‘Terminator vibes’: Elon Musk Unveils Teslas' Humanoid Robot

Guardian News 2 Oct 2022

Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, showcased his humanoid robot, Optimus, at the electric vehicle maker's AI Day event.
The billionaire has said a robot business will be worth more than its carmaking business.

At the event a prototype of the robot walked on stage and waved to the audience. And a video of it carrying a box, watering plants and moving metal bars in the Tesla factory was shown.

'Our goal is to make a useful humanoid robot as quickly as possible,' Musk said at the event in Palo Alto, California.

Elon Musk Proceeding With Twitter Takeover

Billionaire Elon Musk is reportedly willing to proceed with his $US44 billion takeover of Twitter.

Twitter has accepted Elon Musk's offer to buy the company for $44 billion

BBC 5 OCT 2022

The deal between the world’s richest person and one of the most talked about social media platforms is on again.

Twitter says it plans to sell the social media platform to Elon Musk for the original offer of $54.20 a share.

“We received the letter from the Musk parties which they have filed with the SEC,” Twitter said in a statement Tuesday. “The intention of the Company is to close the transaction at $54.20 per share.”

Musk made the proposal in a letter to Twitter Monday. Twitter's lawsuit seeking to force Musk to proceed with the deal is set to go to trial in Delaware Chancery Court in two weeks. Musk is scheduled to be deposed in the case on Thursday.

Musk said he would go forward with the deal if the Delaware Chancery Court agrees to “enter an immediate stay,” according to a copy of the letter from Musk’s lawyers that Twitter included in a regulatory filing Tuesday.

Twitter will likely ask the Delaware court to provide protections to make sure Musk follows through on the purchase.

Twitter filed the lawsuit after Musk tried to call off his $44 billion purchase of the company in July.

Twitter shares surged 22% on the news after trading was briefly halted.

Analysts said the offer was an acknowledgment that Musk faced long odds in court. He had lost several legal challenges in court over how much information Twitter had to disclose. But analysts did not rule out more plot twists from Musk.

Twitter under Elon Musk: Will free speech mean more hate speech?

"One thing that seems certain in this saga, where we've witnessed many twists and turns, is that nothing appears predictable,” said Scott Kessler, global sector lead for technology media and telecommunications at Third Bridge.

Elon Musk Under Federal Investigation Over $44bn Twitter Deal

Court filing made public by social media company does not state what is being investigated, nor which federal authorities are involved

Banks stand to lose at least $500m if they fund Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover

The Guardian UK 14 OCT 2022

Court filing made public by social media company does not state what is being investigated, nor which federal authorities are involved

Elon Musk is under a federal investigation related to his $44bn takeover of Twitter, the social media company has said in a court filing made public on Thursday.

While the filing said he was under investigation, it did not say what the focus was, or which federal authorities were investigating.

Twitter, which sued Musk in July to force him to close the deal, said attorneys for the Tesla CEO had claimed “investigative privilege” when refusing to hand over documents it had sought.

In late September, Musk’s attorneys provided a “privilege log” identifying documents to be withheld. The log referenced drafts of a 13 May email to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and a slide presentation to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Twitter said.

“This game of ‘hide the ball’ must end,” the company said in the court filing.

The SEC has previously questioned Musk’s comments about the Twitter acquisition. In April, the SEC asked Musk whether the disclosure of his 9% Twitter stake was late and why it indicated that he intended to be a passive shareholder. Musk later refiled the disclosure to indicate he was an active investor.

In June, the SEC asked Musk in a letter whether he should have amended his public filing to reflect his intention to suspend or abandon the deal.

The SEC and FTC did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Alex Spiro, an attorney for Musk, told Reuters that Twitter’s court filing was a “misdirection … It is Twitter’s executives that are under federal investigation.”

Twitter declined to comment on Spiro’s statement. It also declined to comment, when asked by Reuters, about its understanding of the nature of the investigation into Musk.

The filing comes as the months-long saga of Musk’s proposed Twitter purchase continues, during which the billionaire proposed a takeover, went back on the deal, and then was sued by Twitter to stick to his word.

Musk’s side then said he would go ahead with the deal, days before a trial was set to take place to force the purchase through. Musk is supposed to be securing financing to complete the purchase.

Movies re: TWIT MUSK Fires Board & to Charge $20 (£17) p.m For Blue Tick

Elon Musk Completes $44bn Twitter Takeover

Elon Musk: How The Worlds' Richest Person Bought Twitter

One of the most publicised and frenetic deals in Silicon Valley history has reportedly been completed.

BBC UK 28 OCT 2022

It was a cool evening in late March in San Jose.
A hastily organised meeting had been arranged at an Airbnb to host the world's richest person.

The meeting was a big one for Twitter. Elon Musk had recently become Twitter's largest shareholder. Now there was talk that he wanted to join the company's board.

When Twitter's chairman, Bret Taylor, arrived at the venue it was not quite what he was expecting.

This "wins for the weirdest place I've had a meeting recently", he reportedly texted Mr Musk.

"I think they were looking for an Airbnb near the airport and there are tractors and donkeys," he told him.

However, the meeting went swimmingly.

A few days later it was announced that Mr Musk was to join Twitter's board.

That was only the beginning. The next six months would witness one of the most crazy, on-off deals in Silicon Valley's history.

At the beginning of April, Mr Musk seemed happy with his board position at Twitter, tweeting regularly about how the company might change.

However, private meetings between him and Twitter's CEO Parag Agrawal had not gone well. The two did not see eye to eye on how to fix the platform. Mr Musk got frustrated.

"Fixing Twitter by chatting with Parag won't work," he is said to have texted Mr Taylor. "Drastic action is needed."

Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal and Mr Musk did not see eye to eye

On 14 April, the billionaire publicly stated that he wanted to buy Twitter - lock, stock and barrel.

He offered $44bn (£38bn) for Twitter in a take it or leave it offer. Twitter's board initially rejected the offer, even creating a "poison pill" provision to try to prevent Mr Musk from forcibly buying the company.

Then another change of heart (not the first in this story). Twitter's board decided that, on reflection, they would take the deal and on 25 April, Twitter announced they had accepted the offer.

"Yesssss" Mr Musk tweeted.

Mr Musk argued that Twitter had lost its way. He said Twitter had too often restricted speech and, as the world's "town hall", it needed to place free speech above all else.

He said he did not care about the "economics at all" in an interview at the TED2022 conference in Vancouver, Canada.

That was lucky, because the weeks and months after the deal saw tech stocks fall. Twitter's value also waned. Soon, many analysts began to question whether Mr Musk had overpaid for Twitter.

Publicly, he began to ask a different question - how many real accounts were on Twitter?

The billionaire - ranked by Forbes and Bloomberg as the world's richest person, with a net worth of about $250bn (£216bn) - had for years complained about the number of bots on the platform.

After having his offer accepted, he repeatedly asked Twitter to provide data about how many real users it had.

Twitter executives shared their figure that fewer than 5% of daily active users, based on estimates from randomly sampled accounts, were bots. It appeared to enrage Mr Musk.

After a long Twitter thread from Mr Agrawal, explaining how the company had reached that figure, Mr Musk responded with the poop emoji.

The deal was falling apart. Not entirely unexpectedly, on 8 July, Mr Musk announced he wanted to pull out of the deal.

Was he trying to get a better price for the company or was he genuinely walking away? It was hard to tell.

Twitter was not having any of it. It argued that Mr Musk's agreement to buy the company was legally binding and unpicking the deal now was not an option.

With very expensive lawyers on both sides, a court date was set in Delaware for 17 October to decide whether Mr Musk would be forced to buy the company.

In court documents, Twitter argued it had given him ample information about how many real users it had.

Mr Musk argued Twitter could have many times as many bots than it had publicly claimed, and even accused the company of fraud.

The drip, drip of public criticism was hurting Twitter. The vast majority of Twitter's revenue comes from adverts and advertisers were beginning to wonder how many ads were being shown to real people.

The process was becoming immensely distracting in Twitter HQ too. Some employees relished the idea of Mr Musk becoming their CEO. Many privately - and some publicly - said his purchase would be a disaster for content moderation and the broader goals of the company.

Mr Musk, Twitter, the judge and journalists, were all preparing for what seemed like an inevitable court case when another remarkable twist occurred.

From nowhere, after making all sorts of allegations against Twitter, Mr Musk suddenly announced the deal was back on.

"Buying Twitter is an accelerant to creating X, the everything app," he said.

What had changed his mind? Well perhaps he thought he would lose his court case. A few days before he announced his reversal, he was due to face a deposition by Twitter lawyers. Perhaps he wanted to avoid what would have been a gruelling and likely revealing cross-examination.

Whatever the reason, you can see why Twitter did not pop the champagne corks. Once bitten, twice shy, Twitter reacted, mutedly. Mr Taylor tweeted that the company was "committed to closing the transaction on the price and terms agreed upon with Mr Musk".

Twitter also asked for the court case to be postponed, not cancelled. Mr Musk's lawyers retorted that Twitter "won't take yes for an answer".

Mr Musk had until 17:00 BST on 28 October to come up with the money.

Billions would be stumped up by his rich friends and banks. The rest of it, from Mr Musk, by selling some of his shares in Tesla.

A deal which at times looked intractably, impossibly broken, now appears to have finally been concluded.

Will Donald TRUMP Go Back on to Twitter?

TRUMP was fiercely critical of Twitter when he was banned, supposedly for life.

TRUMP Says 'It wont Survive Without ME'

BBC News 29 OCT 2022.

After the Capitol Hill riots Twitter said the permanent suspension was "due to the risk of further incitement of violence".

Trump even sued Twitter, about what he described as "censorship".

However that "permanent" suspension now looks a lot less certain.

Elon Musk tweeted that he would introduce a "council' that would take a decision on whether Donald Trump would be allowed back.

But if Trump is invited back on to the platform, you might think it would be a no-brainer for him to make a return.

After all, just like Elon Musk, Donald Trump loves Twitter. For Trump it was his way of connecting directly with voters, bypassing the traditional media.

