Alberta Declares State of Emergency as Wildfires Continue to Rage

Alberta Asks For Help From Military to Battle Wildfires

BBC News 9 MAY 2023

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith confirmed on Monday that she had spoken with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and has sent a formal request for aid in fighting multiple wildfires that have caused widespread damage and forced thousands to evacuate.

"During our call, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed that the military will be sent to assist if necessary" Smith said.

According to Alberta Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services Mike Ellis, Alberta is requesting such things as firefighting resources, aircraft for evacuating isolated communities, RCMP for security, and exceptions for evacuated Albertans receiving employment insurance.

Premier Smith also announced funding support for evacuees.

Adults who have been evacuated for at least seven consecutive days will receive $1,250 from the province, and an additional $500 for children under 18. People can apply online, and, if eligible, will receive funding via e-transfer.

“These payments will help evacuees pay for accommodations, food and other basic necessities,” Smith said. “The payments will make those expenses one less thing for people to worry about so that they can concentrate on their families and their own well-being.”

People can apply for Emergency Evacuation Funding through the provincial website starting Tuesday, May 9, at 9 a.m.

Wildfire Smoke From Alberta and British Columbia Reaches US

Much of Canada and parts of the US are blanketed by smoke as wildfires in the province of Alberta continue to rage.

BBC News 12 MAY 2023

As of Thursday, there are 75 active wildfires in Alberta, 23 of which are considered out of control.

Early May is typically the start of wildfire season in the region, but experts have said that this level activity is unusual.

Temperatures are expected to rise sharply in the coming days, fuelling concern of more fires to come.

Images taken by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) show the smoke from the Alberta wildfires has travelled far to the eastern portion of Canada, reaching Quebec and Ontario down to the US-Canada border.

"Canada's wildfire season is off to an unusually active start," NOAA said on Twitter on Thursday.

NOAA's fire and smoke map showed much of Canada covered in light to medium smoke as of Thursday evening. The map also shows light smoke hanging over much of the US northeast and mid-Atlantic regions.

In the Washington DC area, the National Weather Service said Thursday's bright orange sunset was caused by "smoke from the Canadian wildfires [that] remains suspended in the upper atmosphere".

As the fires in Alberta continue to burn, 300 members of the Canadian military are being deployed to help local firefighters put out the flames on the ground and by air, officials said.

The military will also aid with community evacuations. Nearly 30,000 people have been forced out of their homes since the fires began a week ago.

Officials said that 28 schools remain closed due to the fires, affecting more than 6,000 students.

"I recognise that this continues to be an extremely stressful time for many Albertans," said Mike Ellis, Alberta's minister of emergency preparedness, at a news conference on Thursday.

Mr Ellis said while temperatures in the province have cooled in recent days, the region is slated for an "above normal" hot and dry weekend that raises the threat of more fires.

The western Canada province saw 427 fires so far this year that burned through 410,000 hectares - nearly double the five-year average of hectares burned in an entire season.

Nearby British Columbia (BC) and Saskatchewan have also seen fires and evacuations in recent days.

Like Alberta, BC is also slated for an unusually hot few days from Friday to Tuesday, raising concerns about both wildfires and floods from snowmelts. Temperatures are expected to hit 30C (86F) on Monday near Fort St John, a town near the BC-Alberta border, where a wildfire is burning nearby.

Experts say that while wildfires can be sparked by direct human involvement, natural factors can also play a huge part.

The cycle of extreme and long-lasting heat caused by climate change draws more and more moisture out of the ground and vegetation. The world has already warmed by about 1.2C since the industrial era began.

Alberta, Canada, Wildfires Show NO END in SIGHT as Wildfires RAGE Across 30 sq MILES With NO Sign of Slowing

The province of Alberta, Canada, home to more than four million people, is under a state of emergency, as nearly 100 wildfires burn, dozens of them out of control.

BBC 20 MAY 2023

Since the first local state of emergency was declared on 4 May, over 782,000 hectares of land - 1.9 million American football fields or more than 3,000 square miles - have burned, local officials said. Take a look at Albertas' out-of-control wildfires from space

Thousands of firefighters and support staff from across Canada and the US have descended upon the area to fight the ceaseless flames.

Still, there are 93 active wildfires in Alberta as of 12:00 EST (17:00 BST) on Friday, and experts say the end is nowhere in sight.

Early data suggests this wildfire season could be one of the worst on record.

Why is it so bad?

Wildfires in Alberta are typical in May, said Terri Lang, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada.

During the spring, the snow begins to melt, exposing the twigs, branches, and dead leaves beneath. Experts refer to this as "fuel".

Warm temperatures and dry conditions increase the fuel's flammability.

But this year, Alberta was subject to both record-breaking heat and below-average rainfall.

"That just exacerbated the whole situation," Ms Lang said.

Warmer temperatures and less rainfall have created ripe conditions for intense wildfires

From the middle of February to the middle of May, the majority of central and northern Alberta received 50% less rainfall this year than the typical 90-day average over the same period, Ms Lang said, and 75-100% less in some parts of the area.

Meanwhile, average temperatures were 3-6C higher, she said.

Heat records across Alberta were broken 158 times between 1-15 May alone, Ms Lang said.

"It's alarming. We've seen similar events, but not this early in the year," she said.

"The amount of smoke being belched out by these fires is unbelievable. It's covering pretty much all of western Canada. And that has effects on people too."

