for an outraged Mattis.

“When I was basically directed to do something that I thought went beyond stupid to felony stupid, strategically jeopardizing our place in the world, and everything else. That’s when I quit,” the former defence secretary said.

Mattis predicted Trump’s impact on the country would be lasting.

“This degradation of the American experiment is real. This is tangible. Truth is no longer governing the White House statements,” he said.

Coats, the former intelligence director, fired in July 2019 while he was playing golf on one of Trump’s courses, came to a similar conclusion.

“To him, a lie is not a lie. It’s just what he thinks,” Coats said. “He doesn’t know the difference between the truth and a lie.”

Movies World WAR 3? -Escalating Trump Iran Conflict

Could The Escalating Trump Iran Conflict Turn Into World War 3?

•5 Dec 2020 The Sun UK

60km from Tehran, at around 2pm on Friday, 27th November, a black sedan car was hit by an unknown object.

Mohsen Fakhrizadeh climbed out of his bullet-proof car to inspect the damage, and it was at this moment a remote-controlled machine gun mounted on a blue pickup truck began firing at Fakhrizadeh (Fakrisadeh) and his convoy.

The car then exploded, and Iran’s top nuclear scientist was dead.

This is how the Iranian media reported the assassination of one of the country’s most shadowy and unknown figures. Few images exist of Fakhrizadeh in the state media, and he has given even fewer public speeches. However, this is not to underestimate the nuclear scientist’s importance;

Western intelligence services view him as one of the most dangerous men involved in Iran’s quest for a nuclear weapon. But this latest bloodshed is much bigger than one man.

The attack is just one of a string of strikes on Iranian officials in recent years which have infuriated the Islamic Republic. 11 months ago the second most powerful man in Iran and the head of the elite Quds Force, Qasem Soleimani, was killed in a US airstrike.

Although it is currently unknown who is behind the latest assassination.......

In response to the remote killing, Tehran has vowed to ramp up their nuclear enrichment programme and said they will avenge what they call an act of “state terror”.

Update re: IRAN Revolutionary Guards Colonel Assassinated

US and Iran Seek to Break Impasse at Talks on Reviving Nuclear Deal

Critical talks with Iran to prevent the collapse of a nuclear deal are to resume in Vienna after five months.

Iran nuclear deal: What key players want from talks

BBC News 29 NOV 2021.

President Ebrahim Raisi (C) says Iran will not back down "in any way" in defending its interests

Officials will discuss the possible return of the US to the 2015 accord, which limited Iran's nuclear activities in return for the lifting of sanctions.

Iran has violated key commitments since then-President Donald Trump pulled out in 2018 and reinstated US sanctions.

Joe Biden is willing to lift them if Iran reverses the breaches. But it wants the US to make the first move.

Western diplomats have warned that time is running out to negotiate a solution because of the significant advances Iran has made in its uranium enrichment programme, which is a possible pathway to a nuclear bomb.

Iran insists that its nuclear programme is entirely peaceful.

The talks between Iran and the five countries still party to what is known formally as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)

China, France, Germany, Russia and the UK - began in the Austrian capital in April, with US representatives participating indirectly.

A senior US official told the New York Times that an agreement on which steps needed to be taken and when by Washington and Tehran was "largely complete" before the Iranian presidential election in June.

Ebrahim Raisi, a hardliner and strident critic of the West, won the race to succeed Hassan Rouhani, a moderate who negotiated the JCPOA with Barack Obama's administration.

Mr Raisi promised before taking office in August that he would not to let the talks drag on, but he did not agree to return to Vienna until earlier this month.

He has insisted that Iran's negotiators will not back down "in any way" in defending its interests.

Iran's Nuclear Programme: What's Been Happening at its Key Nuclear Sites?

The Iranian foreign ministry has said they want an "admission of culpability" from the US; the immediate lifting of all US sanctions; and a "guarantee" that no future US president would unilaterally abandon the deal again.

Mr Biden's special envoy for Iran, Robert Malley, has said the US is prepared to take all of the steps necessary to come back into compliance, including lifting the sanctions imposed by the Trump administration that crippled Iran's economy.

But Mr Malley has also warned Iran that the "window for negotiations... will not be open forever".

"This is not a chronological clock, it's a technological clock. At some point, the JCPOA will have been so eroded because Iran will have made advances that cannot be reversed, in which case we can't be talking - you can't revive a dead corpse," he said at a briefing last month.

The US secretary of state has said "every option is on the table" if Iran does not negotiate in good faith and put its nuclear programme "back in the box".

A major focus of the JCPOA was Iran's production of enriched uranium, which is widely used as fuel for nuclear power plants but can also be used in nuclear weapons.

Iran agreed to limits on the amount of the material that it could stockpile; the level of purity; the number and type of centrifuge machines that could be used to carry out enrichment; and the locations where it could take place.

It began gradually breaching those restrictions in 2019 in retaliation for the sanctions reinstated by Mr Trump, who called the JCPOA "defective at its core" and wanted to compel Iranian leaders to negotiate a replacement.

Iran has now amassed a stockpile of enriched uranium that is many times larger than permitted, including some that is 60% purity - a short technical step away from the 90% needed to make a weapon.

It has also installed hundreds of advance centrifuges; resumed enrichment at previously-converted underground facility; and taken steps to produce enriched uranium metal, which is a key material in nuclear bombs.

Inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency have also had their access to Iranian nuclear facilities significantly curtailed.

More Snow on The Ground in Vienna Than Optimism

Analysis box by James Landale, Diplomatic correspondent

The mood music surrounding these talks is not great.

Iran's new government has dragged its feet, taking almost six months to come back to Vienna. It arrives at the table laden with new, maximalist demands. It's not going to talk about its nuclear activities, Iran says. These talks should be all about the US lifting sanctions. All of them. Immediately. Verifiably. With guarantees a future US government would not pull out of the deal.

The US and other signatories to the original nuclear deal are in turn demanding the talks pick up where they left off in June, when both sides expressed confidence an agreement was possible.

And if not, if Iran refuses to talk about its accelerated nuclear programme, then American diplomats talk of "other options", "other tools" for preventing Iran getting a nuclear weapon - a euphemism for allowing Israel to launch military or cyber attacks on Iranian facilities.

