Oh Crap! re: The HALLOWEEN Thread >CREEPY Stuff, Recipes & Wallpapers/Fonts/Icons

HALLOWEEN 2016 .............

With great help from Irish Culture and Customs, we put together a list of 30 Halloween words in Irish, along with their pronunciations.
So now you can finally call your friend a Hobgoblin in Irish, you can tell your Irish gran to watch out for that ghostly, sinister, supernatural werewolf, or teach your trick or treaters the Gaelic spin on their favorite door-to-door greeting:

Trick or Treat: Cleas nó cóir (class noh koh-ir)

Witch/Witch's Broomstick: Cailleach/scuab chaillí (kyle-yeukh/scoob khyle-ee)

Bat: Sciathán (shkee-hawn)

Sinister: Drochtuarach (dhrukth-oor-ukh)

Scare/Scared: Scanradh/scanraithe (skahn-rah/skahn-rah-heh)

Haunt/Haunted: Gnáthóg/gnáthaithe (gnaw-hohg/gnaw-ah-heh)

Ghost: Púca or taibhse (pookah or thyve-sheh)

Hobgoblin: Bobodha (bub-uh-dhah)

Costume: Culaith (kul-ah)

Turnip: Tornapa (thurn-ah-pah)

Pumpkin: Puimcín (pim-keen)

Ghostly/spooky: Taibhsiúil (thyev-shool)

Banshee: Bean sí (bahn-shee)

Scream/shriek: scréach (shkraykh)

Moon: Gealach (gi-ahl-ukh)

Shadow: scáth or scáil (skaw or skaw-il)

Tomb: Tuama (thoo-mah)

Graveyard: Reilg (rell-ig)

Coffin: Cónra (kohn-rah)

Skeleton: Creatlach (krath-lukh)

Spirit: Anam (ah-nahm)

Monster: Ollphéist (ull-fayshth)

Nightmare: Tromluí (thrum-lee)

How 'Féile Na Marbh' or 'Feast of The Dead' ... Became >>> Halloween

Irish Central, 30 October 2016

That which we know as All Hallows Eve actually began as a harvest festival several millennia ago in Ireland. Though the evening’s popular colors are black and orange, they might as well be Forty Shades of Green, for the customs of the celebration are as Irish as the shamrock.

The ancient Celtic year was divided by the four seasons and reckoned by a lunar calendar. The full moon that rose midway between the Autumnal Equinox and Winter Solstice was called Samhain. It was the most scary and sacred time of all.

Winter was approaching, crops were dying, days were growing shorter, and the specter of death hung heavy in the air. Cattle were slaughtered and salted to feed the people through winter. Crops were gathered in and stored lest the shape-shifting Pooka, a nocturnal hobgoblin that delights in tormenting mortals, destroy the fruits of the field and bring on a season of famine. With storehouses full, the Celts marked the 3-day full moon period with revelry and ritual before facing the unknown.

Consumed with fear that they might be carted away to the land of the dead, the Irish lit huge bonfires to ward off evil forces. At night they listened to seanachies tell how the Gaels had defeated the magical Tuatha De Danaan. Undaunted, the Tuatha De plagued their conquerors with trickery, depriving them of milk and grain. Finally, a compromise was reached and the land was divided into two parts. The Gaels had won the right to live above ground; the fairy folk agreed to live underground.

The Gaels had won the right to live above ground; the fairy folk agreed to live underground.

But on Samhain the veil between this and the Otherworld was thin. The fairies roamed at will, the mounds marking the entries to their dwelling places glowed with eerie light, and many a mortal disappeared, lured to live forever below ground with the fairy Sidhe.

This was Feile Na Marbh, Feast of the Dead. Children born that night were blessed with ‘double sight,’ able to see and play with the fairies.

Spirits appeared to ordinary folk advising them of future events. Long-dead ancestors sought the warmth of a hearth fire and communion with the living. In every window, flickering candles lit the way for lost souls.

In 432AD Saint Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland, but the old ways persisted. Rome attempted to take the easy way out and absorbed the tradition into its own calendar. For centuries, the Church had honored its martyrs and saints on May 13, so in 844AD Pope Gregory IV transferred the saints’ feast to November 1, renaming it All Hallows Day.

Five hundred years later, Celtic descendants were still celebrating their 3-day Feast of the Dead. In the 14th century, Rome decreed November 2 would be known as All Souls Day and masses would be said for the departed who had not yet been admitted to heaven. In an effort to finally eradicate the ancient festival, October 31 was titled All Hallows Eve and installed on the Church calendar as a vigil of preparation for the 2-day religious observance.

