NEWTOWN, Conn. — More than a dozen people, including children, have been killed in a shooting in a southwestern Connecticut elementary school on Friday, according to federal and state officials.

Many of the shots were fired in a kindergarten classroom, according to the Hartford Courant.

The shooting was reported at 9:40 a.m. at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, a small town off Interstate 84 in western Connecticut.

Police said one gunman is dead, but it was not clear if he was killed by police or self-inflicted wounds.
Sources told CNN that the gunman had two weapons in his possession. Reports of a second gunman have not been confirmed.
Police reported that a gunman was in the main office of the school, and a person in one room had “numerous gunshot wounds,” according to the Courant.
A dispatcher at the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps told the Associated Press that a teacher was shot in the foot and taken to Danbury Hospital. Two other victims were also taken to Danbury Hospital.
The Courant said groups of crying students were seen being escorted away from the school by teachers.
At 11:15 a.m. ABC News reported that the school had been cleared, but the area was still being treated as an active shooting scene.
The school superintendent's office said the district locked down schools and cancelled afternoon classes to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Default re: Kids Return to School & Tribute PHOTOs of Dead-Mass Shooting

PHOTO's from BBC World News:
In Pictures: Mass Shooting at School in Connecticut

Newtown in the US state of Connecticut has reacted with shock at a mass shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. As many as 27 people - including 18 children - are reported dead.

Anxious family members gathered outside the school to await news.

.

One parent said his child's teacher locked the door to the classroom after hearing the shots, and moved all the children in to one corner of the room where they stayed until they were rescued by the police.

The local newspaper, The Newtown Bee, posted this photo of frightened children being escorted away by police.

.

Police said the gunman was dead inside the school, and an investigation into the shooting had begun. There were reports that two handguns
had been recovered.

US TV networks identified the gunman as Ryan Lanza, 24, reported to be living in New Jersey. According to reports, his mother was a teacher found among the dead at the school.

The shooting sparked a huge police operation, with a large area around the school cordoned off

Authorities have not given an indication of the motives of the gunman, but investigations are continuing both in Connecticut and outside the state.

Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy, seen here on the right, is meeting the families of some of the victims.

END

There are more photos, but I am not going to post them. They are upsetting and too intrusive,
especially those of the parents and families of the children that were murdered, being helped away from the scene. There are no words of condolences, that one can express, to ease their pain.

Sleep well little children, you are in a safe place now, playing with the Angels.

Update re: Kids Return to School/Tribute PHOTOs of Dead-Mass Shooting

UPDATE

Sandy Hook Children Return to New School, -More Worry for Parents

Sandy Hook School In Monroe Offers Fresh Start For Kids

Huffington Post, 4 Jan 2013

A Sandy Hook Elementry student flashes a sign as children leave on a school bus in Newtown , Connecticut January 3, 2013. Students at the elementary school where a gunman massacred 26 children and teachers last month were returning Thursday to classes at an alternative campus described by police as 'the safest school in America.'

MONROE, Conn. -- Sarah Caron made her son his favorite pancakes for breakfast and walked the second-grader to the top of the driveway for the school bus.
"I hugged him a lot longer than normal, until he said, `Mommy, please,'" she said. "And then he got on the bus, and he was OK."

It was 7-year-old William's first day of school since last month's massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary, and his mother tried to make the day as normal as possible. But it was harder than usual to say goodbye.
William was among more than 400 students who escaped a gunman's rampage that killed 20 first-graders and six educators at Sandy Hook on Dec. 14. On Thursday, the returning students settled in at their old, familiar desks but in a different school in a different town.
Students, teachers and administrators were met by a large police presence outside their new school in the neighboring town of Monroe, where a middle school that had been shuttered for nearly two years was overhauled and renamed after their old school. Several officers guarded the entrance and checked IDs of parents dropping off children.
Monroe police Lt. Keith White said attendance was very good and the children were getting back to "business as usual."
"A lot of them were happy to see their friends they hadn't seen in a while," he said.
William's classroom had been across the hall from a first-grade room where children and teacher Victoria Soto died, and he had been nervous about going back to school, Caron said. But an open house Wednesday at the school eased some of his fears.

"They didn't talk about what happened at all," she said. "They went in, met up with their teachers, had a little circle time and it was just about trying to get them back into school."

Most of the students arrived at the new school in Monroe by bus, something school officials had suggested to help them get back into a familiar routine.
Nick Phelps, who lives a few blocks from the original Sandy Hook school, said his first-grader and third-grader are excited about the new school because it means a longer bus ride to Monroe, which is about 7 miles away.
He was there when the bus brought them home Thursday afternoon.
"I was never so excited to see my children and, certainly, to see my children get off the bus. There was a shared joy," he said.

About 80 parents attended an assembly Thursday with school and police officials, who fielded questions about security and activities planned for their children. White said security will remain at a high level for now and will be re-evaluated each week.
The gunman, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, shot and killed his mother inside their Newtown home before driving to the school. He shot his way into the building and carried out the massacre before committing suicide as police arrived.
On Thursday, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced the creation of an advisory commission that will review and recommend changes to state laws and policies on gun control, school safety measures and mental health services in the wake of the Sandy Hook rampage.
A spokesman for Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman also said Thursday that Wyman has been invited to attend a meeting between former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and families of the victims.
Spokesman Steve Jensen said a visit by Giffords and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, is "planned but not confirmed" for Friday afternoon. He says the plans include the Giffords meeting at a private home with the families.

Meanwhile, the Hearst Connecticut Media Group apologized Thursday because one of its newspapers ran an ad for an antique gun show next to an article about the Newtown school shooting.

A statement released by Group Publisher Paul Farrell said the ad's placement in The Advocate of Stamford was the result of an oversight.

In Monroe, teams of workers, many of them volunteers, prepared the new school and even raised bathroom floors so the smaller elementary school students can reach the toilets. The students' backpacks and other belongings that were left behind after the shooting were taken to the new school to make them feel at home.

Students found the same chairs and desks, when possible. Their classroom walls were painted the same colors and hung with the same pictures. Other details, such as the location of bookshelves and cubby holes, were replicated as much as possible.

Newtown school Superintendent Janet Robinson said the school has been transformed into a "cheerful" place for the students. She said mental health counselors continue to be available for anyone who needs them.
Caron, 32, said her son knows what happened and has undergone counseling. She said her 5-year-old daughter, Paige, attends afternoon kindergarten at the school and has been dealing with nightmares about "snakes and bears and coyotes."
"She wasn't at school that day but was with me when we went to look for William at the firehouse," Caron said. "Unfortunately, she heard more about it than I wish she did."
Intellectually, Caron said, she knows her children will be very safe at their new school.
"But, emotionally," she said. "It's very hard to turn off the little `What if?' that kind of hangs on and says, `Well, you know what, December 14th started out as a normal day, too."

Movies re: SYRIA- Russias' Other WAR

Evidence of Syrian President Bashar Assad and His Regimes' Legacy of War Crimes

Assad and his regime may never be prosecuted for the acts of terror he perpetrated against his own people during Syria's civil war. Scott Pelley reports on the effort to gather and maintain the evidence against Assad.

Syrian whistleblower details how he leaked torture photos

60 Minutes 2 AUG 2021

If you have children watching 60 Minutes, that's usually a good thing, but this story is not for them.

The images you are about to see are the honest evidence of the greatest war crimes of the 21st century.

President Biden and his national security team will soon face a horror that erupted a decade ago, when many of them were in the Obama administration.

March will bring the 10th anniversary of the popular uprising that began Syria's civil war.

The Syrian dictator, Bashar al-Assad, has gassed the innocent, bombed hospitals and schools, and made thousands disappear.

The evidence is hard to watch but it should be seen.

Many risked their lives to tell this story so that — even if Assad is never arrested — he will be, forever, handcuffed to the truth.

United States of America Baby Face KILLER Boys, Plotted Columbine-Style School Massacre

Baby Face Boys, 13 and 14, Plotted Columbine-Style School Massacre With Guns Stash

Teens Phillip Byrd and Connor Pruett allegedly planned a school shooting after researching the 1999 massacre, until fellow students in Florida reported concerns that one had a gun

Daily Mirror 15 SEP 2021.

Phillip Byrd

Connor Pruett

Two teenage boys allegedly plotted to carry out a mass shooting at their school.

Phillip Byrd, 14, and Connor Pruett, 13, are accused of planning to carry out the shooting, that would mirror the 1999 Columbine massacre at the Harns Marsh Middle School near Fort Myers in Florida, where they study.

They were reportedly caught before they managed to carry out the horrific crime when school administration found the teens with a map of the school marked up to show its security cameras.

The alleged plot was discovered when students told a teacher that one of their classmates had a gun in their bag.

Administration staff were then alerted and that led to an investigation. A weapon was not found but the map showing marks where security cameras were placed was.

The teenagers were caught after staff were alerted to rumours one of them had a gun in their bag

Lee County Police were then alerted and detectives discovered that Bryd and Pruett had been thoroughly studying the Columbine shooting, attempting to learn how to build a pipe bomb and researching how to buy guns on the black market.

Police also searched their homes and found ammunition, guns, and several knives.

Byrd's mother Carrie Tuller broke down in tears as she defended her son when he appeared in court on Sunday.

She said: "He's just a little boy. He didn't think this was really serious. He didn't think they were serious."

Byrd and Pruett were detained on Thursday where they underwent a mental health evaluation before being taken into custody and charged with conspiracy to commit a mass shooting.

Both were ordered to have no contact with school staff or students and were required to stay off school grounds.

They have been ordered by a judge to be held at a juvenile detention centre for 21 days.

They will next appear in court on September 27.

In a news conference, Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno said: "Detectives learned the students took an interest in the Columbine High School shooting.

"They were extensively studying to learn more about the incident and the shooters.

Byrd and Pruett wanted to 'learn about the Columbine shooting'

"This could have been the next Parkland massacre, but we stopped them in the planning stages."

He added that the teenagers were "well known" to police as officers had responded to calls to their homes nearly 80 times in total."

Lee County Superintendent Kenneth Savage tweeted after their arrest:

"To the heroes @HarnsMarshHS, THANK YOU! Your actions saved lives and for that @LeeSchools are forever grateful. All honor to @SheriffLeeFL and staff-students that intervened. "

TERRIFYING: SUV Speeds Past Families Before Ploughing Into Crowd at Waukesha Christmas Parade

Wisconsin: Parade incident driver to be charged with Homicide

Wisconsin officials to charge a driver who ploughed into a Christmas parade on Sunday with five counts of intentional homicide.

BBC 23 Nov 2021

The suspect, Darrell Brooks, poses for an earlier booking photo

TERRIFYING new footage shows the moment an SUV sped past families before ploughing into the crowd at the Waukesha Christmas parade, leaving five dead and scores injured.

A mom captured the horrific scene as the rampage unfolded at the festive event in Wisconsin on Sunday

The woman was at the event with her three-year-old daughter and two sisters when they suddenly started “running for our lives” as gunshots rang out.

“All of a sudden, I hear people screaming and running, I look up and everyone's running and someone's saying ‘he got a gun’ and everyone starts bolting towards the front door of my sister's complex. It was just sheer panic,” the woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, exclusively told The Sun.

She added: “Everyone is just running for their lives. We think that the guy who just drove through the parade has a gun and now he's on the loose, shooting around and it's an active shooter situation now.”

The mother recalls quickly grabbing her daughter so she wouldn’t get hurt and how everyone was running into her sister’s apartment complex for cover.

“Everyone's clutching their children and family members were running into the building trying to squeeze in and someone's yelling ‘he got a gun, he got a gun’,” she said.

“There's children crying, people screaming. It's a complete panic.”

It comes as hundreds of people gathered for a candlelight vigil in Waukesha to remember those who lost their lives.

Darrell Edward Brooks Jr, 39, killed five people, aged between 52 and 81, and injured 48 others, including young children, in Waukesha.

Police say he was fleeing a domestic dispute when he mowed into the crowd.

Waukesha police also said the incident was not an act of terrorism. Several school children and grandparents were among the victims.

The victims named on Monday were:

Mr Wilhelm Hospel, 81
Ms Virginia Sorenson, 79
Ms LeAnna Owen, 71
Ms Tamara Durand, 52
Ms Jane Kulich, 52

They include members of the Milwaukee Dancing Grannies, who are a regular fixture in the city's parades.

"Our group was doing what they loved, performing in front of crowds in a parade putting smiles on faces of all ages," the group wrote in a statement on Facebook. "Those who died were extremely passionate Grannies."

Hundreds of people gathered in Waukesha on Monday night for a candlelight vigil

On Monday night hundreds of people gathered for a candlelight vigil at Waukesha's Cutler Park to remember the victims. Braving freezing conditions, community members listened as an interfaith service read out the names of the victims and volunteers handed out sandwiches, hot chocolate and candles to mourners.

Mayor Shawn Reilly told the crowd that the event was the "beginning of many nights where we will grieve and mourn for those we lost".

Dozens of people still remain in hospital. Police said the injured were taken to six area hospitals by first responders as well as other residents who were at the parade.

Eighteen children were admitted after the incident, the Children's Wisconsin paediatric hospital told reporters on Monday.

The Waukesha Parade Route

Care providers described the incident as one of the state's largest mass casualty events involving children in recent history. Physicians said some children sustained serious head injuries and broken bones.

The injured range in age from three to 16 and include three sets of siblings, medical staff said. Ten children required treatment in the intensive care unit.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee said one of its priests, multiple parishioners and students at a local Catholic school were also among the injured

What do we know about the suspect, Darrell Brooks?

"A lone subject intentionally drove his maroon SUV through barricades and into a crowd of people that was celebrating the Waukesha Christmas parade," city police chief Dan Thompson told reporters at a news conference on Monday.