The bottom line is that Western powers do not yet know the intentions of this new government in Tehran: is it serious about negotiating a deal and agreeing the compromises that would be necessary?

Or is it playing for time to enrich more uranium, which potentially could be used in a nuclear weapon that Iran insists it does not want?

Much depends on the answer to that question.

These talks could drag on for some time, and as of now in Vienna there's more snow on the ground than optimism.

Iran-Backed Houthi Rebels Launch Kamikaze DRONE’ Attack on Abu Dhabi

18 Jan 2022 The Sun

A DRONE attack on Abu Dhabi has led to three oil tankers exploding and a fire at the airport, police have said.

Responsibility for the attack, which killed three people, has been claimed by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels who are reportedly equipped with 'kamikaze drones' supplied by Tehran.

Abu Dhabi police said three fuel tankers had exploded in the industrial Musaffah area near storage facilities of oil firm ADNOC

A fire also broke out at a construction site at Abu Dhabi International Airport.

Police in the United Arab Emirates identified the dead as two Indian nationals and one Pakistani.

"Initial investigations found parts of a small plane that could possibly be a drone at both sites that could have caused the explosion and the fire," the police said in a statement on state news agency WAM.

The UAE has been at war in Yemen since early 2015, and was a key member of the Saudi-led coalition that attacked the Houthis after the group overran the capital.

The Houthis ousted the internationally recognised government from the capital, Sanaa, in late 2014, prompting the coalition to intervene.

Senior Houthi figure Mohamed al-Bukhaiti said the strike followed a deal between UAE and Saudi Arabi and promised there would be more attacks.king news videos and explainers from the UK and around the world

Colonel in Iran Revolutionary Guards Assassinated

A colonel in Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) has been shot dead in a rare assassination in Tehran.

BBC 23 MAY 2022

Family gather around the car that Colonel Sayad Khodai was assassinated in

Colonel Sayad Khodai

Two gunmen on a motorbike are reported to have shot Colonel Sayad Khodai five times in a car outside his home.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility for Sunday's attack, and a manhunt is under way for the gunmen.

It is the biggest security breach in Iran since 2020 when a leading nuclear scientist was killed.

Images from the scene show a bloodied man slumped over in a car with his seatbelt still on.

Col Khodai was a senior member of the elite Quds Force, a shadowy external arm of the IRGC that carries out operations abroad. The United States accuses the force of supporting terrorist organisations and being responsible for attacks across the Middle East.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said the colonel was assassinated by "sworn enemies" of Iran who are "the terrorist agents affiliated with the global arrogance" - a reference to the US and its allies - and said other countries that "claim to be fighting terrorism are regrettably silent and support it".

Previously, Iranian officials have accused Israel of being behind such high profile assassinations.

As news of the assassination broke, Iranian state news reported that Revolutionary Guards had exposed and arrested a network of Israeli spies. There has been no official comment from Israel.

Khodai is the second high profile Quds Force leader to be killed in recent years.

In 2020, Iran's most powerful military commander, Gen Qasem Soleimani, was killed by a US air strike in Iraq. He spearheaded Iranian military operations in the Middle East as head of the Quds Force, and his death marked a major escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran.

In the same year, nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was shot dead in Tehran. Fakhrizadeh - who was so important he was always accompanied by several bodyguards - played a crucial role in Iran's nuclear programme but the government insists its nuclear activities are entirely peaceful.

Iran accused Israel of using a remote-controlled weapon to kill him.

Iran Close to Completing Nuclear Weapons Programme

Iran Close To Getting Nuclear Bomb? Why US May Have To Revive 2015 Iran Nuclear Deal

The Daily Telegraph UK 12 JUN 2022

Iran is getting ‘dangerously’ close to completing its nuclear weapons programme and will soon have a nuclear bomb in its arsenal, Israel’s prime minister has warned.

Bennett’s comments follow months of deadlock over stalled talks aimed at restoring the Islamic Republic’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.

Tensions remain high across the wider Middle East over the accord’s collapse as U.S. sanctions and rising global food prices choke Iran’s ailing economy, putting further pressure on its government and its people.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph this week, Bennett warned that Iran is ‘enriching uranium at an unprecedented rate and moving dangerously close to getting their hands on nuclear weapons.’

Non-proliferation experts warn Iran has enriched uranium at levels over 60 percent purity – a short technical step from weapons-grade levels of 90 percent – to make one nuclear weapon should it decide to do so.

Iran is reportedly just a month away from having enough material for a single nuclear weapon. United Nations’ atomic inspection group claims Iran is now capable of producing fuel for an atomic bomb.

Iran is ‘dangerously’ close to completing its nuclear weapons programme and will soon have a nuclear bomb in its arsenal, Israel’s prime minister has warned.

Naftali Bennett called on Britain and its Western allies to stand up to the Middle-Eastern country and to continue putting pressure on its nuclear efforts.

Enriching uranium at 60% purity, which is just below bomb grade, has raised Iran’s nuclear capability. A UN report says that fuel for a second weapon could be produced in less than 3 months, and a third in less than 5 months.

Oh Crap! re: IRAN PRISON FIRE- Shots & Sirens at Notorious Detention Centre

IRAN: Ex-Child Bride Among Three Women Executed in One Day - Report

Iranian authorities put three women to death on Wednesday for murdering their husbands, a human rights charity says.

BBC News 29 JUL 2022.

Protesters in London campaign against Iran's use of the death penalty in 2020

According to the Iran Human Rights Group they were among 32 people executed in the past week alone.

A former child bride, convicted of later killing the man she had married at the age of 15, was among them.

Authorities are believed to have substantially stepped up their use of the death penalty, executing twice as many people so far this year than last.

Rights groups report that Iran also executes more women than any other country, the majority of whom are thought to have been found guilty of killing their husbands.

On Wednesday, the Iran Human Rights Group says former child bride Soheila Abadi was hanged in prison after being convicted of killing her husband after marrying him 10 years previously when she was 15 years old.

The sentencing court reportedly said the motive for the murder had been "family disputes."

Two other women executed on Wednesday had also been convicted of murdering their husbands, the group said.

Activists say many of the cases involve accusations of domestic violence but that Iranian courts frequently do not take that into account.

Precise figures on execution numbers are not available as Iranian authorities do not officially announce every case where the death penalty has been carried out.

