A former childrens' nurse has been charged with eight counts of murder and 10 counts of attempted murder, following an investigation into the deaths of babies at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Lucy Letby, 30, is also charged with attempting to murder another four girls and five boys.

All the victims were patients at a premature baby unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Letby sat behind a table with her solicitor from Chester police station as the charges were read out this morning.

She spoke only to confirm her name, date of birth and address.

The families whose babies were involved listened to proceedings on a video conference call because of social distancing measures.

30 year old Lucy Letby has been re-arrested as part of an investigation which began three years ago.

Letby, of Arran Avenue, Hereford, is accused of murdering five baby boys Cemlyn Bennett, Joseph Johnson, Barney Gee, Joseph Gelder and Eli Gelder.

The baby girls were named as Elsie McNall, Daisy Parkin and Maddie Freed.

An alternative charge of attempted murder has been included for Maddie Freed as she died on February 20th 2016 – described in court as “some time” after leaving hospital.

Her attempted murder allegedly took place three days earlier on February 17th.

The former nurse appeared composed as she sat up straight throughout the 12-minute hearing at Warrington magistrates' cout.

Letby, from Hereford was remanded in custody to appear at Chester crown court on Friday afternoon.

A nurse accused of killing seven babies and trying to murder another 10 allegedly poisoned two babies with insulin days after they were born, a jury has heard today.

Lucy Letby, 32, pleaded not guilty to all 22 charges at Manchester Crown Court this morning.

Letby, of Hereford, denies murdering five boys and two girls, and attempting to murder another five boys and five girls between June 2015 and June 2016.

In some instances, she is accused of attempting to murder the same infant multiple times.

Opening for the prosecution, Nick Johnson KC told jurors that "within the neonatal unit in the Countess of Chester a poisoner was at work".

He told the court that many of the incidents happened during the night shift, and at the time Letby worked the night shift there was a rise in deaths and collapses.

He also said that when Letby was moved to the day shift, there was a rise in unusual collapses and deaths on the day shift.

Mr Johnson said police were called in and conducted a “pain-staking review” after medics could not account for the collapses and deaths.

He said: “That review suggests that in the period between mid-2015 and the middle of 2016 somebody in the neo-natal unit poisoned two children with insulin.

“The prosecution says that the only reasonable conclusion to be drawn from the evidence you will hear is that somebody poisoned these babies deliberately with insulin. This was no accident.”

The collapses and deaths of all the 17 children concerned were not “naturally-occurring tragedies,” the jury of five men and nine women were told today.

“They were all the work, we say, of the woman in the dock, who we say was the constant malevolent presence when things took a turn for the worse for these 17 children.

An alleged killer nurse was interrupted by the mother of one of her victims who paid her baby boy a visit at the neonatal unit, a court has heard.

Lucy Letby is accused of murdering five baby boys and two girls, and attempting to murder 10 other babies at Countess of Chester Hospital in 2015 and 2016.

Manchester Crown Court heard Child E's mother did not realise he was being attacked and was told by the nurse the blood from his mouth was due to a tube.

Ms Letby, 32, denies 22 charges.

The nurse, of Hereford, is accused of murdering Child E and attempting to murder his twin, Child F, the following day.

The court heard how the twins had been born prematurely and Ms Letby was the designated nurse for both boys.

One night, their mother, who was an inpatient on the postnatal ward, decided to visit her sons in the neonatal unit.

The jury was told the mother interrupted Ms Letby, who was in the process of attacking Child E, but she did not realise this. Child E's mother found her son acutely distressed and bleeding from his mouth.

Ms Letby attempted to reassure the mother saying: "Trust me I'm a nurse."

The court heard the nurse urged the mother of Child E to go back to her ward, which she did, but was so concerned she phoned her husband.

Ms Letby later made a record on the nursing notes which was not true and "designed to cover her tracks", prosecutor Nick Johnson KC said.

"They fail to mention that Child E was bleeding at 21:00 BST and they mention a meeting between his mum and a doctor that neither of them remember."

The court heard Child E was bleeding so heavily that one of the doctors said he had never encountered such a large bleed in a small baby.

The jury heard after Child E's death his parents did not wish to have a post-mortem examination, the doctor on-call did not deem one necessary and the coroner's office agreed.

"As subsequent reviews have established that was a big mistake," Mr Johnson said.

He alleged Child E was murdered by an injection of air.
'Not an accident'

The prosecution also told the court Ms Letby added insulin to Child F's feed.

This caused Child F's blood sugar to start to drop calamitously while Ms Letby was present and continued after she had gone.

Mr Johnson said: "Somebody poisoned him. No other baby on the neonatal unit was being prescribed insulin. Therefore it couldn't have been negligence.

"You know who was in the room, and you know from the records who hung the [feed] bag."

The court heard Child F's nutrients bag was replaced and he survived, but the medical team on the unit were concerned and ordered checks.

It was also claimed Ms Letby took a "very unusual interest" in the parents of the twins, searching for them repeatedly on Facebook, including on Christmas Day in 2015.

The court heard the nurse allegedly attempted to murder one baby, Child G, who had been born at 23 weeks, three times.

The baby was born at a different hospital weighing 1lb 2oz (510g) and had later been transferred to the Chester hospital.

She had been there three weeks and was "perfectly well" but then vomited and showed signs of infection, the jury heard.

She was subsequently transferred away from the Countess of Chester Hospital back to the hospital where she was born, and made a "remarkable recovery".

Nurse poisoned babies with insulin, trial told

The jury was told once Child G recovered, she was then transferred back to Chester, where Ms Letby allegedly gave her milk via a tube and in little over an hour she had projectile vomited twice and was not breathing.

There had been "no significant issues" with Child G "until Lucy Letby got involved", the court heard.

"Putting it simply the milk in her vomit did not come from nowhere. That doesn't happen by accident," Mr Johnson said.

An MRI scan taken between the events revealed neurological changes and an MRI scan some months later in August 2016 confirmed Child G had sustained irreversible brain damage.

