UK Heatwave: Hot Weather Map Turns RED as Sweltering 86F Blast to Bake Britain

UK Weather Map Turns RED in Massive 24 Hour Heat Spike as El Nino Peak Looms

BBC NEWS 6 JULY 2023

SWELTERING 86F (30C) heat will bake Britain next week as weather maps show more hot weather is on the way in just a few days.

Heatwave conditions are about to make a return to our shores after a fairly soggy and thundery weekend all round. Weather maps from WXCharts, which takes its data from MetDesk, pinpoint the exact date hot weather will return to the UK. And it’s not long to wait, the latest charts reveal.

August will kick off to a blinding start as next Friday will see temperatures rise to the mid to highs 20s.

By 6pm on Friday, July 31, much of the UK has turned red as the weather maps show a band of hot weather sweeping across the country.

About 22C to 25C will be felt by much of England, with 19C to 20C for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

London and the surrounding areas will see the brunt of the rising mercury, forecast to hit about 27C by Friday evening.

And the weather forecast just keeps getting better from thereThe 2-metre maximum temperature charts show that into Saturday, it’s only going to get warmer.

Temperatures in the south east will rise to 27 to 28C, with a high of 30C (86F) in and around London.

The band of red has become smaller, but those expecting the hot weather will see balmy temperatures of about 22C to 26C.

Elsewhere in the UK, temperatures will remain steady at about 19 to 20C, dropping to between 12 and 17C in some parts of Scotland.

Into Sunday, and the weather forecast looks much the same with heat continuing to swelter the south east.

Highs of 23 to 24C will be felt for London and the surrounding area, with maximum temperatures expected to stay around 19C and 20C for the rest of the country.

This will continue into Monday, August 3 and for much of the week, with Thursday’s temperatures expected to be about 23C by 6pm.

The sweltering temperatures come as Europe, too, bakes with up to 40C heat over the same time period.

Parts of the south of France could see highs of 38.8C by the end of Saturday, while Spain is expected to roast in 39.6C.

Record temperatures are being recorded in Europe as an "unbearable" heatwave is making its way across the continent.

Temperatures are expected to surpass 40C (104F) in parts of Spain, France, Greece, Croatia and Turkey.

In Italy, temperatures could reach as high as 48.8C (119.8F), which is as hot as the hottest temperature ever recorded in Europe.

A red alert warning - which means there's a danger to life - has been issued for 10 cities, including Rome, Bologna and Florence.

Is Europe Getting Hotter?

Yes. Global warming is driving average temperatures up around the world every year, and heatwaves like this are becoming more frequent, more intense, and last longer.

It has been reported that a 44-year-old man has died in Italy, as a result of the heat.

Italian politician Nicola Fratoianni tweeted: "We are facing an unbearable heatwave," and urged residents to stay out of the sun when it is at its strongest.

Authorities are also advising people to to drink at least two litres of water per day to stay hydrated.

From wildfires gripping parts of Greece to China, opening air raid shelters - countries everywhere have been clambering for respite amidst temperatures as high as 52C as climate scientists issue a stark warning

A devastating heatwave "silently killing" people in Southern Europe due to climate change could arrive in the UK this summer, an expert today warned.

Professor Hannah Cloke OBE, a top climate scientist, is "frightened" by the temperatures approaching 50C throughout Europe this summer.

The searing heat, which has killed people and caused devastating forest fires, has led to 16 Italian cities become subject of rare, red weather alertsItaly is currently in the critical zone, with its first recorded death attributed to the deadly "Cerberus" heatwave, which is named after the three-headed dog of Ancient Greek myth and the hound guarding the lower circles of hell as detailed in Dante's Inferno.

The 44-year-old road worker was on the job when he collapsed in Lodi, southeast of Milan, amid reports of 45C heat. Two Italian brothers, six and seven, also indirectly fell victim to the extreme heat when they drowned in an irrigation basin after seeking a cooling sanctuary from the atmospheric oven in Manfredonia, on Italy's eastern coast.

And in Rome yesterday British tourists were spotted fainting under the sheer pressure of the searing sun. Concerned locals were seen dishing out water bottles in the hopes of alleviating the severity of the weather.

There appear to be no signs of the rolling heat slowing, with southern Spain bracing for a 44C high today, the same as is expected in Greece this week. The conditions are expected to last another two weeks, with Cyprus (41C), Croatia (39C) and France (34C) all to be affected.

British tourists taking their holidays across southern Europe have been warned of a "significant" risk to life. Prof Cloke, academic at University of Reading, said the situation must be a trigger for the world to take action against climate change - even if it might be too late...