According to a research published in April by two rights groups, only 16.5% of executions believed to have been carried out in Iran last year were announced by officials.

---Alarming rise in Iran executions in 2021

Reports this year suggest the use of the death penalty has spiked even further since.

Human rights group Amnesty International this week accused Iran of having embarked upon a "horrific" execution spree in recent months, reportedly putting more than 250 people to death in the first six months of 2022 - more than double the number executed over the equivalent period in the previous year.

"The state machinery is carrying out killings on a mass scale across the country in an abhorrent assault on the right to life," said Diana Eltahawy, deputy regional director at Amnesty International.

Some of those convicted have been put to death in mass executions, the rights group reports, including a dozen people in one prison on 15 June and the same number in a separate prison on 6 June.

Ethnic minorities are also overrepresented in the statistics.

Despite making up around 5% of Iran's general population, members of the Baluchi minority made up more than one in four of those believed by Amnesty International to have been executed so far this year.

Update re: IRAN PRISON FIRE- Shots & Sirens at Notorious Detention Centre

Iran Headscarf: Raisi Says Police Custody Death Must be Investigated

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has said the death of a woman in police custody must be investigated after it sparked widespread protests.

BBC News 23 SEP 2022.

Tehran has seen angry protests

Speaking on a visit to the UN General Assembly in New York, Mr Raisi accused the West of hypocrisy for raising concerns over Mahsa Amini's death.

She died hours after morality police arrested her for allegedly breaking headscarf rules.

At least 17 people have died in the worst unrest in Iran for years.

Ms Amini, a Kurdish woman from the north-western city of Saqez, died in hospital in Tehran on Friday following three days in a coma.

Mr Raisi repeated a coroner's conclusion that the young woman had not been beaten. Iranian police said she had suffered "sudden heart failure".

Protesters reject the state's conclusions, pointing to reports that officers beat Ms Amini's head with a baton and banged her head against one of their vehicles.

The hard-line president warned the protesters that the "acts of chaos" were not acceptable.

He accused Western nations of "double standards", pointing to killings by police in the United Kingdom and the US.

"Every day in different countries, including the United States, we see men and women dying in police encounters, but there is no sensitivity about the cause and dealing with this violence," he added.

His shot back at the West came hours after the US announced sanctions to be placed on Iranian morality police.

The US treasury department said the sanctions were for the abuse of Iranian women and the violation of protesters' rights.

Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard, which has close ties to the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, called on the judiciary to prosecute "those who spread false news and rumours" as part of apparent efforts to halt the momentum of the protests. The Guards also expressed sympathy for Ms Amini's family.

The protests have reached about 80 cities and towns. One person told BBC Persian her neighbourhood resembled a battlefield.

How Mahsa Amini became a symbol of defiance in Iran

In an interview with BBC Persian, Ms Amini's father Amjad said he was not allowed by authorities to see all of her body after it had been wrapped for burial, when just her face and feet were visible.

"There were bruises on her feet," he said, adding that he had asked doctors to examine them but had never heard back.

Mr Amini also rejected claims from the interior minister and Tehran's director of forensic medicine that his daughter had had pre-existing health problems.

"They are lying," he said. "She has not been to any hospital at all in the past 22 years, other than for a few cold-related sicknesses."

'I wanted to see my daughter but they didn't let me in'

The first protests took place after the funeral, when women were filmed waving their headscarves in the air and shouting "death to the dictator" - a chant often directed at the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Similar demonstrations were staged by students at several universities in Tehran, before the protests started spreading rapidly across the country.

"Now, we have seen so many men joining in and it has moved on from a protest against the compulsory hijab. It's now against the whole existence of the Islamic Republic," BBC Persian's Rana Rahimpour told the Today programme.

She added: "This is most serious challenge to the Islamic leadership of Iran that we have seen here in recent years."

The deadliest unrest has been concentrated in Iran's Kurdish-populated north-west, where Ms Amini lived.

Internet-monitoring group NetBlocks has reported that Iran is now subject to the most severe internet restrictions seen since mass anti-government erupted in November 2019. Mobile phone networks were largely shut down, internet service was disrupted during protests, and access to Instagram and WhatsApp were being restricted, it said

Protests Spread in Iran as President Raisi Vows to Crack Down

Demonstrations that began with death of Mahsa Amini while detained by morality police pose biggest threat to regime in 13 years

BBC 25 Sep 2022

Crowds clash with police in Tehran on 21 September.

Iran’s president has vowed to “deal decisively” with protests that are gathering momentum across much of the country one week after the death of a woman in custody who had been detained by the morality police.

Demonstrations have spread to most of Iran’s 31 provinces and almost all urban centres, pitting anti-government demonstrators against regime forces, including the military, and posing the most serious test to the hardline state’s authority in more than 13 years.

President Ebrahim Raisi on Saturday blamed conspirators for inciting unrest and pledged to crack down on “those who oppose the country’s security and tranquility”.

Up to 35 people have been killed during clashes with security forces, according to Iran. Iranian officials say five security personnel have also died, trying to quell outrage surrounding the death of Mahsa Amini, 22. But activists say the death toll is at least 50 and likely to be even higher.

An enforcer of fundamentalist views throughout his career, Raisi has been regarded as an unlikely figure to quell Iran’s restive streets, or to cede to demands for more civil freedoms.

His defiance is likely to increase the likelihood of a further escalation in towns and cities where demonstrators have been increasingly taking the fight to security forces in scenes rarely seen in Iran.

The demonstrations have evoked images of an anti-government protest in 2009, known as the green revolution, that followed contentious presidential elections and marked the last time citizens faced off against security forces on a large scale.

“The main difference between the current protest compared to the green movement in 2009 is that now people are fighting back; they are not afraid of the brutal regime,” said Sima Sabet, an Iranian journalist and presenter on the Iran International TV station.

“Demonstrators are now burning ambulances because the government is using ambulances to move their security forces not to rescue people. The protesters are now using different tactics; they move between all cities and make it hard for security forces to control all locations.”

Firuzeh Mahmoudi, executive director of human rights NGO United for Iran, said the recent unrest followed months of Iranians being prepared to hold smaller protests on an array of issues: “The uprising in 2009 in some ways was more expansive in certain cities,” she said. “We had millions of people protesting in certain cities during the biggest day of that protest. It was the biggest thing since the [1979] revolution. They did not see it coming and were very surprised.