The court also heard about Child C and D's alleged murders.

Ms Letby allegedly injected air into the stomach of the tiny, premature Child C through a nose tube, causing his breathing and heart to stop.

The trial heard Ms Letby agreed she had been the only person in the room when Child C collapsed and was supposed to be looking after another, more poorly baby, in another room.

The incident came six days after she allegedly killed Child A by injecting air into his bloodstream, and she later similarly attacked his twin sister, Child B, causing her to collapse.

"You can now see there was a pattern emerging," Mr Johnson said.

"Lucy Letby was the only person working on the night shift when Child C died who had also been working on either of the shifts when Child A died and his twin sister Child B collapsed."
'Constant presence'

Mr Johnson told the court Ms Letby's method of attacking the babies was "beginning to develop".

"She had injected air into the bloodstream of the first twins, Child A and B, and varied this approach by injecting air into Child C's stomach via the nasogastric tube," he said.

Mr Johnson also alleged Ms Letby murdered Child D with an intentional injection of air.

The baby girl had an infection but was responding well to treatment until she deteriorated and collapsed three times and could not be revived.

At the time, three children had died and one had had a life-threatening episode in the neonatal unit and "only Lucy Letby was the constant presence", the court was told.

The jury has been told the trial may last up to six months.

The 33-year-old is alleged to have attacked the newborn infant, referred to as Child O, on the Countess of Chester Hospital's neonatal unit in June 2016.

The nurse is charged with murdering seven babies and attempting to murder 10 others between 2015 and 2016.

She denies all charges.

Manchester Crown Court previously heard that Child O was one of a set of triplets, who was born in good condition and was stable until the afternoon of 23 June.

Dr Andreas Marnerides, an expert in neonatal pathology, said he believed Child O's death was a result of an "inflicted traumatic injury to the liver" and the injection of air into the boy's bloodstream via a nasogastric tube.

He said the level of injury sustained by the boy's liver was similar to what you would see after a traffic collision.

In cross examination, Dr Marnerides repeatedly rejected the suggestion that the injury could have been caused by vigorous CPR, which Child O needed on several occasions on 23 June.

"I have never seen this type of injury in the context of CPR," he said.

Ben Myers KC, defending, then put it to Dr Marnerides that the level of force required to cause such injury in a premature baby would be less than that needed in a grown child, to which the medic agreed.

Responding to Mr Myers's question about whether he knew the minimum force needed to cause such damage, he said there was "no way of measuring the force in a baby because we cannot conduct such experiments".

Dr Marnerides said that he believed "the force required would be of the magnitude of forces generated from a baby jumping on a trampoline and falling off".

Mr Myers then asked him whether vigorous CPR could be "categorically excluded" as a possibility for Child O's injuries.

Dr Marnerides compared it to the hypothetical discovery of a dead man in the desert with a pot next to him, saying it could be "possible" that a helicopter flew over and dropped the pot on his head, but that it was not "probable".

He previously said Child A, a twin boy, died as a result of an injection of air into his bloodstream.

Another boy, Child C, was subjected to an excessive infusion or injection of air into his nasogastric tube, he added.

He said the "likely explanation" for the death of Child D, a girl, was an air embolism into her circulation, while another girl, Child I, received an excessive injection of air into her stomach.

Dr Marnerides agreed that, in all of the cases, he had relied upon expert reports from Dr Dewi Evans, Dr Sarah Bohin and other clinicians.

He told the court that to discount the clinical evidence in forming his reports was like "asking someone to explain physics without using mathematics".

The trial continues.

Following nine months of evidence, a jury of seven women and four men have been deliberating for 15 days.

Over the course of the trial, they heard claims that Ms Letby had deliberately injected babies with air, injected some with insulin and overfed others with milk.

Judge Mr Justice James Goss said the new directions mean the jury will have to agree by 10-1 on any counts that are not unanimous.

Addressing the jury at Manchester Crown Court, Mr Justice Goss said: “I am going to ask you to return to your deliberating room and continue with your deliberations and strive to reach unanimous verdicts.

“However, the time has now come when it is possible for me to accept verdicts upon which you are not all agreed, commonly referred to as majority verdicts.

“It must be by a majority of at least 10 of you, either 11-0 or 10-1. Nothing else will do.”

A 12th juror was unable to continue and was discharged last week for “good personal reasons”.

Thanking the juror for their attendance during the trial over the past 10 months, the judge said he was sorry they were unable to continue.

“I imagine it must be slightly frustrating for you,” he added.

Prosecutors said Letby, 33, was a “calculated opportunist” who used the vulnerabilities of premature and sick infants to camouflage her acts.

In 2015 and 2016, there was a significant rise in the numbers of babies who suffered serious and unexpected collapses in the neonatal unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Letby was the only member of the nursing and clinical staff who was on duty each time the collapses happened, which the Crown argued were not natural events.

She used various ways to harm the babies including injecting air into the bloodstream, injecting air into the stomach, overfeeding with milk, physical assaults and poisoning with insulin.

Some of the children were subjected to repeated attempts to kill them by the “cold, cruel and relentless” band 5 staff nurse, the trial – which began at Manchester Crown Court last October – heard.

Letby’s presence when collapses took place was first mentioned to senior management by the unit’s head consultant in late June 2015.

Concerns among some consultants about the defendant increased and were voiced to hospital bosses when more unexplained and unusual collapses followed, the court heard.

But Letby was not removed from the unit until after the deaths of two triplet boys and the collapse of another baby boy on three successive days in June 2016.

Letby was confined to clerical work and in September 2016 registered a grievance procedure.

It emerged during legal argument in the trial – in the absence of the jury – that the grievance procedure was resolved in Letby’s favour in December 2016.

Letby was due to return to the neonatal unit in March 2017, but the move did not take place as soon after police were contacted by the hospital trust.

The nurse was arrested at her semi-detached home in Westbourne Road, Chester, at 6am on July 3 2018.