Ironically, it was also a way of getting attention from the media he claimed to shun. "He's tweeted" was a regular refrain across the world's newsrooms.

But times have changed. There are now several reasons why Trump may not come running back to Twitter.

Firstly he now owns and runs his own social media company, known as "Truth Social".

It looks almost exactly like Twitter - and allows people to post "Truths". It's owned by Trump - so he has a direct financial interest in the success of the company.

And by far the biggest asset that Truth Social has is Donald Trump.

Donald Trump won't get paid a cent for tweeting on Twitter. He could benefit hugely if Truth Social becomes a major social media platform though.

At the moment - Truth Social is not that.

According to the app analysis company Sensor Tower, Truth Social had just 92,000 installs last month.

To put that into context, Sensor Tower estimates that Twitter was installed more than 14 million times over that period.

It's anaemic, miniscule growth for a social media company.

But if Truth Social does have a shot at being relevant, Trump needs to be on there - and exclusively so.

It helps to explain why, in a statement from Mr Trump, he didn't say he was thinking about coming back on to Twitter.

Money isn't the only consideration for Mr Trump and his advisers though.

There is also a school of thought that Trump off Twitter is better for his polling.

The theory goes that Twitter served Mr Trump well when he was establishing himself.

But now, does he really need Twitter?

  1. And some Republicans believe the public can have "too much Trump", that wild statements and claims that catch people's attention can distract from Republican talking points.

And even if Mr Trump wanted to come back, it seems it's now possible that the door won't be opened for him.

In a tweet on Friday, Elon Musk said a council would decide whether banned people could return.

This sounds a lot like the Facebook Oversight Board, that made a decision that Trump should be banned from Facebook for two years (they will need to make a decision on whether he can return in January).

It's possible they will conclude Mr Trump's ban should remain.

Mr Trump and Mr Musk are both brilliant users of Twitter. But they are also hard to predict. For all we know, Donald Trump will be happily tweeting away in no time.

But there are plenty of reasons to believe that he won't be back using his favourite megaphone any time soon.

Musk Posts Baseless Conspiracy Theory About Paul Pelosi Attack on Twitter

Post comes days after Musk takes over social media platform amid concern that hate speech will run rampant under his leadership

Elon Musk was criticized on Sunday after posting a baseless conspiracy theory about the assault of Paul Pelosi to Twitter – the social media giant he took over several days ago with a promise to impose less restrictions on its content.

Paul Pelosi, husband of US House speaker Nancy Pelosi, was attacked with a hammer at their California home on Friday. The attacker, identified by authorities as David DePape, allegedly said “Where is Nancy?” during the attack; president Joe Biden said that she appeared to be the intended target.

Musk’s sharing of the conspiracy theory stemmed from a tweet by Hillary Clinton on Saturday. The Democratic former senator shared a Los Angeles Times story about DePape’s apparent far-right leanings.

“The Republican Party and its mouthpieces now regularly spread hate and deranged conspiracy theories,” Clinton said, according to the Los Angeles Times. “It is shocking, but not surprising, that violence is the result. As citizens, we must hold them accountable for their words and the actions that follow.”

Musk responded by tweeting that “there is a tiny possibility there might be more to this story than meets the eye,” and shared a link to a post that presented an unfounded conspiracy theory on the hammer attack, the Times reported. This conspiracy post was in the Santa Monica Observer, which the Times described as being “notorious for publishing false news”.

Dan Moynihan, a public policy professor at Georgetown University, said in the wake of Musk’s tweet: “A big problem in contemporary American politics is that one party has become obsessed with conspiracy theories, encouraging radical responses including anti-democratic actions and violence. Musk will just make the problem worse.”

Musk deleted the response by early Sunday afternoon, according to NBC News. Prior to its deletion, however, it had received in excess of 24,000 retweets and 86,000 likes.

“The latest conspiracy theory about Paul Pelosi’s attack is frankly too disgusting to print,” said NBC News reporter Ben Collins, in response to Musk’s retweet.

The world’s richest man’s apparent sharing of this post comes amid concern that hate-speech and harassment will run rampant under his leadership. Musk has tried to ease concerns about an increase in harmful posts under his ownership, such as his announcement that there would be a new content moderation counsel.

Musk suggested that a better approach would be to divide Twitter into various strands. This approach would see users applying content ratings on their posts, and engaging in online disputes, within a special space on the platform.

Oh Crap! re: TWIT MUSK Fires Board & to Charge $20 (£17) p.m For Blue Tick

Elon Musk Dissolves Twitters' Board of Directors

Elon Musk has dissolved Twitters' board of directors - cementing his control over the social media platform.

Tweetee Musk Says Twitter Blue Tick to Be Revamped & Charge $20 (£17) p.m.

BBC News 1 NOV 2022.

The multi-billionaire will be its chief executive after buying the company last week, ending months of back and forth over the $44bn (£38.3bn) deal. He is now the sole director of Twitter, another filing on Monday showed.

He has moved quickly to put his mark on the firm, which is used by politicians and journalists around the world.

The reforms he is contemplating include changes for how Twitter verifies accounts, as well as job cuts.

The Washington Post has reported that a first round of cuts is under discussion that could affect 25% of the company's staff.

Twitter did not respond to a request for comment from the BBC on the report.

Top executives have already been removed, as Mr Musk brings in high profile allies to the company.

The latest move will mean that he is now chief executive of three companies. Along with taking the top role at Twitter, Mr Musk is chief executive of electric car maker Tesla and rocket company SpaceX.

However, he has indicated that his position at the social media company may be temporary.

'Singular Solution'

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey has rolled his entire stake of 18m shares, worth almost $978m at the buyout price of $54.20, into the new private company, according to a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday.

Mr Dorsey, who left Twitter's board in May, supported Mr Musk's purchase of the firm.

"Elon is the singular solution I trust. I trust his mission to extend the light of consciousness," he said in a tweet after the takeover was approved by the company's former management team.

Meanwhile, technology investor Jason Calacanis who changed his Twitter bio to "chief meme officer", said he was "hanging out at Twitter a bit ... during the transition".

He took to the social media site to solicit opinions on a range of topics from advertising to video.

Mr Calacanis also asked how much people would pay to be verified, amid reports that Twitter could charge people $20 per month to keep the blue ticks that indicate verified accounts.

Later on Tuesday, responding to a Twitter user calling for the platform to purge accounts that had been inactive for more than a year, Mr Musk said "definitely".

Mr Musk, who also leads electric car maker Tesla, changed his profile details on the social media site to "Chief Twit" after the takeover. It has since been updated to "Twitter Complaint Hotline Operator".

The nine ousted directors include former chairman of the board Bret Taylor and former chief executive Parag Agrawal.

Baroness Martha Lane Fox, currently president of the British Chambers of Commerce, who is among the board members to be removed under the merger agreement, declined to comment when approached by the BBC.

'National-Security Issue'

Mr Musk's takeover has drawn widespread scrutiny, as he signals plans to overhaul how Twitter has moderated the spread of information on its platform, including from sources such as state media, politicians and celebrities.

Mr Musk said the company would create a new council to govern those decisions and that no changes would occur yet.

On Monday, Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat, said that he had asked the government to review the national security implications of the deal, given the large stake in the company held by firms tied to Saudi Arabia, which has an increasingly tense relationship with the US.

"We should be concerned that the Saudis, who have a clear interest in repressing political speech and impacting US politics, are now the second-largest owner of a major social media platform," Mr Murphy wrote on Twitter.

"There is a clear national-security issue at stake and CFIUS [the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States] should do a review."

Mr Musk financed his takeover with his own money, a group of other investors and roughly $13bn in debt financing.

Analysts say that the increase in debt is likely to constrain the firm, which has struggled to expand its user base and not turned a profit in years.

Together, Prince Alwaleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and the Kingdom Holding Company are the second largest investor in the newly private company, according to a filing with the US government.

Prince Alwaleed, who was a major Twitter investor prior to the Musk deal, has tweeted the stake aligns with Kingdom Holding Company's "long-term investment strategy".

Musk Says Twitter Blue Tick to Be Revamped

New Twitter owner Elon Musk has said the process of gaining a prestigious "blue tick" will be revised, amid reports the firm could start charging $20 (£17) per month to be verified.

BBC News 1 NOV 2022.

Musk tweeted the verification process was being revamped, days after taking over the social media giant.

A blue tick is currently free and a way of signalling an account is authentic.

Mr Musk completed his $44bn (£37.9bn) takeover on Friday, and has renamed himself as Chief Twit on Twitter.

During months of legal wrangling leading up to the acquisition, the billionaire repeatedly expressed concerns about the verification process, and the number of spam and bot accounts he believes litter the site.

Mr Musk's tweet, on Sunday, did not give any more details about what exactly might change.

But according to tech website The Verge, which cited internal correspondence, Twitter now wants to charge people $19.99 per month to keep their blue tick verification status.

It says the plan involves quadrupling the price for Twitter Blue - the company's subscription service - and making verification one of its features.

Verified users would be given 90 days to subscribe or face losing their blue tick, it reports.

Employees were told of the project on Sunday and have been told they need to launch the scheme by 7 November or risk losing their jobs, it added.

Twitter Blue was launched last summer, and gives subscribers access to various premium features including the option to undo a tweet.

It is currently optional and costs $4.99 per month.

While there has been no official confirmation of the plan, on Monday Mr Musk appeared to acknowledge the speculation in a new tweet which said: "On no, all our diabolical plans have been revealed!!"
Job cut fears

In a separate development, Mr Musk has denied a New York Times report that he plans to lay off Twitter workers before the start of next month to avoid having to make payouts.

It follows his buyout last week which saw the exit of the firm's top bosses - including its chief executive, chairman and finance chief.

At the weekend, The New York Times reported that Mr Musk had ordered major job cuts across Twitter's workforce.

The newspaper said the layoffs would take place before 1 November, when workers were due to receive grants of shares in the company as a major part of their pay deals.