Living Under Clouds of Smoke

Marilyn Hamelin, 59, lives in High Prairie, Alberta, amid the smoke and ashes blanketing her town from the wildfires roaring roughly 10km (6 miles) away.

High Prairie has been under official evacuation alert since 12 May, where automatic alerts interrupt the TVs, radios, tablets and cell phones of residents daily, warning them of how imminent an official evacuation may be.

"I'm scared," she said. "It just seems gloomy out all the time. There's no sun or anything."

Map showing where Alberta is in Canada

Ms Hamelin, who said she has chronic lung disease, was rushed to the hospital in the beginning of May after suffering a severe sudden bout of pneumonia, which she blames on the smoke.

"My roommate called my brother to come pick me up," she said, recalling the incident. "I couldn't breathe. I was gasping for air."

Going in and out of consciousness, she said her brother drove her to McLennan hospital, roughly 35 minutes away, because the hospital in her town was forced to close.

Some facilities in High Prairie, including nursing homes and hospitals, shutdown as a precaution and vulnerable groups were evacuated. High Prairie Hospital has since reopened.

Although Ms Hamelin is back home, she lives in constant paranoia of another pneumonia attack as smoke-filled skies remain.

"I kind of feel like it's coming back again, from the smoke," she said. "I just stay inside the house, waiting to see if we have to evacuate."

'No Telling When This Could End'

By 16 May, 19,576 people had been forced to evacuate their homes in Alberta, officials said. Since then, the number of evacuees has dropped to 10,523.

"We are only in mid-May," said Josee St-Onge, an information officer with Alberta Wildfire. "Our wildfire season usually goes until the fall."

The 782,000 hectares that have already burned are nearly seven times higher than the five-year average for the same period, she said, which is 123,000 hectares.

"What's unusual and makes it more challenging is that instead of seeing one big wildfire in a specific part we are seeing a lot of wildfires spread across the territory," Ms St-Onge said.

"There's going to be a lot of work to bring these wildfires under control."

Thousands of firefighters and support staff have descended upon Alberta to aid relief efforts

Ms St-Onge said 1,600 firefighters and support staff from Canada are in the area battling the blazes, plus over 1,000 more from other agencies in North America, including the US.

Mike Flannigan, research chair for predictive services, emergency management and fire service at Thompson Rivers University, said: "My colleagues and I are attributing this largely to human-caused climate change."

"As our climate warms, we can expect to see more fire, more smoke," he said. "Not every year, but on average, we are going to see more bad fires."

The smoke from the wildfires poses a health risk to those in the area

Experts struggle to predict when this year's wildfires in Alberta will fizzle out.

"We need a lot of rain for a very long time to really get a handle on what's happening," said Ms Lang from Environment Canada.

"And that's not showing up in the weather models. So there's really no telling of when this could end."

Canada Wildfires: US East Coast Sees Worst Air Quality in Years

Washington DC and Philadelphia experienced their worst air quality in years as intense wildfires in Canada continue to impact millions.

BBC 9 JUNE 2023

The distribution of wildfire smoke

The poor conditions have forced event cancellations and grounded flights across the US.

Nearly 100 million people are experiencing very poor air quality in North America.

US President Joe Biden described the fires as a "stark reminder of the impacts of climate change".

Data from the US Environmental Protection Agency's Air Quality Index (AQI) shows that cities in North America had the worst air quality in the world on Thursday morning.

Cities including Washington DC, Philadelphia and New York had significantly worse air quality than cities abroad such as Lahore, Dhaka and Hanoi.

The smoke has caused the cancellation of school outings and sporting events, and, in the capitol, the White House's planned pride celebrations.

The National Zoo was also closed, with its animals, including three giant pandas, taken indoors to shelter.

In nearby Baltimore, residents were wearing masks as they went about their day-to-day activities. One local, Sean Montague, said people "have to put your health first and be cautious".

At the city's Inner Harbour, friends Sharifah and Sheila disembarked from a water taxi, eager to hurry indoors.

They said they originally planned to spend the day in Baltimore's Fells Point, a waterside neighbourhood known for its galleries, shops and outdoor seafood restaurants.

But once on the water, their eyes stung and the smoke was so thick, so they agreed the ride was "miserable" and decided to return home.

Much of the smoke is coming from Quebec, where 150 fires are burning. It is already Quebec's worst fire season on record.

Some areas of Canada continued to experience very high levels of contamination on Thursday. The city of Janvier in Alberta, for example, had an AQI of 338, far above Washington DC's 293.

Mr Biden said he spoke to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday and deployed more than 600 firefighters to help battle the blazes in Canada.

On a typical Thursday, Washington DC's Union Market would usually be packed with customers, dining al fresco in the afternoon sun.

But with smoke thick in the air, dozens of tables and chairs sat empty. A nearby rooftop bar was completely deserted except for a small group of Canadian tourists, who jokingly apologised for the disruption.

One customer, Tori, sat back in a lone Adirondack chair, with a mask tied around her wrist having just travelled from West Virginia.

"As I was driving, I noticed it was more hazy, and I just feel a little bit different too. I had a headache," she said. "It's very scary, if you think about it."

Environment Canada said conditions were worsening in Toronto on Thursday, as more smoke poured in. The agency has recommended that anyone outdoors wear a mask.

"These fine particles generally pose the greatest risk to health. However, respirators do not reduce exposure to the gases in wildfire smoke," the Environment Canada statement said.