During searches of her address, a number of closely written notes were discovered.

On one green Post-it note she wrote: “I don’t deserve to live. I killed them on purpose because I’m not good enough to care for them”, “I am a horrible evil person” and in capital letters “I am evil I did this”.

Prosecutor Nick Johnson KC invited the jurors to read the note “literally” as a confession.

Also found during searches, the court heard, were more than 250 shift handover sheets containing names of some of the children on the trial indictment.

Mr Johnson said “voyeuristic tendencies” drove her to carry out numerous Facebook searches for parents of children she attacked.

The “rogue nurse” falsified medical notes to cover her tracks and also gaslighted doctors and nurses to persuade them the collapses were “just a run of bad luck”.

She was also prepared to publicly trash the reputations of colleagues “in an effort to get away with it”, the prosecutor added.

Letby, from Hereford, denied all the allegations.

The jury of seven women and four men returned partial verdicts as trial judge Mr Justice Goss imposed a reporting ban until their deliberations were complete.

On August 8 the jury – on its 15th day of deliberations – unanimously found her guilty of attempting to murder two infants by poisoning them with insulin.

Letby fought back tears in the middle of the dock after the verdicts were returned by the jury foreman.

She burst out crying as she left the courtroom with prison officers as relatives of the victims looked on from the public gallery.

Her mother Susan, 63, shielded her face as she wept on the opposite side of the public gallery and was comforted by husband John, 77, who later leaned forward with his head in his hands.

At the start of deliberations on the afternoon of August 11 the jury delivered verdicts on a further six counts.

--A senior manager in charge of nursing when Lucy Letby murdered and seriously injured babies in her care has been suspended. Alison Kelly and other managers at the Countess of Chester Hospital have been accused of ignoring warnings about Letby.

Nurse Lucy Letby, who was unmasked as the UK's most prolific child serial killer in modern times, has been given a whole-life sentence.

The 33-year-old was also convicted of trying to kill six other infants at the Countess of Chester Hospital between June 2015 and June 2016.

Letby deliberately injected babies with air, force fed others milk and poisoned two of the infants with insulin.

She refused to appear in the dock for her sentencing hearing.

Letby will face the rest of her life behind bars, becoming only the fourth woman in UK history to receive such a sentence.

Whole-life orders are the most severe punishment available in the countrys' criminal justice system and are reserved for those who commit the most heinous crimes.

Letby indicated she did not intend to return to the dock, did not want to take any part in her sentencing hearing, and would not follow the hearing via video-link from prison.

Mr Justice Goss said the court has no power to force a defendant to attend a sentencing hearing but a Government source told the Telegraph “lawful enforcement” could be used as a last resort to ensure Letby attends if it is considered necessary, reasonable and proportionate.

“Lucy Letby should be in court to hear society’s condemnation of the enormity of her crimes, expressed by the judge,” the source told the PA news agency.

“If that requires the use of lawful enforcement, so be it. If she continues to refuse, that will only strengthen our resolve to change the law as soon as we can.”

The serial killer nurse, Lucy Letby, will never be released from prison after she was sentenced to 4 rare whole-life terms for the “sadistic” murders of seven babies and trying to kill another six.

Letby, who is Britain’s worst child serial killer, refused to leave the court cells as the parents of her newborn victims described the horrifying impact of her crimes.

One bereaved mother called Letby’s absence “one final act of wickedness from a coward”.

A father, sobbing, said the murder of his two identical triplet sons had torn his family apart, leaving him suicidal and ruining their trust in medical professionals. “It has destroyed me as a man and as a father,” he said.

Letby, 33, became only the third woman alive to be handed a whole-life jail term as she was sentenced for murdering seven babies and trying to kill another six.

A number of her surviving victims have been left with life-changing disabilities, Manchester crown court was told.

One girl, now seven, is blind and has been diagnosed with quadriplegic cerebral palsy. She is nil-by-mouth and requires major spinal surgery.

Her father described how his daughter was born 15 weeks early, weighing 535g (1lb 3oz) and given just a 5% chance of survival. He told told the court that “God saved her” but then “the devil found her”.

The judge, James Justice Goss KC, described Letby’s crimes as a “cruel, calculated and cynical campaign of child murder involving the smallest and most vulnerable of children”.

He added: “There was a deep malevolence bordering on sadism in your actions. During the course of this trial you have coldly denied any responsibility for your wrongdoing and sought to attribute some fault to others. You have shown no remorse. There are no mitigating factors.”

Letby’s 10-month trial heard how she often attacked the infants moments after their parents or nurses had left their sides. She fatally injected seven babies with air, tried to kill two others by lacing their feeding bags with insulin and attempted to murder one by thrusting a nasogastric tube down his throat.

The judge said the nurse had shown a “detached enthusiasm” for the resuscitation of babies she had harmed and that she “cruelly and callously” made inappropriate remarks to parents or colleagues during or after a death.

She kept hundreds of medical documents as “morbid records of the dreadful events surrounding your victims and what you had done to them”, Goss said.

The motivation behind the murders is unclear and may never be known. The prosecutor, Nicholas Johnson KC, told the trial that Letby enjoyed “playing God” and was “excited” by the drama when doctors rushed to save the days-old babies she had attacked.

Goss said she appeared to take a particular interest in twins – three pairs of twins and one set of triplets were among her 13 victims – and in babies who were born with vulnerabilities.

However, the judge said it was not for him to “reach conclusions about the underlying reasons” for Letby’s actions. “Nor could I,” he added. “For they are known only to you.”

The mother of twin boys, one of whom was murdered and the other Letby poisoned with insulin, told the court Letby was a coward for failing to attend the sentencing hearing.

She said their world had been “shattered when we encountered evil disguised as a caring nurse,” and she added: “We have attended court day in and day out, yet she decides she has had enough, and stays in her cell – just one final act of wickedness from a coward.”

A law firm representing the families of seven of Letby’s victims described her refusal to appear in court as “the final insult”.