But replying to a Twitter user asking about the report, he said: "This is false."

The takeover has prompted discussion among Twitter users over what the platform will look like under Mr Musk's ownership.

Some have voiced concerns that more lenient free speech policies would mean people banned for hate speech or disinformation may be allowed back to the platform.

Last week Mr Musk said that he doesn't want the platform to become an echo chamber for hate and division. "Twitter obviously cannot become a free-for-all hell-scape, where anything can be said with no consequences!" he tweeted.

However after denying the New York Times job cuts report, Mr Musk tweeted a screen shot of a New York Times headline about him posting a link to a "site known to publish false news".

The New York Times headline referred to a reply Mr Musk had posted, and then deleted, at the weekend to a tweet by former US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

His reply contained a link to a conspiracy theory about an assault on Paul Pelosi, husband of US House speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Mr Musk also started a Twitter poll asking his more than 112m followers whether he should bring back the short-video app Vine.

The service that allowed users to share six-second-long looping clips was bought by Twitter in 2012.

It gained more than 200m active users by the end of 2015 before being shelved by the social media platform.

Musk has previously run polls on whether or not he should sell 10% of his stake in the electric car maker Tesla and if Twitter should have an edit button.

Twitter to Make Job Cuts After Elon Musk Takeover

Twitter says it will inform its staff on Friday about whether they will be laid off following the firm's takeover by Elon Musk. --- Elon Musk says $8 monthly fee for Twitter blue tick

BBC News 4 NOV 2022.

In an internal email, the social media company said the cuts are "an effort to place Twitter on a healthy path".

The firm added that its offices would be temporarily closed and badge access would be suspended.

The multi-billionaire will be Twitter's chief executive after buying the firm last week in a $44bn (£39.3bn) deal.

"We will go through the difficult process of reducing our global workforce on Friday," Twitter said in the email.

"We recognise this will impact a number of individuals who have made valuable contributions to Twitter, but this action is unfortunately necessary to ensure the company's success moving forward," it added.

The company said office access would be immediately limited "to help ensure the safety of each employee as well as Twitter systems and customer data".

All staff are set to receive an email with the subject "Your Role at Twitter" by 09:00 Pacific time (16:00 GMT) on Friday.

Workers who are not affected will be notified through their company email, according to Twitter.

Meanwhile, those who are affected will be told of the "next steps" through their personal accounts.

"Given the nature of our distributed workforce and our desire to inform impacted individuals as quickly as possible, communications for this process will take place via email," Twitter said.

"Exodus of talent"

There is speculation that as many as half of Twitter's 8,000 jobs are on the chopping block.

The platform struggles to make a profit. One way to fix the problem is by making a dent in the wage bill.

Simon Balmain, a senior community manager for Twitter in the UK, told the BBC that he believed he has been laid off, because he was logged out of his work laptop and Slack messaging programme.

"Everyone got an email saying that there was going to be a large reduction in headcount, and then around an hour later, folks started getting their laptops remotely wiped and access to Slack and Gmail revoked," he said.

"Most UK folks are probably asleep and don't know yet. I was working mostly LA (Los Angeles) hours because of the projects I was on, so was still awake when it happened."

Another Twitter worker said he was anxiously waiting for an email to arrive, confirming whether he still had a job.

He said he would probably stay up late to wait for the message.

"The exodus of talent from this layoff will reshape the whole technology industry as we know it. We're all looking out for each other and the outreach of love and support has been incredible to see," Mr Balmain said.

Bloomberg, citing unnamed sources, suggested some senior staff were asked to make lists of employees to be cut on their teams.

Cryptocurrency platform Binance invested in Twitter as part of Mr Musk's takeover. Earlier, Changpeng Zhao, its chief executive, said that "a slimmer workforce would make more sense".

Mr Zhao, who was speaking at the Web Summit in Lisbon, also criticised the platform for having been slow to roll out new features, given its level of staffing.

Pay to verify

The cost-cutting follows criticism of Twitter's efforts to raise money by proposing to charge $8 (£7) a month for a "verified" blue check-mark.

In addition to the verification badge, those who pay could have their tweets promoted more widely and see fewer adverts.

Mr Musk has tweeted of his plan: "We need to pay the bills somehow."

Twitter has not made a profit in several years and its number of users has remained fairly static at about 300 million a month.

Many experts suggest that Mr Musk, the world's richest man, overpaid for the company, given current economic conditions and the depressed values of many tech stocks.

But Brandon Borrman, Twitter's former head of global communications, in a BBC interview, questioned how Twitter could justify asking people to pay in order to remain on an "equal playing field" with other users.

It is not clear how the cuts will affect the platform's operations. Mr Musk has a reputation for being ruthless when it comes to staff.

US media reports already speak of long hours spent by some staff to meet Mr Musk's demands in the aftermath of the takeover.

In May, Mr Musk said his work ethic expectations would be "extreme", but less than he demanded of himself.

Board axed

As part of the takeover agreement, nine members of Twitter's board departed the company, leaving self-styled "Chief Twit" Mr Musk as the sole director.

The move was seen as cementing Mr Musk's control over the company.

Among those leaving were chairman Bret Taylor and chief executive Parag Agrawal.

Other senior figures have also posted about leaving, or are reported to have left, including chief financial officer Ned Segal.

As senior figures left, US media reported that a number of Mr Musk's allies joined Twitter.

Elon Musk Sells Almost $4bn of Tesla Shares

Tesla boss Elon Musk has sold another 19.5 million shares of the electric car maker worth $3.95bn (£3.4bn), filings with the US financial watchdog show.

BBC News 9 NOV 2022

The news comes less than two weeks after the world's richest man completed his $44bn takeover of Twitter.

Tesla's share price has fallen by more than 50% since the start of this year.

Separately, Tesla is recalling just over 40,000 of its vehicles in the US because of a potential problem with their power-steering.

The reason for the latest sales, which took place in the last week, has not yet been disclosed.

The latest sale brings the total value of Tesla shares sold by Mr Musk to almost $20bn since he announced earlier this year that he had bought a stake in Twitter.

He sold $8.5bn of Tesla stock in April this year and around another $7bn worth in August.

Also in August, Tesla shareholders approved a three-for-one stock split, which is behind part of the fall in the value of the shares.

Electric Car Recalls

On Tuesday Tesla recalled just over 40,000 of its cars in the US because of a potential power-steering problem.

The electric car manufacturer said the vehicles' power-steering assist system may fail on rough roads or after hitting a pothole.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it could require greater steering effort, especially at low speeds, increasing crash risks.

Tesla has released a software update to recalibrate the system.

It was unaware of any injuries or deaths in connection with the problem, it said.
Twitter job cuts

Since taking control of Twitter last month Mr Musk has cut around 50% of the company's workforce.

Mr Musk tweeted that he had "no choice" but to slash the company's workforce as the firm is losing more than $4m a day.

He has also blamed "activist groups pressuring advertisers" for a "massive drop in revenue".

The shake-up of the social media platform includes charging users $8 for blue check verification marks.

Exodus Continues at Twitter as Elon Musk Hints at Possible Bankruptcy

Departures of top figures handling safety, security, privacy and compliance come amid warnings from Federal Trade Commission

US Regulator FTC Says it is Concerned About Twitter

BBC News 10 NOV 2022.

As Elon Musk’s ownership of Twitter entered its third week, and following mass layoffs, the billionaire laid bare a delicate financial future for the social media platform, amid an exodus of top privacy and security executives.

Yoel Roth, the head of safety and integrity who had been deputized to publicly address concerns advertisers and users had about the platform, is reportedly the latest to leave the company.

The departures began on the same day Elon Musk addressed employees for the first time, saying that “bankruptcy isn’t out of the question”, according to multiple reports.

The day began with the resignation of three top security officials – chief information security officer Lea Kissner, chief privacy officer Damien Kieran and chief compliance officer Marianne Fogarty – prompting warnings from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

(Twitter reached a settlement over privacy issues with the FTC in May.)

Following those departures, Roth and Twitter’s head of client solutions, Robin Wheeler, also left the company.

An image of Elon Musk amid Twitter symbols.

As Elon Musk’s ownership of Twitter entered its third week, and following mass layoffs, the billionaire laid bare a delicate financial future for the social media platform, amid an exodus of top privacy and security executives.

The day began with the resignation of three top security officials – chief information security officer Lea Kissner, chief privacy officer Damien Kieran and chief compliance officer Marianne Fogarty – prompting warnings from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). (Twitter reached a settlement over privacy issues with the FTC in May.) Following those departures, Roth and Twitter’s head of client solutions, Robin Wheeler, also left the company.

In an email to employees and a subsequent staff meeting, Musk did little to inspire confidence in the company’s future. In one email, Musk described the dire economic circumstances the company was in and how important he believed its subscription service, Twitter Blue, was to its future.

“Without significant subscription revenue, there is a good chance Twitter will not survive the upcoming economic downturn,” Musk said in the email. “We need roughly half of our revenue to be subscription.”

One employee also said at the staff meeting that Musk appeared to downplay employee concerns about how a pared-back Twitter workforce was handling its obligations to maintain privacy and data security standards.

Musk’s memo and staff meeting echoed a livestreamed conversation on Wednesday in which he tried to assuage the concerns of major advertisers and made his most expansive public comments about Twitter’s direction since he closed the $44bn deal to buy the platform late last month and dismissed its top executives.

The departures compound the issues plaguing the social media platform since Musk bought it. Musk’s takeover and the resultant confusing back-and-forth on product launches and content moderation policies have led many brands including General Mills to pause ad buys on Twitter – a development the billionaire attempted to rectify in the live stream for advertisers. The duo leading the live stream, Roth and Wheeler, have now both left the company.

“So the two people Elon brought forward to talk with advertisers in an attempt to convince them to keep partnering with the company just quit,” tweeted Rashad Robinson, the president of Color of Change. “Companies that stay with Twitter at this point will be tied to these dangerous and unhinged policy changes.”

