A powerful typhoon has hit Japan's southern island of Okinawa, injuring more than 50 people and leaving thousands without power.
The country's Meteorological Agency said Typhoon Jelawat was expected to hit the Tokyo region Sunday evening. Residents have been warned to stay indoors.
Amateur footage posted online shows a car being lifted into the air by strong winds in Urasoe city, as the BBC's Philippa Thomas reports.

Japan Broadcasting Corporation) Sep. 30, 2012

A strong typhoon is moving through northeastern Japan, delivering severe winds and heavy rain. Officials fear that rivers will overflow and have told tens of thousands of households to evacuate.

Japan's Meteorological Agency says Typhoon Jelawat made landfall around 7PM on Sunday. It is heading northeast at 55 kilometers an hour and is accelerating as it passes over the main island of Honshu.

The agency says atmospheric pressure at its center is 975 hectopascals, with winds of up to 126 kilometers an hour.

NHK has learned the typhoon has left one man dead, one person missing, and 169 people injured in Okinawa and 12 other prefectures, as of midnight on Sunday.

The man was fishing when he was swept away by a strong wave. The injured people were blown over by winds or hit by flying objects.

About 280,000 households are without electricity and 50 of Monday's flights have been cancelled.

The agency is warning of severe wind, landslides, storm surge and floods, as well as lightning and tornadoes. It also warns that by late Monday night up to 150 millimeters of rain are expected in northeastern Japan, and up to 120 millimeters in Hokkaido, northern Japan.