“By not facing the consequences of her actions, it speaks of her complete disregard not only for the damage she’s caused, but also to our judicial system,” said Tamlin Bolton, a solicitor for law firm Switalskis.

Alex Chalk, the justice secretary, said Letby had taken “the coward’s approach” by refusing to appear in the dock on Monday.

Chalk said ministers were looking to change the law “at the earliest opportunity” to require that “the worst offenders attend court to face justice, when ordered by the judge”.

Whole-life orders, like the ones handed to Letby, are reserved for crimes of exceptional gravity.

The other two women serving whole-life terms are Rose West, who tortured and killed at least nine young women in the 1970s and 1980s, and Joanna Dennehy, who murdered three men in what came to be known as the Peterborough ditch murders in 2013.

It has been set up by Sarrita Adams - a 'scientific consultant' based in California - "to ensure that scientific evidence is used responsibly in the criminal justice system".

She hopes to recruit scientists and lawyers, among others, to help with the appeal. Donations are not yet open on the website but there is a "coming soon" note.

The Telegraph has done some digging on Adams, and found that, though the sites' founder describes herself as ‘a scientist with rare expertise in rare paediatric diseases’ , Adams has not worked as a scientist since obtaining her PhD in biochemistry from Cambridge University.

It turns out that she has only ever published two pieces of unsuccessful research, according to PubMed database of biochemical research, and the last was in 2013.

The site states: "Our first mission is to campaign for a new trial for Lucy Letby, who was recently convicted of murdering infants, under her care at the Countess of Chester Hospital, UK.

Through fundraising, researching, and legal assistance, we aim to ensure that Lucy Letby can have a fair trial where evidence is reliable. We are currently working to form a group of scientists, lawyers, and activists to aid in the upcoming appeal for Lucy Letby."

In a separate statement, Ms Adams goes on criticise the medical evidence that was presented at the trial. This includes the level of insulin detected in two of Letby's victims - this is despite the killer not denying they were injected with insulin. Instead, she said it was not her who did it. Medical expert Dr Dewi Evans' evidence was also criticised.

Twisted serial killer Lucy Letby - who fooled friends and family into believing she was just an ordinary and 'vanilla' young woman - is set to die behind bars.

The former NHS neonatal nurse, 33, is the fourth woman in Britain to be handed a whole-life order, which is reserved for only the most heinous crimes.

Her campaign of terror on innocent infants in her care took place between June 2015 and June 2016 at the Countess of Chester Hospital, where she deliberately harmed babies by injecting them with air and insulin or overfeeding them with milk.

It was five years ago that she was escorted out of her child-like bedroom and put into the back of a police car in handcuffs. What followed was a lengthy 10-month trial in which she was found her guilty of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill six others. While she has spent time in four prisons so far, nothing will have prepared her for her new lifelong sentence as a Category A prisoner with a target on her head.

The average life sentence is 16.5 years, but 'whole-lifers' cannot escape - the Parole Board will never review their case. Letby will likely start her sentence in either HMP Bronzefield in Surrey, where she's already served time, or at HMP Low Newton, in Durham.

Bronzefield is the largest women's prison in Europe, where Rose West spent time before being transferred. Current inmates include Shauna Hoare, who was found guilty of manslaughter for the killing of Becky Watts in 2015; and the al-Qaeda fanatic Roshonara Choudhry, who stabbed Labour MP Stephen Timms in 2010.

Meanwhile, Low Newton, a maximum security prison, has housed female killers Joanna Dennehy, Rose West, Bernadette McNeilly, and the mother of tragic tot Baby P, Tracey Connelly.

A former inmate of Bronzfield, Sophie Campell, claimed her time at the women's prison was so disturbing that she was compelled to write a memoir about it, Breakfast At Bronzefield. The woman, who was convicted for GBH of a police officer, said violence was commonplace within the jail's walls.

Releasing her story in 2020, she said: "I couldn't believe how offenders were treated by the officers. You wonder how they got away with a lot of it – neglecting inmates in their cells, depriving them of their meals, not giving them much-needed medical attention, or being too rough during searches."

She added: "As well as same-sex relationships thriving in Bronzefield, some female prisoners were engaging in sexual favours with the officers to get drugs or food, and that was a real shock for me. It's so horrible how normalised it is, often gossiped and giggled about.

"Violence is everywhere. It puts you on edge. You have to be alert as a situation can escalate rapidly. That's why you learn to adopt a new code of conduct inside."

She also spoke of witnessing a woman having boiling hot water thrown over her face during her first few weeks, adding: "It rattles you. You know it could be you – say the wrong thing, or look at the wrong person and you could be burned and blistered and never offered medical treatment."

Experts say that Letby will have 'restricted status' for an inmate, which is considered the female equivalent of Category A - meaning she is the highest-risk threat to the public. It is said she will be on suicide watch for some months and it will be a while before she is integrated with other prisoners.

She will start off her whole life sentence living in the hospital wing of the prison while they assess her mental and physical health, and as a way of protecting her safety from other inmates. Eventually, she'll be moved into her own cell.

This is a routine procedure for every inmate found guilty of murder, on the assumption that anyone who faces decades in prison will contemplate taking their own life. It will take place in a number of forms - from CCTV cameras watching Letby to direct supervision from officers, noting her moves every 10 minutes.

"She'll be what's known as a 'restricted status' prisoner," Mark Leech, a prisons expert and editor of The Prison Oracle website told the Telegraph. "She'll be on suicide watch and it will be some time before she gets to mingle with the main prison population - at least six months."

A nurse arrested at a childrens' hospital is alleged to have poisoned a baby as police probe three deaths.

A child admitted to the paediatric intensive care unit at Birmingham Children's Hospital died "suddenly and unexpectedly," new documents show. The findings of a medic-led investigation into it, and two other tragedies at the hospital, have been handed to police.

Bosses at Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust were said to have conducted a probe into "child deaths and sudden collapses". Staff members alerted the authorities of the case when one child rapidly deteriorated and died the next day on May 18, 2022.