The company’s subscription product Twitter Blue, which launched on Wednesday and allows users to buy a verified blue checkmark for $8, has already resulted in various accounts being verified despite impersonating brands or notable figures. Some civil rights groups worry that a lack of clarity on content moderation policies and the unrestrained ability to buy a blue checkmark could lead – if they haven’t already – to a scourge of hate speech and spread of misinformation. They have called on more brands to pause their advertisements on the platform.

“I have never seen a billionaire begging for your $8 this much,” said Derrick Johnson, the president of the NAACP. “Clearly, our efforts – calling on companies to pause all advertising on Twitter – are working. Corporations need to be held accountable, and Twitter is no exception. Hate speech and disinformation have no place anywhere.”

Under the company’s settlement with the FTC, Twitter is required to perform privacy reviews before it makes any changes to its products. But in a letter posted to Slack by an attorney on the company’s privacy team and reported by the Verge, the author says that they heard the company’s head of legal, Alex Spiro, “say that Elon is willing to take on a huge amount of risk in relation to this company and its users, because ‘Elon puts rockets into space, he’s not afraid of the FTC.’” The company’s legal team is now asking engineers to “self-certify” that their features comply with FTC rules and privacy standards, according to the Verge.

In the letter, the lawyer said people should make use of the available whistleblower protections “if you feel uncomfortable about anything you’re being asked to do”.

Messages seeking comment were left with Twitter, but it is unlikely someone will respond as the communications department has been laid off.

US Regulator FTC Says it is Concerned About Twitter

BBC News 11 NOV 2022.

A US regulator says it is watching events at Twitter with "deep concern" after the platform's top privacy and compliance officers reportedly quit.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said new chief executive Elon Musk was "not above the law".

Separately, Mr Musk reportedly told employees that bankruptcy is not out of the question for Twitter.

The company has been in disarray since Mr Musk started firing thousands of employees last week.

The ability for users to buy verified status as part of a new subscription has raised concerns that Twitter could be swamped with fake accounts.

On Thursday, Yoel Roth, who had been Twitter's head of trust and safety, updated his profile on the social media platform to indicate that he was no longer in the role.

Chief privacy officer Damien Kieran and chief compliance officer Marianne Fogarty resigned according to reports, and the company's chief security officer Lea Kissner also quit.

The departures may increase the risk of Twitter violating regulatory orders. The firm was fined $150m (£119m) in May for selling users' data, and had to agree to new privacy rules.

"We are tracking recent developments at Twitter with deep concern," Douglas Farrar, the FTC's director of public affairs, said.

"No chief executive or company is above the law, and companies must follow our consent decrees."

Mr Farrer said the FTC had "new tools to ensure compliance, and we are prepared to use them".

Twitter paid the fine in May to settle allegations it had illegally used users' data to help sell targeted ads.

In addition to the fine, it had to agree to new rules, and put in place a beefed-up privacy and security programme - overseen by the executives reported to have quit.

Since taking charge, Mr Musk has fired former chief executive Parag Agrawal and other top management, and the company's advertising and marketing chiefs have also left, adding to concerns that Twitter does not have enough people in place to oversee that it remains compliant with regulations.

Money Concerns

In addition, some big advertisers have been spooked by the direction Mr Musk is taking the social media firm.

Twitter makes most of its money through advertising, but some large advertisers have paused spending while they take stock of the changes that Mr Musk is bringing in.

On Thursday, Chipotle Mexican Grill said it had pulled back its paid and owned content on Twitter "while we gain a better understanding on the direction of the platform under its new leadership".

It joined other brands, including car firms General Motors, Volkswagen, and Audi, drugs giant Pfizer, and food manufacturer General Mills, which owns brands including Cheerios and Lucky Charms.

Some brands are said to be concerned that Mr Musk will relax content moderation rules and reverse permanent Twitter bans given to controversial figures, including former US president Donald Trump.

Mr Musk reportedly told employees during a company meeting he was not certain about the future financial performance of the company, and that bankruptcy was not out of the qustion.

Technology website The Verge, which published a full transcript of Mr Musk's address to employees, reported that Twitter no longer had a communications department.

Elon Musk: Twitter Locks Staff Out of Offices Until Next Week

Twitter has told employees that the company's office buildings will be temporarily closed, effective immediately.

Elon Musk Had Previously Told Twitter Staff to Work Long Hours or Leave

BBC News 18 NOV 2022.

In a message seen by the BBC, workers were told that the offices would reopen on Monday 21 November.

It did not give a reason for the move.

The announcement comes amid reports that large numbers of staff were quitting after new owner Elon Musk called on them to sign up for "long hours at high intensity" or leave.

The message went on to say: "Please continue to comply with company policy by refraining from discussing confidential company information on social media, with the press or elsewhere."

Screengrab of message sent to Twitter staff.

This week Mr Musk told Twitter staff that they had to commit to working long hours and would "need to be extremely hardcore" or leave the company, according to reports.

In an email to staff, the firm's new owner said workers should agree to the pledge if they wanted to stay, the Washington Post reported.

Those who did not sign up by Thursday 17 November would be given three months' severance pay, Mr Musk said.

Earlier this month the company said that it was cutting around 50% of its workforce.

Today's announcement that Twitter had temporarily closed its offices came amid signs that large numbers of workers have now also resigned as they have not accepted Mr Musk's new terms.

Employees have been tweeting using the hashtag #LoveWhereYouWorked and a saluting emoji to show they were leaving the firm.

Confused re: TWIT Musk BLOCKED by Apple & Irish Court From Firing Twitter Exec

Elon Musk Summons Twitter Engineers Amid Mass Exodus Resignations and Puts Up Poll on TRUMP Ban

Reports show nearly 1,200 workers left company after demand for ‘long hours at high intensity’, while Musk starts poll on whether to reinstate Donald Trump

BBC News 19 NOV 2022.

Musk emailed Twitter staff on Friday asking that any employees who write software code report to the 10th floor of the office in San Francisco in the early afternoon, according to multiple news reports.

The billionaire said in a follow-up email, “If possible, I would appreciate it if you could fly to SF to be present in person,” adding he would be at the company’s headquarters until midnight and would return Saturday morning, Reuters reported. The engineers should report at 2pm on Friday.

Meanwhile, Musk started a Twitter poll late on Friday asking followers to vote on whether to reinstate former US president Donald Trump’s account on the platform. Early results showed roughly 60% voting yes.

---Could Twitter Collapse or Go Bankrupt?

Musk’s emails came a day after reports indicated between 1,000 and 1,200 Twitter employees decided to quit the beleaguered social media company following a Thursday deadline from Musk that staffers sign up for “long hours at high intensity”, or leave. The New York Times also reported on the email and employee decisions.

In true Twitter fashion, dozens of employees tweeted their resignations with a version of the internal company slogan #lovewhereyouworked. “I may be #exceptional, but gosh darn it, I’m just not #hardcore,” tweeted Andrea Horst, who worked on supply chain and capacity management at Twitter.

The company had told employees it would close its offices and cut badge access until Monday, Reuters reported, citing two unnamed sources, and it was not immediately known whether the headquarters had reopened.

Musk ordered employees to email him a summary of what their software code had “achieved” in the past six months, “along with up to 10 screenshots of the most salient lines of code”.

“There will be short, technical interviews that allow me to better understand the Twitter tech stack,” Musk wrote in one of the emails.

Musk said this week that some Tesla engineers were assisting in evaluating Twitter’s engineering teams, but he said it was on a “voluntary basis” and “after hours”.

The loss of employees in critical engineering roles comes just days before the World Cup, when the service typically expects a surge in traffic. The high-traffic event could be an important test for the new Twitter 2.0, as Musk referred to it, and how the company expects to run with a pared-down workforce.

Musk said he would try to speak with remote employees by video, and that only people who could not physically get to the company’s headquarters or had a family emergency would be excused.

In his first email to Twitter employees this month, Musk said: “We are also changing Twitter policy such that remote work is no longer allowed, unless you have a specific exception.

“Managers will send the exceptions lists to me for review and approval.”

The remote work policy prompted a proposed class action lawsuit filed by Dmitry Borodaenko, a Twitter employee who said he was fired for not reporting to the office. Borodaenko, who has a disability that makes him vulnerable to Covid-19, alleges the remote-work policy as well as the requirement to work long, intense hours violate the Americans with Disabilities Act, according to the complaint.

Users urged to archive tweets amid rumors of Twitter implosion

Musk’s first three weeks as Twitter’s owner have been marked by rapid change and chaos. He quickly fired Twitter’s previous CEO and other senior leaders and then laid off half its staff earlier this month.

Posting his poll on whether to reinstate Trump to the platform, Musk tweeted “Vox Populi, Vox Dei”, using a Latin phrase that roughly means “the voice of the people is the voice of God”. The poll was open for 24 hours.

Musk said in May he would reverse Twitter’s ban on Trump, whose account was suspended after last year’s attack on the US Capitol.

Musk said earlier on Friday that a decision to bring back Trump’s account was yet to be made, and that Twitter had reinstated some accounts that had been banned or suspended, including satirical website Babylon Bee – and the comedian Kathy Griffin who was suspended after changing her name on Twitter to Elon Musk.

Musk’s decision to ask Twitter users for guidance on who should be on the platform is part of a huge restructuring of the company, including the massive layoffs.

Yoel Roth, the former head of trust and safety who was tapped to assuage concerns advertisers had with the platform, said in a New York Times op-ed that he had chosen to resign last week because it was clear Musk would be unilaterally calling the shots. “A Twitter whose policies are defined by unilateral edict has little need for a trust and safety function dedicated to its principled development,” Roth wrote.

Musk wrote on Twitter late on Thursday that he was not worried about resignations as “the best people are staying”.

“So where will Twitter go from here?” Roth wrote. “Some of the company’s decisions in the weeks and months to come, like the near certainty of allowing Donald Trump’s account back on the service, will have an immediate, perceptible impact.

But to truly understand the shape of Twitter going forward, I’d encourage looking not just at the choices the company makes but at how Mr Musk makes them.”