He added that an officer had fired shots at the vehicle, but had to stop due to the number of people on the street.

Police said they were responding to a domestic incident involving Mr Brooks when he fled the scene and mowed through the parade crowd. Earlier media reports suggested he was escaping a knife fight, but police have not confirmed those details.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel newspaper reported Mr Brooks is currently facing at least five other criminal charges - including for domestic abuse and battery - and had been released from jail on bond just two days earlier. BBC News has also reviewed the records belonging to the suspect.

In a statement on Monday, Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm, a Democrat, said the bail recommendation in Mr Brooks' open court case was "inappropriately low in light of the nature of recent charges and the pending charges" against him.

Mr Brooks is from the city of Milwaukee, about 24 km (15 miles) east of Waukesha.

'Deafening Cries and Screams'

The parade in Waukesha - a community of about 72,000 located to the west of Milwaukee - is traditionally held every year on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, and includes fancy dress, floats, dancers and marching bands. This year's theme was "comfort and joy".

Families lined the sides of the road to watch the event, which was returning after a year's absence due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Local resident Angelito Tenorio told the Journal Sentinel he had just finished marching in the parade when the SUV "put the pedal to the metal and just [started] zooming full speed along the parade route" at about 16:40 (22:40 GMT) on Sunday.

"Then we heard a loud bang, and just deafening cries and screams from people who are struck by the vehicle," he said.

Corey Montiho, whose daughter's dance team was hit by the SUV, told the paper: "There were pom-poms and shoes and spilled hot chocolate everywhere. I had to go from one crumpled body to the other to find my daughter."

Sarah Saldivar, who was at the parade with her two young children, told CBS News she saw "a red blur" and then saw "little girls flying through the air".

One video shared on social media shows the car crashing at high speed through street barriers, while another shows the vehicle driving into what looks like a group of musicians.

Police officers ran down the street during the incident, telling people to take shelter in shops.

Mayor Shawn Reilly described the incident as a "horrible, senseless tragedy".

"I am deeply saddened to know that so many in our community went to a parade but ended up dealing with injury and heartache," he said.

President Joe Biden said he was praying for the community and "monitoring the situation very closely".

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff across the state in honour of the victims.

Waukesha's public schools were closed on Monday, and counselling services were made available to those affected.

A community fund has been created to help victims of the incident.

Michigan School Shooting: Student Kills Three and Wounds Eight

A 15-year-old has killed three fellow students and injured eight others, including a teacher, in a high school shooting in the US state of Michigan.

BBC News 1 DEC 2021.

US shootings on school campuses have been ticking steadily upwards in recent years

The victims have been named as Tate Myre, 16, Madisyn Baldwin, 17, and Hana St Juliana, 14. Officials say they do not know whether they were targeted.

Police allege the suspect, a pupil at the school, used a handgun that his father had bought on Friday.

Students have described hiding under desks during the attack.

Some students had reportedly stayed at home on Tuesday because of safety concerns.

"This wound will never go away"

Police received the first emergency calls from the high school in the town of Oxford, about 40 miles (65km) from Detroit, at 12:51 local time (17:51GMT).

Within minutes, more than 100 calls had been placed to emergency services.

Officials say the suspect surrendered five minutes after police were called when officers confronted the teenager in a school corridor.

No shots were fired during the arrest, and the suspect was not injured, police said, adding that he was carrying a semi-automatic handgun that still contained seven rounds of ammunition at the time.

The precise sequence of events remains unclear, but police said they believed the youth had carried the weapon into school in a backpack, and had emerged from a bathroom brandishing the gun.

Three students died in the attack: two girls, Madisyn Baldwin and Hana St Juliana, and Tate Myre, who died in a local deputy's car before the officer could get him to the hospital.

More than 32,000 people have signed an online petition to rename the school's stadium after Tate, who was one of Michigan's most promising young American footballers.

A vigil was held on Tuesday evening at the Lake Point Community Church

Two of the injured were undergoing surgery on Tuesday evening, while the other six were in a stable condition with gunshot wounds. A teacher whose shoulder had a graze wound had been discharged from hospital.

Oakland County Sheriff, Mike Bouchard, said that investigators were at a loss to explain what might have precipitated "an unspeakable and unforgivable" act of violence, adding that the suspect was not co-operating with authorities.

"The person that's got the most insight and the motive is not talking," he told reporters.

The boy had been told by his parents not to talk to police and officers were searching his home, police said.

All schools will be closed for the rest of the week and crisis support is being offered to students and parents.

"Of course I'm shocked. I'm devastated," said Oxford superintendent of schools Tim Throne.

Students Stayed at Home Because of Safety Concerns

According to the Detroit Free Press newspaper, rumours had been circulating of a possible attack, and some students had decided not to attend classes on Tuesday.

Parent Jody Job told the paper that her son had skipped school because "he felt like something was going to go down".

Robin Redding told the Associated Press that her son had also missed classes due to concerns about safety.

"He was not in school today," she said. "He just said that 'Ma I don't feel comfortable. None of the kids that we go to school with are going today.'"

Police cautioned against speculating on the safety concerns before the investigation is complete.

President Joe Biden spoke about the shooting during a visit to Minneapolis, Minnesota.

"My heart goes out to the families enduring the unimaginable grief of losing a loved one," he said.

US shootings on school grounds have been ticking steadily upwards in recent years, according to pro gun-control group Everytown.

After a brief dip last year during coronavirus lockdowns, the number of such attacks has rebounded with 138 incidents of gunfire on school grounds so far in 2021.

Now countries around the world introduced restrictions following US mass shootings

Oh Crap! Re: US Congressmans' SICK Christmas GUNS Photo-Days After School Shooting

Thomas Massie: US Republican Congressman Condemned For Christmas Guns Photo-Days After School Shooting

A US Republican congressman has faced a barrage of criticism after he posted a Christmas photograph of his family posing with military-style rifles, just days after a deadly school shooting.

BBC News 6 DEC 2021.

Thomas Massie's photo was posted on Twitter a few days after a Michigan school shooting left four students dead

Kentucky's Republican representative, Thomas Massie, tweeted the photo with the caption:

"Merry Christmas! ps. Santa, please bring ammo".

The post has been condemned by a host of families affected by gun violence, plus figures on both sides of politics.

He has been contacted for comment.

In the wake of the controversy, Mr Massie has retweeted messages of support, and also those criticising him - directly engaging with several Twitter users who said he was "tone deaf" and "insensitive".

In response to one person who wrote the "bar was on the floor, but somehow you managed to tunnel underneath it," the 50-year-old quipped that "The BAR is under the couch," referring to a type of military assault rifle.

The photo was posted days after a school shooting in Michigan which left four teenagers dead and seven people injured after a 15-year-old student allegedly went on a rampage using his father's gun.

The suspect's parents have been charged with involuntary manslaughter for failing to heed multiple warning signs before the tragedy. They have plead not guilty.

It is was the latest in a string of shootings in the US that has lead to fierce debate about gun rights and laws.

The families of students killed in previous school shootings have spoken out against the post.

Fred Guttenberg's daughter Jaime was killed in the Parkland high school shooting in Florida in 2018 - one of the worst school attacks the US has seen.

He posted a photo of Jaime, and also a photo of her gravestone under the congressman's post.

Manuel Oliver, whose son Joaquin also died in the Parkland attack, told CNN that the tweet was in "the worst taste ever".

Several figures from the Republican party also condemned the post.

Adam Kinzinger, a Republican congressman from Illinois, mocked him for displaying a "gun fetish" with the post.

And Anthony Scaramucci, who was briefly former President Donald Trump's communications director, tweeted that he would fund any potential candidates running against Mr Massie in next year's congressional elections.

Despite the criticism, several prominent names in US conservative circles have defended the congressman.

The Colorado representative and gun-rights activist, Lauren Boebert tweeted:

"That's my kind of Christmas card".

Another Republican, Jose Castillo wrote

"All I want for Christmas is... more elected officials like Thomas Massie."

Rep. Massie draws a handgun from his pocket during a rally in support of the Second Amendment on 31 January, 2020

Mr Massie was first elected to be Kentucky's congressional representative in 2012 and is closely associated with the libertarian wing of the Republican party.

He is a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment - the right to keep and bear arms - and has always strongly opposed any gun control initiatives, saying in interviews that they would not stop school massacres.

In April, he introduced a bill to lower the age to buy handguns from 21 to 18.

His office has not yet responded to the BBC's request for comment on his Twitter post.

Attacks in US Become Deadlier

In 2020, gun violence killed nearly 20,000 Americans - more than any other year in at least two decades - according to data from the Gun Violence Archive.

President Biden sets out how many Americans are shot and killed on average each day

Movies Anorther US MASS Shooting: Sacramento-At Least Six Dead

Sacramento Shooting: At Least Six Dead in Centre of California State Capital

At least six people have been killed and 12 injured in a shooting in the centre of Sacramento, police in California's state capital say.

BBC News 4 APR 2022.

People fled through the streets after rapid gunfire rang out in an area packed with restaurants and bars in the early hours of Sunday.

Police nearby responded to the gunfire and came across a "very large crowd", police chief Katherine Lester said.

No suspect is yet in custody in the wake of the shootings.

"This is a really tragic situation," Chief Lester said.

The officer said investigators had arrived at the scene and urged the public to come forward with any information that might help identify those responsible.

Sacramento city councillor Katie Valenzuela: "I'm heartbroken and I'm outraged"

The shooting took place at around 02:00 (09:00 GMT) near the junction of 10th Street and K Street, in an area that leads to the Golden One Center, where the Sacramento Kings play basketball.

It is also only a few streets from the state Capitol building.

Pamela Harris said her daughter called her at 02:15 to say that her 38-year-old son, Sergio, had been shot and killed outside a nightclub.

"She said he was dead. I just collapsed," Harris told Reuters at the scene of the shooting.

"I cannot leave here now until I know what's going on. I'm not going anywhere. It seems like a dream."

Kay Harris, 32, said she was asleep when one of her family members called to say they thought her brother had been killed. She said she thought he was at London, a nightclub on 10th Street, the Associated Press reports.

She said she has been to the club a few times and described it as a place for "the younger crowd".

Pamela Harris went to the crime scene on Sunday for news of her son

Community activist Berry Accius reached the scene at about 02:30 after a city council member called him about the shooting.

"The first thing I saw was like victims," he was quoted as saying by CBS News.

"I saw a young girl with a whole bunch of blood in her body, a girl taking off glass from her, a young girl screaming saying, 'They killed my sister.' A mother running up, 'Where's my son, has my son been shot?'"

The incident is certain to inflame the ongoing debate about gun violence and the prevalence of lethal weapons in US society.

Mayor Darrell Steinberg tweeted that the numbers of dead and wounded were "difficult to comprehend".

"Rising gun violence is the scourge of our city, state and nation, and I support all actions to reduce it," he said.

In a tearful statement to reporters, city council member Katie Valenzuela - who represents the district where the shooting happened - said: "I'm heartbroken and I'm outraged."

"Our community deserves better than this," she said, pledging to do whatever she can so young people "don't get shot down on K Street when they're out trying to have a good time".

Firearms are involved in approximately 40,000 deaths a year in the US, including suicides, according to the Gun Violence Archive website.

Movies US Mass Shootings: Buffalo Demented KILLER Now on Suicide Watch

US Mass Shooting -White Supremacist Shot 13 -10 DEAD at New York Supermarket

White supremacist 18, DENIES killing ten people - including hero cop who tried to stop him - as he is arraigned after livestreaming mass shooting at Buffalo supermarket in black area with 'n****r' scrawled on his rifle

Daily Mail UK.15 MAY 2022.

White supremacist Payton Gendron, 18, was arrested for shooting 10 people dead in a supermarket in a predominantly-black area of upstate New York, and live-streamed the horrific massacre. Gendron, scrawled the n-word on his rifle before carrying out Saturday's massacre at Tops Friendly Supermarket in Buffalo.

A total of 13 people were shot, 10 fatally. The other three are being treated for their injuries, and cops say 11 of those shot were black. The gunman lived-streamed the assault as he opened fire inside the Tops Friendly Supermarket, at 1275 Jefferson Avenue, at about 2.30pm. Gendron, filmed wearing a military uniform, has been taken into custody by the Buffalo Police Department. He has been described as 'heavily-armed.'

Eric County District Attorney John Flynn says the shooter could be charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder as early as Saturday night. Gendron lived hours away from the scene of the massacre. He also refused to comment on an unconfirmed manifesto said to have been written by the shooter, which has been circulating online. President Joe Biden is keeping close track of the developments in the tragedy, according to White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

Payton traveled from his home in Conklin, New York, to carry out the atrocity. He lived there with his father Paul (pictured unpixellated) and mom Pamela, pictured in red, both of whom are engineers for the New York Department of Transportation

Gendron shot four people outside the store, three fatally, the commissioner said. He then went into the supermarket where he exchanged gunfire with Salter. The ex-cop shot at him multiple times but the bullets hit the shooter's body arm and left him unfazed, the commissioner said.

Gendron then killed killed Salter.

A further six victims are believed to have been shot dead inside.

Salter's son, Aaron Salter Jr., hailed his father for trying to stop the maniac gunman.

'Today is a shock,' he told the Daily Beast. 'I'm pretty sure he saved some lives today. He's a hero.'

The killings were broadcast live on streaming site Twitch, although the clip was removed within two minutes of its posting.

Ruth Whitfield, the 86-year-old mother of retired Buffalo fire commissioner Garnell W. Witfield, was also killed during the shooting spree.

'My mom was the consummate mom. mother was a mother to the motherless. She was a blessing to all of us. She loved God and taught us to do the same thing,' the former commissioner told the Buffalo News.