A nurse was suspended and West Midland Police arrested her at her home in connection with the incident on suspicion of administering a poison with intent to endanger life. Other deaths at the hospital, in connection with which she has not been arrested, are thought to date as far back as January last year, reports Birmingham Live.

Dr Fiona Reynolds, chief medical officer at Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust, said her priority is now patient safety. In a statement, published by Sunday Times, she said: "In May 2022, a child on the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Birmingham Children’s Hospital deteriorated suddenly and unexpectedly. Due to the circumstances of the deterioration, the Trust acted straight away. A member of staff was suspended from work and subsequently arrested at home. This was widely reported at the time.

"Sadly, the child later died and our thoughts remain with the family. The Trust immediately followed the standard safeguarding protocol for the sudden unexpected death of a child and West Midlands Police were notified the same day.

"An extensive clinical review of deaths and sudden deteriorations in children on the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit has been undertaken by clinicians at the Trust. Their findings have in turn been reviewed by independent experts and shared with the police."

The statement added: "We have communicated with all families where the care of their child has been reviewed and have responded openly to all requests from West Midlands Police and the Coroner on this matter. At all times our priority is patient safety which is why we took decisive action without delay."

The suspect cannot work as a nurse anywhere else due to her suspension. She had been employed at the hospital, which has a 31-bed paediatric intensive care unit. A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: "The woman was arrested at a property in the West Midlands area on suspicion of administering poison with intent to endanger life."

The news comes as killer nurse Lucy Letby was this week jailed for life for murdering seven babies and trying to kill six more at a hospital in Chester. She has become the most prolific child serial killer in modern British history.

A midwife suspended after the tragic death of a baby under he care had "no evidence of remorse", a panel found.

Yvonne Tasker was a midwife at the General Hospital when the patient was put in her care in 2017. Sadly, the patients' child died before she gave birth a few hours later.

Tasker, a nurse since 1991, attended a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) hearing this month where she faced 21 charges relating to the patient’s care, most of which related to poor time keeping and a lack of communication. Although they conceded Tasker "recognised some of her failings" it did not cover all aspects of the charges and there was "no evidence of remorse."

After the hearing, the panel said: “Midwives occupy a position of privilege and trust in society and are expected at all times to be professional and to maintain professional boundaries. Patients and their families must be able to trust midwives with their lives and the lives of their loved ones.

"To justify that trust, midwives must be honest and open and act with integrity. They must make sure their conduct at all times justifies both their patients’ and the public’s trust in the profession.

“The panel finds that Patient A and her baby were put at risk as a result of Ms Tasker’s misconduct. The panel further found Ms Tasker’s misconduct had breached fundamental tenets of the midwifery profession and therefore brought its reputation into disrepute.”

Patient A was admitted at the hospital in October 2017 following an uneventful pregnancy for a labour assessment at 40 weeks. She was found to be in established labour but risk factors meant her labour should have been consultant-led, rather than midwife-led and a care plan should have been documented by the Obstetric Team (OT).

The panel also heard Tasker incorrectly categorised the patient as low risk and artificially broke the patient's water. She claimed she was given verbal consent which the mother-to-be refuted.

No foetal heart rate could be detected but Tasker took 15 minutes to alert the team when it should have been treated as an emergency. The consultant obstetrician confirmed the patient’s baby died in utero just after 11pm that night.

The panel decided not to strike Tasker off as it was felt it was not proportionate due to the fact the misconduct happened during one shift with no evidence it had happened before or since. Instead, it issued a one-year suspension order which she has 28 days to appeal the order before it takes effect.

A spokesperson for Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust said: “We’ve fully supported and participated in the NMC investigation. As a result of an internal investigation, we’ve introduced new systems, assurance processes and additional training for staff.

We would again like to offer sincere condolences to the family for the sad loss of their baby.”

Summing up at the end of her trial, judge Mr Justice Goss told the jury it was a case in which the prosecution "substantially, but not wholly" relied on circumstantial evidence.

News of her planned appeal comes after it was revealed a further court hearing will take place on 25 September where the Crown Prosecution Service will decide whether to pursue a retrial for six outstanding counts of attempted murder.

The jury was unable to reach verdicts on those counts at the end of Letby's trial.

Letby, who became the UK's most prolific child serial killer in modern British history, refused to appear in the dock for her sentencing hearing on 21 August.

The judge proceeded without her and said he was addressing her as if she were in the dock.

She was given repeated whole-life terms - one for each offence - becoming only the fourth woman in UK history to receive such a sentence.

Whole-life orders are the most severe punishment available and are reserved for those who commit the most heinous crimes.

Judge Goss said the "cruelty and calculation" of Letby's actions between June 2015 and June 2016 were "truly horrific".

"You acted in a way that was completely contrary to the normal human instincts of nurturing and caring for babies and in gross breach of the trust that all citizens place in those who work in the medical and caring professions," he said.

"There was a malevolence bordering on sadism in your actions.

"During the course of this trial you have coldly denied any responsibility for your wrongdoing.

"You have no remorse. There are no mitigating factors."

He said Letby, originally from Hereford, would be provided with copies of his remarks and the personal statements of the parents.

The mother of one baby boy killed by Letby said she was "horrified that someone so evil exists".

A candlelit vigil to remember the victims was held at Chester Cathedral on Sunday evening.

The Department of Health has said an independent inquiry will be held into Letby's case, and will examine "the circumstances surrounding the deaths and incidents, including how concerns raised by clinicians were dealt with".

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said it was seeking a retrial on one of the outstanding charges - that Letby attempted to murder a baby girl, known as Baby K, in February 2016.

Nicholas Johnson KC, prosecuting, confirmed the Crown was not pursuing a retrial on the other five outstanding allegations involving two baby girls and two baby boys.

It was estimated the retrial would last up to three weeks.

'Met With Families'

Her barrister told the court Letby, who was acquitted of two counts of attempted murder by the jury, maintained her innocence on all charges.

