Unprecedented wildfires have been burning along the Arctic Circle for months, releasing record amounts of greenhouse gases.

Scientists say the fires, fuelled by abnormally high temperatures, are contributing to global warming.

Sophie Raworth presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Steve Rosenberg who travelled to the remote Yakutia region in Siberia.

Scientists are warning that across Siberia, vast areas normally frozen all year round, are now thawing, with potentially devastating consequences for the global climate.

The thawing permafrost is affecting not just the climate but also the landscape and the livelihoods of the people living there.