Important re: IRANs' 3 NEW DEATH Sentences for LGBT Activists & Unrest

Evin Prison Fire: Gun Shots and Sirens Heard at Notorious Detention Centre

A fire has broken out at Iran's notorious Evin prison, with footage posted online showing flames and smoke billowing from the area.

BBC 16 OCT 2022

Gun shots and alarms have been reported as coming from the jail, the primary site for detaining political prisoners.

State media say calm has been restored to the prison, and has blamed "criminal elements" for the blaze.

The fire comes as Iran continues to be rocked by its most intense unrest in decades.

Protests have been taking place across the country once again on Saturday.

They first erupted last month when anger over the death in police custody of 22-year-old Kurdish Iranian Mahsa Amini boiled over. Officials say she died from an underlying health condition, but her family say she died after being beaten by morality police.

It is unclear what was the cause of the fire at Evin prison, but there are further reports that special forces have been deployed to the area. Firefighters are at the scene, according to state media.

A witness told Reuters news agency that "families of prisoners have gathered in front of the main door".

They added: "I can see fire and smoke. Lots of special forces. Ambulances are here too."

As well as political prisoners, journalists, and many dual and foreign nationals are also imprisoned in Evin.

British-Iranian dual nationals Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Anoosheh Ashoori were both held on spying charges, which they denied, before their release earlier this year. They were imprisoned for six and five years respectively.

The prison has long been criticised by Western rights groups. Human Rights Watch has accused authorities at the prison of using threats of torture and of indefinite imprisonment, as well as lengthy interrogations and denial of medical care for detainees.

IRAN Protests: Fresh Clashes in Zahedan

Intense clashes have taken place in the Iranian city of Zahedan, as anti-government unrest grips the country.

BBC News 29 OCT 2022.

Social media footage showed security forces firing into crowds, four weeks after dozens were killed in protests there over allegations a teenage girl was raped by a senior policeman.

State media said one person was killed and 14 injured in Friday's violence.

Iran has also been rocked by wider protests sparked by the death of a young Kurdish woman in police custody.

The unrest is the most serious challenge to the Islamic Republic.

On Friday, crowds in Zahedan, capital of the Sistan Baluchistan province, took to the streets despite the announcement that two senior police officials had been sacked over the deadly 30 September clampdown.

Video sent to the BBC Persian Service shows floors of buildings washed with blood, as protesters shout "Death to Khamenei" - a reference to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

One video shows one of the latest casualties, apparently a child.

"They fired at a 12-year-old," one man shouts as another strokes the cheek of the boy shot dead.

It is not clear how many people died on 30 September - some reports by human rights organisations have put the number at more than 90.

It is rare for Iranian authorities to sack senior officials involved in suppressing protest against the country's top leadership - but even that measure appears to have failed to stem the unrest.

Sistan Baluchistan province, which borders both Pakistan and Afghanistan, has a sizeable Sunni Muslim population. Iran is a majority Shia country.

Authorities have said the security forces were attacked by armed Baluchi separatists - something the imam of the city's biggest mosque has denied.

The protests in Zahedan come as Iran has been gripped by the reaction to the death of Mahsa Amini, 22, on 16 September.

She had been detained three days earlier by the morality police in Tehran and fell into a coma after collapsing at a detention centre.

The BBC has mapped how the death of Mahsa Amini sparked widespread unrest in Iran

She was arrested for allegedly wearing her Islamic headscarf "improperly".

There were reports that officers had beaten her with a baton and banged her head against a vehicle, but police denied she had been mistreated and said she had suffered a heart attack.

Norway-based Iran Human Rights says at least 234 protesters, including 29 children, have been killed by security forces in crackdowns around Iran so far. Iran's leaders have portrayed the unrest as "riots" instigated by foreigners.

The BBC and other independent media are banned from reporting from inside Iran, making state media and other reports hard to verify. Authorities have also heavily disrupted the internet, hampering the ability of protesters to post on social media.

Wave Strengthens

Analysis by Lyse Doucet, Chief Correspondent

The Islamic Republic of Iran has seen protests before. But not like this.

One month ago, dozens of people were killed in Zahedan.

It was the bloodiest day yet in what have been six weeks of protest. But that hasn't deterred demonstrators in this city or in all of Iran's 31 provinces.

In addition to those killed across Iran, more than 13,000 have been detained so far. The UN has expressed concern that the authorities are now refusing to release some of the bodies of those who have died - they know every new death provokes yet another outpouring of anger and grief.

The authorities are still trying to dismiss and discredit them as "rioters influenced by foreigners".

It's hard to square that with extraordinary images of teenage schoolgirls rejecting obligatory headscarves, of women of all ages walking bare-headed in public spaces.

It's hard, too, to see Iran returning to days where so-called morality police can police women's dress the way they've done for decades.

This is now about more, much more, than what women wear.

In the past, major uprisings have fizzled out, or were forcibly suppressed, after months of unrest. But, with every week, this wave seems to strengthen.

The full force of Iran's security apparatus has yet to be unleashed. The authorities will do whatever it takes to preserve the Islamic Republic.

But Iran's protesters, especially a new generation of women and men, also seem ready to do whatever it takes to change their lives, and much more.

Iran Protests: Tehran Court Sentences First Person to Death Over Unrest

A court in Iran has issued the first death sentence to a person arrested for taking part in the protests that have engulfed the country, state media say.

A Revolutionary Court in Tehran found the defendant, who was not named, had set fire to a government facility and was guilty of "enmity against God".

Another court jailed five people for between five to 10 years on national security and public order charges.

A human rights group warned authorities might be planning "hasty executions".

At least 20 people are currently facing charges punishable by death, Norway-based Iran Human Rights said, citing official reports.

Its director, Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, called on the international community to take urgent action and "strongly warn the Islamic Republic of the consequences of executing protesters".

Watch: The protests currently sweeping the country have their roots in changes made after the 1979 revolution

Protests against Iran's clerical establishment erupted two months ago after the death in custody of a young woman detained by morality police for allegedly breaking the strict hijab rules.

They are reported to have spread to 140 cities and towns and evolved into the most significant challenge to the Islamic Republic in over a decade.