Letby lodged an appeal against her convictions at the Court of Appeal earlier this month.

Jonathan Storer, chief crown prosecutor, said decisions on whether to seek retrials were "extremely complex and difficult".

"Before reaching our conclusions, we listened carefully to the views of the families affected, police and prosecution counsel," he said.

"Many competing factors were considered, including the evidence heard by the court during the long trial and its impact on our legal test for proceeding with a prosecution.

"We have met with all the families affected by these decisions to explain how they were reached."

The families of babies killed and harmed by Lucy Letby have welcomed the launch of a corporate manslaughter investigation at the hospital where she carried out her crimes, saying there must be “no hiding place” for those responsible for institutional failings.

On Wednesday, Cheshire Constabulary said it was investigating the Countess of Chester Hospital’s (COCH) senior leadership and decision-making to determine whether any criminality had occurred.

The announcement was welcomed by parents of the babies targeted by Letby when she worked at the hospital’s neonatal unit between 2015 and 2016.

Letby was sentenced to a whole-life order in August after jurors at Manchester Crown Court found her guilty of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder of six others.

Last month, she formally lodged an appeal against her convictions at the Court of Appeal.

Tamlin Bolton, a specialist medical negligence lawyer and senior associate solicitor at Switalskis, who is representing the families of seven babies who were victims of Letby, said: “This is significant news.

“The families we represent have continued to request that senior management at the Countess of Chester Hospital be investigated and/or be part of investigations moving forward.

“We are reassured that some steps are now being taken to consider the actions of management from a criminal perspective.”

Ms Bolton added: “Whilst the news is welcomed, this announcement brings with it fresh anguish for the families as they wait for the conclusion of these further criminal investigations.”

The parents of twin babies Letby was found guilty of harming said on Wednesday: “We welcome the news this morning of corporate manslaughter charges against COCH.

“There must be something in it for police to investigate. Hopefully now there will be no hiding place for the senior management of that trust.

“There is definitely more to this. People who aided Letby to carry on her deeds need to be brought to justice. I’m sure the police will do this during their investigation and I’m grateful to them for all the dedicated support they have given us.”

Announcing the investigation Det Supt Simon Blackwell, strategic lead for Operation Hummingbird, a continuing police investigation into Letby, said: “The investigation will focus on the indictment period of the charges for Lucy Letby, from June 2015 to June 2016, and consider areas including senior leadership and decision-making to determine whether any criminality has taken place.

“At this stage, we are not investigating any individuals in relation to gross negligence manslaughter.

“The investigation is in the very early stages and we are unable to go into any further details or answer specific questions at this time.

This comes five months after the monster was given a whole life sentence with not chance of parole for the murder of seven newborn babies and attempting to kill six others.

Having the key to her cell means that Letby, 34, can lock herself away from fellow inmates if she feels threatened by them.

It is believed that keys are handed to the residents of category A HMP Bronzefield as a reward for good behaviour on the inside.

The move has caused significant upset for the grieving parents of Letby's victims.

A prison insider told the paper that the VIP arrangement means Letby can socialise if she wants to, but can also have privacy if she wants.

They said it was 'no different to living in a hotel - but you're surrounded by criminals'.

Letby was previously moved to HMP Bronzefield from Low Newton jail in County Durham.

This comes after baby murderer Letby reportedly 'became prison friends' with two other killers whilst she was held on remand before her trial in August.

Letby was said to have bonded with Michelle Smith, a woman who murdered her own 42-day-old baby, and Shauna Hoare, who helped kill 16-year-old schoolgirl Becky Watts.

A source told The Mirror that the trio of killers had been playing board games together and sat with each other when it came to eating meals.

The child's parents were in court to hear the announcement. Letby attended the hour-long hearing via video link while her parents were absent.

The prosecution is not pursuing a retrial on the five other charges of attempted murder, relating to four babies – two girls, Baby H and Baby J, and two boys, Baby N and Baby Q.

Letby refused to come up from the cells when Mr Justice Goss sentenced her to 14 whole life terms following her convictions on August 21. She has applied for leave to appeal her convictions.

In September Letby launched an appeal against all her convictions.

Labour City of Chester MP Samantha Dixon criticised the prison chiefs for the decision to give Letby the key to her cell, saying it did not 'feel right or fair'.

A spokesperson for HMP Bronzefield spokesman told The Sunday People: 'Prisoners in some of our main units have a privacy key to the cell they reside in, so they are able to secure their personal belongings.'...

