A powerful earthquake centred in Moroccos’ High Atlas mountains killed hundreds of people, the government said, after buildings collapsed and people fled their shuddering homes in several cities and towns.

Residents of Marrakech, the nearest major city to the epicentre, said some buildings had collapsed in the old city, a Unesco world heritage site, and local television showed pictures of a fallen mosque minaret with rubble lying on smashed cars after the quake struck at 11.11pm on Friday.

On Saturday morning, Moroccan television reports raised the death toll to 632, with 329 injured, citing the interior ministry. Earlier, the ministry said there were hundreds of deaths in the provinces near the quake centre. The ministry added that most damage occurred outside of cities and towns.

A local official said most deaths were in mountainous areas that were hard to reach.

“The earth shook for about 20 seconds. Doors opened and shut by themselves as I rushed downstairs from the second floor,” said Hamid Afkir, a teacher in a mountainous area west of the epicentre near Taroudant, adding there had been aftershocks.

Moroccos’ geophysical centre said the quake struck in the Ighil area of the High Atlas with a magnitude of 7.2. The US Geological Survey put the quake’s magnitude at 6.8 and said it was at a relatively shallow depth of 18.5km (11.5 miles).

The quake was the strongest to hit the nations’ centre in more than a century and many people are feared to still be trapped under the rubble deep in the Atlas Mountains, including holidaymakers that are still missing

More than 2,000 people have died so far after a rare and strong earthquake struck Morocco, close to the popular tourist city of Marrakech on Friday night. The search for survivors is continuing amid fears the death toll could rise substantially.

The quake was the strongest to hit the nation’s centre in more than a century and many people are feared to still be trapped under the rubble deep in the Atlas Mountains. Tremors were felt as far away as Portugal and Spain as holidaymakers in the North African country recall waking up to trembling rooms and screams. At least 2,012 people died in the 7.2 magnitude quake, Morocco’s Interior Ministry reported Saturday night. At least 2,059 more people were injured — 1,404 critically — the ministry said. Plus many people, including Brits, are still unaccounted for.

A Moroccan-based British journalist told the Mirror yesterday that he was woken by his wife's piercing scream and in minutes many of their walls had pancaked to the ground. He likened the chaos to a warzone. "I've been in six or seven war zones as a journalist and so the only thing I can liken it to — the noise, the confusion and the sheer terror of being in a situation where you feel so vulnerable — is a war zone", said Martin Jay.
