British Airways Pilot Kidnapped & Tortured After Stopover in South Africa
British Airways Pilot Kidnapped and Tortured After Shopping Trip on Flight Stopover
The British Airways pilot was subjected to hours of torture after being kidnapped on a shopping trip during a stopover between flights in the crime hotspot Johannesburg Daily Mail 12 JAN 2024 A British Airways pilot has been kidnapped and tortured after a cruel trick during a stopover between flights, it has been reported. The man said to be a First Officer with the airline, was approached by a woman in a supermarket car park, who asked her for help carrying her shopping. When they got to her car, a group of men then bundled him inside and drove him to a remote area of the South African city, where he was subjected to hours of beatings and pressured into giving the attackers access to his money. The incident is said to have taken place in an area just north of BA's secure compound in the crime hotspot city, the Melrose Arch complex. The victim was eventually forced to hand over “thousands and thousands of pounds”, the Sun reported. A replacement pilot was brought in to fly the plane back to London, and the incident left the crew member from the airline "shaken" - though the man himself is said to be happy to have escaped with his life. One source told the newspaper: “It’s staggering what happened to the pilot. It was like something out of the movies. He fell for the scam of agreeing to help a woman in need, and before he knew it was bundled in a vehicle and driven away." BA have rules in place against their employees leaving their security-assured accommodation sites while staying in the South African city, which has one of the highest crime rates in the world. It has its own hotel set aside for employees in the Melrose Arch area of Johannesburg, which is known as a 'city within a city' because of its safety compared to the surrounding area. The facility is patrolled 24 hours a day and has a number of leisure facilities for the comfort of guests, including shops, restaurants and a bowling alley. A British Airways spokesperson told the Sun: “A crew member was abducted outside Checkers Bluebird supermarket just north of the Melrose Arch complex.” A BA spokesperson told the Mirror: "We are supporting our colleague and the local authorities with their investigation." |
