A magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck Argentina prompted a tsunami warning along the coasts of Chile and sparked terror with people fleeing from their homes.

The warning said hazardous waves were possible for coasts within 300km of the earthquake epicentre. Local government agencies were instructed to warn coastal populations which may be at risk, and to monitor threat levels after a red alert was issued with evacuation orders in several parts of Chile. While authorities lifted the warning shortly after 12pm, massive waves could still pose a danger.

People living on coasts were told to stay alert. Residents were reminded the first wave to strike might not be the largest and the time between waves can be anything between five minutes to an hour.