Ruth Witfield, 86, the mother of former Buffalo fire commissioner Garnell Witfield was also killed in the murder spree

New York Governor Kathy Hochul blasted Gendron's 'demented' killings and called for a crackdown on social media firms, who she said effectively acted as an 'accomplice' by letting mass-shooters like Gendron glorify their crimes.

President Joe Biden expressed his condolences to the families who lost loved-ones in the attack and denounced the white supremacy as 'repugnant.'

'Tonight, we grieve for the families of ten people whose lives were senselessly taken and everyone who is suffering the physical and emotional wounds of this horrific shooting,' Biden said. 'A racially motivated hate crime is abhorrent to the very fabric of this nation. Any act of domestic terrorism, including an act perpetrated in the name of a repugnant white nationalist ideology, is antithetical to everything we stand for in America. Hate must have no safe harbor. We must do everything in our power to end hate-fueled domestic terrorism.'

'This was pure evil, it was straight up a racially motivated hate crime,' the Erie County Sheriff John Garcia said.

Eleven of the 13 victims were black.

Before the shooting Gendron allegedly posted a 180-page manifesto online espousing the paranoid white supremacist theory that people of color were replacing white people in America. He also refers to other mass shootings carried out to further racist ideology like Dylan Roof, who who killed nine people in a black church in South Carolina and New Zealand lunatic Brenton Tarrant, who murdered 51 people in mosque.

The suspected gunman, killed ten people and wounded three others in a Buffalo supermarket

'This is the worst nightmare that any community can face, and we are hurting and we are seething right now,' Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said at a news conference. 'The depth of pain that families are feeling and that all of us are feeling right now cannot even be explained.'

The young man drove hours from the white suburban town of Conklin, just outside Binghamton, to the scene of the massacre.

As the shooting unfolded, Gramaglia said, Buffalo police charged into the store and confronted the gunman in the vestibule.

'At that point the suspect put the gun to his own neck. Buffalo police personnel - two patrol officers - talked the suspect into dropping the gun. He dropped the gun, took off some of his tactical gear, surrendered at that point. And he was led outside, put in a police car,' he said.

The video of the arrest seen by DailyMail.com shows police cuffing the suspect and trying to get people away from the scene as several bodies lie motionless on the ground.

The gunman was carrying two rifles and wore a Kevlar helmet, body armor and carried two rifles

'A shooter, it's a mass shooter type s***,' one of the onlookers says as police and emergency responders detain the man in the military uniform.

'Damn, look at him, a young boy,' the onlooker adds as he comments on one of the bodies.

Police then instruct the onlookers to back up as they take control of the situation.

Hours after the shooting, Erica Pugh-Mathews waited outside the police tape wondering what happened to family members who were inside the store.

'We would like to know the status of my aunt, my mother's sister. She was in there with her fiance, they separated and went to different aisles,' she said. 'A bullet barely missed him. He was able to hide in a freezer but he was not able to get to my aunt and does not know where she is. We just would like word either way if she's OK.'

Here's what we know about the fatal shooting at Middle Tennessee State University after the Riverdale High School graduation:

Murfreesboro officials identified the victim in a deadly shooting on Middle Tennessee State University's campus as 18-year-old Hasani Brewer, a 2021 Riverdale High graduate. Another victim was hurt in the shooting, but the Murfreesboro Police Department did not release their name because they are a minor.

Brewer was also known as Sunny Gant.

Spokesman for Murfreesboro Police Department Larry Flowers said a 17-year-old, whose identity is also being shielded, was taken into custody in Clarksville Thursday, Flowers said. He's facing a first-degree murder charge in juvenile court.

"Now the community can rest assured knowing we've got this criminal off the streets," Flowers said.
Shooting followed Riverdale High graduation ceremony

The shooting occurred shortly before 9 p.m., near the tennis courts next to the Murphy Center. It was after the graduation ceremony had concluded and people were leaving.

Rutherford County Schools spokesman James Evans said around 450 students were set to graduate at the ceremony and "several hundred" family members were in attendance.

Shots were reportedly fired at a graduation party in San Bernardino, California, where a 21-year-old man is reported to have died while nine others were injured

Daily Mirror 21 MAY 2022

At least one person has died and nine more were injured after shots were fired at a graduation party in San Bernardino, California.

It happened shortly before midnight local time, with a 21-year-old man, who has not been named, reported to have been killed.

A witness told ABC 7 they had seen a shooter open fire at two young women through a car window.

The onlooker said it appeared that a large group was gathered for a graduation party.

One person was declared dead at the scene, while those injured are not thought to have suffered life-threatening injuries, according to reports.

In a statement the San Bernardino Police Department said: "Upon arrival, officers encountered a large crowd and learned that they were in the area attending a party."
One person died and at least nine were injured in the shooting, it is claimed

Police spokesman Sgt. Equino Thomas told the Los Angeles Times that a preliminary investigation suggests the victims were not intentionally targeted.

Instead it is believed that the shooting resulted from an argument in a crowded room at the party, he said.No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, police have said.

Movies Re: US Mass Shootings: Texas Shooting-19 Children 2 Adults Dead in Primary School Att

Texas Shooting: 19 Children Among Dead in Primary School Attack

Nineteen young children and two adults have died in a shooting at a primary school in south Texas.

BBC News 25 MAY 2022.

The 18-year-old gunman opened fire at Robb Elementary School in the city of Uvalde before he was killed by law enforcement, officials said.

Investigators say the suspect was armed with a handgun, an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and high-capacity magazines.

The teenager is suspected of shooting his grandmother at the start of the rampage.

Local media report he may have been a high school student in the area.

Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Chief of Police Pete Arredondo said the shooting began at 11:32 local time on Tuesday, and that investigators believe the attacker "did act alone during this heinous crime".

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the shooter, whom he named as Salvador Ramos, abandoned a vehicle before entering the school to "horrifically, incomprehensibly" open fire.

One of the adults killed was a teacher, who has been named in US media as Eva Mireles. Her page on the school district's website said she has a daughter in college and loved running and hiking.

Nearly 500 pupils are enrolled in the predominantly Hispanic school around 85 miles (135km) west of the city of San Antonio.

Robb Elementary teaches second, third and fourth grade students, who range in age from seven to 10 years old.

The Associated Press news agency reports that a US Border Patrol official who was nearby when the shooting began rushed into the school and shot and killed the gunman, who was behind a barricade.

Border Patrol is a federal agency that guards US ports of entry. Uvalde, which is fewer than 80 miles from the border with Mexico, is home to a Border Patrol station.

Two border agents were reportedly shot in an exchange with the gunman. One agent was shot in the head, officials say, adding that both were now in a stable condition in hospital.

According to CBS News, the attacker was wearing body armour as he carried out the attack. Another 18-year-old who is suspected of attacking a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, on 14 May was also wearing body armour and carrying a semi-automatic rifle - both of which are commercially available in the US.

The Uvalde Memorial Hospital posted on Facebook earlier that 13 children had been taken to hospital "via ambulances or buses".

A 66-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl were in a critical condition at a hospital in San Antonio, University Health hospital officials say.

Just a few blocks from the Robb Elementary school, a small vigil was held for the victims and survivors of the attack.

Karla Bohman's voice cracked as she told the group about a family friend whose young daughter, a student at the school, was among those still unaccounted for.

"They don't know if she's in surgery or one of the fatalities, but they know she's a victim of some sort because she's missing," Bohman cried. "I can't believe this."

Cheryl Juhasz, a lifelong resident of Uvalde, quietly wept during the prayer.

"You can't comprehend evil like this. No matter where it happens, but it's harder when it happens at home."
The vigil

In a speech from the White House, US President Joe Biden said he was "sick and tired" of responding to mass shootings, as he called for gun control.

"How many scores of little children who witnessed what happened - see their friends die, as if they're in a battlefield, for God's sake," he said. "They'll live with it the rest of their lives."

He ordered that flags at the White House and other US federal buildings be flown at half-mast in honour of the victims in Uvalde.

The last day of classes for students in the school district was scheduled for Thursday. But all classes and activities have now been cancelled for the remainder of the year.

Community members wept at a vigil on Tuesday night

School shootings have become recurring emergencies in the US, with 26 recorded last year, according to EdWeek, an education trade publication.

Active shooter lockdown drills are a common part of the school curriculum, from primary to high school.

The 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut was the deadliest such attack. Twenty of the 26 victims were between the ages of five and six.

Speaking on the floor of the US Senate in Washington DC on Tuesday, Connecticut Democratic Senator Chris Murphy begged his colleagues to pass gun control legislation.

"These kids weren't unlucky," he said. "This only happens in this country. Nowhere else, nowhere else do little kids go to school thinking that they might be shot that day."

But Texas Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican, rejected the calls for gun control. He said restricting the rights of "law-abiding citizens... doesn't work. It's not effective. It doesn't prevent crime."

Guns overtook car crashes to become the leading cause of death for US children and teenagers in 2020, according to data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) last month.

On Monday, an FBI report found that "active shooter" rampage attacks have doubled since the coronavirus began in 2020.

Inside Texas Gun Meet Where Excited Boy Picks Out Assault Rifle For 17th Birthday

Austin Whitehead, 17, attends the National Rifle Association conference to select an AK21 assault rifle that he will be given for his next birthday present - meanwhile, in a town 300 miles away, 19 children and two teachers lie dead

Daily Mirror 29 MAY 2022

In a Texas conference centre teeming with gun lovers, an excited 17-year-old is picking his next birthday present – an AK21 assault rifle.

Austin Whitehead is here at the National Rifle Association annual convention in Houston despite being too young to buy the products on display.

But guns have been around all his life, so he doesn’t bat an eyelid as people pose for pictures with Kalashnikovs and scoop bullets into plastic bags.

Later, Austin will be among the crowd reaching fever pitch as the convention’s main speaker Donald Trump hollers: “The only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.”

Meanwhile, in a town 300 miles away, 19 children and two teachers lie dead, massacred by a teenager with an assault rifle he got for his 18th birthday.

Ghost Guns are soon to be banned from the conference

Austin senses the comparison. He has a brother aged eight, the same age as some of the victims in Uvalde.

But he says the tragedy has only made him all the more determined to get his hands on his birthday gift. “I’m a gun enthusiast,” he explains.

“My dad is in the military. What you do with a gun depends on the person. They can be used to protect people or to kill them.

“I want to have that choice. I have two little brothers, and I want to protect them.”

Mirror reporter Geraldine Mckelvie with a rifle

The Uvalde atrocity made no difference to the NRA. Despite pressure to cancel, the three-day gun show goes on though guests such as American Pie singer Don McLean withdrew as a mark of respect.

Daniel Defense, the firm that made the rifle used by killer Salvador Ramos, hastily pulled its sponsorship.

The NRA trumpets the event as “14 acres of guns and gear”. At one stall, I’m urged to to try a Ł400 M&P Sport Series rifle, apparently good for beginners.

At another I’m given a free baseball cap and told if I like the company’s Facebook page, I could win a gun.

Gun owners scooped up rounds of ammunition at the convention

Most shocking of all is a stand advertising “ghost guns” – untraceable firearms you assemble yourself that can be bought without background checks.

Later this year, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will start regulating them.

A sign says: “Biden and ATF changed the law effective August 2022. Ghost guns will be illegal... get yours now.”

Handguns featuring 'Make America Great Again' inscriptions were on display at the event

Gun store owners Henry and Diana Orr from South Carolina tell us they’ve made the 14-hour trip here to stand up for their right to bear arms, enshrined in the US constitution’s second amendment.

Henry, 61, says: “We got to defend our second amendment rights and the NRA is our best supporter. ”

Diana, 60, is adamant the Uvalde tragedy would have been prevented if the two slain teachers – Irma Garcia, 48, and Eva Mireles, 44 – had been armed while they taught. be armed.
By choice – they have to feel it in their hearts.”

There is only one politician Diana truly trusts to ensure gun laws aren’t tightened. “Oh my gosh, I love Trump,” she says. “If he runs in 2024, he’ll win,” Henry adds.

Their views are shared by Virgil Patterson, 79, a former builder from Houston. We meet him as we wait for the ex-President’s speech. Virgil is wearing a Trump 2024 hat with the slogan “Take America Back”.

Some customers travelled hours to attend

Pick 'n' Mix bullets for sale

He says: ”Trump’s not a politician. The man cares about his country.” Virgil has 30 guns at home and taught a granddaughter to shoot when she was 10.

“The second amendment is important to me,” he says. “It’s a matter of freedom. You don’t have that right in England – it got taken from you. I have had to use my gun a couple of times but I haven’t had to fire it.

“People tried to take something from me but then they saw my gun.”

Bookkeeper Melinda Teitelbaum, 67, from Fort Worth near Dallas, adds: “I love guns. It’s really unfortunate what happened a few days ago but the problem is not guns, it’s the character of the person. All of these horrific events – there has never been one carried out by an NRA member.

“It’s a sickness. It does not matter how many laws you have, you cannot control mental illness. I would absolutely arm teachers.”

Outside,as we leave, not everyone is feeling so inspired. Protestors are gathered with signs saying “no guns!” and “go home!” Among them is teacher Nathaniel Gomez, 35.queue, most people we speak to express horror about the tragedy in Uvalde, saying they would only use their guns in self defence.

Then a man walks past wearing a “Kill a Commie for Mommy” T-shirt.

One of the many pistols displayed at the event

We take our seats for the series of warm-up speakers. Texas Senator Ted Cruz blames Tuesday’s tragic events on everything from one-parent families to video games.

A middle-aged woman in the row behind me begins to jump up and down in agreement. “Exactly!” she shouts.