Christianity had absorbed Samhain, but the Celtic ceremony of honoring the dead – now fixed on October 31st and November 1st and 2nd instead of the final harvest full moon – remained. It was still an occasion for feasting and revelry. It was still the night when souls roved free. And it was still the time to seek answers on things unknown.

Hollowed out turnips, (which in Ireland are as big as pumpkins), were carved with fearsome faces, lit with candles, and placed in windows to scare away ghosts. People wore masquerades when out traveling to disguise themselves from creatures of the night. Youngsters went from house to house chanting for food for the poor in the name of Finn Mac Cuill, a tricky descendant of the Tuatha De Danaan.

The turnip predated the pumpkin in Ireland.

Meals featured the fruits of the late harvest. No Hallows Eve dinner was complete without a steaming bowl of potato-cabbage Colcannon, crowned with a deep puddle of melted golden butter. Baked into the fruity Barm Brack dessert cake were fortune-telling tokens: a button for the bachelor, a coin for the rich man, a wooden matchstick for the pauper, and a thimble for the spinster. And whoever found the cake’s hidden gold ring would certainly marry within the coming year!

In memory of the departed, crisp wafers called ‘Soul Cakes’ were kept by the door in easy reach of hungry guests – both mortal and immortal.

Revelers bobbed for apples in buckets of water and quenched their thirst with mugs of spiced cider. Casting a glance backward into a mirror might show the face of one’s future spouse. An egg white dropped in water could swirl into the initial of a someday betrothed’s name. Through the evening happy music from pipes and fiddles kept all but the friendliest spirits at bay.

Finally at midnight, church bells began to toll. For the following two days candles burned bright in every home in memory of all those who had gone before. Just as they always had during the Celtic festival of Samhain.

Nearly eight hundred years on, All Hallows Eve is yet the night for magic, mystery and merry making. Ghosts haunt the imagination and trick-or-treaters go begging for goodies from door to door.

Decorations have gone far beyond carved out turnips and become big business, with devotees of the night decorating their lawns, yards and homes even more lavishly – and definitely more ghoulishly – than Christmas. Costuming is limited only by the imagination, and parties spawned by this ancient Irish tradition now rival the revelry of Mardi Gras.

In New Orleans, which like New York boasts a long history of Irish immigration, Anne Rice’s annual Vampire Ball is the stuff of legend. Author of Interview with a Vampire and several sequels collectively known as The Vampire Chronicles, Anne Rice is Irish American to the core and her books continue the ‘undead tradition’ begun by Ireland’s own Bram Stoker.

While costuming at the Ball runs the gamut of all that is weird and wonderful, I spotted more than a few leprechauns, banshees, and fairy folk among the guests the year I attended. My costume? A drop dead come hither vampire, of course. Pardon the pun.

Sláinte!

Anne Rice’s annual Vampire Ball is the stuff of legend.

RECIPES

Soul Cakes

1 3⁄4 cups oatmeal
1⁄4 tsp baking powder
1⁄2 tsp salt
1 tbsp melted butter
8 tsp hot water

Preheat oven to 350F. Pulverize 1 cup oatmeal in a blender. In a small bowl, combine ground oats, baking powder and salt. Stir in butter.

Gradually add water to make a thick paste. Gather into a ball, place on a board lightly sprinkled with 1/4 cup oatmeal and roll around until completely covered with flakes. Spread another 1/4 cup of oatmeal on the board and flatten the ball into an 8-inch circle 1/4 inch thick. Cut in wedges and transfer to a pan covered with another 1/4 cup oatmeal.

Bake 15 minutes. When wedges are light brown, turn off heat, open oven door and let sit in the oven for about 5 minutes until firm and crisp. Makes 8 Soul Cakes.

Hot Spiced Cider

2 quarts apple cider
2 cups fresh orange juice
2 tsp whole cloves
cinnamon sticks
thin half-round orange slices

Warm cider, orange juice and cloves in a stainless steel pot. Serve with orange slices and cinnamon stick stirrers. Makes 2 1/2 quarts.

Colcannon

4 large potatoes, boiled, drained and mashed with milk
1 small head of cabbage, minced and sauteed until tender
1 stick butter, melted

Mix mashed potatoes with minced cooked cabbage. Mound in a serving bowl and make a deep depression in the center. Pour melted butter in the depression. Serve immediately. Serves 4.

