Historic wildfires devastating Los Angeles have now killed at least 11 people and devoured nearly 10,000 buildings with five separate blazes burning into a fourth day this morning as desert winds continue to fan the flames.

Stunning images showed how Malibu - a beachside paradise just days ago - was obliterated by the inferno, its signature rows of palm trees reduced to blackened stumps.

Rows of glitzy waterfront houses lay in charred ruins after the punishing blaze ripped through them - save for one miracle structure which stood alone. The $8million mansion, which was built in 2000 and owned by waste management CEO David Steiner, is now flanked by smoldering debris on all sides.


Dozens of blocks were flattened in the upscale Pacific Palisades neighborhood moments away, home to a slew of A-list celebrities. For many, only the outlines of homes and their chimneys remained.

Paris Hilton, Anthony Hopkins, Tina Knowles, John Goodman, Candy Spelling, Milo Ventimiglia, and Miles Teller are among those whose homes were demolished.

The so-called Palisades Fire between Santa Monica and Malibu on LA's western flank and the Eaton Fire in the east near Pasadena already rank as the most destructive in Los Angeles history, consuming more than 34,000 acres (13,750 hectares) - or some 53 square miles.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna told a press conference late last night that he expected the death toll of 11 to grow rapidly.

It looks like an atomic bomb dropped in these areas. I don't expect good news, and we're not looking forward to those numbers, Luna said, as reports of horrific deaths endured by those trapped emerged.

Anthony Mitchell, a 67-year-old amputee, and his son, Justin, who had cerebral palsy, were waiting for an ambulance to come, but they did not make it out, Mitchells daughter, Hajime White, told The Washington Post.

Shari Shaw told KTLA that she tried to get her 66-year-old brother, Victor Shaw, to evacuate Tuesday night but he wanted to stay and fight the fire. Crews found his body with a garden hose in his hand.

Nearly 800 inmates are among the 14,000 emergency responders working on the wildfires that have destroyed at least 2,000 buildings and killed at least seven in the Los Angeles area.


At present, inmates are believed to make up approximately 30 percent of the states firefighting force, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Wildfires are a constant and formidable challenge for California, and CDCR conservation fire camps remain dedicated to supporting the states response, Jeff Macomber, secretary of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, said in a statement this week.

The work of our incarcerated firefighters and staff is an essential part of this effort, and their commitment to protecting lives and property during these emergencies cannot be overstated.

The practice isnt new; California has been using inmate firefighters since as far back as 1915, and began a fire camp program to properly train the inmates in firefighting methods began in 1946

A new fast-moving wildfire has erupted in Los Angeles County, prompting tens of thousands to evacuate a region already reeling from the most destructive fires in its history.




The Hughes fire ignited about 45 miles north-west of the city of Los Angeles on Wednesday morning, near Castaic Lake in a mountainous area that borders several residential areas and schools.

The blaze grew to more than 9,200 acres in several hours on Wednesday, fuelled by winds and dry brush. No homes or businesses have been damaged, and fire officials expressed confidence about getting the blaze under control.

The new fire is located north of the two mammoth blazes - which are still burning - that destroyed multiple neighbourhoods in the Los Angeles area earlier this month.

Local news showed residents near the Hughes fire hosing down their homes and gardens with water and others rushing to evacuate neighbourhoods.

Orange flames lined the mountains as aircraft dropped water and flame retardant.

The region is once again under a red flag warning, which cautions of a high fire risk due to strong winds and dry, low-humid conditions.

Winds in the area were blowing around 20 to 30mph (32 to 48km), but could pick up, which would fan the blaze and make it harder for air crews to operate.

About 31,000 people in the area are under a mandatory evacuation order and another 23,000 have been warned they may have to flee, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said. A jail in the area was evacuating nearly 500 inmates at the facility, he added.

The fire continued to grow as the sun set, but Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said he believed crews were making progress.