Trump is ushered on stage to the strains of Republican anthem God Bless the USA and everyone joins the standing ovation.

No one mentions that country music icon Lee Greenwood, who wrote the song, cancelled his appearance out of respect for the Uvalde families.

Crowds queued up for the controversial convention

TRUMP reads out the names of the Uvalde dead to the sound of a clanging bell.
(TRUMP has shares in the NFA)

In his speech he says security in schools must be beefed up.
“There is no sign more inviting to a mass killer than one declaring a gun-free zone,” he says, to rapturous applause.” And if he runs in 2024?
“I would crack down on violent crime like never before,” he vows.

“Four more years!” screams the old man in front of me, waving h
is walking stick. An hour later it ends with a promise to “take back that great, beautiful White House that we love.”

He blinks back tears as he says: “I teach 10-year-olds. I cried when I heard. It’s just so messed up. You honk your horn, you might get killed. There are so many idiots with guns

Outside,as we leave, not everyone is feeling so inspired. Protestors are gathered with signs saying “no guns!” and “go home!” Among them is teacher Nathaniel Gomez, 35.

Matthew McConaughey Pleas For Gun Control at White House

10 Jun 2022 BBC News

Three weeks after a school shooting in Texas, which left 19 children and two teachers dead, actor Matthew McConaughey has spoken at the White House to advocate for "responsible gun ownership".

The Hollywood star, who was born in Uvalde where the attack happened, said the US had a "window of opportunity" for "real change".

The actor pointed to a pair of green Converse, held by his wife Camila Alves, which were used to identify a schoolgirl who was killed in the massacre.

US Gun Control: Cautious Welcome to Bipartisan Deal on New Safety Measures

US campaigners have welcomed a potential cross-party deal on gun safety reforms but stressed the proposals do not go far enough.

BBC News 13 JUN 2022

Tens of thousands of protesters rallied across the US on Saturday to call for stricter gun laws

"This is progress even if small," said David Hogg, a survivor of the 2018 Parkland school shooting in Florida.

Ex-lawmaker Gabrielle Giffords, injured in a 2011 shooting in Arizona, said it was an "important step forward".

The plans include tougher checks for buyers under the age of 21 and cracking down on illegal gun purchases.

They were announced by a cross-party group of US senators on Sunday. Crucially, the proposals are supported by 10 Republicans, meaning they have the numbers to be voted into law.

President Joe Biden also said the plans were "steps in the right direction" but they fell far short of what he and many Democrats have been calling for.

Recent attempts to tighten gun laws in the US - which has the highest rate of firearms deaths among the world's wealthy nations - have failed to get the required support in Congress.

Tens of thousands of protesters rallied across the US on Saturday to call for stricter gun laws in the wake of two mass shootings.

"It's a great first step but that's just what it is," Mr Hogg told the BBC. "No single policy is going to stop every shooting but this policy could stop the next Parkland and that's a good step."

Ms Giffords, who suffered a severe brain injury, also gave a tentative welcome to the proposals. Writing on Twitter, she said the agreement "could be the first time in 30 years that Congress takes major action on gun safety.

"This deal represents that it's still possible to cut through politics and deliver for the American people," she said.

Moms Demand Action, a gun control advocacy organisation, tweeted: "Our grassroots army is ready to fight like hell to make sure it becomes law. 26 years for federal action on gun safety is unacceptable."

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, said he was "pleased" by the development and that he wanted to move a bill quickly to a Senate vote once legislative details were worked out.

The Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell stopped short of endorsing the proposals but said they showed "the value of dialogue and co-operation".

The National Rifle Association of America (NRA), a powerful gun rights advocacy group, said it would respond once the full text of the reform was released.

But the group stressed it would "continue to oppose any effort to insert gun control policies, initiatives that override constitutional due process protections & efforts to deprive law-abiding citizens of their fundamental right to protect themselves/loved ones into this or any other legislation".

Despite the high rate of firearms deaths, the US is a country where many cherish gun rights that are protected by the Constitution's Second Amendment to "keep and bear arms".

These are the first gun safety laws to receive bipartisan support of this kind in decades, with previous attempts by Democrats for strengthened controls frustrated by Republicans.

Attempts to tighten the laws in the wake of a previous school shooting at Sandy Hook in Connecticut nearly a decade ago - in which 20 children and six adults were killed - failed to get the required votes in Congress.

The Senate, or upper chamber of Congress, is currently split - with 50 Democrats and 50 Republicans - and legislation must have 60 votes to overcome a manoeuvre known as the filibuster.

Ten of the 20 senators who proposed the new measures are Republicans, meaning the proposals have the numbers needed to overcome the filibuster.

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy said a "substantial" part of the deal had been nailed down by negotiators, allowing the drafting of legislation to get under way on Monday, Reuters reported.

The US leads with nearly 79% of all homicides occurring with guns.

Thumbs down re: US MASS Shootings: Colorado Shooting Suspect Named & In Custody

Republican Senate Gun Negotiator Walks OUT of Talks

Texas Senator John Cornyn has played a key role in drafting the framework of a proposed firearms bill following mass shootings in Texas and New York.

BBC News 17 JUN 2022.

The lead Republican negotiator for what would be the US Senate's first gun control bill in a generation has walked out of talks with Democrats.

Leaving Washington, he said: "I'm through talking."
>>> $$$$ BEFORE LIVES....

The plans include tougher checks for buyers under the age of 21 and cracking down on illegal gun purchases.

The proposals have shown some rare cross-party cooperation on the issue of gun control, but still fall far short of what many Democrats and activists have been calling for.

Recent attempts to tighten gun laws in the US - which has the highest rate of firearms deaths among the world's wealthy nations - have failed to get the required support in Congress.

The flurry of action comes after 19 young children and two adults were killed at a school in Uvalde, Texas, less than two weeks after a racially motivated shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, left 10 dead.

But Mr Cornyn's walk-out has placed a question mark over the legislation's future. Axios, a political outlet, reported earlier on Thursday that conservative colleagues of the Texas senator are frustrated at his handling of the talks and want time to consider the text of any proposal before it is introduced to the chamber floor.

The legislative window to pass a new law is narrowing as November's mid-term elections loom, but the lead Democratic negotiator said he was still hopeful the bill could go to a vote next week.

A bipartisan group of senators has been working to draft the text of a bill for lawmakers to vote on before they leave for a two-week 4 July recess.

But they have become bogged down in recent days, as Democrats and Republicans disagree on provisions that would strip certain Americans of their guns.

Mr Cornyn told reporters on Thursday that now is the time for action: "I don't know what they have in mind, but I'm through talking."

Earlier in the day, he warned that time was running out to reach an agreement.

"We're about run out of our rope here, and we got to make some final decisions today if we're going to be able to get this on the floor next week," he told radio host Hugh Hewitt.

Connecticut Democrat Chris Murphy and North Carolina Republican Thom Tillis told reporters later on Thursday that the group was still inching towards an agreement.

"To land a deal like this is difficult. It comes with a lot of emotions," said Mr Murphy, who is leading the Democratic negotiations.

"It comes with political risk to both sides. But we're close enough that we should be able to get there."

Senators say disagreements remain over incentives for states to enact so-called red flag laws, which allow police to seize guns from people deemed dangerous. Talks are also ongoing to close the "boyfriend loophole", which permits abusive partners to buy guns.

If both the Senate and House of Representatives can agree on a bill, it would go to President Joe Biden's desk to be signed into law.

President Biden has said the plans are a step in the right direction but fall far short of what he called for.

Similar efforts in the wake of a previous school shooting at Sandy Hook in Connecticut nearly a decade ago - in which 20 children and six adults were killed - failed to get the required number of votes in Congress.

The Senate, or upper chamber of Congress, is currently split - with 50 Democrats and 50 Republicans - and legislation must have 60 votes to overcome a blocking manoeuvre known as the filibuster.

Ten of the 20 senators who proposed the measures are Republicans, meaning the new legislation could reach that threshold.

Thumbs Up re: US MASS Shootings: Colorado Shooting Suspect Named & In Custody

US Gun Control: Bill Clears First Hurdle in US Senate

The US Senate has taken a first step towards passing what has been called the most significant new gun controls in a generation.

BBC News 22 JUN 2022.

Senators voted to speed up the passage of the bipartisan bill, meaning it could be signed into law next week.

Although significant, the proposals fall far short of what many Democrats and activists have called for in the wake of a spate of mass shootings.

The measures include tougher background checks for buyers younger than 21.

The bill calls for funding to encourage states to implement "red flag" laws to remove firearms from people considered a threat. The act also includes $15bn (Ł12.2bn) in federal funding for mental health programs and school security upgrades.

And it closes the so-called "boyfriend loophole" by blocking gun sales to those convicted of abusing unmarried intimate partners.

It is the first time in decades that proposed gun safety legislation has received this level of support from both Republican and Democratic party senators.

Tuesday evening's Senate vote - which was procedural - passed 64 to 34 in less than two hours after the final text was circulated.

Some 14 Republicans voted to advance the bill, suggesting the legislation could have enough support to clear the Senate in full.

It will also need to be passed by the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives before making its way to President Joe Biden's desk.

Senator Chris Murphy, the lead Democrat in the talks, said on the Senate floor that the bill "will become the most significant piece of anti-gun-violence legislation Congress will have passed in 30 years".

Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement: "This bipartisan gun-safety legislation is progress and will save lives. While it is not everything we want, this legislation is urgently-needed."

His Republican counterpart, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, described the legislation as "a common sense package" in a statement pledging his own support.

The National Rife Association (NRA) opposed the bill, saying in a statement that it "does little to truly address violent crime" and "can be abused to restrict lawful gun purchases".

President Biden earlier this month said the proposals were "steps in the right direction" but are still not enough.....

He has pushed for bigger reforms - including a ban on assault rifles, which were used in the Texas and Buffalo mass shootings - or at least an increase in the age at which they can be purchased.

The last significant federal gun control legislation was passed in 1994, banning the manufacture for civilian use of assault rifles and large capacity ammunition clips, but expired a decade later.

The US has the highest rate of firearms deaths among the world's wealthy nations. But it is also a country where many cherish gun rights that are protected by the Constitution's Second Amendment to "keep and bear arms".

Previous efforts lead by Democrats to strengthen US gun control laws have been hindered by Republicans.

Nearly a decade ago, attempts to tighten US gun control laws after the Sandy Hook school shooting in Connecticut - in which 20 children and six adults were killed - failed to get enough votes in Congress.

The Senate, or upper chamber of Congress, is currently split - with 50 Democrats and 50 Republicans - and legislation must have 60 votes to overcome a manoeuvre known as the filibuster - tactical delaying.

Ten of the 20 senators who came up with the framework for the new measures are Republicans, meaning the proposals had the numbers needed to progress.

Thumbs Up re: US MASS Shootings: Colorado Shooting Suspect Named & In Custody

US Senate Passes First Gun Control Bill in Decades

The US Senate has passed a gun control bill - the most significant firearms legislation in nearly 30 years.

BBC News 24 JUN 2022.

The proposals fall far short of what many Democrats and activists have called for

Fifteen Republicans joined Democrats in the upper chamber of Congress to approve the measure by 65 votes to 33.

It follows mass shootings last month at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, and a primary school in Uvalde, Texas, that left 31 people dead.

The bill will now have to pass in the House of Representatives before President Biden can sign it into law.

In a statement released after the vote, the president called on members of the House to "promptly vote on this bipartisan bill and send it to my desk".

"Tonight, after 28 years of inaction, bipartisan members of Congress came together to heed the call of families across the country and passed legislation to address the scourge of gun violence in our communities," Mr Biden said.

"Families in Uvalde and Buffalo — and too many tragic shootings before — have demanded action. And tonight, we acted."

Speaker Nancy Pelosi has vowed to take the bill through the House quickly, despite Republican leader Kevin McCarthy urging his members to vote against the bill.

"First thing tomorrow morning, the Rules Committee will meet to advance this life-saving legislation to the floor," Ms Pelosi said after the vote.

Although significant, the proposals fall far short of what many Democrats and activists have called for.

The reforms include tougher background checks for buyers younger than 21 and $15bn (Ł12.2bn) in federal funding for mental health programs and school security upgrades.

It also calls for funding to encourage states to implement "red flag" laws to remove firearms from people considered a threat.

And it closes the so-called "boyfriend loophole" by blocking gun sales to those convicted of abusing unmarried intimate partners.

The bill is also significant because it is the first time in decades that proposed reforms have received this level of support from both Democrats and Republicans. Historically, efforts to strengthen US gun laws have been blocked by the Republican party.

All 50 Democrats, including the party's most conservative members, Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, were joined by deal-making Republicans, including the party's Senate Leader Mitch McConnell and close Trump ally Lindsey Graham.

A host of traditionally conservative-leaning advocacy organisations, including the Fraternal Order of Police and the International Association of Chiefs of Police, also backed the bill.

Republican Senator John Cornyn of Texas, who co-led the negotiations with Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut, said on the chamber floor that the bill would make Americans safer.

"I don't believe in doing nothing in the face of what we saw in Uvalde and what we've seen in far too many communities," Mr Cornyn said.

Texas Senator John Cornyn became a leading Republican voice for a compromise deal in the wake of the Uvalde shooting

"Doing nothing is an abdication of our responsibility as representatives of the American people here in the United States Senate."

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said: "This is not a cure-all for the ways gun violence affects our nation, but it is a long overdue step in the right direction."

However, two-thirds of Republicans opposed the legislation, and all of those who backed it, except for Alaska's Lisa Murkowski and Indiana's Todd Young, will not face voters this year or have announced their intention not to seek re-election.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz, who is widely tipped to seek the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, condemned the bill as an attempt to "to try to disarm law-abiding citizens rather than take serious measures to protect our children".