Traditional Barm Brack

1 3/4 cups raisins
1 3/4 cups golden raisins
3 3/4 cup dark brown sugar
1 cup cold tea
4 ounces candied citrus peel, minced
Grated rind of 1 orange
8 tbsp melted butter
2 eggs, lightly beaten
4 cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1/2 tsp cinnamon
pinch of salt

5 fortune tokens, each wrapped in parchment paper (silver coin, non-plastic button, wooden matchstick, metal thimble, gold ring)

Preheat oven to 350F. Grease a 9-inch round cake pan; line with waxed paper. In a saucepan, heat raisins and sugar with tea, stirring, until sugar dissolves. Cool. Sift dry ingredients together; set aside. Add candied peel and grated rind to the raisin tea mixture. Stir in butter and eggs. Gradually add dry ingredients. Combine well.

Pour into prepared pan and hide the parchment wrapped fortune tokens deep in the batter. Bake for 1 1/2 hours, or until a cake tester can be withdrawn dry. Makes 1 cake.

OR...Use up to 1/2 cup whiskey to replace some of the tea.

Irish Halloween Scary Spirits From Dracula to the Banshee

Irish Central, 30 October 2016

The scariest of Halloween monsters and ghouls have the Irish to thank for their terrifying origins. We look at some of the best and most terrifying creations that the Irish unleashed upon the unsuspecting world on the Night of the Living Dead.

1. Dracula

"Dracula" the novel was written by Bram Stoker from Dublin, a lifetime lover of the darker elements of Irish folklore and mythology that inspired his most famous blood-sucking creation. A spirit you can get your teeth into.

2. Leprechaun

Not all leprechauns are friendly.

Not the cuddly one, or the pesky ones running off with their pots of gold but the one from the 1993 movie "Leprechaun" who almost knocked off Jennifer Aniston in one of her first roles.

Pity he didn’t succeed ...

3. Banshee

The terrifying banshee.

A sheet with eyeholes will do for anybody wishing to copy this iconic Irish Halloween terror on October 31. She is heard only when a loved one is dying. The word comes from the Irish "Bean Sí," literally meaning female fairy.

4. Devil

Never strike a deal with the devil.

The Devil is often referred to as Darby O’Gill, a mythological figure who is a much more wicked character than Walt's tame version.
In Ireland, he usually appears as an attractive man at a dance, but if any lady smitten with him looks down she will see his cloven hoof feet.

5. Headless Horseman

Dullahan.

A difficult Halloween costume to produce but keep your head up ... Dullahan is his name and he is said to inhabit an Irish wood near Westmeath.

6. Werewolves of Tipperary

Ancient texts refer to the half-man, half-wolf who inhabited this area. Old Gaelic chieftains used to visit and pray for their support before a battle.

7. The Undead Priest

Better be safe than sorry!

This is an old priest from the Dublin Mountains who locals swear appeared to them after his death in the 1920s. Many independent verifications were received, so best be wary of any priest on Halloween night just to be safe.

8. The Mayo Vampire

Said to have existed during the Famine and more than likely based on people who fled their homes during the hunger and lived in the woods near Westport, but locals swore he came for their children at night.

9. Jack O’Lantern

Image: Toby Ord/Wikicommons

Jack O’Lantern is where the modern pumpkin came from. Jack O'Lantern is said to be a ghostly spirit who trapped Satan in a cross-shaped tree hollow. When Jack died, he was barred from Heaven and Hell, suspended in a black abyss with only an ember in a carved-out turnip, the Devil's flashlight, to help him navigate.

10. The Meredith Monster

In the Parish Church of Ardtrea, near Cookstown, Co. Tyrone, there is a marble monument and inscription in memory of Thomas Meredith, D.D., who had been a Fellow of Trinity College, Dublin, and for six years rector of the parish. He died, according to the words of the inscription, on May 2, 1819, as a result of "a sudden and awful visitation." A local legend explains this "visitation," stating that a ghost haunted the rectory and it could often be seen afterward cackling over the death of Meredith.

Happy Halloween! Spookiest Ancient Irish Myths & Legends of Halloween aka Samhain

Irish Central 31 Oct 2017

Freak yourself out this Halloween with the spookiest ancient Irish myths and legends. iStock

Ancient Irish Halloween Myths and Legends to Get You into the Halloween and Samhain Festival Spirit

Samhain is the ancient Irish festival that became Halloween as we know it and its because of these Irish roots that we have plenty of Halloween-worthy spooky, ancient Irish legends and myths. Here's a look at the importance of Samhain in the Celtic calendar and Irish folklore.
Irish Halloween myths and legends - Celtic Celebrations

The Celts believed the year was divided into two parts, the lighter half in the summer and the darker half in the winter. Samhain, or Halloween as it is now called, was the division between these halves. The Celts believed that the veil between our world and the other world was thinnest at this time. Oíche Shamhna (October 31) is Halloween and Lá na Marbh (November 1) is the Day of the Dead, or All Saints Day, when those who have passed away are remembered.