At least 326 protesters, including 43 children and 25 women, have been killed in a violent crackdown by security forces, according to Iran Human Rights.

The Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), which is also based outside the country, has put the death toll at 339 and said another 15,300 protesters have detained. It has also reported the deaths of 39 security personnel.

Iran's leaders have portrayed the protests as "riots" instigated by the country's foreign enemies.

Last week, judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei declared that "key perpetrators" should be identified as soon as possible and handed sentences that would have a deterrent effect on others.

He warned that "rioters" could be charged with "moharebeh" (enmity against God), "efsad fil-arz" (corruption on Earth) and "baghy" (armed rebellion) - all of which can carry the death penalty in Iran's Sharia-based legal system.

Those possessing and using a weapon or firearm, disrupting national security, or killing someone could receive "qisas" (retaliation in kind), he said, apparently responding to a call for retributive justice from 272 of the 290 members of Iran's parliament.

More than 2,000 people have already been charged with participating in the "recent riots", according to judiciary figures.

On Sunday, local media cited judiciary officials as saying that 164 had been charged in the southern province of Hormozgan, another 276 in the central province of Markazi, and 316 in neighbouring Isfahan province.

Iran Sentences Two LGBT Activists to Death

BBC News 14 NOV 2022.

Two LGBT activists have been sentenced to death in Iran, rights groups say.

A court in Urmia found Zahra Seddiqi Hamedani, 31, and Elham Choubdar, 24, guilty of "corruption on Earth".

The Hengaw Organization for Human Rights reported that they were accused of promoting homosexuality, promoting Christianity and communicating with media opposed to the Islamic Republic.

Iran's judiciary later confirmed the sentences, but said they were connected to human trafficking and not activism.

"Contrary to the news published in cyberspace and the rumours that have been spread, these two individuals have been accused of deceiving women and young girls and trafficking them to one of the countries of the region," the judiciary's news outlet Mizan reported.

Norway-registered Hengaw said Seddiqi Hamedani, also known as Sareh, was from the predominantly Kurdish town of Naqadeh in West Azerbaijan province, which borders both Turkey and Iraq.

Amnesty International previously described her as a "gender non-conforming human rights defender" who it said had been detained "solely in connection with her real or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity as well as her social media posts and statements in defence of [LGBT] rights".

It reported that she was arrested in October 2021 by the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) while attempting to cross into Turkey to seek asylum.

It cited her as saying that she was forcibly disappeared for 53 days, during which an IRGC agent allegedly subjected her to "intense interrogations accompanied by verbal abuse" and "threatened to execute or otherwise harm her and take away the custody of her two young children".

This January, Seddiqi Hamedani was brought before a prosecutor in Urmia, the largest city in West Azerbaijan, and told that she was accused of "spreading corruption on Earth", including through promoting homosexuality, communicating with hostile media and promoting Christianity, according to Amnesty.

The group said the first two accusations stemmed from her public defence of LGBT rights on social media and her appearance in a May 2021 BBC documentary about abuses that LGBT people were suffering in Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region, where she had been living.

Under Iranian law, same-sex sexual conduct is a criminal offence, with punishments ranging from flogging to the death penalty.

The accusation of promoting Christianity was for wearing a cross necklace and attending a house church in Iran several years ago, Amnesty added.

Citizens who are not recognised as Christians, Zoroastrians, or Jews may not engage in public religious expression in Iran.

Before she attempted to leave Iran, Seddiqi Hamedani recorded a video in which she said: "I want you to know how much pressure we LGBT people endure. We risk our lives for our emotions, but we will find our true selves... I hope the day will come when we can all live in freedom in our country."

"I am journeying toward freedom now... If I don't make it, I will have given my life for this cause."

Hengaw provided no details about Elham Choubdar other than saying that she was from Urmia.

The Germany-based Iranian Lesbian and Transgender Network (6-Rang) also confirmed the death sentences for the two activists and called on foreign government to put pressure on Iran to release them.

"This is the first time that a woman has been sentenced to death in Iran for her sexual orientation," spokeswoman Shadi Amin told AFP news agency.

UN Hold Special Session on Iran at Human Rights Council

Hundreds Dead in Iran Protests Including Children, Says UN

UN fact-finding mission to investigate crackdown

BBC News 25 NOV

The UN Human Rights Council has voted to set up a fact-finding mission to investigate the deadly crackdown on anti-government protests in Iran.

Western diplomats said an independent probe would hold those responsible for abuses to account and send a powerful message of support to women in Iran.

Iran described calls for the mission as an arrogant political ploy.

Opening the session in Geneva, UN human rights chief Volker Turk warned that Iran was in a "full-fledged" crisis.

He said it was "unacceptable" that more than 300 people had been killed and 14,000 others arrested over the past nine weeks.

The women-led protests erupted following the death in custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was detained by morality police for breaking Iran's strict rules on hijabs, or headscarves.

They have since spread to more than 150 cities and 140 universities in all 31 of the country's provinces and are seen as one of the most serious challenges to the Islamic Republic since the 1979 revolution.

The vote on the proposal to establish a fact-finding mission was not as close as expected, with 25 states in favour, six against, and 16 abstaining.

A last-minute amendment proposed by China that would have removed a reference to the mission was also soundly defeated.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken praised the result, saying it would "help ensure that those engaged in the ongoing violent suppression of Iranian people are identified and their actions documented".

BBC Geneva correspondent Imogen Foulkes says it is unlikely that Iran's government will allow the investigating team into the country. However, she adds, UN investigations into Syria and Myanmar have been successfully carried out remotely.

Iranian authorities have portrayed the protests as "riots" instigated by the country's enemies

Before the vote, Mr Turk told the council that he backed an independent investigation into alleged abuses because domestic probes by Iranian authorities had failed to meet international standards.

He said it had pained him to see what was happening in Iran, recalling "the images of children killed, of women beaten in the streets, of people sentenced to death".

"The unnecessary and disproportionate use of force must come to an end.

"The old methods and the fortress mentality of those who wield power simply don't work. In fact, they only aggravate the situation," he added.

"We are now in a full-fledged human rights crisis."

The UN human rights chief accused Iranian security forces of showing "blatant disregard of international rules" by using live ammunition, birdshot and other metal pellets, tear gas and batons against unarmed demonstrators and bystanders who posed no threat to life.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock told the council that Iran had repeatedly ignored calls to respect human rights and stop its crackdown, adding: "The only answer we received was more violence, more death."