'The fight of our lifetime'

Gun safety group March For Our Lives - founded by survivors of the 2018 Parkland school shooting in Florida - welcomed the advancement of the bill.

"We know there's A LOT more work to be done to end this epidemic. But a lot of hard work got us to tonight. We refuse to quit or be silenced. Ending gun violence is the fight of our lifetime," the group tweeted.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) has opposed the bill, and argued that it will not stop the violence.

President Biden earlier this month said the proposals were "steps in the right direction" but are still not enough.

He has pushed for bigger reforms - including a ban on assault rifles, which were used in the Texas and Buffalo mass shootings last month - or at least an increase in the age at which they can be purchased. The gunman in the Texas shooting is believed to have purchased two semi-automatic rifles days after turning 18.

The US has the highest rate of firearms deaths among the world's wealthy nations - more than 20,900 people have been killed in gun violence in the US this year, including through homicide and suicide, according to the Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit research group.

But it is also a country where many cherish gun rights that are protected by the Constitution's Second

Amendment to "keep and bear arms".

The last significant federal gun control legislation was passed in 1994, banning the manufacture for civilian use of assault rifles and large capacity magazines - but it expired a decade later.

After the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting in Connecticut - in which 20 children and six adults were killed - attempts to tighten the laws failed to get enough votes in Congress.

Thursday's vote happened hours after the Supreme Court struck down a New York law restricting who can legally carry a gun - effectively expanding gun rights and illustrating the deep divide in the United States over the issue.

The court found that New York's requirement for residents to prove "proper cause" - or a good reason - to carry concealed firearms in public violates the Constitution.

Mr McConnell said with the court's decision, combined with Thursday's legislation, made for "two landmark victories".

Chicago: At Least Six Dead in Shooting at Suburban Fourth of July Parade

6 dead, 30 hurt in shooting at Chicago-area 4 July parade

4 Jul 2022 ITV News

At least six people died and 30 were injured after a shooting at a Fourth of July parade in a Chicago suburb, police said.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the parade in Highland Park began around 10am, but it was suddenly halted 10 minutes later after shots were fired...

A gunman on a rooftop opened fire on an Independence Day parade in suburban Chicago on Monday, killing at least six people, wounding at least 30 and sending hundreds of marchers, parents with strollers and children on bicycles fleeing in terror, police said.

The July 4 shooting was just the latest to shatter the rituals of American life. Schools, churches, grocery stores and now community parades have all become killing grounds in recent months. This time, the bloodshed came as the nation tried to find cause to celebrate its founding and the bonds that still hold it together.

“It is devastating that a celebration of America was ripped apart by our uniquely American plague,” Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker said at a news conference.

“I’m furious because it does not have to be this way... while we celebrate the Fourth of July just once a year, mass shootings have become a weekly — yes, weekly — American tradition.”

The shooting occurred at a spot on the parade route where many residents had staked out prime viewing points early in the day for the annual celebration. Dozens of fired bullets sent hundreds of parade-goers — some visibly bloodied — fleeing.

They left a trail of abandoned items that showed everyday life suddenly, violently disrupted: A half-eaten bag of potato chips; a box of chocolate cookies spilled onto the grass; a child’s Chicago Cubs cap.

“There’s no safe place,” said Highland Park resident Barbara Harte, 73, who had stayed away from the parade fearing a mass shooting, but later ventured from her home.

Authorities said a 22-year-old man named as a person of interest in the shooting was taken into police custody Monday evening after an hours long manhunt.

Police believe there was only one shooter and warned that he should still be considered armed and dangerous.

Highland Park Shooting: Man Arrested After 4 July mass Shooting

US police have arrested a suspect after six people were killed in a mass shooting at an Independence Day parade in Highland Park, Illinois.

BBC News 5 JUL 2022.

Robert E Crimo III, 22, was detained after a brief chase, police said.

The gunman climbed on to a roof, shooting randomly at spectators using a high-powered rifle.

It is the latest mass shooting to hit the US - there has been one in every week of 2022. President Joe Biden said he was "shocked" by the violence.

Hours later, two police officers were wounded in a shooting in Philadelphia during a Fourth of July fireworks display.

Mr Crimo was detained after a manhunt. He was referred to as a "person of interest" in Monday's shooting, but after his arrest police said they believed he was responsible.

The gunman opened fire at the parade, near the city of Chicago, at around 10:15 local time (15:15 GMT), just a few minutes after it began.

The event was scheduled to include floats, marching bands, and community entertainment as part of the city's Independence Day celebrations.

But what should have been one of the happiest days of the year quickly turned to panic, with pushchairs, purses and lawn chairs left discarded on the street as crowds fled from the scene. Some witnesses said they thought the sound of gunfire was fireworks.

The gunman fired at members of the public from the rooftop of a nearby shop, where police recovered "evidence of a firearm."

Annotated image taken after the shooting showing the rooftop used by the gunman and the parade route

Five adults were killed at the scene, as well as a further victim who the local coroner said died in a nearby hospital. At least two dozen others were injured.

One of those who died has been named as Nicolas Toledo, a man in his late 70s, who was only there because he requires full-time care and his family did not want to miss the event.

"We went to have a nice family day out - and then suddenly all this gunfire happens," said Anand P, who was there during the parade.

"At the time I personally wanted to believe it was a car backfiring. Then people started running - so we start running."

Another witness, Noel Hara, described how he was having breakfast at Starbucks after dropping off his son at the parade, when the chaos unfolded.

"About 30 people suddenly came rushing in screaming and we were locked into the Starbucks bathroom," Mr Hara told the BBC.

"Moments later, they evacuated us from the Starbucks because they thought the shooter was trying to get in the back door."

No charges have been filed against Mr Crimo and there is no indication of any motive.

Social media firms suspended accounts apparently belonging to Mr Crimo, who posted rap videos under an alias as well as videos depicting shootings, gun violence and other violent themes.

He also posted pictures of himself draped in a Donald Trump flag and a video of him greeting Mr Trump's motorcade at an airport.

The attack in Highland Park comes just a month after deadly shootings in Uvalde, Texas and Buffalo, New York.

Spectators abandoned their belongings in the panic that followed the shooting

Illinois Governor Jay Robert Pritzker warned that mass shootings were becoming an "American tradition".

"There are going to be people who are going to say that today is not the day, that now is not the time to talk about guns. I'm telling you there is no better day and no better time then right here and right now," the Democratic governor said.

President Biden vowed to keep fighting "the epidemic of gun violence" in the country.

"I'm not going to give up," he said, speaking outside the White House in Washington DC.

Last week, the president signed the first significant federal bill on gun safety in nearly 30 years.

It imposes tougher checks on young buyers and encourages states to remove guns from people considered a threat - but critics say the measures don't go far enough.

Another Shooting-Two Police Officers Shot at Philadelphia Fourth of July Celebration

5 Jul 2022 Guardian News

Two Philadelphia police officers working at the city’s Fourth of July celebration suffered graze wounds when shots rang out late Monday night, causing scores of frightened people to flee the scene on foot. It's not clear what sparked the shooting, which occurred around 9:45 p.m. Monday in front of the Philadelphia Art Museum, or if either officer was the intended target.

One officer suffered a wound to the forehead — with officials saying the bullet was found in the officer’s hat — while the other was wounded in the shoulder. Both officers were treated at a hospital and were later released. No other injuries were reported in the incident and no arrests have been made.

Investigators have not yet determined where the shots were fired from or how many were fired. Speaking with reporters Monday night after the shooting, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said the increasing violence in the city has left him “looking forward to not being mayor.” He also cited frustration over efforts to toughen gun laws. “This is a gun country. It’s crazy. We are the most armed country in world history and we are one of the least safe," Kenney said. “I’m waiting for something bad to happen all the time. I’ll be happy when I’m not mayor and I can enjoy some stuff."

Earlier in the day in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park, a gunman on a rooftop opened fire on families waving flags and children riding bikes at a Fourth of July parade, killing six people and wounding more than 36

Texas Shooting: Uvalde Report Finds Systemic Failures by Authorities

A report into the Uvalde school shooting in Texas that killed 21 people has found "systemic failures and egregiously poor decision making" by those involved in the response.

BBC 18 Jul 2022

The committee of state legislators highlighted a lack of leadership and urgency, describing a "lackadaisical approach" by authorities at the scene.

Nearly 400 officers rushed to the site, but police waited over an hour to confront the attacker.

The report was published on Sunday.

It was hand-delivered to victims' families before being made public.

The 18-year-old shooter targeted Robb Elementary School in Uvalde on 24 May, killing 19 children and two teachers.

Teachers died trying to save their pupils

The Texas House of Representatives committee believes the nearly-80 page report to be the most complete telling so far of what happened during and after the attack.

It found no single "villain", other than the attacker, in the course of its investigation.

Instead, it concluded that there were multiple failures of responsibility from a number of authorities, including numerous law enforcement agencies and the school itself.

'Void of Leadership'

The report heavily criticised the actions of the various agencies on the scene, accusing them of failing to prioritise "saving the lives of innocent victims over their own safety".

Despite nearly 400 officers rushing to the school, police waited well over an hour before confronting and killing the attacker - an "unacceptably long period of time" according to the report.

"We do not know at this time whether responders could have saved more lives by shortening that delay," the report adds.

The report also highlights a "void of leadership" - an apparent lack of anyone in charge which it says "could have contributed to the loss of life".

The Uvalde schools police chief Pete Arredondo wrote the district's active shooter response plan which assigns himself as incident commander, but testified that he did not consider himself to be in charge on the day.

The general view of witnesses interviewed for the report was either that Mr Arredondo was in charge, or that they could not tell who was in charge of a scene described by many as "chaos".

Mr Arredondo was placed on administrative leave last month and has since resigned.

However, the report points out that there were responders from numerous agencies on the scene - many better trained and better equipped than the school district police - who could have helped to take control of the situation.

Attacker Entered 'Unimpeded'

The criticism of the school centres around its lack of discipline in following security procedures designed to prevent such attacks.

The report said the school had a culture of leaving doors unlocked or propped open, sometimes to allow easier access for substitute teachers who didn't have keys.

The lock on room 111 - where much of the violence occurred - did not always work, the report found, but although the fault was widely known about it was not properly reported.

Because of these failures, the attacker was able to enter the school building and the classrooms unimpeded, and probably killed most of his victims before any responders set foot in the building.

"Of the approximately 142 rounds the attacker fired inside the building, it is almost certain that he rapidly fired over 100 of those rounds before any officer entered," the report says.

Earlier this week leaked CCTV footage from Uvalde was published by a local newspaper, showing the gunman's arrival and police waiting 77 minutes to confront him.

But it was published days before officials said they had planned to show the families or release it publicly.

Parkland School Shooting: Gunman Faces Death Penalty as Trial Opens

A gunman who killed 17 people at his former high school has gone on trial in Florida, with jurors set to decide whether he faces the death penalty or life in prison.

BBC News 19 JUL 2022.

Fred Guttenberg, who lost his daughter Jaime in the 2018 attack, reacts in court last year

Nikolas Cruz, 23, pleaded guilty last year to 17 counts of first-degree murder over the 2018 Parkland shooting.

As prosecutors seek the death penalty, defence lawyers are pushing for life in prison without parole.

The trial is expected to last four to six months and will be televised.

It is a rare case of a mass shooter appearing before a jury in the US, as they are frequently killed by police or take their own lives. The shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Valentine's Day 2018 is also the deadliest to go before a jury in the country.

As prosecutors delivered their opening statement on Monday, many of those gathered in the packed courtroom were visibly emotional. Some families affected by the attack have spoken out publicly in support of a death sentence.

They listened intently, often wiping away tears as lead prosecutor Michael Satz detailed a moment-by-moment account of the shooting. He named each person who was shot and wounded, while one woman exited the courtroom in tears.

Mr Satz said he would show the court the murders had been "cold, calculated and premeditated". He recounted how the attacker, then 19, had vowed to become the "next school shooter" in a video filmed just days before.

"I'm going to speak to you about the unspeakable, about this defendant's goal-directed, planned, systematic murder," he said.

In a rare move, the defence team chose not to deliver an opening statement until they present evidence.

As footage from the incident was played in court for the first time, one aggrieved mother covered her ears while another doubled over in loud sobs.

Somebody in the room screamed "Shut if off!" as another piece of audio was played.

The defendant - who wore a dark jumper and a black face mask - had largely looked down at a notepad, occasionally scribbling in it and turning to his lawyers.

It has been more than four years since he stormed a building of Stoneman Douglas - from which he had been expelled - while carrying more than 300 rounds of ammunition.

Some 14 students and three teachers were killed. They were:

Alaina Petty, 14;
Alex Schachter, 14;
Alyssa Alhadeff, 14;
Gina Montalto, 14;
Cara Loughran, 14;
Jaime Guttenberg, 14;
Martin Duque, 14;
Luke Hoyer, 15;
Peter Wang, 15;
Carmen Schentrup, 16;
Helena Ramsay, 17;
Joaquin Oliver, 17;
Nicholas Dworet, 17;
Meadow Pollack, 18;
Scott Beigel, 35;
Aaron Feis, 37
Christopher Hixon, 49.

Prosecutors will seek to present evidence of the brutal circumstances of the attack, so-called aggravating factors that they hope will sway lenient jurors.

They will detail the stories of each victim as well as those who were injured, including through the use of hundreds of new photographs and videos.

Graphic shows details of the 2018 Parkland shooting

The defence, meanwhile, is expected to flesh out so-called mitigating factors that they hope will show a life sentence is adequate punishment for the gunman.

Those factors will include his upbringing, claims he was sexually abused as a child and reported mental health issues.