Thousands of Brits are being scrambled back to the UK following further evacuations in holiday spots in Greece after raging wildfires.

Parts of Corfu continue to be evacuated today as the blazes take hold of a second Greek island following dramatic rescues on Rhodes. It is thought between 7,000 and 10,000 British tourists were in Rhodes, alone, when authorities issued evacuation orders on the weekend.

TUI has cancelled all outbound flights to Rhodes while EasyJet will lay on two repatriation flights today to Gatwick Airport, and another on Tuesday.

The danger to life warnings have come from Greece's Emergency Communications Service after fire broke out in the northern part of the island of Corfu this afternoon. It orders people to leave the the areas of Santa, Megoula, Porta, Palia Perithia and Sinies and head to Kasiopi.

Tourists told of their fear, with one describing the moment she found "it harder to breathe" and how "people were fighting to get on the boats".

A little girl screamed she "didn't want to die" when her family, from Manchester, were evacuated from a hotel on Rhodes.

Foreign Office minister Andrew Mitchell told Times Radio: "The best estimate of the number of British tourists on Rhodes is between 7,000 and 10,000. This is peak holiday season."

Greek firefighters have hinted there are "indications of arson" as the cause of the apocalyptic wildfires on the holiday island of Rhodes this weekend.

The heatwaves battering Europe and the US in July would have been "virtually impossible" without human-induced climate change, a scientific study says.

More than 40 people have died - most of them in Algeria - in the Mediterranean wildfires threatening villages and holiday resorts, and thousands have been evacuated.

Greece is preparing for more evacuation flights from Rhodes, as fires also rage on the islands of Corfu and Evia.

The current long heatwave shows no let-up - temperatures are expected to rise above 44C (111F) in parts of Greece.

Two Greek air force pilots have died after a plane crashed while fighting wildfires on the Greek island of Evia, officials say.

The water-bombing plane crashed while battling a forest fire near Platanistos, the defence ministry said.

The pilots were named as 34-year-old Cdr Christos Moulas and his co-pilot, 27-year-old Pericles Stefanidis.

An intense European heatwave has also sparked wildfires across Sicily, Algeria and Tunisia.

Greek TV showed the Canadair aircraft flying low to drop water on a fire before turning sharply into a hillside and bursting into flames.

State broadcaster ERT said the plane crashed over the town of Karystos on the island, where a fire was burning.

The plane was among at least three other aircraft and about 100 firefighters tackling fires on Evia.

Defence Minister Nikos Dendias said the pilots lost their lives "in the line of duty... while attempting to protect the lives and property of citizens, as well as the environment of our country".

A three-day mourning period has been declared in the Greek armed forces, the defence ministry said.

Emergency teams were fighting flames non-stop on dozens of fronts on Tuesday, Greek government minister Vassilis Kikilias said.

Crete, the largest Greek island, has been put on high alert, with residents warned there is an "extreme risk" of fire.

More evacuation flights are taking place from Rhodes, while more than 20,000 people have been evacuated from homes and resorts in recent days.

An international panel of scientists has said the current conditions could not possibly have happened without human-caused climate change.

Elsewhere in the Mediterranean, the Italian island of Sicily has been battling fires overnight after weeks of record-breaking temperatures.

Local media warned that the city of Palermo was "encircled" by fires, including a blaze that forced the temporary closure of Palermo airport on Tuesday.

Northern Italy has been reeling from violent storms and high winds that have uprooted trees and lifted roofs off buildings.

In some places, tennis ball-sized hailstones injured people, damaged cars and destroyed crops.

Firefighters are battling flames near the village of Vati on the island of Rhodes in Greece

Algeria has also been battling to control wildfires along its Mediterranean coast that have killed at least 34 people.

A number of people suffered burn injuries and smoke inhalation, while more than 1,500 were evacuated from fires in 16 provinces.

An outbreak of 97 fires had mostly been brought under control, but 13 were still raging on Tuesday afternoon, the interior ministry said.

In neighbouring Tunisia, where temperatures up to 49C (120F) were recorded, officials said authorities were investigating the causes of forest fires that had broken out across the country in recent days.

One of the most severe fires in Maloula, near the Algerian border, has been brought under control after thousands were evacuated.

A forestry official has called for anyone found to have started the fires deliberately to be prosecuted "with an iron fist"

Era of Global Boiling Has Arrived UN Chief Warns

Arsonists Behind Greece and Italys' Devastating Wildfires

BBC 29 JULY 2023

Antonio Guterres warned “the era of global boiling has arrived” as he spoke after scientists confirmed July was on track to be the world’s hottest month on record.