Thumbs down re: TWIT Musk BLOCKED by Apple & Irish Court From Firing Twitter Exec

TWIT Musk Puts TRUMP BACK on Twitter

Elon Musk Lifts TRUMPs' BAN Amid Mass Resignations

BBC News 20 NOV 2022.

Elon Musk said Saturday he will reinstate Donald Trumps’ account on Twitter, reversing a ban that has kept the former president off the social media site since a pro-Trump mob attacked the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, as Congress was poised to certify Joe Biden’s election victory.

Musk made the announcement in the evening on Saturday after holding a poll that asked Twitter users to click “yes” or “no” on whether Trump’s account should be restored. The “yes” vote won, with 51.2%.

NB;
I suspected THAT was the REAL reason Musk wanted to buy Twitter ...NOW they have a platform to pump up their SMARMY egos even MORE.. Twitter STAFF didnt agree with TRUMPs' reinstation....
Such a sad loss of incredibly talented people...

Elon Musk Blocked From Firing Twitter Exec by Irelands' High Court

Irelands' High Court has granted an injunction to Sinead McSweeney stopping Twitter CEO Elon Musk from terminating her employment.

BBC 28 NOV 2022

Sinead McSweeney, Twitter's Global Vice President for Public Policy, has been granted an injunction from Ireland's High Court blocking the company's new CEO Elon Mush from firing her.

The newly granted injunction against Twitter CEO Elon Musk handed down by Ireland's High Court blocks him temporarily from firing Sinead McSweeney, Twitter's Global Vice President for Public Policy. The reprieve has been granted to allow the courts to consider if Twitter had properly terminated her.

McSweeny argued that she was provided with "mixed messages" from Twitter. She also claims that she never accepted her severance package. She also claims that she was locked out of Twitter's Dublin offices and can not access the company's employee network.

The Dublin employee's case has been brought after the billionaire CEO of Twitter, Elon Musk, fired thousands of employees across the world. Roughly two-thirds of Twitter's 7,500 employees were let go.

Musk said last week that the mass firings were over and said that the company would begin to hire again.

McSweeney claims that Musk has been running the company since his takeover "with no apparent logic". She told the court that she had a phone conversation with Mush on Nov 13, Courts News Ireland reports.

She claims he told her that despite the cuts being made any "excellent" staff who had been let go would be reinstated. He added that the criteria for re-instatement was “that the individual was excellent, performing a critical role” and “not negative”.

“He accepted that people could be talented but might impact the team negatively and he stated that he did not want a***oles."

At an "all-hands" company-wide meeting Musk said his leadership was "moderate" not "right-wing"

According to the Verge he said "If we want to move the headquarters to Texas I think it would play into the idea that Twitter has gone from being left-wing to right-wing, which is not the case.

"This is not a right-wing takeover of Twitter. It is a moderate-wing takeover of Twitter."

"To be the digital town square, we must represent people with a wide array of views even if we disagree with those views," he continued.

Musk said the company should focus more on Twitter's influence overseas, particularly in Japan.

"It may seem as though Twitter is U.S.-centric but if anything it’s Japan-centric," he said, according to the Verge.

"There are roughly the same number of daily active users in Japan as there are in the U.S., despite the fact that Japan has one-third of the population of the U.S."

Musk Feuds With Apple Over Twitter Advertising

Elon Musk has said Apple has halted most of its advertising on Twitter and accused the company of threatening to remove the platform from its app store.

BBC 29 NOV 2022

ooooo I look sooo tweet dont I?...

The feud comes as many companies have halted spending on Twitter amid concerns about Mr Musk's content moderation plans for the site.

Apple has not responded to requests for comment from the BBC.

Mr Musk has said Twitter has seen a "massive" drop in revenue, blaming activists for pressuring advertisers.

In a series of Tweets on Monday, he accused Apple of "censorship" and criticised its policies, including the charge it levies on purchases made on its app store.

"Apple has mostly stopped advertising on Twitter. Do they hate free speech in America?" he said.=

He appealed directly to Apple's CEO - asking: "What's going on here @tim_cook?"

The owner of the social media platform also claimed Apple had threatened to withhold Twitter from its app store, but did not say why.=

Mr Musk, who purchased Twitter for $44bn last month, is under pressure as some companies halt spending.

He has said he hopes to make money by turning Twitter verification into a paid subscription service, but currently the vast majority of the site's revenue comes from advertising.

The Washington Post reported Apple was the top advertiser on Twitter, spending $48m on ads on the social network in the first quarter of 2022.

Companies including Cheerios maker General Mills and Volkswagen are among the firms that have halted their spending in recent weeks.

Media Matters, a watchdog site, reported last week that half of Twitter's top advertisers had pulled their advertising on Twitter after concerns about the direction of Twitter.

Apple's media agency Omnicom recommended the Silicon Valley giant pause advertising on the platform out of concern for Apple's "brand safety", according to US tech site The Verge.

Elon Musk Squares Up to Apple

Analysis by James Clayton, North America technology reporter

Elon Musk has worked out who really holds the power over social media companies.

The billionaire famously doesn't like being told what to do. And yet Apple holds all the cards when it comes to Twitter.

Firstly, as others have found out, only Apple decides who's allowed on the App Store. If Apple wanted to, it could stop Twitter from being downloaded on iPhones around the world - which would be a devastating blow for Twitter.

Not only that but Apple can also charge what it likes for the privilege of being on the App Store. For companies like Twitter, it can charge anywhere from 15-30% for in-app purchases.

That charge has been challenged in the US courts by Fortnite producer Epic Games. In 2021, the company sued over Apple's commission for access to their "walled garden", as the App Store is referred to in the case.

Lastly, Apple has the power to stop advertising on Twitter - an important source of revenue for the company.

Mr Musk isn't the first to flag this power imbalance. Meta has for years complained about the dominance Apple holds over its Instagram and Facebook apps.

But in Mr Musk, Apple now has another powerful and very rich adversary.

In picking a fight with Apple, Mr Musk is wading into a wider debate over the clout that Apple wields over online activity via its app store, which is the way that iPhone owners download games and other apps.

As it stands, Apple could take up to 30% of the money from the monthly fee Twitter plans to charge some users.

On Twitter, Mr Musk posted a meme saying "pay 30%. Go To War" with an arrow pointing to the latter.

All companies listed in the app store have to abide by Apple's rules and pay its fees, or face removal or suspension.

Last year Apple suspended social media platform Parler from the store, saying it didn't do enough to remove hate speech.

Apple later restored Parler after the company updated its policies.

Fired Twitter Cleaning Staff Treated Like Garbage

Cleaners at Twitter's headquarters in San Francisco have told the BBC they were sacked without severance pay.

BBC News 9 DEC 2022.

One of them told the BBC a member of Elon Musk's team had said their jobs would be replaced by robots.

Juana Laura Chavero Ramirez says she might not be able to afford her diabetic medication

A California state senator said Mr Musk was treating the former staff "like garbage".

San Francisco's city attorney, David Chiu, said he's investigating if Mr Musk broke the law. Twitter has not responded to a BBC request for comment.

"Elon Musk has had a long history of flouting labour laws," Mr Chiu told the BBC.

"While I'm not surprised this happened, I feel for these workers. We will be looking into this further."

The BBC spoke to four cleaners who say they were fired from Twitter on Monday - their interviews were conducted in Spanish.

Adrianna Villarreal, who worked for Twitter for four years, said she's now worried she won't have enough money to feed her family over Christmas.

"It's a sad and frustrating thing for our families and children," she said.

The cleaners were working at Twitter last week until they were told their jobs were under threat.

Olga Miranda, president of the cleaners' union, said they organised a strike on Monday to protest. The cleaners were then told they had been laid off effective immediately, she says.

"They did this three weeks before Christmas," she said. "I think we were fired because we're a union."

Adrianna Villarreal says she's worried about how to buy Christmas gifts for her children

Julio Alvarado had been a cleaner for 10 years at Twitter. He says the environment was always friendly during his time there.

But he says things changed when Elon Musk took over Twitter in October.

"People worked without worries," he told the BBC. "Now we are afraid."

Since Mr Musk acquired the company, Mr Alvarado says he was escorted by private security while cleaning parts of the office.

He also says he was told by someone from Mr Musk's team that his job would be obsolete soon anyway because robots would eventually replace human cleaners.

Without his job, Mr Alvarado says he's worried about paying his bills. He also says he's supporting his family back in Mexico.

"I can only tell you, I don't have money to pay the rent," he says. "I'm not going to have medical insurance. I don't know what I'm going to do."

Juana Laura Chavero Ramirez said she had worked for five years at Twitter. A diabetic, she's concerned she won't be able to get her medication.

"It's just horrible," she said. "We're not only losing our job, we're losing our income."

Adrianna Villarreal, who had worked at Twitter since 2018, said she was worried she would not be able to afford Christmas gifts.

"We are supposed to have Christmas presents for our children," she said, "a plate of food on our table and overnight we don't have anything."

The cleaners say they do not know what to do - as there are few available cleaning vacancies in San Francisco at the moment.

A small group of cleaners have protested outside San Francisco's Twitter headquarters since Monday.

California state senator Scott Wiener told the BBC the cleaners had been treated "horribly".

"In the short term, I'd like to see him [Elon Musk] treat his janitors like human beings," said Mr Wiener, "and get them back working - not just throw them out right before Christmas."

Movies re: Musk Rebrands Twitter to X & Blue Bird Logo Killed Off

Twitter Files Spark Debate About SECRET Blacklisting

What makes one social media post pop up all over people's feeds and another disappear into obscurity? It's a question anyone trying to make a splash online would love the answer to.

BBC 14 DEC 2022.

We know that tweets don't just appear in chronological order - your feed is being engineered in some way. And platforms tend to keep the full details of their algorithm - the code that determines which posts you see in what order - under their hats.

Under an initiative by Twitter's new chief Elon Musk, fragments of internal Twitter discussions about content moderation - dubbed "the Twitter Files" - have been shared on the platform by a few selected journalists.