Legal skirmishes and the coronavirus pandemic have delayed the trial several times, and jury selection lasted for three months.

Update re: US MASS Shootings: Colorado Shooting Suspect Named & In Custody

Armed Hero Stopped Mass Shooter at Indiana Mall

The heavily armed suspect killed three people and injured two others at a shopping centre near Indianapolis.

BBC News 19 JUL 2022.

Many more people would have died during a mass shooting in the US state of Indiana on Sunday night if not for the "heroic" actions of a bystander who stopped the gunman, police have said.

The heavily armed suspect killed three people and injured two others at a shopping centre near Indianapolis.

Elisjsha Dicken, 22, who was at the mall with his girlfriend, drew his pistol and fatally shot the gunman.

The incident has reignited America's debate about gun ownership.

In the latest attack, a suspect opened fire with a rifle in a food court at the Greenwood Park Mall in the city of Greenwood.

The gunman had two rifles, a handgun and more than 100 rounds of bullets, said police.

He fired 24 rounds from one of the rifles before he was killed about two minutes into the assault.

Greenwood Police Chief Jim Ison said on Monday that Mr Dicken had engaged the gunman almost from the outset of the attack.

Elisjsha Dicken was lawfully carrying a concealed pistol

The police chief said that Mr Dicken had shown "proficient" and "sound" tactics in firing at "the gunman with a handgun from quite a distance", despite having had no law enforcement or military training.

Mr Dicken also gestured for other shoppers to flee behind him "as he engaged and closed in on the suspect", said the police chief. He fired 10 rounds.

Mr Dicken - who was lawfully carrying a concealed pistol - was at first handcuffed and questioned by police, before his version of events was confirmed by CCTV footage.

"Many more people would've died last night if not for a responsible armed citizen that took action very quickly within the first two minutes of the shooting," Mr Ison said.

"I will say his actions were nothing short of heroic," the police chief added.

The attacker was identified as a 20-year-old local resident who had recently been evicted and lost his job at a warehouse.

Two of the three people killed were a husband and wife, and the third was a 30-year-old man. A 22-year-old woman and a 12-year-old girl were injured.

Gun rights advocates held up the case as an example of why gun ownership by law-abiding citizens is important.

In a tweet on Monday morning, the National Rifle Association, a gun lobby, said: "We will say it again: The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."

But such outcomes are unusual. Only two out of 61 such attacks last year ended when armed bystanders engaged the active shooter, according to an FBI report in May.

A series of recent mass shootings - including at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, at a primary school in Uvalde, Texas, and at a parade in Highland Park, Illinois - have recharged America's debate over gun laws.

Three people were injured following gunfire outside the Six Flags SIX.N theme park in Gurnee, Illinois on Sunday, the Gurnee Police Department said.

16 Aug 2022 The Sun

Two victims were transported to the area medical center with non-life-threatening injuries after the shooting at the theme park, while the third victim declined transport to the hospital, the police department said in a statement.

"The shooting this evening was not a random act, and appeared to be a targeted incident that occurred outside the park," the statement said.

Parkland Florida Gunmans' Brain Irretrievably Broken, Jury Hears

Lawyers for a Florida school gunman have asked a jury to spare him the death penalty, arguing that his "brain was irretrievably broken" owing to a difficult childhood.

BBC News 23 AUG 2022.

Cruz's lawyer Melisa McNeil argued that events before he was even born contributed to the attack

Nikolas Cruz, 23, pleaded guilty last year to killing 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on 14 February 2018.

The trial will determine whether he is put to death or jailed for life.

The case is the deadliest mass shooting to reach a jury trial in the US.

On Monday Melisa McNeil, Cruz's lead lawyer, said her client had been exposed to drugs and alcohol while in his mother's womb, citing this as a contributing factor to the massacre.

"Because of that, his brain was irretrievably broken, through no fault of his own," she said, calling him a "damaged person", and describing his run-ins with school officials and police throughout his childhood in an adopted home.

"We must understand the person behind the crime," Ms McNeil told the jury of seven men, five women and 10 alternate jurors.

Danielle Woodard, Cruz's half-sister, described their mother as "horrible"

Cruz's half-sister, Danielle Woodard, also testified that her mother had abused drugs while the future school shooter was developing in "her polluted womb". She said her mother had told her that she was raped, reports the Miami Herald.

Ms Woodard, who is herself awaiting trial on a carjacking charge, described their mother as "horrible". As she prepared to give evidence on Monday, her half-brother nodded at her across the court.

When the trial began on 18 July, prosecutors argued that the defendant deserved to die for the "goal-directed, planned, systematic murder - mass murder - of 14 students, an athletic director, a teacher and a coach".

Jurors were shown gruesome video evidence from the crime scene, as well as video of the attacker calmly ordering a drink from a nearby shop minutes after the massacre, and later of him attacking a guard in jail.

They were also taken to the fenced-off school building where they toured the preserved crime scene. Balloons and cards for Valentine's Day were still scattered around the freshman building where Cruz fired around 150 shots from a semi-automatic rifle.

In her defence arguments, Ms McNeil argued that the seeds of the seven-minute massacre were sown years earlier, when her client's biological mother was working as a drug-addicted prostitute.

The first defence witness on Monday was a recovering addict who said she worked as a prostitute with Cruz's late birth mother, Brenda Woodard, in the 1990s when she became pregnant with the boy.

Carolyn Deakins said Woodard had abused cocaine, marijuana and alcohol throughout her pregnancy, and that "she didn't care" because she planned to put the baby up for adoption.

Cruz's adopted father died shortly after he came into the home, and his adopted mother, Lynda Cruz, had ignored troubles he was having at school, his lawyer said.

A photo of Cruz's drug-addicted birth mother was shown to the court

She removed him from psychiatric programmes that could have helped him curtail the violent episodes he was having as a young child in pre-school, Ms McNeil said.

Deeply in debt after her husband's death, Lynda Cruz had refused to have the troubled youth committed to a mental hospital because she did not want to stop receiving his Social Security benefits cheque each month, according to Ms McNeil.

The adoptive mother, who died several months before the attack, bought him a BB gun and airgun before getting him a rifle for his 18th birthday.

At the time of his guilty plea last October, Cruz said he was "very sorry" for the shooting.

All 12 jurors must vote unanimously in order for him to be put to death.

Uvalde Texas School Shooting: Embattled Police Chief is Fired

A police chief accused of botching the response to the fatal shooting in May of 19 school children and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas, has been sacked.

BBC News 25 AUG 2022

The local school board voted unanimously on Wednesday evening to fire Pete Arredondo.

His lawyers said in a written statement that he had been unaware anyone was inside the classrooms with the shooter.

Mr Arredondo has previously argued that he did not think he was the official in charge at the time of the attack.

He has taken the brunt of criticism for officers' 77-minute delay in confronting the teenage gunman - and is the first officer to be dismissed.

According to the New York Times, cheering was heard in the room as one of the board members filed the motion that there was "good cause" to remove Mr Arredondo from his post immediately.

Mr Arredondo's lawyers called his firing "an unconstitutional public lynching".

In a statement reported by the Austin American-Statesman newspaper, his attorneys maintained: "Chief Arredondo did the right thing.

"Any allegation of lack of leadership is wholly misplaced.

"The complaint that an officer should have rushed the door, believed to be locked, to open it up without a shield capable of stopping an AR-15 bullet, without breaching tools… is tantamount to suicide."

But an inquiry heard in June that the classroom door was not locked and there was no evidence officers tried to open it.

Texas public safety chief Steven McCraw testified to a state Senate hearing that there were enough police on the scene to have stopped the gunman three minutes after he entered the building.

Labelling the response an "abject failure", Mr McCraw also said Mr Arredondo had "decided to place the lives of officers before the lives of children".

Mr Arredondo - who had led the small police force since 2020 - stepped down in July from a city council seat he won shortly before the school shooting, amid angry calls for him to lose that post.

Memphis Shooting: Four People Dead in Facebook Livestream Rampage as Gunman in Custody

Police in a US city have placed a man in custody after warning the public to 'stay home' due to a gunman reportedly committing multiple shootings while streaming on Facebook

Daily Mirror UK 8 SEP 2022

The gunman, named by police as 19-year-old Ezekiel Kelly, claims to have shot five people - though this has not been proven

Four people have died and three people have been injured after an 'armed and dangerous' gunman reportedly carried out multiple shootings while streaming on Facebook Live.

Ezekiel Kelly, 19, was taken into custody late on Wednesday evening (September 7) in connection with a spree of shootings across the city of Memphis, Tennessee.

An earlier statement from Memphis Police Department on Twitter said they had received a number of calls regarding a young black male randomly firing at people while driving a blue or silver sedan.

Three shootings, including one fatal, have been reported in the city over the last 24 hours, with authorities now investigating a possible connection between the incidents.

The suspect is reported to be a 19-year-old man driving a blue Infiniti vehicle

The suspected assailant reportedly live-streamed the shootings on Facebook as he fired at random people

A man was shot dead at a petrol station in the area at around 4:30pm, while one woman was left critically wounded while joining the Interstate 240 highway.

The suspect was driving an Infiniti car with its rear window missing before swapping to a grey Toyota to avoid detection during the rampage.

The man reportedly claimed on a livestream to have shot five people, though this has not yet been verified. Facebook's parent company Meta confirmed it had removed content related to the incident, as well as the live video.

Police at the scene of a carjacking reportedly connected to the series of shootings

Police department spokesperson Major Karen Rudolph told NBC affiliate WMC: “We don’t know his motive, we just know that he is responsible for multiple shootings at this time.”

Shelby County Sherriff Floyd Bonner Jr. added: "Many families were shattered tonight."

One clip captured from a Facebook Live feed shows a man ****ing his gun and firing bullets out of the window as he rambles to his phone's front-facing camera while driving.

In another unverified clip the same man is seen exiting the car and walking into a supermarket, where he immediately fires at a person walking down a shopping aisle.

The city was warned to shelter in place as the incident continued

Before discharging the bullets he can be heard exclaiming "no faking, this s**t is for real".

The situation had led local authorities to order people to stay in their homes, with a warning shared by police to people in Memphis at 9pm read: “The suspect is still at large. If you do not have to be out, stay indoors until this is resolved.”

The 'shelter in place' order in Memphis was lifted after Kelly was taken into custody.

Memphis Police continue investigations into the incident

The University of Memphis was placed under special security measures in response to the situation, reports Fox 13 Memphis, with all entrances to campus locked.

Memphis Area Transport Authority also confirmed that they would be ceasing all trolley and bus services in the city until further notice while the situation remained active.

Mayor Jim Strickland added: “I want to first, express my deepest sympathy and condolences to the victims and their families who are suffering from this senseless murder rampage.

The suspect changed cars during the violence to avoid detection

“I’m angry for them, and I’m angry our citizens had to shelter in place for their own safety until the suspect was caught.

“This is no way for us to live and it is not acceptable.

“I want to thank the men and women of our Memphis Police Department, and all the supporting law enforcement agencies who supported in capturing the suspect tonight, and aided in the search for Liza Fletcher earlier this week.

"This has been a painful week in our city, but I have hope for Memphis, I have love for Memphis, I know that united we will endure.”

St Louis: Three Dead, Seven Injured After School Shooting

At least three people, including the suspect, have died and seven others are injured after a shooting at a high school in St Louis, Missouri.

BBC News 25 Oct 2022

The gunman entered Central Visual & Performing Arts High School shortly after 09:00 local time (13:00 GMT) on Monday.

The doors of the school building were locked and it was not immediately clear how the suspect entered.

Witnesses say lives were saved after the gunman's weapon jammed mid-attack.

St Louis Public Schools say police "quickly stopped" the gunman.

The suspect, identified by police as a 19-year-old former student, exchanged gunfire with police and later succumbed to his injuries.

His motive for the attack at the school of about 400 students is unclear.

A teenage girl was pronounced dead inside the school, while one woman died in hospital, police told local media.

The seven injured - three girls and four boys - all had non-life-threatening injuries, according to local media.

Students were running out of the school when officers arrived and said the attacker had a "long gun", according to the city's police commissioner Michael Sack.

He said seven security workers on site had acted quickly to notify other staff and contact police.

The gunman was found to be carrying hundreds of bullets that were sorted into nearly a dozen high-capacity magazines, Mr Sack later said, adding: "This could have been much worse."

"This is a heart-breaking day for all of us," he added. FBI agents are helping the investigation.

One student told the KMOV local news station the attacker had walked up to a friend and asked her: "You ready to die?"

Raven Terry said: "We just ran real, real fast... and we were just crying, all shaken up about it."

Taniya Gholston, 16, told the St Louis Post-Dispatch newspaper that the gunman had entered her classroom and tried to shoot her.

"I was trying to run and I couldn't run," she said. "Me and him made eye contact but I made it out because his gun got jammed."

She said she overheard the attacker saying: "I'm tired of this damn school."

Police said the gunman graduated last year from the school and had no history of criminal behaviour.

One of the victims was identified by family as health teacher Jean Kuczka.

Kuczka, 61, had taught at the school since 2008, according to an online biography, and was a grandmother of seven.

"My mom loved kids," her daughter Abigail Kuczka told the Post-Dispatch, adding that she had died protecting her students.

Those injured are said to be suffering from gunshot wounds, shrapnel injuries and cardiac arrest.

"Our children shouldn't have to experience this," St Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones said at a news conference after the shooting.

"They shouldn't have to go through active shooter drills in case something happens. And unfortunately, that happened today."

Data from the Education Week outlet show there have been at least 35 school shootings, in which at least one person was killed or injured, so far this year.

Earlier on Monday, a teenager in Michigan pleaded guilty to 24 charges, including terrorism and first-degree murder, after a rampage at his high school last November.