The UN secretary general added that “leaders must lead” on the climate crisis, as he labelled the level of fossil fuel profits and climate inaction “unacceptable”.

“Climate change is here. It is terrifying. And it is just the beginning,” Mr Guterres said.

“The era of global warming has ended, the era of global boiling has arrived.”

Arsonists Behind Greece and Italys' Devastating Wildfires

https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/Uw...53af0c943898f3

Arsonists are being blamed for devastating wildfires that have swept through the Greek island of Corfu.

Corfu mayor Yorgos Mahimaris claimed on Monday that an arsonist started the fires which have sparked mass evacuations.

Mr Mahimaris came to the conclusion after visiting three locations where fires broke out on Mount Pantokratoras.

Theofanis Skembris, deputy mayor of North Corfu, backed this view and said that four fires were “started simultaneously".

Speaking to the BBC, he said: "We have to wait for the investigation, but their first unofficial assumption is that it was arson - fires can't start simultaneously in four different places.

"The situation on the island is better now. Most of the fires are under control. There are firefighting airplanes helping. I believe that everything will be over soon."

Chariton Koutscouris, Corfu's deputy mayor for tourism and construction, also blamed the fires on people who get “pleasure out of this with the pain of the other people".

He said officials had a "suspicion" they would start over the weekend after being warned on Friday by a fire service chief.

Humans start most wildfires - either intentionally by the criminal act of arson or by accident from campfires, vehicle sparks or improperly disposed cigarettes, for example.

However once ignited, wildfires are being driven to larger and more intense extremes due to rising global heat and drought conditions caused by the climate crisis.

A Greek Fire Service spokesperson said that 12 residential areas were evacuated in Corfu with tourists being taken to the village of Kassiopi. Some later fled the island on boats, according to reports.

Dozens of wildfires are burning across Greece as firefighters battle to get them under control. The blazes have led to Greece’s largest-ever mass evacuation.

A total of 64 of the fires started on Sunday, the hottest day of the summer so far as temperatures peaked at 46.4C in the southern Greek town of Gytheio.

On the island of Rhodes, some 19,000 people had been evacuated from several locations as wildfires burned for a sixth day, Greek authorities said.

Greece has seen record temperatures this month

Speaking before parliament on Monday, Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis described the fight against the fire on Rhodes as a "war."

"We will rebuild what we lost, and cover the damages. Protecting human lives should be our priority," he said.

He also said that climate change "will make its presence ever more felt with greater natural disasters throughout the Mediterranean region".

He spoke as thousands of tourists are expected to fly home after the fires led to holidays ruined or cut short.

Aside from the environmental damage, the heavily tourist-dependent economies of the Greek islands are also set to take a hit.

Arsonists Behind Italys' Wildfires

https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cp...m130554484.jpg

Wildfires have been raging in parts of southern Italy recently - forcing thousands to flee. Many are blamed on arsonists.

Agricultural union Coldiretti suggests up to 60% of wildfires are man-made. But why would anybody provoke a deadly fire?

Locals in Calabria tell the BBC that everyone from clumsy farmers to feuding neighbours are to blame for the blazes.

The severe heat and drought, worsened by climate change, only make matters worse.

In this part of Italy, wildfires do more than force evacuations and turn the ground to ash - they destroy the history and ecology of the land.

As we drive around the hills of central Calabria's barren but spectacular Aspromonte National Park, charred remains of vehicles litter the side of the road.

In the last two years, fires have damaged a 13th century church in Sicily and burnt down several century-old olive trees in Puglia.

Most tragically, earlier this week, one of Calabria's oldest folk musicians, 98-year-old Diego Aquilino, died in his bed when the flames reached his home.

The President of Calabria, Roberto Occhiuto, went even further than Coldiretti and estimated that arson in his region was behind 80% of wildfires.

"Last year in Calabria we caught 22 arsonists and this year, too, we are finding several," Mr Occhiuto said.

He and regional authorities are keen to emphasise that they are putting systems in place to deter such behaviour - including drones that scan the territory for arsonists.

Nationwide legislation to combat arson also exists. In 2000, Italy introduced legislation barring anyone from building property on recently burnt terrain in order to combat arsonists looking to buy burnt out land for cheap.

Still, some man-made fires are not necessarily a result of criminal intent.

"We have images, for example, of farmers clumsily starting fires in an attempt to clear weeds," Mr Occhiuto said. But he admitted that drones had also shown images of "organised arson squads".

Every resident the BBC has spoken to in Calabria seems to have an idea of what lies behind intentional fires.