Letby sat behind a table with her solicitor from Chester police station as the charges were read out this morning. She spoke only to confirm her name, date of birth and address. The families whose babies were involved listened to proceedings on a video conference call because of social distancing measures. 30 year old Lucy Letby has been re-arrested as part of an investigation which began three years ago. Letby, of Arran Avenue, Hereford, is accused of murdering five baby boys Cemlyn Bennett, Joseph Johnson, Barney Gee, Joseph Gelder and Eli Gelder. The baby girls were named as Elsie McNall, Daisy Parkin and Maddie Freed. An alternative charge of attempted murder has been included for Maddie Freed as she died on February 20th 2016 – described in court as “some time” after leaving hospital. Her attempted murder allegedly took place three days earlier on February 17th. The former nurse appeared composed as she sat up straight throughout the 12-minute hearing at Warrington magistrates' cout. He also said that when Letby was moved to the day shift, there was a rise in unusual collapses and deaths on the day shift. Mr Johnson said police were called in and conducted a “pain-staking review” after medics could not account for the collapses and deaths. He said: “That review suggests that in the period between mid-2015 and the middle of 2016 somebody in the neo-natal unit poisoned two children with insulin. “The prosecution says that the only reasonable conclusion to be drawn from the evidence you will hear is that somebody poisoned these babies deliberately with insulin. The court heard the nurse urged the mother of Child E to go back to her ward, which she did, but was so concerned she phoned her husband. The jury heard after Child E's death his parents did not wish to have a post-mortem examination, the doctor on-call did not deem one necessary and the coroner's office agreed. "As subsequent reviews have established that was a big mistake," Mr Johnson said. He alleged Child E was murdered by an injection of air. 'Not an accident' The prosecution also told the court Ms Letby added insulin to Child F's feed. This caused Child F's blood sugar to start to drop calamitously while Ms Letby was present and continued after she had gone. Mr Johnson said: "Somebody poisoned him. No other baby on the neonatal unit was being prescribed insulin. Therefore it couldn't have been negligence. "You know who was in the room, and you know from the records who hung the [feed] bag." The court heard Child F's nutrients bag was replaced and he survived, but the medical team on the unit were concerned and ordered checks. It was also claimed Ms Letby took a "very unusual interest" in the parents of the twins, searching for them repeatedly on Facebook, including on Christmas Day in 2015. The baby was born at a different hospital weighing 1lb 2oz (510g) and had later been transferred to the Chester hospital. She had been there three weeks and was "perfectly well" but then vomited and showed signs of infection, the jury heard. She was subsequently transferred away from the Countess of Chester Hospital back to the hospital where she was born, and made a "remarkable recovery". Nurse poisoned babies with insulin, trial told The jury was told once Child G recovered, she was then transferred back to Chester, where Ms Letby allegedly gave her milk via a tube and in little over an hour she had projectile vomited twice and was not breathing. There had been "no significant issues" with Child G "until Lucy Letby got involved", the court heard. "Putting it simply the milk in her vomit did not come from nowhere. That doesn't happen by accident," Mr Johnson said. An MRI scan taken between the events revealed neurological changes and an MRI scan some months later in August 2016 confirmed Child G had sustained irreversible brain damage. "You can now see there was a pattern emerging," Mr Johnson said. "Lucy Letby was the only person working on the night shift when Child C died who had also been working on either of the shifts when Child A died and his twin sister Child B collapsed." 'Constant presence' Mr Johnson told the court Ms Letby's method of attacking the babies was "beginning to develop". "She had injected air into the bloodstream of the first twins, Child A and B, and varied this approach by injecting air into Child C's stomach via the nasogastric tube," he said. The nurse is charged with murdering seven babies and attempting to murder 10 others between 2015 and 2016. *She denies all charges.* Manchester Crown Court previously heard that Child O was one of a set of triplets, who was born in good condition and was stable until the afternoon of 23 June. Dr Andreas Marnerides, an expert in neonatal pathology, said he believed Child O's death was a result of an "inflicted traumatic injury to the liver" and the injection of air into the boy's bloodstream via a nasogastric tube. He said the level of injury sustained by the boy's liver was similar to what you would see after a traffic collision. In cross examination, Dr Marnerides repeatedly rejected the suggestion that the injury could have been caused by vigorous CPR, which Child O needed on several occasions on 23 June. "I have never seen this type of injury in the context of CPR," he said. Ben Myers KC, defending, then put it to Dr Marnerides that the level of force required to cause such injury in a premature baby would be less than that needed in a grown child, to which the medic agreed. Responding to Mr Myers's question about whether he knew the minimum force needed to cause such damage, he said there was "no way of measuring the force in a baby because we cannot conduct such experiments". Dr Marnerides said that he believed "the force required would be of the magnitude of forces generated from a baby jumping on a trampoline and falling off". The nurse is accused of carrying out the attacks at Countess of Chester Hospital Mr Myers then asked him whether vigorous CPR could be "categorically excluded" as a possibility for Child O's injuries. Dr Marnerides compared it to the hypothetical discovery of a dead man in the desert with a pot next to him, saying it could be "possible" that a helicopter flew over and dropped the pot on his head, but that it was not "probable". He previously said Child A, a twin boy, died as a result of an injection of air into his bloodstream. Another boy, Child C, was subjected to an excessive infusion or injection of air into his nasogastric tube, he added. He said the "likely explanation" for the death of Child D, a girl, was an air embolism into her circulation, while another girl, Child I, received an excessive injection of air into her stomach. Dr Marnerides agreed that, in all of the cases, he had relied upon expert reports from Dr Dewi Evans, Dr Sarah Bohin and other clinicians. He told the court that to discount the clinical evidence in forming his reports was like "asking someone to explain physics without using mathematics". The trial continues. In 2015 and 2016, there was a significant rise in the numbers of babies who suffered serious and unexpected collapses in the neonatal unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital. Letby was the only member of the nursing and clinical staff who was on duty each time the collapses happened, which the Crown argued were not natural events. She used various ways to harm the babies including injecting air into the bloodstream, injecting air into the stomach, overfeeding with milk, physical assaults and poisoning with insulin. Some of the children were subjected to repeated attempts to kill them by the “cold, cruel and relentless” band 5 staff nurse, the trial – which began at Manchester Crown Court last October – heard. Letby’s presence when collapses took place was first mentioned to senior management by the unit’s head consultant in late June 2015. Concerns among some consultants about the defendant increased and were voiced to hospital bosses when more unexplained and unusual collapses followed, the court heard. *But Letby was not removed from the unit until after the deaths of two triplet boys and the collapse of another baby boy on three successive days in June 2016.