"If we don't collect the evidence today, if we don't support this resolution, justice will never come to the victims."

Iranian representative Khadijeh Karimi addresses the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland (24 November 2022 Tehran's representative at the Geneva meeting wore a black full-body cloak known as a chador

But Iran's representative, Khadijeh Karimi, said Western countries "lack[ed] the moral credibility to preach".

"Reducing the common cause of human rights to a tool for political purposes of specific groups of Western countries is appalling and disgraceful," she said.

China's ambassador, Chen Xu, warned against "turning human rights into a tool to intervene into other countries' internal affairs".

In a separate development on Thursday, Iranian semi-official media reported that the footballer Voria Ghafouri had been arrested on suspicion of "anti-state propaganda".

The hard-line Fars news agency said the 35-year-old former member of Iran's national team had criticised the government and supported "rioters" - a term authorities have used to portray the protesters.

Iran to Disband Morality Police Amid Ongoing Protests, Says Attorney General

Iran's morality police, which is tasked with enforcing the country's Islamic dress code, is being disbanded, the country's attorney general says.

BBC 5 DEC 2022

Mohammad Jafar Montazeri's comments, yet to be confirmed by other agencies, were made at an event on Sunday.

Iran has seen months of protests over the death of a young woman in custody.

Mahsa Amini had been detained by the morality police for allegedly breaking strict rules on head coverings.

Mr Montazeri was at a religious conference when he was asked if the morality police was being disbanded.

"The morality police had nothing to do with the judiciary and have been shut down from where they were set up," he said.

Control of the force lies with the interior ministry and not with the judiciary.

On Saturday, Mr Montazeri also told the Iranian parliament the law that requires women to wear hijabs would be looked at.

Even if the morality police is shut down this does not mean the decades-old law will be changed.

Women-led protests, labelled "riots" by the authorities, have swept Iran since 22-year-old Amini died in custody on 16 September, three days after her arrest by the morality police in Tehran.

Her death was the catalyst for the unrest but it also follows discontent over poverty, unemployment, inequality, injustice and corruption.

'A revolution is what we have'

If confirmed, the scrapping of the morality police would be a concession but there are no guarantees it would be enough to halt the protests, which have seen demonstrators burn their head coverings.

"Just because the government has decided to dismantle morality police it doesn't mean the protests are ending," one Iranian woman told the BBC World Service's Newshour programme.

"Even the government saying the hijab is a personal choice is not enough. People know Iran has no future with this government in power. We will see more people from different factions of Iranian society, moderate and traditional, coming out in support of women to get more of their rights back."

Another woman said: "We, the protesters, don't care about no hijab no more. We've been going out without it for the past 70 days.

"A revolution is what we have. Hijab was the start of it and we don't want anything, anything less, but death for the dictator and a regime change."

Iranian state media pushed back on the claim the country's morality police is being disbanded, according to CNN.

State television channel Al-Alam reportedly said foreign media were portraying Mr Montazeri's comments as "the Islamic Republic retreating from the issue of hijab and modesty and claim that it is due to the recent riots".

"But no official of the Islamic Republic of Iran has said that the Guidance Patrol has been shut."

Iran has had various forms of "morality police" since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, but the latest version - known formally as the Gasht-e Ershad - is currently the main agency tasked enforcing Iran's Islamic code of conduct.

They began their patrols in 2006 to enforce the dress code which also requires women to wear long clothes and forbids shorts, ripped jeans and other clothes deemed immodest.

Iran: Dual National Sentenced to Death For Spying For MI6

Alireza Akbari: Iran Preparing to Execute British Citizen

BBC News.12 JAN 2023

The family of a British-Iranian dual national sentenced to death in Iran have told BBC Persian that authorities are preparing to execute him.

Mr Akbari alleges in the audio message that he was "interrogated and tortured" by intelligence agents "for more than 3,500 hours".

Alireza Akbari's wife, Maryam, said the family had been asked to go to his prison for a "final visit" and that he had been moved to solitary confinement.

The ex-deputy Iranian defence minister was arrested in 2019 and convicted of spying for the UK, which he denied.

The UK urged Iran to halt the planned execution and immediately release him.

"This is a politically motivated act by a barbaric regime that has total disregard for human life," Foreign Secretary James Cleverly tweeted.

Earlier, a Foreign Office spokesperson told the BBC that it was supporting Mr Akbari's family and had repeatedly raised his case with Iranian authorities.

It has requested urgent consular access, but Iran's government does not recognise dual nationality for Iranians.

BBC Persian also broadcast an audio message on Wednesday from Mr Akbari in which he says he was tortured and forced to confess on camera to crimes he did not commit.

He says that he was living abroad a few years ago when he was invited to visit Iran at the request of a top Iranian diplomat who was involved in nuclear talks with world powers.

Once there, he adds, he was accused of obtaining top secret intelligence from the secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Ali Shamkhani, "in exchange for a bottle of perfume and a shirt".

Mr Akbari served under Mr Shamkhani when the latter was defence minister during the presidency of Mohammad Khatami, a reformist who was in office for two terms between 1997 and 2005.

"During all those 3,500 hours, which took more than 10 months, they were recording my confessions with 10 cameras to make their Hollywood-style film," he says, adding that he was also given "psychedelic drugs".

"By using physiological and psychological methods, they broke my will, drove me to madness and forced me to do whatever they wanted. By the force of gun and death threats they made me confess to false and corrupt claims."

He also accuses Iran of seeking "to take revenge on the UK by executing me".

Hours after the audio message was broadcast, the Iranian judiciary's Mizan news agency confirmed for the first time that Mr Akbari had been found guilty of espionage, and that the Supreme Court had rejected his appeal.

It cited Iran's intelligence ministry as saying that Mr Akbari had been "one of the most important infiltrators of the country's sensitive and strategic centres" for the UK's Secret Intelligence Service, better known as MI6, and that he had been "compiling and consciously transferring sensitive information".

The ministry claimed that its agents uncovered Mr Akbari's spying by feeding him false information.

At the end of November, Iranian state media reported that authorities had hanged four men convicted of "co-operating" with Israeli intelligence.

Four other men have been executed since December after being sentenced to death in connection with the anti-government protests engulfing the country.