The ongoing revelations contain internal chats of Twitter's inner circle of senior executives about a series of controversial decisions: limiting the dissemination of the Hunter Biden laptop story, the permanent suspension of Donald Trump in the wake of the 6 January 2021 Capitol riot, and limiting the reach of some influential accounts.

Part two of the revelations, shared by US journalist Bari Weiss, who had been provided with screenshots by Twitter's new head of safety Ella Irwin, reveals three influential conservative accounts in the US were put on different "blacklists", meaning their tweets either wouldn't trend, might not appear in search, or would not be "amplified".

Ms Weiss said decisions were made "all in secret, without informing users". Mr Musk went even further, saying the revelations proved "the rules were enforced against the right, but not against the left".

But it's incredibly hard to verify whether this is giving us the whole picture.

We are missing the context of which other accounts have faced similar treatment, and whether the restricted accounts were in breach of other rules, for example inciting hate or spreading false claims about Covid that could cause harm.

Restricting accounts can be a useful tool if they are spreading harmful material. A common phrase when we talk about regulating the internet is "freedom of speech not freedom of reach" - it's one Mr Musk himself has used to describe the platform's new approach.

Twitter, for instance, confirmed just a few days ago that it would not "amplify tweets containing slurs or hate speech".

The idea of an account being placed on "trends blacklists" doesn't seem totally out of step with this policy. The more controversial part comes from who gets to decide what can and can't trend, where the threshold for a restriction lies and who ends up on the list.

One name on the Twitter files list that has drawn attention is Dr Jay Bhattacharya - a health policy professor at Stanford University - who vocally opposed coronavirus lockdowns, and whose tweets were reportedly prevented from trending.

He has been criticised, including by a judge in a US case about mask mandates in schools, who accused him of oversimplifying research studies, and by other scientists for proposing an alternative to lockdowns they said was unworkable and would lead to more deaths.

But he has said science required people to disagree with each other, arguing against "censorship of scientific discussion".

There have been various reports suggesting marginalised groups including trans and plus size people were more likely to have their accounts restricted.

Multiple liberal and left-leaning individuals have also previously complained about their accounts and tweets being "suppressed".

The difficulty is, people will have a hunch they are being restricted- the engagement with their posts suddenly falls or their followers report not seeing them anymore - but that could be down to many other reasons, and it's incredibly hard to prove that's what is happening without access to the companies' internal workings.

Alex Stamos, director of the Stanford Internet Observatory and a former Facebook chief security officer, says Mr Musk is "providing extremely limited transparency" to like-minded US media figures. He proposed that Mr Musk should make available details of all communications around content moderation with governments, political parties and politicians around the world.

Mr Musk says he intends to introduce a new feature that will enable all users to see "your true account status", including whether they've been "shadowbanned" (hidden from other people's feeds), the reason for it, and a process to appeal.

Twitter isn't the only company moving in this direction- Instagram recently launched a new tool of its own to let you know if your posts are barred from being recommended to other users.

While these changes add some degree of transparency to the process, content moderation decisions are incredibly difficult and messy, and remain open to political influence from owners, senior executives and pressure from politicians and activists.

Analysis

By Marianna Spring, Disinformation Correspondent

At its heart, this is a row over whether social media companies like Twitter should control what we're exposed to on their sites - and how transparent they are about how they do that.

The 'Twitter Files' are challenging how the company made decisions about enforcing certain policies - and dealing with certain accounts.

But, former employees I've spoken to are quick to point out that much of what they tell us is not new and that ultimately, how you interpret these 'Twitter Files' depends on where you stand on how social media sites should deal with misinformation and hate.

We already know about Twitter's policies to tackle both of these issues, some of which involved suspending accounts as well as removing content.

Twitter's curation teams, axed since Musk bought Twitter, were in charge of deciding which content could trend and what would be de-prioritised, including on issues like misinformation and discriminatory hate.

After the pandemic, the riots at the Capitol in the US and the war in Ukraine, Twitter came under huge pressure to do more about these issues.

What's new about the Twitter Files is detail on who was making the decisions - and specific accounts that have been targeted.

Revealing internal conversations has sparked hate and backlash online directed at those caught up in this. And there are still unanswered questions about how other accounts have been affected, not just the select few listed.

Elon Musk Taking Legal Action Over Twitter Account That Tracks His Private Jet

Elon Musk says he is taking legal action against the holder of a Twitter account that tracks his private jet, arguing it put his son at risk.

BBC News 15 DEC 2022.

The @ElonJet account, which has more than half a million followers, was suspended on Wednesday.

Its owner Jack Sweeney, 20, used publicly available flight-tracking information to tweet every time Mr Musk's jet took off and landed.

Mr Musk says legal action is now being taken against Mr Sweeney and others.

"Last night, car carrying [his son] lil X in LA was followed by crazy stalker (thinking it was me), who later blocked car from moving and climbed onto hood," he tweeted.

He added that any account revealing people's real-time locations will be suspended "as it is a physical safety violation".

--Elon Musk sells $3.6bn of Tesla shares
--Elon Musk no longer world's richest man

Mr Sweeney denied the incident was related to his account when asked by the BBC.

It comes after he confirmed on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday that the profile had been suspended.

That evening, Mr Sweeney's account appeared to have been reactivated. He tweeted: "Yes I am back!" Minutes later it was listed again as suspended. His personal account, @JxckSweeney, has also been frozen.

Mr Sweeney, a college student in the state of Florida, shared a screenshot with CNN of a message from Twitter saying the social media company had conducted a "careful review" and had decided to permanently ban the account for violating Twitter's rules.

The student is in charge of dozens of other accounts that track the private flights of wealthy Americans, including Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg.

Many of those accounts - including one tracking aircraft associated with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and another monitoring celebrity jets - appeared to be suspended on Twitter as well on Wednesday afternoon.

Mr Musk had long taken issue with the @ElonJet account, and once reportedly offered Mr Sweeney $5,000 to delete it.

Mr Sweeney told US media outlets that Mr Musk ultimately told him it did not feel right to pay to have the account shut down.

And a month ago, Mr Musk pledged to keep it running even though it was a "direct personal safety risk".

But Mr Musk tweeted on Wednesday evening: "Any account doxxing real-time location info of anyone will be suspended, as it is a physical safety violation. This includes posting links to sites with real-time location info."

Twitter's Help Center has tweeted an updated media policy that begins: "You may not publish or post other people's private information without their express authorization and permission."

Since taking the helm at Twitter, Mr Musk has made a host of changes to its moderation practices.

He has restored a handful of previously banned accounts, including former President Donald Trump's profile, which was banned following the 6 January insurrection at the US Capitol.

The Tesla CEO has also slashed the social media company's staff and has reportedly stopped paying rent for some of Twitter's offices, including the company's San Francisco headquarters, according to the New York Times.

Investors have questioned whether his recent takeover of Twitter has diverted his attention from his electric car business.

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, he sold another 22 million shares, worth $3.58bn (£2.9bn), in the company.

It brings the total of Tesla stocks sold by Mr Musk over the past year to almost $40bn.

Twitter Condemned by UN and EU Over BANNED Reporters

The United Nations has joined the European Union in condemning Twitter's decision to suspend some journalists who cover the social media firm.

BBC News 17 DEC 2022.

Reporters for the New York Times, CNN and the Washington Post were among those locked out of their accounts.

The UN tweeted that media freedom is "not a toy" while the EU has threatened Twitter with sanctions.

A Twitter spokesman told a US tech news website the bans were related to the live sharing of location data.

Melissa Fleming, the UN's under secretary general for global communications, said she was "deeply disturbed" by reports that journalists were being "arbitrarily" suspended from Twitter.

"Media freedom is not a toy," she said. "A free press is the cornerstone of democratic societies and a key tool in the fight against harmful disinformation."

Earlier on Friday, EU commissioner Vera Jourova threatened Twitter with sanctions under Europe's new Digital Services Act which she said requires "the respect of media freedom and fundament rights".

"Elon Musk should be aware of that. There are red lines. And sanctions, soon," she added.

Mr Musk has not commented directly on the suspensions, but said in a tweet that "criticising me all day long is totally fine, but doxxing my real-time location and endangering my family is not".

The technology tycoon later set up a poll asking whether he should unsuspend the accounts "now" or "in seven days", suggesting the decision could be reversed sooner rather than later.

"Same doxxing rules apply to 'journalists' as to everyone else," he added, using a term to describe the release of private information online about individuals.

A spokesman for the New York Times called the suspensions "questionable and unfortunate".

Twitter blocked users from sharing links to rival

The suspensions come after Mr Musk vowed to sue the owner of a profile that tracks his private jet.

He said a "crazy stalker" had used live location sharing to find and accost a vehicle carrying his children in Los Angeles.

But following the suspensions, the German Foreign Office warned Twitter that "press freedom cannot be switched on and off on a whim".

'A Town Square'

Mr Musk took control of Twitter in October in a $44bn ($36bn) deal.

When he completed his takeover, the billionaire told advertisers he bought the site because he wanted to "try to help humanity", and for "civilisation to have a digital town square".

He has made a host of changes to its moderation practices. The moves have alarmed some civil rights groups, who have accused the billionaire of taking steps that will increase hate speech, misinformation and abuse.

Any sanctions placed on Mr Musk's business over the account suspensions could be applied under the bloc's new Digital Services Act, which was approved by the EU earlier this year.

Under the terms of the proposed new law, the EU Commission will be allowed to impose fines of up to 6% of the global turnover of a firm that it finds breaks its rules.

In extreme cases, the EU could ask a court to suspend a rogue service, but only if it is "refusing to comply with important obligations and thereby endangering people's life and safety".

Matt Binder, a journalist for Mashable and one of those suspended, said he didn't know why he had been banned.

"I've been very critical of Musk in my reporting," he told the BBC. But he said that Mr Musk's claim "that everyone that got suspended was doxxing him - due to the jet tracker" was not true.
Media caption,

Journalist Matt Binder tells the BBC he's baffled by Twitter's decision to suspend his account.