Convicted School Shooter Joins Calls For Gun Control in America

60 Minutes Australia 25 OCT 2022

In 2018, many cities in the United States were taken over by teenagers fed up with the way adults are running their country. The nationwide protests were to demand tougher gun controls.

What's significant - and impressive - is that those rallies were organised and led by the very students who endured the horror of seeing their own classmates gunned down at the Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida.

Their simple message is getting louder by the day: enough is enough. And as Tom Steinfort reports, the students also have a very unlikely ally.

Evan Ramsey is a convicted school shooter who is now spending the rest of his life in prison, regretting his moment of madnes

Colorado Springs Shooting:Killed Five and Injured 18 at LGBT Club

Colorado Springs nightclub shooting: emergency response vehicles attend scene

Sun, 20 November 2022

A gunman killed five people and injured 18 others during a mass shooting inside a LGBT+ nightclub in Colorado Springs on 19 November.

Police officers responded to the scene at 11.57pm after 911 dispatchers received “numerous” calls that there was an active shooter inside the club, according to Colorado Springs Police Department spokesperson Lt Pam Castro.

Club Q said it was “devastated” by the attack and called the incident a hate crime.

A post on the club’s Facebook page said that people inside the building helped stop the gunman.

“Our [prayers] and thoughts are with all the victims and their families and friends,” according to a post on the club’s Facebook page. “We thank the quick reactions of heroic customers that subdued the gunman and ended this hate attack.”

A suspect was taken to a hospital with unspecified injuries. The suspect’s name, age and gender has not yet been announced.

Drag performer Del Lusional hosted a punk and alternative show scheduled for 9pm, followed by a DJ and dancing from 11pm until the early morning hours.

“I was walking backstage when I heard the gunshots. I only saw the after math and even then, I didn’t wanna look,” Del Lusional wrote in a post on Twitter.

In another post, the performer said: “I never thought this would happen to me and my bar. I don’t know what to do with myself. I can’t stop hearing the shots.”

One victim ran from the scene to a nearby 7-Eleven and collapsed, according to a witness who spoke with Colorado Public Radio.

“One of the victims had gotten shot seven times and ran over here … trying to get some help,” he said. “He collapsed. That’s why that caution tape is out in the front there.”

More than 30 firefighters and 11 ambulances responded to the scene, and ambulances transported three patients at a time to local hospitals.

During an early morning press conference, Lt Castro stressed that “the investigation is in the very initial stages” and declined to discuss a motive.

Colorado Shooting Suspect Named

At least five people were killed and another 18 were injured in a shooting late on Saturday at an LGBTQ+ nightclub in Colorado Springs.

BBC NEWS 21 Nov 2022

The suspected shooter, 22-year-old Anderson Lee Aldrich, is in custody, the chief of the Colorado Spring police department, Adrian Vasquez, said at a news conference Sunday morning.

Aldrich immediately began shooting when he entered the club on Saturday, and at least two patrons quickly confronted him and subdued him, Vazquez said. 'We owe them a great debt of thanks,' he added

Who is Anderson Lee Aldrich? Biography, Age, Family

The suspect believed to have killed five and wounded 18 in a mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Colorado is in custody, according to police. The attacker’s motive is still unclear, but the club’s owners believe it was a hate crime. The gunman, identified by police as 22-year-old Anderson Lee Aldrich, opened fire at Club Q in Colorado Springs, Colorado, shortly before midnight Saturday, police said.

Club patrons quickly subdued him and detained him when police arrived a few minutes after receiving a call, authorities said. adding: “We owe them a great debt of gratitude.” Two firearms were found at the scene, including a “long rifle,” according to Vásquez. “My heart breaks for the family and friends of those lost, injured and traumatized in this horrific shooting,” said Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, who became the first openly gay man in the United States to be elected. governor in 2018. He called the shooting “disgusting.”

The attack ended in minutes. Police received numerous 911 calls beginning at 11:56 p.m. m. and an officer arrived at midnight. The suspect was taken into custody at 12:02 a.m., police said. Several of the 18 injured people are in critical condition with gunshot wounds, authorities said.

The suspect was being treated at a hospital, police said, adding that officers did not shoot him. In a statement, Club Q called the shooting a hate attack. “Club Q is devastated by the senseless attack on our community,” the club posted on its Facebook page. He said his prayers were with the victims and families, adding: ”

We appreciate the quick reactions of the heroic customers who subdued the gunman and put an end to this hateful attack.” The attack was the sixth mass murder in the US this month and comes seven months after the deaths of 21 in a shooting at a school in Uvalde, Texas.

There have been 523 mass murders in the US since 2006 resulting in 2,727 deaths as of November 19, according to the Associated Press/USA Today database on US mass murders. President Joe Biden and other political leaders have offered statements of support and condolences. on social networks

“While the motive for this attack is still unclear, we know that the LGBTQI+ community has been subjected to terrible hate violence in recent years,” Biden wrote in a statement. “Gun violence continues to have a particularly devastating impact on LGBTQI+ communities across our nation, and threats of violence are increasing.”

Sarah Kate Ellis, president of GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, suggested that an alarming rise in hate speech and anti-gay legislation inspires such violence.

“You can draw a beeline from the false and vile rhetoric about LGBTQ people spread by extremists and amplified on social media, to the nearly 300 anti-LGBTQ bills introduced this year, to the dozens of attacks on our community like this one. ”. Ellis wrote.

“This unspeakable attack has deprived countless people of their friends and family and the sense of safety of an entire community,” Ellis added. Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore said the department is adding patrol cars and increasing “visibility” noting that today is Trans Day of Remembrance. “America is mourning another mass shooting,” he said

Police told reporters that the attack happened at 22:12 local time (03:12 GMT).

Pictures on social media showed a heavy police presence at the scene.

Spokesperson Leo Kosinski said the shooting was believed to have happened inside the store, and that the suspect acted alone.

Walmart said it was "shocked at this tragic event" and that it was "working closely with law enforcement".

Following the incident, footage appeared online which appeared to show an eyewitness - wearing Walmart uniform - describing what happened.

He said he had left a staff room, which a manager then entered and opened fire.

"Sadly we lost a few of our associates," the man said, clarifying that he did not know how many of his colleagues were shot.

A woman named Joetta Jeffery told CNN that her mother had been inside the building when the attack took place, and had managed to send text messages.

Ms Jeffrey said her mother was not hurt but was in shock.

Mark Warner, a Democratic senator for the state of Virginia, tweeted that he was "sickened by reports of yet another mass shooting".

Virginia state Senator L. Louise Lucas, also a Democrat, added that she was "absolutely heartbroken".

She wrote on Twitter: "I will not rest until we find the solutions to end this gun violence epidemic in our country."

Tuesday evening's attack comes just days after a gunman opened fire at a LGBT nightclub in the US state of Colorado, killing five people and injuring 17 others.

In 2019, a mass shooting at a Walmart in the city of El Paso in Texas left 23 dead.

Newport News: Condition of Teacher Shot by Child Improving

The condition of a Virginia teacher left seriously injured when she was shot by a six-year-old pupil has shown signs of improvement, authorities say.

BBC News .9 JAN 2023

Abby Zwerner was shot after an "altercation" with a six-year-old student

Abby Zwerner suffered life-threatening injuries after she was shot with a handgun at Richneck Elementary School in the city of Newport News on Friday.

Mayor Phillip Jones told the BBC that Ms Zwerner's recovery was "trending in a positive direction".

But he added that she remained in a critical condition after the incident.

Online, social media users wished Ms Zwerner - who is believed to be in her 30s - a speedy recovery.

Her alma mater, James Madison University in Virginia, offered "prayers and best wishes for Abby's health and recovery".

It is unclear how the child - who remains in police custody - obtained the gun. Officials said that while the school - which has around 550 students - had metal detection facilities, students were checked at random and not every child was inspected.

Police have declined to say what might have motivated the incident, but Chief Steve Drew told reporters the shooting had come after an "altercation" in a first grade (ages six to seven) classroom and did not appear to be "accidental".

One parent, Steve Gonzalez, whose child was present in the classroom at the time of the shooting, told Fox News that Ms Zwerner had reacted selflessly after the shooting.

He said that after being struck by the bullet "she screamed at her kids to run away".

Mayor Jones - who took office just five days ago - said police were continuing to investigate the circumstances around the shooting, but said he thought the "word altercation was a valid one, and one that I would use".

"We don't have all the answers about how a six-year-old was able to handle a firearm or how a six-year-old was able to access a firearm," he said.

"This is a dark day in our history and I think this is a red flag for the country."

Officers have also declined to discuss what contact they have had with the student's parents.

Virginia law prevents six-year-olds being tried as adults. And the child would also be too young to be committed to the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice if found guilty.

But a judge could revoke the parents' custody of the boy and take him into the supervision of the state.

On Saturday, Chief Drew said police had "been in contact with our commonwealth's attorney [local prosecutor] and some other entities to help us best get services to this young man".

School District Superintendent George Parker said on Saturday that the shooting showed "we need to educate our children and we need to keep them safe".

"We need the community's support, continued support, to make sure that guns are not available to youth and I'm sounding like a broken record today, because I continue to reiterate that: that we need to keep the guns out of the hands of our young people," he added.

Newport News is a city of around 180,000 people and sits about 70 miles (112km) to the south of the state capital Richmond.

Monterey Park LA Shooting: Suspect at Large After Shooting Near LA Kills 10

Ten people have died following a shooting at a ballroom dance studio in the Californian city of Monterey Park, police said.

BBC 22 JAN 2023

Police say another 10 people are injured and the suspect remains at large.

The shooting happened at about 22:20 local time on Saturday (06:20 GMT on Sunday).

Thousands of people had earlier gathered in the city for the Monterey Park Lunar New Year festival.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said they are seeking a male suspect who fled the scene but did not provide any other details about him.

Captain Andrew Meyer said that emergency services arrived on the scene and found patrons "pouring out of the location screaming".

Officers then confirmed 10 people had died.

At least 10 others have been injured and are in local hospitals, where their conditions vary from stable to critical.

Investigators said there was no clear motive and it was too early to say whether the incident was being treated as a hate crime.

They confirmed that Sunday's Lunar New Year festival events had been cancelled.

Captain Meyer added that police were aware of an incident in Alhambra, a suburb north of Monterey Park, but did not elaborate further.

"We have investigators on scene trying to determine if there's a connection between these two incidents," he said.

No one was injured at the second location in Alhambra but police remain at the scene, CBS News reported.

Videos on social media showed a large police presence in the city, which is located about eight miles (13km) east of Los Angeles.

An eyewitness told the Los Angeles Times that three people ran into his restaurant and told him to lock the door as there was a man with a machine gun in the area.

"It appears to have happened at a dance studio nearby where a gunman came in with what an eyewitness described as a machine gun, some automatic gun that fired multiple rounds at mostly Asian-Americans," Jeong Park, a reporter with the paper, told the BBC.

Monterey Park Shooting Suspect Found Dead After Dance Studio Attack

Monterey Park Shooting Suspect,72, Found Dead of Self-Inflicted Gunshot

Motive for attack remains unclear as police identify gunman who killed at least 10 people at LA-area dance studio

BBC 23 JAN 2023

Photos of suspect from LA County Sheriff's Department, 22 Jan 23

California police have identified the gunman suspected of killing 10 people in a ballroom dance studio near Los Angeles as Huu Can Tran, 72, who was later found dead in a white van.

He had a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was declared dead at the scene, LA County Sheriff Robert Luna said.

Celebrations for Lunar New Year had been under way in Monterey Park, known for its large Asian population.

Police do not yet know the motive.

Ten people were wounded in the shooting, and seven are still in hospital, some in a critical condition, the sheriff said at a news conference on Sunday afternoon in Monterey Park.

He added that the 10 people who died were still being identified, but they "seem to be probably in their 50s, 60s and some maybe even beyond there".

Earlier, officials said five women and five men had been killed, all "probably" of Asian descent.

The mass shooting, one of the deadliest in California's history, began at around 22:22 local time on Saturday (06:22 GMT on Sunday) at the popular Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park, about seven miles (11km) east of central Los Angeles.

Police Chief Scott Wiese said that what his officers found was a "scene of carnage", and that the first officers to get there were some of the youngest on his squad, having only just finished their training a few months ago.

"They came across a scene none of them have prepared for," he said. "There were injured people inside and dead people inside. My young officers did their job."

About 30 minutes later, the gunman arrived at another dance studio in the nearby town of Alhambra.

He entered the studio, but two people managed to wrestle the weapon off him - a semi-automatic assault pistol with an extended magazine - and he escaped.

Sheriff Luna said he believed the weapon was illegal in California, although added he needed to investigate that further.

He praised the "two community members, who I consider to be heroes. They saved lives, this could've been much worse," the sheriff said, adding that he believes Tran intended to kill more people.

For hours on Sunday, authorities scoured the Los Angeles area in search of the gunman.

Just before 13:00 local time (21:00 GMT) - about 12 hours after the shooting - a SWAT team swarmed a white van in a carpark in Torrance, about 30 miles (48km) from the Monterey Park shooting scene.

Sheriff Luna said they heard a single shot from inside the van as they approached, and then found the suspect slumped over the steering wheel. Evidence including a handgun was recovered, and the man was identified as the gunman.

The sheriff said the gunman is believed to have acted alone, and there were no other suspects.

He said police "assume" the number plates on the van were stolen.

Monterey Park's population is about 65% Asian American - it has been called America's first "Chinese suburb". It became the first mainland US city to have a majority of residents with Asian ancestry.

With a community in mourning, the Monterey Park celebrations of Lunar New Year were cancelled. Businesses began removing the red lanterns and festive banners that had adorned the streets.