According to the American Folklife Center at the U.S. Library of Congress, Celts wore costumes to confuse the spirits now roaming our world and to avoid capture.

Irish Halloween myths and legends - Fionn MacCool

According to one of the several stories recounted in the “Tales of the Elders,” every year at Samhain for twenty three years the fire breathing creature Aillen would lull the men of Tara to sleep and burn the court to the ground during the night. The young hero Fionn MacCumhail avoided sleep by sticking the sharp end of his spear into his forehead and killed Aillen with that spear on Samhain. Because of this deed, he was made head of the Fianna.

Irish Halloween myths and legends - Lugh

Probably best known as Cu Chulainn’s father, the god of light enters the court at Tara to join the Tuatha de Dannan at Samhain. According to Whitney Stokes’ 1891 volume “The Second Battle of Moytura,”when Lugh enters the court, the Tuatha de Danann are oppressed by the Fomorians. After the high king gives him command over the Tuatha de Danna, Lugh begins preparations to overthrow them. After days of battle, Lugh and the Tuatha de Danna are victorious.

Irish Halloween myths and legends - Queen Maeve

The tomb of Queen Maeve at Knocknarea.

In the ancient Irish epic poem, "Tain Bo Cualigne," the legendary Queen Maeve of Connacht waits until Samhain to start the Cattle Raid of Cooley. During her raid, which drives the plot of the epic, she attempts to capture a prize bull of Ulster in order to match the possessions of her husband Aillel. The young hero Cu Chulainn single-handedly defends Ulster until the Ulster men’s birth pangs are over and they can fight.

Irish Halloween myths and legends - Emer

As noted in John T. Koch’s “The Celts:Life, and Culture,” in the myth “The Wooing of Emer” Samhain is mentioned a couple times. The story follows the courtship of the lovely Emer, who is transformed into various creatures before being reunited with her husband. Samhain is the first of the four “quarter days” mentioned by the titled heroine. Also in this story, Oengus claims the kingship of Bru na Boinne, what is today Newgrange, on Samhain.

Irish Halloween myths and legends - Nera

The Rathcroghan Mound at Cruachan.

This hero from Cruachan undergoes a bravery test set forth by King Ailill. For the king’s own gold-hilted sword, a man must leave Ailill’s hall and go to the gallows where a man was hung and tie a twig around the man’s ankle. Others had tried and given up after spirits harried them.

On Samhain night, Nera completes the task and the man comes alive and asks for a cup of water. After Nera gets him water, he sees the royal buildings burned to the ground and a woman from the fairy mounds tells him its a vision that will come to pass if the people of the court are not warned.

In one version of the myth cited in Patricia Monaghan’s “Encyclopedia of Celtic Mythology and Folklore,” he is captured by the fairies and held in a fairy mound until next Samhain.

Celebrate Magic Day and Halloween With These Ancient Irish Spells and Charms

IrishCentral Staff

24 October, 2018

Learn these Irish spells and charms in time for Halloween

Did you know that October 31 is not just Halloween, but also Magic Day 2018?

Whether you are seeking a spell for love, luck, or healing, emotional charms, or even potency, these charms and spells will have something for you.

Irish love spell

On the night of a full moon, walk to a spot beneath your beloved's bedroom window. Whisper his/her name three times to the night wind (el alder).
The night breeze is believed to have a guardian who is compassionate toward requests from mortals between midnight and 1 am (the witching hour).

Irish spell to find stolen goods

Place two keys in a sieve, crossways. Two people hold the sieve while another makes a cross sign on the forehead of the suspected thief, calling out their name loudly three times. If the person is innocent, the keys will remain stationary. If the person is guilty, the keys will start to revolve slowly around the sieve.

Irish spell to attract good fortune

You will be damn lucky with this one. You will need a candle, some string, and a trinket.
Light the candle and loop the string in through the trinket and tie it. Then start swinging the trinket above the flame and chant:

“A candle flickers, this trinket I pass, good energy and fortune come to me, wealth, knowledge, influence, energy.
"By good means come to me, wealth, knowledge, influence, energy.
"This trinket I pass into power, to attract to me wealth, knowledge, influence, energy, come to me!”

Repeat this three times, then wear the "necklace" around your neck. The more you do this, the more powerful.