He said he had never tweeted a hyperlink to the tracker, but had mentioned the account after it had been suspended.

"Clearly the people who were suspended were handpicked, because there are literally hundreds of accounts per minute who tweeted the link."

Mr Binder, who has been on Twitter since 2008 and has been reporting on the developments at the social media site, said he was surprised at the ban on journalists.

"I knew it was a possibility but really thought he wouldn't because it would entirely wreck the facade of being a free speech platform."

On Friday, it emerged that NBC News executives had made the decision to pull their disinformation reporter, Ben Collins, from broadcasts due to his tweets earlier this month that were critical of Mr Musk.

Mr Musk later spoke to journalists on Twitter Spaces, part of the social media app that allows live audio conversations, but after answering a few questions about the ban he left and Twitter Spaces itself has since appeared to be suspended.

Twitter also suspended the official account of Mastodon, which has emerged as an alternative to Twitter since Mr Musk's takeover.

Links to individual Mastodon accounts also appeared to be banned. An error message notified users that links to Mastodon had been "identified" as "potentially harmful" by Twitter or its partners.

Elon Musk: Twitter Users Vote in Favour of Boss Resigning

Twitter users have voted in favour of Elon Musk stepping down as the platform's chief executive after the billionaire ran a poll on his future.

BBC News 20 DEC 2022.

A total of 57.5% voted "yes" after Mr Musk asked his 122 million followers whether he should stand down.

Mr Musk, who bought Twitter for $44bn (£36bn), said before the poll closed that he would abide by the result.

The technology tycoon, who also runs Tesla and Space X, has faced much criticism since taking over the site.

Mr Musk is yet to comment since the poll closed. Even if he were to resign as chief executive, he would remain as Twitter's owner.

More than 17.5 million users voted in his poll on Monday, with 42.5% voting no to Mr Musk stepping down.

In the past Mr Musk has obeyed Twitter polls. He's fond of quoting the phrase "vox populi, vox dei", a Latin phrase which roughly means "the voice of the people is the voice of God".

A former Twitter member of staff, who left the company recently, told the BBC that Mr Musk was "showing himself to be the incompetent fool we all knew he was".

Speaking on condition of anonymity, they added: "His investors are surely looking at this now and questioning whether he was the right horse to back.

"I imagine he's getting pressure from investors to step down and is using this poll to make it look like he's following the will of the people instead of the will of those paying his bills."

Minutes before the poll closed, the founder of crypto exchange Binance replied to Mr Musk saying he should "stay the course" and not step down.

Changpeng Zhao is thought to be one of several Twitter investors and said in May he had backed Mr Musk taking over by making a $500m investment.

Among the backers are massive firms such as Fidelity, which is known for managing retirement accounts, and Sequoia Capital, which has backed other technology firms Apple, Google and Airbnb.

Others are thought to be Oracle co-founder and Mr Musk's friend, Larry Ellison, sovereign wealth fund Qatar Holding, and Saudi Arabia's Prince Alwaleed bin Talal.
Mr Musk's private jet appears to be on its way back from the World Cup in Qatar, where he was pictured at the final next to Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner on Sunday.

Jared Kushner and Elon Musk

Dan Ives, senior equity analyst at Wedbush Securities, told the BBC before the poll closed that he believed the vote would ultimately lead to the ending of Mr Musk's reign as Twitter chief executive, and that he would probably name a new temporary CEO "in the next 24 hours".

There has been a flurry of controversial changes at Twitter since Mr Musk bought the social media site.

He has fired about half of its staff and attempted a rollout of Twitter's paid-for verification feature before putting it on pause. The feature was relaunched last week.

Hacker re: Musk Rebrands Twitter to X & Blue Bird Logo Killed Off

Twitter in Data-Protection Probe After '400 Million User Details For Sale

A watchdog is to investigate Twitter after a hacker claimed to have private details linked to more than 400 million accounts.

BBC News 3 JAN 2023

The hacker, "Ryushi", is demanding $200,000 (£166,000) to hand over the data - reported to include that of some celebrities - and delete it.

Ireland's Data Protection Commission (DPC) says it "will examine Twitter's compliance with data-protection law in relation to that security issue".

Twitter has not commented on the claim.

The data is said to include phone numbers and emails, including those belonging to celebrities and politicians, but the purported size of the haul is not confirmed. Only a small "sample" has so far been made public.

The Guardian reported that data of US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was included in the sample of data published by the hacker. The data of broadcaster Piers Morgan, who recently had his Twitter account hacked, is also reported to be included.

Twitter has so far not responded to press inquiries about the claimed breach.

Chief executive Elon Musk did not reply to a tweeted request for comment from leading cyber-security reporter Brian Krebs - though the breach, as Mr Krebs notes, probably occurred before the Tesla boss took over.

Cyber-crime intelligence company Hudson Rock says it was the first to raise the alarm about the data sale.

While acknowledging the amount of data taken had not been verified, the firm's chief technology officer, Alon Gal, told the BBC a number of clues appeared to support the hacker's claim.

The data did not appear to have been copied from an earlier breach in which details were published from 5.4 million Twitter accounts, Mr Gal said.

Only 60 emails out of the sample of 1,000 provided by the hacker in the earlier incident appeared, "so we are confident that this breach is different and significantly bigger", he said.

Also, Mr Gal noted: "The hacker aims to sell the database through an escrow service that is offered on a cyber-crime forum. Typically this is only done for real offerings."

An escrow service is a third party that agrees to release funds only when certain conditions (such as handing over data) are met.

Multimillion-Dollar Question

"Ryushi" has said that it exploited a problem with a system that lets computer programmes connect with Twitter to compile the data.

Twitter fixed the weakness in the system in 2022. But the flaw is also believed to have been used in the earlier breach affecting more than five million accounts.

The DPC announced it was investigating that earlier breach on 23 December.

As Twitter's European headquarters are based in Dublin, the commission is the lead authority supervising its compliance with EU data-protection rules.

In a statement sent to the BBC about the latest incident, the DPC noted its continuing investigation into the earlier Twitter breach but added: "Reports have claimed that some additional datasets have now been offered for sale on the dark web.

"The DPC has engaged with Twitter in this inquiry and will examine Twitter's compliance with data-protection law in relation to that security issue."

The hacker is aware of how damaging the loss of data can be for platforms.

In the online post offering to sell the data, it warns Twitter that its best chance of avoiding a large data-protection fine is to buy back the data "exclusively".

In November, Meta was hit with a 265m-euro ($276m) fine by the DPC after data scraped from more than 533 million Facebook users was leaked online.

The UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) told the BBC that it was aware of "media reports" regarding Twitter user's personal information being made available on the internet.

"We are engaged in dialogue with Twitter's data protection officer and will be making enquiries on this matter," it said.

It added that it would co-operate with the Data Protection Commission of Ireland.

Elon Musk Accused of Defrauding Tesla Investors Over Privatization Tweet

Teslas' Elon Musk Mislead Investors SEC alleges

Musk was sued by Twitter over takeover deal...Elon Musk sold $6.9bn of Tesla shares as Twitter lawsuit loomed

BBC 18 JAN 2023

Musk Jury Chosen for Tesla Investor Fraud Trial Over 2018 Tweets. Jurors call him narcissistic, smart

The judge presiding over the case set opening arguments for Wednesday in San Francisco federal court and told jurors the trial may run until Feb. 3.

There was no shortage of criticism of Musk among prospective jurors who were screened for the case. Musk is “off his rocker,” said one. “He’s talented but crazy,” said another. A third described Musk as “arrogant and unpredictable.”

Some of the comments were from written questionnaires potential jurors filled out before coming to court Tuesday. Others were uttered in live court, as follow-up responses to questions posed by Musk’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, lawyers representing investors in the lawsuit, and US District Judge Edward Chen.

One woman who made it to a final round of 15 before being cut was asked by the judge about her description of the billionaire entrepreneur in the questionnaire as “not a very likeable person,” although she said Tesla’s cars are nice-looking.

Musk is “a bit arrogant and narcissistic” in how he comes off in interviews, the woman said in court. She said she works down the street from Twitter Inc.’s headquarters and her opinion about him mostly stems from how he’s managed the social media company, which he bought in October for $44 billion. Even so, she said, she could fairly judge someone she finds unlikeable.

“Sometimes I don’t like my husband,” she told the court. In the end, she was dismissed.

One man who said on his questionnaire that Musk has “embarrassed himself in engineering circles” was asked by the judge to explain whether, given his comments, he could be fair. He replied that he wasn’t sure how much detail he should go into because, “with Musk, the rabbit hole goes pretty deep.”

“I don’t think it’d be fair to Mr. Musk to have me on the jury,” the man concluded. “There’s also the billionaire factor — I’m not a big fan of those, either.” He was excused.

Elon Musk Defiantly Defends Himself in Tesla Tweet Trial Insisting He Could Have Pulled The Deal Off

Elon Musk shows in ‘funding secured’ trial that he does not live in the real world

BBC 25 JAN 2023

Elon Musk leaves the federal building and courthouse in San Francisco on Tuesday.

Tesla CEO claims to be the champion of Investors while being sued by them, says he thought taking Tesla private would be like buying a house, and insists he should still be trusted — will a jury still believe him?

San Francisco has been home in recent days to an upside-down world of contrasts where one of the world’s richest men, Elon Musk, enters a federal courtroom with four security staff in tow to portray himself as an advocate for the average retail investor who has never lost money for his investors.

The Tesla Inc. TSLA, +0.10% chief executive is in San Francisco to defend himself against a shareholder lawsuit stemming from his 2018 “funding secured” tweet, when he claimed to have a go-private deal for the electric-vehicle maker that was far from actually secured. In his three court appearances — a brief 30 minutes on Friday, several hours on Monday and a little over three hours on Tuesday — Musk has managed to spout a number of exaggerations, stretching the truth under oath on how he thinks the world of high finance works, all while stating that he was trying to save Tesla from the short-seller sharks of Wall Street.