Alicia Kearns, chair of the UK House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, said the news from Mr Akbari's family was "awful".

"Unfortunately, it is another horrifying example of the Iranian regime - because they feel they are cornered, because there is such significant pressure from sanctions on them - weaponising British nationals and industrialising hostage taking," she told BBC Radio 4's PM programme.

She speculated that Mr Akbari might have been singled out by hard-liners in the establishment in order to undermine Mr Shamkhani, who she described as a "moderate voice... [who] has been calling for discussions and dialogue" in response to the current protests. Iran's current leaders have portrayed them as "riots" and cracked down on them with lethal force.

Iran has arrested dozens of Iranians with dual nationality or foreign permanent residency in recent years, mostly on spying and national security charges.

British-Iranian citizens Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Anoosheh Ashoori were released and allowed to leave Iran last year after the UK settled a long-standing debt owed to Iran.

However, at least two other British-Iranians remain in detention beside Mr Akbari, including Morad Tahbaz, who also holds US citizenship

Alireza Akbari: Iran Executes British-Iranian Dual National, State Media Says

British-Iranian dual national Alireza Akbari, who was sentenced to death in Iran, has been executed, Iranian state media says.

BBC 14 JAN 2023

Mr Akbari's family had been asked to go to his prison for a "final visit" on Wednesday and his wife said he had been moved to solitary confinement.

The ex-deputy Iranian defence minister was arrested in 2019 and convicted of spying for the UK, which he denied.

The UK had urged Iran to halt the execution and immediately release him.

On Friday, UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly warned that "Iran must not follow through with their brutal threat of execution".

"This is a politically motivated act by a barbaric regime that has total disregard for human life," Mr Cleverly tweeted on Wednesday.

The Iranian judiciary's official news outlet Mizan also reported that Alireza Akbari had been hanged, without giving an exact date for the execution.

Iran posted a video of Mr Akbari this week showing what appeared to be forced confessions.

BBC Persian broadcast an audio message on Wednesday from Mr Akbari in which he said he was tortured and forced to confess on camera to crimes he did not commit.

The United States had joined calls for Iran not to execute Mr Akbari - US diplomat Vedant Patel said "his execution would be unconscionable".

Mr Patel said on Friday that "the charges against Alireza Akbari and his sentencing were politically motivated".

Earlier this week, a UK Foreign Office spokesperson told the BBC that it was supporting Mr Akbari's family and had repeatedly raised his case with Iranian authorities.

It had requested urgent consular access, but Iran's government does not recognise dual nationality for Iranians.

In Mr Akbari's audio message he said that he was living abroad a few years ago when he was invited to visit Iran at the request of a top Iranian diplomat who was involved in nuclear talks with world powers.

He also accused Iran of seeking "to take revenge on the UK by executing me".

Hours after the audio message was broadcast, the Mizan news agency confirmed for the first time that Mr Akbari had been found guilty of espionage, and that the Supreme Court had rejected his appeal.

Ties between the UK and Iran have deteriorated in recent months since the UK imposed sanctions on Iran's morality police and other top security figures, in response to the country's violent crackdown on anti-government protesters.

Iran has arrested dozens of Iranians with dual nationality or foreign permanent residency in recent years, mostly on spying and national security charges.

British-Iranian citizens Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Anoosheh Ashoori were released and allowed to leave Iran last year after the UK settled a longstanding debt owed to Iran.

However, at least two other British-Iranians remain in detention, including Morad Tahbaz, who also holds US citizenship.

Iran Protests: Protesters Among Prisoners Pardoned by Leader

Irans' Supreme Leader Has Pardoned Tens of Thousands of Prisoners, Including Many Linked to Anti-Government Protests.

BBC 6 FEB 2023

State media reports the pardons by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei came with conditions.

The pardons come on the eve of the anniversary of the Islamic revolution in 1979.

Demonstrations erupted last September following the death in custody of a woman held by Iran's morality police.

Mahsa Amini, 22, was arrested for allegedly wearing her hijab, or headscarf, "improperly" - in violation of Iran's strict dress code for women.

Authorities have portrayed the protests - which are still continuing - as foreign-backed "riots" and at times have responded with lethal force.

Human rights groups say more than 500 demonstrators have been killed, including 70 minors, and around 20,000 have been arrested.

--- ONLY 15 minutes to defend yourself against the death penalty

Protests around the country have slowed considerably since the first of the hangings began.

Iran's state media says Ayatollah Khamenei's latest pardons came after a letter from the head of the judiciary framed many of those detained as young people who'd been led astray by foreign influence and propaganda.

The letter claims that a number of protesters had expressed regret and asked for forgiveness.

But those charged with more serious offences - such as spying for foreign agents, murder or destruction of state property - will not be pardoned.

The measure will also not extend to any dual nationals currently being detained.

Under Article 110 of the Iranian constitution, the country's supreme leader has the authority to issue pardons at the recommendation of the judiciary.

Sadeq Rahimi, the deputy judiciary chief, explained that those inmates who are qualified to be pardoned must pledge in writing that they regret what they have done otherwise, they will not be freed.

According to a report by the judiciary-affiliated news agency, Mizan, Mr Rahimi said that "for the first time ever" defendants who have not received any final verdict will be also pardoned.

Oslo-based group Iran Human Rights estimates that at least 100 people in detention are facing death sentences. It says that all defendants have been "deprived of the right to access their own lawyer, due process and fair trials".

Four have already been executed for crimes connected to the protests. In January two men were hanged for killing a member of Iran's security forces.

The pair launched an appeal before their deaths, saying they had been tortured.

Iran: 700 Schoolgirls Taken to Hospital After New Gas Poisonings

Schoolgirls in Iran hospitalised after suspected poison gas attacks

BBC 6 MAR 2023

700 girls from 26 schools in Iran are reportedly being treated for poisoning at hospitals after another wave of apparent toxic gas attacks.

More than 1,000 students have been affected since November. They have suffered respiratory problems, nausea, dizziness and fatigue.

Many Iranians suspect the poisonings are a deliberate attempt to force girls' schools to close.

But the government has not said whether it believes they are premeditated.

Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi, who has been tasked by the president with finding the "root cause" of the poisonings, on Wednesday dismissed as "false" a report by Fars news agency that three people had been arrested.