* Letby was confined to clerical work and in September 2016 registered a grievance procedure. It emerged during legal argument in the trial – in the absence of the jury – that the grievance procedure was resolved in Letby’s favour in December 2016. Letby was due to return to the neonatal unit in March 2017, but the move did not take place as soon after police were contacted by the hospital trust. The nurse was arrested at her semi-detached home in Westbourne Road, Chester, at 6am on July 3 2018. During searches of her address, a number of closely written notes were discovered. On one green Post-it note she wrote: “I don’t deserve to live. I killed them on purpose because I’m not good enough to care for them”, “I am a horrible evil person” and in capital letters “I am evil I did this”. Prosecutor Nick Johnson KC invited the jurors to read the note “literally” as a confession. Also found during searches, the court heard, were more than 250 shift handover sheets containing names of some of the children on the trial indictment. Mr Johnson said “voyeuristic tendencies” drove her to carry out numerous Facebook searches for parents of children she attacked. The “rogue nurse” falsified medical notes to cover her tracks and also gaslighted doctors and nurses to persuade them the collapses were “just a run of bad luck”. She was also prepared to publicly trash the reputations of colleagues “in an effort to get away with it”, the prosecutor added. Letby, from Hereford, denied all the allegations. The jury of seven women and four men returned partial verdicts as trial judge Mr Justice Goss imposed a reporting ban until their deliberations were complete. On August 8 the jury – on its 15th day of deliberations – unanimously found her guilty of attempting to murder two infants by poisoning them with insulin. Letby fought back tears in the middle of the dock after the verdicts were returned by the jury foreman. She burst out crying as she left the courtroom with prison officers as relatives of the victims looked on from the public gallery. Her mother Susan, 63, shielded her face as she wept on the opposite side of the public gallery and was comforted by husband John, 77, who later leaned forward with his head in his hands. Bosses at Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust were said to have conducted a probe into "child deaths and sudden collapses". Staff members alerted the authorities of the case when one child rapidly deteriorated and died the next day on May 18, 2022. A nurse was suspended and West Midland Police arrested her at her home in connection with the incident on suspicion of administering a poison with intent to endanger life. Other deaths at the hospital, in connection with which she has not been arrested, are thought to date as far back as January last year, reports Birmingham Live. Dr Fiona Reynolds, chief medical officer at Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust, said her priority is now patient safety. In a statement, published by Sunday Times, she said: "In May 2022, a child on the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Birmingham Children’s Hospital deteriorated suddenly and unexpectedly. Due to the circumstances of the deterioration, the Trust acted straight away. A member of staff was suspended from work and subsequently arrested at home. This was widely reported at the time. "Sadly, the child later died and our thoughts remain with the family. The Trust immediately followed the standard safeguarding protocol for the sudden unexpected death of a child and West Midlands Police were notified the same day. Yvonne Tasker, a nurse since 1991, has been suspended following the death of an unborn baby hours before it was assistantly born A midwife suspended after the tragic death of a baby under he care had "no evidence of remorse", a panel found. Yvonne Tasker was a midwife at the General Hospital when the patient was put in her care in 2017. Sadly, the patients' child died before she gave birth a few hours later. Tasker, a nurse since 1991, attended a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) hearing this month where she faced 21 charges relating to the patient’s care, most of which related to poor time keeping and a lack of communication. Although they conceded Tasker "recognised some of her failings" it did not cover all aspects of the charges and there was "no evidence of remorse." After the hearing, the panel said: “Midwives occupy a position of privilege and trust in society and are expected at all times to be professional and to maintain professional boundaries. Patients and their families must be able to trust midwives with their lives and the lives of their loved ones. "To justify that trust, midwives must be honest and open and act with integrity. They must make sure their conduct at all times justifies both their patients’ and the public’s trust in the profession. “The panel finds that Patient A and her baby were put at risk as a result of Ms Tasker’s misconduct. The panel further found Ms Tasker’s misconduct had breached fundamental tenets of the midwifery profession and therefore brought its reputation into disrepute.” Patient A was admitted at the hospital in October 2017 following an uneventful pregnancy for a labour assessment at 40 weeks. She was found to be in established labour but risk factors meant her labour should have been consultant-led, rather than midwife-led and a care plan should have been documented by the Obstetric Team (OT). The panel also heard Tasker incorrectly categorised the patient as low risk and artificially broke the patient's water. She claimed she was given verbal consent which the mother-to-be refuted. No foetal heart rate could be detected but Tasker took 15 minutes to alert the team when it should have been treated as an emergency. The consultant obstetrician confirmed the patient’s baby died in utero just after 11pm that night. The panel decided not to strike Tasker off as it was felt it was not proportionate due to the fact the misconduct happened during one shift with no evidence it had happened before or since. Instead, it issued a one-year suspension order which she has 28 days to appeal the order before it takes effect. A spokesperson for Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust said: “We’ve fully supported and participated in the NMC investigation. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said it was seeking a retrial on one of the outstanding charges - that Letby attempted to murder a baby girl, known as Baby K, in February 2016. Nicholas Johnson KC, prosecuting, confirmed the Crown was not pursuing a retrial on the other five outstanding allegations involving two baby girls and two baby boys. It was estimated the retrial would last up to three weeks. On Wednesday, Cheshire Constabulary said it was investigating the Countess of Chester Hospital’s (COCH) senior leadership and decision-making to determine whether any criminality had occurred. The announcement was welcomed by parents of the babies targeted by Letby when she worked at the hospital’s neonatal unit between 2015 and 2016. Letby was sentenced to a whole-life order in August after jurors at Manchester Crown Court found her guilty of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder of six others. Last month, she formally lodged an appeal against her convictions at the Court of Appeal. Tamlin Bolton, a specialist medical negligence lawyer and senior associate solicitor at Switalskis, who is representing the families of seven babies who were victims of Letby, said: “This is significant news. “The families we represent have continued to request that senior management at the Countess of Chester Hospital be investigated and/or be part of investigations moving forward. “We are reassured that some steps are now being taken to consider the actions of management from a criminal perspective.” Ms Bolton added: “Whilst the news is welcomed, this announcement brings with it fresh anguish for the families as they wait for the conclusion of these further criminal investigations.” The parents of twin babies Letby was found guilty of harming said on Wednesday: “We welcome the news this morning of corporate manslaughter charges against COCH. “There must be something in it for police to investigate. Hopefully now there will be no hiding place for the senior management of that trust. “There is definitely more to this. People who aided Letby to carry on her deeds need to be brought to justice. It is believed that keys are handed to the residents of category A HMP Bronzefield as a reward for good behaviour on the inside. A prison insider told the paper that the VIP arrangement means Letby can socialise if she wants to, but can also have privacy if she wants.