Some suspect firefighters spark the wildfires to force local authorities to pay attention to their plight and increase funding. Some suggest that tensions between rural neighbours are a key factor. Others blame shepherds who want to turn woodland into grazing land.

More still are convinced that pyromaniacs who want to spark chaos are the behind most blazes.

https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cp...m130554486.jpg

Giada Nicolò's family home was almost burned down this week

Giada Nicolò's family home, which is built on a hillside in Mosorrofa in southern Calabria, almost burned down earlier this week after flames crept up from the valley, latched onto the ground floor and spread quickly to all three floors. She got her elderly relatives out just in time.

"All these fires are started by people," she said. "Fires like these don't start on their own. It's arsonists, I'm absolutely convinced."

"What they don't realise is that they are hurting people, and putting lives at risk."

The wildfires are a disaster for the surrounding environment, too.

Francesco Giardina of the Coldiretti tells the BBC it takes around 15 years for destroyed woodland to recover - and the area becomes more vulnerable to landslides.

Extreme temperatures and a lack of rainfall - which are serious issues in southern Italy and are linked to climate change - ensure that "petty pranks" turn into devastating blazes, he said.

A single spark can raze a huge area if the earth is parched. This week, Italian police arrested a 79-year-old man who allegedly lit a vast fire that destroyed 30 hectares (74 acres) of land - the equivalent of 42 football pitches - of olive groves in central Sicily.

"Spiteful or careless actions can result in serious, lasting hardship for the whole area," said Mr Giardina.

He is right.

In Calabria, the smouldering evidence of arson is all around - now a permanent feature of a once-stunning landscape.

ATHENS, Greece — Fierce rainstorms battered neighboring Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria on Tuesday, triggering flooding that caused at least seven deaths, including two holidaymakers swept away by a torrent that raged through a campsite in northwestern Turkey.

Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said four other people were missing after the flash flood swept over the campsite in Kirklareli province, near the border with Bulgaria. He said about 12 vacationers were at the site when the waters hit.

Search teams had located two bodies, he said on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. “The search and rescue efforts for the missing (four) continue uninterrupted,” he added.

Television footage showed rescuers carrying a young girl and an adult to safety from waters reaching waist-high in some areas. The rains also damaged and forced the closure of a main road, HaberTurk television reported.

In Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city, heavy rain flooded streets and homes in two neighborhoods, leaving at least two dead, according to a statement from the governor’s office. Around a dozen people were rescued after being stranded inside a library, while some subway stations were shut down. Istanbul Gov. Davut Gul urged motorcyclists to stay home.

In Greece, police banned traffic in the central town of Volos, the nearby mountain region of Pilion and the resort island of Skiathos as record rainfall caused at least one death, channeled thigh-high torrents through streets and swept cars away.

The fire department said one man was killed near Volos when a wall buckled and fell on him. Five people were reported missing, possibly swept away by floodwaters.

Authorities sent cellphone alerts in several other areas of central Greece, the Sporades island chain and the island of Evia warning people to limit their movements outdoors.

Streams overflowed their banks and swept cars into the sea in the Pilion area, while rockfalls blocked roads, a small bridge was carried away and many areas suffered electricity cuts. Authorities evacuated a retirement home in the city of Volos as a precaution.

Greece’s weather service said a Pilion region village received nearly 30 inches of rain late Tuesday, by far the highest level recorded since at least 2006. It noted that the average annual rainfall in the Athens region is around 15.75 inches.

The country’s minister of climate crisis and civil protection, Vassilis Kikilias, said the heavy rain was expected to ease up after midday Wednesday. He advised people in affected areas to stay indoors.

The storm comes on the heels of major summer wildfires that hit Greece over the past few weeks, with some burning for more than two weeks and destroying vast tracts of forest and farmland. More than 20 people were killed in the fires.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis blamed both the wildfires and storms on climate change, while conceding that his center-right government “clearly didn’t manage things as well as we would have liked” on the wildfire front.

“I am afraid that the careless summers, as we knew them … will cease to exist and from now on the coming summers are likely to be ever more difficult,” he said Tuesday.

Farther north in Bulgaria, Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov said two people died and three others were missing after a storm caused floods on the country’s southern Black Sea coast.

Overflowing rivers caused severe damage to roads and bridges. The area also suffered power blackouts, and authorities warned residents not to drink tap water due to contamination from floodwaters.

High winds sent 6-foot waves crashing onto beaches at tourist resorts amid torrential rain that flooded streets and houses.

TV footage showed cars and camper vans being swept out to sea in the hardest-hit southern resort town of Tsarevo. Authorities declared a state of emergency in Tsarevo and urged people to move upstairs as the ground floors of some hotels were inundated.