He also accused foreign-based media and "mercenary groups" of taking advantage of the situation to wage psychological war and worry people.

Some pupils and parents suggested that schoolgirls may have been targeted for taking part in recent anti-government protests.

At least 26 schools in five cities across Iran were affected by the latest gas poisonings, local media and activists said.

BBC Persian verified videos showing ambulances arriving at schools and students being treated in hospitals in the capital Tehran, the north-western city of Ardabil and the western city of Kermanshah.

In one from Tehransar, in western Tehran, several girls purportedly from 13 Aban School are seen lying on beds in a hospital ward and receiving oxygen.

Another video from the city's east shows girls sitting on the pavement outside a primary school. A mother is then seen rushing up to the gate and screaming: "Where is my child?" A man replies: "They've poisoned the students with gas."

Primary schools have been among those targeted in the apparent attacks

Authorities are under increasing pressure from the public to stop the poisonings, which were initially concentrated in the Shia Muslim holy city of Qom, south of Tehran.

Research by BBC Persian established that at least 830 students, mostly schoolgirls, had been poisoned as of Sunday, while a member of parliament put the figure at 1,200 in Qom and the western city of Borujerd alone as of Tuesday.

Those affected have reported the smell of tangerine or rotten fish before falling ill.

The chairman of the parliamentary education committee, Alireza Monadi-Sefidan, was quoted by Fars as saying on Tuesday that an investigation had found that the toxic gas contained nitrogen.

However, the interior minister told reporters on Wednesday that reports saying a specific chemical substance had been detected were incorrect.

One parent told the BBC that girls at their daughter's school in the Tehran suburb of Pardis were poisoned on Tuesday.

"My daughter and two of her friends say they heard something like an explosion and immediately afterwards an unpleasant smell - something like burned plastic filled the air," said the parent, who the BBC is not identifying for safety reasons.

"They were asked to leave the class and go into the yard. Many of the students started collapsing in the yard. There are kids with asthma and heart problems in my daughter's class."

"Ambulances and the police arrived. Kids were given milk by the ambulance staff."

On Sunday, Deputy Health Minister Younes Panahi said it was "evident that some people wanted all schools, especially girls' schools, to be closed down", although he later said that his remarks had been misunderstood.

Some people have speculated that the schoolgirls are being targeted as "payback" for their role in the mass protests that erupted in September after the death in custody of, Mahsa Amini, a young woman who was detained by morality police for allegedly failing to wear her headscarf "properly".

Authorities have portrayed the protests as "riots" and responded with lethal force. Human rights groups have reported that hundreds of protesters have been killed, among them dozens of children.

Poisonings have been reported across the country, including in the north-western city of Ardabil

In another video posted online on Wednesday, a woman is heard saying that girls at a primary school in Kermanshah had told her that they heard an explosion, and that their headteacher then announced that some students were unwell and ambulances were being called.

The woman then talks to a young girl, who wonders whether they were "chosen" because they had taken part in the protests.

Public anger at the poisonings and the authorities' response have prompted fresh unrest.

A second video from Tehransar on Wednesday showed a group of girls outside 13 Aban School shouting "Woman, life, freedom" - the main slogan of the protest movement - as well as "Death to the child-killing government."

The parent from Pardis said: "We arrived at the school, angry and worried. Parents started shouting slogans against [Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali] Khamenei."

"Nobody believes they will investigate these attacks," they added. "I have no hope in the system. But I hope the world will hear our voice and stop supporting these child killers."

Officials reported that 35 students from their daughter's school were taken to hospital after the poisoning. But the parent said the actual number was much higher.

"From my conversations with parents and the school principal, half of the students were taken to hospitals. That is at least 200 students."

One of those children was in a coma, they said, adding: "Some parents have also refused to take their children to hospital because they are afraid and don't trust the officials."

Iranian Teen Brain Dead After Morality Police Attacked Her For Not Wearing Hijab

An Iranian teenager who was reportedly assaulted by state morality police for not wearing a mandatory hijab is now ‘brain dead’, it has been claimed.

BBC 23 OCT 2023

Unverified CCTV footage shows her being taken from the metro train

Armita Geravand, 16, fell into a coma after she sustained ‘severe injuries’ in the believed physical assault

Armita Geravand, 16, fell into a coma after she sustained ‘severe injuries’ following a ‘physical assault’ by female morality police officers on the Tehran metro, according to a human rights group.

Hengaw, a Norway-based Kurdish human rights NGO, claimed that Armita was attacked by hijab officers in Shohada Station, for not wearing a headscarf.

All women in Iran are meant to wear a hijab under strict morality laws, and the teen is now being treated at Tehran’s Fajr hospital.

State media said: ‘Follow-ups on the latest health condition of Geravand indicate that her condition of being brain dead seems certain despite the efforts of the medical staff.’

She has been left in a coma since the incident

Armita’s case has raised concerns the 16-year-old might face the same fate as Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman whose death in a coma last year in the custody of morality police sparked months of nationwide protest.

Unverified CCTV footage appears to show the teenager walking towards the train without a hijab on with two of her friends.

Upon entering the train, one of the girls is seen immediately backing off and reaching for the ground, before another girl is dragged unconscious from the cabin by passengers.

Several passengers can be seen gathering round to watch the girl be carried off.

Hengaw later shared a photo of a young girl lying in a hospital bed with several pieces of medical equipment attached to her, claiming it was an image of Armita.

A source told an Iranian news agency that she was ‘brought into hospital in a comatose state’ and needed CPR as she had either ceased breathing or her heart had stopped.

Authorities denied that this was a case of state abuse against yet another young woman.

The head of the Tehran Metro Operating Company, Masoud Dorosti, said the CCTV footage showed no sign of verbal or physical conflict between passengers or company employees.

There were no verbal or physical altercations between the student and passengers or metro personnel. Rumours about a confrontation between metro personnel and the student are baseless and are contradicted by metro security footage,’ he said.

Armita’s parents publicly stated that their daughter had suffered a drop in blood pressure, lost her balance, and hit her head inside the metro cabin.

But several activists, who spoke to Reuters on the condition of anonymity claim Iran has applied heavy pressure on her parents.

An Iranian journalist investigating the incident was arrested and held by authorities for several hours after she made inquiries at the hospital.