Irish beauty spell

This spell makes you prettier than you think – just follow the instructions.
During a full moon, take a mirror and go outside (if you can't then open a window, make sure the moon is reflected on the mirror), take a piece of a picture of your hair, lips, eyes, or whatever you are interested in changing, and place it on the mirror. While concentrating on it, say, "Moonshine, Starlight, let the wind carry your light, let your glow cover my body, and let your shine cover every eye."

Say it three times and concentrate on the part you want to change.

Then say, “Moonshine, Starlight, shape and mold my body, as a rose is granted beauty, let me blossom in your light, the light that brings me beauty, and grant me beauty three times three."

Say it three times and when you are finished light a pink candle or incense.

Irish spell to get someone to call you

Take a piece of parchment or fine quality writing paper and inscribe the name of the target. Write it in a circle twice, so the ends meet. As you do this, concentrate on the person's face and your desire for them to call you. Then, while still concentrating, put a needle through the center of the circle created by the name. Place the charm by the phone.

The call will come within five minutes, five hours or five days depending on how well the spell was cast and how much will power was used.

Irish Hair binding / Bond of trust

In ancient Ireland, it was customary for a man to braid a bracelet from his hair and give it to the woman he loved – a gift of trust – knowing what can be done to someone magically if you possess their hair.

The binding is not activated unless she accepts the gift, thus accepting him and agreeing to the spell. This is not a binding that can be imposed on another person without their knowledge.

Irish healing charm for a wound

Close the wound tightly with the two fingers, and repeat these words slowly:

Dagda, Bridget and Diancecht. The wound was red, the cut was deep, and the flesh was sore; but there will be no more blood, and no more pain, 'till the Gods come down to earth again."

An Irish charm for always having money

Take the feather of a black rooster, go to the crossing points of three fairy-paths, and while holding the feather and a gold colored coin, call the name of the Goddess Áine three times, to bring you everlasting prosperity.

Irish elixir of potency

Two ounces of cochineal, one ounce of gentian root, eight grams of saffron, four grams of snakeroot, four grams of salt of wormwood, and the rind of ten oranges. All of this should be steeped in a quart of brandy and kept for when it is needed.

Irish charm against depression

When a person becomes low, depressed and careless about everything, as if all vital strength and energy has gone, he is said to have got a 'fairy blast,' and blast-water must be poured over him by the hands of a fairy doctor while saying, "In the name of Lugh with his shining sword, who has strength before the gods and stands among them."

Be careful to ensure that no portion of the water is sullied. Whatever is left over after the procedure must be poured onto the fire.

Halloween in Ireland - How to Have a SPOOKY Time.....

Irish Central 31 OCT 2021.

Meet some city ghosts

Glasnevin Cemetery. Photo: Tourism Ireland

As one might expect of a city dating back to the Viking raids of the eighth and ninth centuries, Dublin is considered an exceptionally haunted city. This is why it makes sense to let the experts show you around on one of Dublin’s many excellent walking or bus ghost tours.

One of the most acclaimed is the Gravedigger’s Ghost Bus tour, which takes brave souls on a whirlwind visit to some of the city’s most haunted locales, including Dublin Castle and Christchurch Cathedral, Kilmainham Gaol, Glasnevin Cemetery where over 1 million Dubliners take their final repose, and it’s adjoining Gravedigger’s Pub (a.k.a John Kavanaugh's), where you can enjoy a much-deserved drink.

For those who prefer to feel fear on foot, try the Haunted History Walking Tour of Dublin, which winds through the cobblestoned streets of South Dublin and tells tales of witch burnings, haunted St. Audoen’s church, and demons who once stalked the city streets.

Grace Neill’s Pub

Have a pint in the world’s most haunted pub

Would you dare order a pint at Grace Neill’s Pub in County Down? Built in 1611, the pub was originally known as “The King’s Arms,” but was renamed after Grace Neill, who ran the inn in the town of Donaghadee for many years until her death in 1918 at the age of 98.

But Grace hasn’t let her death interfere with her work at the pub. A ghost of an old woman in Victorian clothing has allegedly been spotted in dark corners of the inn, and her spirit can be seen at the front bar, straightening glasses and furniture and switching lights on and off.

A strange shuffling can apparently be heard coming from the second floor, and some have even felt an invisible “presence” pass through them while standing near the building’s staircase.

Patrons visiting Grace Neill’s, officially one of the oldest pubs on the island of Ireland, have nothing to worry about – the former caretaker of the inn is as friendly as ghosts can be! Grace ran a welcoming establishment while she was alive and continues to do so in her afterlife. Stop by for pints, music, and the craic!
