Doomsday Clock 2022 to be Unveiled Today as Scientists Explain if Earth is Closer to Apocalypse

The Doomsday clock - which tracks how close the world has moved to catastrophic destruction - is set to be unveiled at 3pm today for the 75th time in a live event

After another year of pandemic struggles, climate energy and escalating threats of international war, scientists and political leaders will gather today to announce how close the world is to global disaster.

The Doomsday Clock is designed to warn humanity about how close the apocalypse is - and we will learn today if it will change this year.

It has become a symbol representing the likelihood of a man-made international catastrophe that could cause humanity's annihilation since 1947 and this update will be the 75th unveiling of the grim icon.

The clock’s minute hand was originally set at seven midnight to midnight – the point of a hypothetical worldwide disaster – but moved to 100 seconds to midnight in 2020.

The Doomsday Clock has not changed for the past two years

This is the closest it has ever been in the clock's 75-year history.

'For 75 years, the Doomsday Clock has acted as a metaphor for how close humanity is to self-annihilation,' reads the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists' website.

'Since 1947, it has also served as a call-to-action to reverse the hands, which have moved backwards before.'

With war looming between Russia and Ukraine, ongoing climate disaster and the coronavirus pandemic, it's difficult to believe that scientists will turn back the clock.

It is set by Officials from the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, an organisation concerned with global security issues.

It warns the public how close we are to destroying our world with dangerous technologies

It considers factors such as climate change and nuclear war

Factors considered by the non-profit group include the risk of nuclear war and climate change, which pose a threat to humanity.

On Thursday at 3pm, the Bulletin will gather to announce whether the minute hand of the clock will move one step closer to midnight.

Since 2007, the clock has also taken into account the effect of climate change on the world.

Speaking last year, Rachel Bronson, president and chief executive of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, cited numerous factors behind the decision to not change the clock's time.

She said: "We recognise that humanity continues to suffer as the Covid-19 pandemic spreads around the world.

"The pandemic revealed just how unprepared and unwilling countries and the international system are to handle global emergencies properly.

"In this time of genuine crisis, governments around the world too often abdicated responsibility, ignored scientific advice, did not co-operate to communicate effectively and consequently failed to protect health and welfare of their citizens."

This year, the clock will be updated on Tuesday 23 Jan. at 10:00 am EST in Washington, D.C. The last announcement in January 2023 came before the beginning of the Israel-Hamas war but amid nuclear tension surrounding Russias' invasion of Ukraine.

The Doomsday Clock has been updated for 2024 - and it's not good news for the fate of humanity.

Last years' unveiling saw the symbolic clock tick closer to midnight after remaining unchanged for the previous three years. The hands were reset to just 90 seconds to 12 "largely (though not exclusively) because of the mounting dangers of the war in Ukraine".

Before then the world had consistently been 100 seconds away from "midnight” — the hour of apocalypse — since 2020, the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic. Further destabilising events have rocked the world since then, from Russia's invasion of Ukraine to the ongoing war in Gaza.

Now the clock has been updated in a Tuesday morning ceremony at the Keller Centre at the University of Chicago. It now reads 90 SECONDS to midnight.