Half Moon Bay: Seven Dead in SECOND California Shooting in Days

A gunman killed seven people before being arrested in California on Monday, just two days after a shooting claimed 11 lives at a popular dance hall.

BBC 24 JAN 2023

The attacker was identified as 67-year-old Zhao Chunli, a local resident.
Zhao Chunli, seen in an undated driver's licence photo

The latest attacks occurred at two separate locations in the coastal city of Half Moon Bay, about 30 miles (50 km) south of San Francisco.

It comes as the state mourns the deaths in majority-Asian Monterey Park during celebrations for the Lunar New Year.

The suspect on Monday was filmed by news cameras turning himself in to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office about two hours after the attack.

The first four victims were discovered at a mushroom farm around 14:22 local time (00:22GMT), while the other three were later found at a nearby trucking business.

Investigators have not yet provided a motive for this attack.

San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus said at a news conference that the suspect was arrested after driving himself to a local police station around 16:40.

He was found with a semi-automatic pistol that may have been used in the attack, and is currently "co-operating" with police, she added.

Mrs Corpus added that an eighth victim is being treated in hospital and is in critical condition.

"This kind of shooting is horrific," she said. "It's a tragedy we hear about far too often, but today it's hit home here in San Mateo County."

In a news conference, the sheriff also confirmed that witnesses include children who had recently been let out of school and lived on the rural property.

"For children to witness this is unspeakable," she said.

California Governor Gavin Newsom tweeted that he was "at the hospital meeting with victims of a mass shooting when I get pulled away to be briefed about another shooting.

"This time in Half Moon Bay. Tragedy upon tragedy."

Half Moon Bay Council member Debbie Ruddock told NBC that the victims were Chinese farmworkers.

San Mateo County Board of Supervisors President Dave Pine told the Associated Press news agency that the attacks were committed by a "disgruntled worker".

"We are sickened by today's tragedy in Half Moon Bay," Mr Pine said in a statement.

"The scourge of gun violence has sadly hit home. We have not even had time to grieve for those lost in the terrible shooting in Monterey Park. Gun violence must stop."

Michigan State: Three Students Killed in Shooting at University

Three students were killed and five others injured after a gunman opened fire on the Michigan State University (MSU) campus on Monday night.

BBC 15 FEB 2023

A picture was released of the suspect before his death was announced

The victims were all students at the university, police said, and the injured remain in critical condition.

The police said a caller's tip led them to the suspected gunman, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The suspect, who has since been identified, had no ties to MSU.

"We can confirm that the 43-year-old suspect had no affiliation to the university. He was not a student, faculty, or staff, current or previous," Chris Rozman of the Michigan State University Police said.

Questions still remain about the motive of the gunman, who was identified as 43-year-old Anthony McRae.

"We have absolutely no idea what the motive was at this point," Mr Rozman said.

The names of the victims have not yet been released.

Dr Denny Martin, the Chief Medical Officer of Sparrow Hospital, where the victims were taken for treatment, said four of the injured required surgery and one was taken to critical care. All five remain in hospital.

"This is something that we practice for very often, but never want to do," said a visibly emotional Dr Martin at Tuesday's news conference.

The gunman opened fire shortly before 20:30 local time (01:30 GMT) at Berkey Hall, a building located north of the MSU campus in the city of East Lansing.

Responding officers found multiple students who were injured - two of whom died on the scene.

Police said the suspect then walked over to the nearby MSU Union building, where they received several more reports of gunshots. The third victim died inside the building, they said.

The suspect then quickly fled the scene, sparking a large manhunt involving hundreds of officers.

He was found nearly four hours later at 11:45 local time in the City of Lansing, around three miles (4.82 km) northwest of campus, after police released a photo of him and a citizen called in a tip that helped locate him.

The photo, taken from surveillance footage, showed the suspect wearing a denim jacket, a navy baseball cap and red trainers.

As the manhunt was ongoing, students were told to "shelter in place". Some reported on social media that they were hiding.

One - Drew Russ, an 18-year-old from Los Angeles - was watching Star Wars with friends at his dorm when a deluge of text messages arrived.

He and everyone on his floor in the dorm, which is about a mile from Berkey Hall, stayed put, he told MSNBC on Monday night.

"I couldn't believe this was happening on my college campus," he said.

Another student jumped out of a first-floor window at Berkey Hall, her parents said.

Mike and Natalie Papoulias rushed to the campus on Monday night from Jackson, Michigan, after receiving a call from their daughter, they told local media.

In a text message, the daughter said: "I heard somebody get shot, Mom. It's terrifying. I could smell the gunpowder."

City officials said the shooting has rocked the small communities of MSU and East Lansing.

"We went to school here, we got children here, we got family, this is us," said Marlon Lynch, chief of campus police at the university.

All campus activities have been cancelled for at least 48 hours, said MSU president Teresa Woodruff, "to give ourselves time to think and to grieve and to be together".

East Lansing lies about 70 miles (112km) north-west of Detroit.

At Tuesday's news conference, Democrat House representative Elissa Slotkin of Michigan said she was "filled with rage" to be talking about yet another school shooting.

"The most haunting picture of last night was watching the cameras pan through the crowd and seeing a young person wearing an 'Oxford Strong' sweatshirt," she said. The shirts were handed out to survivors of the Oxford High School shooting near Detroit, Michigan 15 months ago.

"We have children in Michigan who are living their second school shooting in under a year and a half," she said. "If this is not a wake-up call to do something, I don't know what is."

In a statement, President Joe Biden said the victims in Michigan and those grieving other mass shootings are owed action on gun reform.

"The fact that this shooting took place the night before this country marks five years since the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, should cause every American to exclaim 'enough' and demand that Congress take action," he said.

The shooting is the latest in a growing number in schools and college campuses across the US.

In November, three members of the University of Virginia football team were killed on campus, while 10 people were killed in a shooting at Umpqua Community College in Oregon in 2015.

In 2007, 33 lives were lost in a shooting at Virginia Tech.

Meanwhile, police in New Jersey said a town's public and private schools were closed on Tuesday due to a threat connected to the Michigan State suspect.

A statement from the Ewing police department said its officers were informed the suspected gunman had ties to Ewing Township, and that a note containing a threat to two public schools there had been discovered.

Mississippi Mass Shooting: Six Killed and Suspect Detained

At least six people have died in a series of shootings in a small rural town in the US state of Mississippi

BBC 18 FEB 2023

All the victims were gunned down at several locations in Arkabutla, about 45 miles (72km) south of Memphis, in neighbouring Tennessee.

Three victims were found dead inside two houses, while others were found inside a store, in a car and on a road.

Police confirmed they have a lone suspect in custody.

The Tate County sheriff's office identified him as a 52-year-old local resident.

He has been charged with first-degree murder, with additional charges to be filed in the coming days, and is being held without bail at the county jail.

The suspect is believed to have acted alone, although his motive is not yet known, Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves tweeted on Friday.

The state bureau of investigation is helping police with the investigation.

The rampage began when the gunman entered a store and shot a man at around 11:00 local time (17:00 GMT), Sheriff Brad Lance told Action News 5.

He then went to a nearby home where he shot a woman dead and injured her husband, the sheriff said.

Mr Lance said that the gunman then went to a home believed to be his own residence and killed two more people there.

Deputies spotted the suspect inside a car matching witnesses' descriptions and were able to apprehend him in the driveway of another home after a brief car chase.

Police found two more victims there, one inside a car and one on the road, not far from the other victims in the town of fewer than 300 people.

The suspect was "dressed in camouflage with a long gun", an eyewitness told local media.

A primary and secondary school in nearby Coldwater were placed in lockdown during the incident.

Another witness - Ethan Cash, a 19-year-old local resident - told WREG-TV that he had seen the gun-toting suspect.

Mr Cash said he checked the pulse of the victim who died inside his vehicle.

"This... doesn't happen out here," he said. "This is supposed to be a peaceful place."

Friday's incident marks the 73rd mass shooting since the year began, according to the Gun Violence Archive (GVA) non-profit research database.

GVA defines a mass shooting as an incident in which four or more people are injured or killed.

Nashville School Shooting: Six Killed by Female Shooter in Tennessee

Six People, Three of Them Children, Have Been Killed in a Primary School Shooting in Nashville

'Aren't you guys tired of this?': Woman who survived Highland Park shooting makes plea in Nashville

BBC 27 MAR 2023

Six people including three children have been killed in a school shooting in Nashville, Tennessee, according to local authorities.

The attack took place on Monday at a private Christian school which teaches children up to around 12 years old.

Nashville police said they engaged and killed the shooter, a 28-year-old woman who may have been a former student.

Mass shootings committed by women are far more rare than those committed by men, according to crime statistics.

The dead include three children, three staff members and the shooter, officials said in a news conference.

The suspect was carrying two "assault-type" rifles and at least one pistol, which has been recovered at the scene. Her identity remains unclear.

The Covenant School in Nashville, where the incident took place, has about 200 students, the youngest of them pre-school age. Local media reported that it implemented an "active shooter" programme in 2022.

Nashville Police Chief John Drake said initial findings indicate the attacker may have been a former student at the school. He said the findings are based on "clues" found inside a nearby parked car.

Investigators do not yet know how she entered the campus.

One police officer was wounded by cut glass while responding to the incident, police said. Two officers who entered the building went towards the sound of gunfire and encountered the shooter on the school's second floor, where they fatally shot her.

The entire attack lasted around 14 minutes.

According to data compiled by Education Week, there were 12 school shootings in 2023 up until 23 March that have resulted in deaths or injuries in the US.

FBI data shows that of 61 mass shootings that took place in 2021 - the last year for which data is available - only one involved a female suspect. Of 345 incidents from 2000 to 2019, only 13 involved female shooters.

How Nashville Police Stopped School Shooting in Four Minutes

Moment Police Shoot Female Who Killed 5 in Nashville Primary School

America's latest mass shooting was put to a stop by police officers minutes after they arrived at Nashville's Covenant School.

131 Mass SHOOTINGS This Year

BBC 29 MAR 2023

Still from body cam footage
An unidentified woman can be heard telling officers that two children are missing,

The shooting began at 10:10 AM (16:10 BST) on Monday when 28-year-old Audrey Hale arrived at the school and approached a side entrance.

CCTV footage from inside the school depicts what happens next: glass doors shatter in a flurry of gunshots, allowing the heavily armed attacker to enter.

Over the next 11 minutes or so, three children and three staff members would be fatally shot. The attack would end with police officers shooting Hale dead, four minutes after arriving at the school.

Here's what we know about how the tragedy unfolded.

The Attack Begins

According to Hale's parents, the attacker left home on Monday morning carrying a red bag, which authorities now believe contained the weapons used in the shooting. Hale dismissed her mother when she asked about the contents of the bag.

It is unclear what time this took place or how much time passed until Hale arrived at Covenant School. CCTV footage shows her arriving to the school's parking lot in her car at about 09:54 AM.

CCTV footage shows the shooter arriving at the school in her car before the shooting.

Custodian Michael Hill, 61, was shot through the glass during the opening salvo of gunfire at 10:10 AM. Police received the first 911 call about the shooting three minutes later at 10:13 AM.

At a news conference on Tuesday, Nashville Police Chief John Drake said the head of the school, Katherine Koonce, was found in a hallway where a "confrontation" had taken place with the suspect.

It is not clear where the other victims were found, although police believe none of the victims were targeted individually.

Shots fFred at Police

When the officers arrived, the suspect fired at them from an upstairs window, damaging at least one police car.

Nashville Police Chief John Drake said investigators believed that the suspect had some training to be able to fire from an elevated position, positioned slightly back from the window in order to not be "an easy target".

The rest of what we know about the shootings comes from six minutes of bodycam footage from officers Rex Engelbert and Michael Collazo.

The footage shows Mr Engelbert at the school and quickly arming himself with a rifle from the boot of his vehicle. It is unclear what exact time this took place, as the bodycam has no time stamp.

---Beloved school head among Nashville shooting victims

As he exits his vehicle, an unidentified woman tells him that "the kids are all locked down" but that two children are unaccounted for. Soon after, the woman, who appears to be in communication with staff members inside, notes that "a bunch of kids" are upstairs.

Just over a minute after arriving, Mr Engelbert and the other officers enter the school and begin a methodical sweep of the first floor before moving up towards the second, where gunfire can be clearly heard.

Officers Kill The Shooter

In a clip taken from Mr Collazo's bodycam, an officer can be heard saying "we've got one down", to which Mr Collazo replies: "Keep pushing." The officers then begin jogging down a hall, past a victim on the floor.

The video shows that Mr Engelbert first encountered the shooter after rounding a corner into an atrium from where Hale appeared to be shooting.

He fires four shots at Hale, who falls to the ground. Other officers fire four more shots and shout at the shooter to stop moving. The suspect's weapons are then removed as the shooter lies motionless in front of the atrium window.

The shooting of the suspect took place less than four minutes after officers first pulled up to the school in their vehicles.

The actions of the officers at the scene - particularly Mr Engelbert and Mr Collazo - have been credited with saving the lives of other potential victims.

In an interview with the BBC's US media partner CBS News, Mr Drake said that "we could have [had] far more casualties than we had".

"They immediately responded when inside, addressed and mitigated the suspect," he added.

The response in Nashville appears to stand in stark contrast to police actions in the May 2022 shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas.

In that incident, police hesitated for 74 minutes, giving the suspect more time to kill. A total of 21 people, including 19 children, died.

"I would say that under extreme circumstances, they [Mr Engelbert and Mr Collazo] went above and beyond," police trainer Todd McGhee told the local Tennessean newspaper. "Those first responding officers were the model response in how active shooter response should be."