The billionaire CEO played to the “Wall Street is swimming with sharks” mentality of small, individual investors, as he described his disdain for the short sellers in Tesla’s stock. When asked about his desire to take the EV company private, Musk mentioned short sellers as being one incentive to try and take Tesla private.

“I believe short selling should be made illegal,” he said Friday. “It is a means…for bad people to steal money from small investors.”

Musk appears to be trying to show that his intent in 2018 — a brutal year for Tesla — was to try and take it private as a way to reduce some of the pressure imposed by the short sellers “who wanted Tesla to fail,” and from Wall Street’s expectations. He often pointed out how he favors retail investors, as opposed to Wall Street, and did not want to leave them out of any communications that big investors may receive.

In this upside-down world, Musk believes that investors funding a go-private transaction don’t need to see more financials than what is publicly available or complete any further due diligence of the company they will be taking private. In testimony, Musk often repeated he believed funding was secured from the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF), which purchased 5% of Tesla stock in the public market to demonstrate its interest in the company, without any sort of written agreement.

Despite the wide gap between 5% and 100%, Musk believed that a verbal agreement was good enough for a full take-private transaction worth billions.

“Taking a company private is different than buying shares in the open market,” said attorney Nicholas Porritt, the plaintiffs’s counsel. “It’s not significantly different, ” Musk said. “It’s not?” Porritt asked. “I don’t think so,” Musk replied.

Even after a September 2018 settlement of fraud charges with the Securities and Exchange Commission as a result of those tweets, Musk still refuses to admit that funding was not secured and that he made a mistake. On Monday, Musk said that his infamous tweet about “funding secured” to take Tesla private at $420 a share was not a joke, that he also would have sold his SpaceX shares to fund the transaction, and that one of the key Saudi Arabian investors who he believed promised him funding from one of the world’s largest sovereign funds to take Tesla private was “backpedaling” and “ass-covering” when he asked Musk for more financial information on Tesla so their teams could meet and discuss a transaction.

But is it possible to believe that a man who says he has probably “raised more money than anyone in history” could have such a naive view of high finance? In Musk’s world, individuals can just make an offer on a house, and that bank will show up later once your offer is accepted.

“It is like buying a house,” Musk offered during while being questioned by plaintiff’s counsel. “PIF [the Saudi Public Investment Fund] is like the bank, saying they will support you. There is still documentation after you agree to buy a house, but you are still going through with it.” When Porritt pointed out that when he bought a house he had to get a written commitment from a bank before even making an offer, Musk said that was not how things worked with the sovereign investment fund.

Referring to the fund’s 5% stake in Tesla, Musk said that he had told them to buy shares on the open market to show that they were serious about working together in the future.

“There were no documents signed, no discussion of price, they went forward,” Musk testified. “Therefore it was reasonable to expect that they would behave as they had in the past.”

In Musk’s alternate universe, ARK Invest, which has about $16 billion of assets under management in several ETFs, like the ARK Innovation Fund ARKK, -1.58%, is a stand-in for small investors. Musk noted ARK Chief Investment Officer Cathie Wood as among the most influential people who did not want Tesla to go private because her fund could not participate, and said she “represents small investors” when Porritt asked him if he received feedback from small investors about the transaction.

In the case’s actual reality, a small investor is the lead plaintiff. Investor Glen Littleton detailed in testimony last week how he used options trades on both sides of Tesla to hedge his investment in a company in which he truly believed. Littleton described how he felt blindsided by the CEO of that company as he lost money while trying to reposition for a go-private transaction he was convinced by Musk would happen.

“It was pretty much going to wipe me out,” he testified.

This is exactly the type of investor that Musk purports to represent: “I care a great deal about retail investors, they are our most loyal and steadfast investors,” he said, even while being sued by a class of shareholders who lost their investment because of Musk’s actions. He tried to add during testimony, but was barred from a further statement, about his distaste for class-action lawsuits.

On Tuesday, when asked by the plaintiffs’s counsel about whether he thought his tweets caused investors to lose money or whether he felt any regret, Musk said: “I never wanted investors to lose money. If he did lose money on the basis of that tweet I would be sad about that, but investors in the public market….on balance they have done extremely well.”

More from Therese: It’s time for Elon Musk to start telling the truth about autonomous driving

Musk made some of his comments while looking directly at the nine jurors. Sometimes stammering, sometimes speaking slowly, on Monday Musk also apologized for not being at his best because he did not sleep well. Wearing a dark suit, Musk also complained of terrible back pain after a few hours on the stand.

But he was also combative at times with the plaintiffs’ counsel and managed to get in plenty of his own self-serving statements without being asked. Observers and jurors were all sitting socially distanced, with masks, making it difficult to read reactions on the jurors’ faces.

It is much more reasonable to expect one of the world’s most successful businessmen to require more proof than “well, it worked last time,” before telling thousands of his investors that a deal is nearly done. And those with a sense of how these deals typically work showed just how off Musk was.

Before Musk took the stand late Friday afternoon, Harvard University professor Guhan Subramanian testified as to how Musk’s tweets and his proposed buyout of Tesla was an “extreme outlier” compared with a number of leveraged buyouts he had studied in his database, including the $40 billion buyout of Dell Inc. DELL, -0.29%. Subramanian called Musk’s Twitter feed “egregious corporate governance” and said there are a series of well-planned-out steps typical in these kinds of transactions, and Musk’s was incomplete, incoherent and illusory.

But that is just par for the course with Musk, who managed to summarize this view of himself after his lawyer referred to him as potentially the greatest fundraiser of all time:

“The reason I am able to raise money is because investors trust me to be truthful and responsible with their money,” Musk said.

How many investors still believe that, after the “funding secured” tweet and everything else that has followed it, up to and including his Tesla stock sales to fund the Twitter acquisition and the subsequent decline in Tesla stock to its worst month, quarter and year on record? That may be impossible to know, but we will find out soon whether the jurors believed anything he said about the world according to Elon Musk.

Movies re: Musk Rebrands Twitter to X & Blue Bird Logo Killed Off

Elon Musk Found NOT Guilty of Fraud Over Tesla Tweet

Tesla founder Elon Musk has been cleared of wrongdoing for a tweet in which he said he had "funding secured" to take the electric carmaker private.

BBC 4 FEB 2023

Mr Musk faced a class-action lawsuit filed on behalf of Tesla shareholders who argued he misled them with his posts in August 2018.

The proposed $72bn (£60bn) buyout never materialised.

If the San Francisco jury had found Mr Musk liable he could have been ordered to pay billions of dollars in damages.

It took the nine jurors less than two hours to reach their verdict on Friday afternoon.

Mr Musk - who had wanted the trial moved to Texas, where Tesla is based, arguing he could not get a fair trial in San Francisco - welcomed the outcome.

Taking to Twitter, the social media platform he bought for $44bn last October, he posted: "Thank goodness, the wisdom of the people has prevailed!

"I am deeply appreciative of the jury's unanimous finding of innocence in the Tesla 420 take-private case."

Central to the lawsuit was Mr Musk's tweet on 7 August 2018: "Am considering taking Tesla private at $420. Funding secured."

The plaintiffs also argued Mr Musk had lied when he tweeted later in the day that "investor support is confirmed".

The stock price surged after the tweets, but fell back again within days as it became clear the deal would not go through.

Investor losses were calculated as high as $12bn, according to an economist hired by the shareholders.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) sued Mr Musk over his tweets, accusing him of lying to investors. Mr Musk agreed to step aside as Tesla board chairman and settled for $20m.

During the three-week trial, Mr Musk - who also leads SpaceX and Twitter - had argued he thought he had a verbal commitment from Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund for the deal.

During his nearly nine hours on the witness stand, the world's second-richest man said: "Just because I tweet something does not mean people believe it or will act accordingly."

Shareholders had argued that "funding secured" suggested more than a verbal agreement.
Just a 'bad tweet'?

Although Tesla's share price shot up after the tweet was posted, Mr Musk also questioned whether his tweets had any effect on Tesla's share price.

"At one point I tweeted that I thought that, in my opinion, the stock price was too high... and it went higher, which is counterintuitive," he said - arguing the effect his tweets have on the stock price can be unpredictable.

Mr Musk said he eventually scrapped the plan to take Tesla private after his discussions with smaller investors led him to believe they would prefer that the firm remain publicly traded.

He was not in court when the verdict was read, but he was present during closing arguments earlier on Friday as duelling portraits were drawn of him by the rival legal teams.

Nicholas Porritt, a lawyer for the Tesla shareholders, said: "Our society is based on rules. We need rules to save us from anarchy. Rules should apply to Elon Musk like everyone else."

Mr Musk's attorney, Alex Spiro, said: "Just because it's a bad tweet doesn't make it a fraud."

After the verdict, Mr Porritt said: "We are disappointed with the verdict and are considering next steps."

Mr Musk was generally calm during his testimony - though at times he appeared annoyed at the line of questioning.

There were also times of levity. After a lawyer representing shareholders accidentally called Elon Musk "Mr Tweet", Elon Musk promptly changed his name on Twitter to the same moniker.

Several Tesla directors also testified, including James Murdoch, son of Rupert Murdoch. They testified that Mr Musk did not need the Tesla board to review buyout tweets.

Securities fraud lawyer Reed Kathrein called the tweet about taking Tesla private "as concrete a statement of taking a company private as there can be", and said the not guilty verdict was "a travesty to investors and the securities laws".

SMARMY Musk: Tesla Denies Firing Workers Over Union Campaign

Elon Musk's electric car maker Tesla has denied firing employees in response to a group of workers
trying to form a union in New York state.

BBC 18 FEB 2023

The company said it had laid off 27 staff for "poor performance" and that they "were identified... well before the union campaign was announced".

Organisers in the city of Buffalo alleged staff were sacked a day after the union went public with its plans.

They accused Tesla of firing more than 30 people to try to quash the campaign.

Tesla said in a blog post that the decision to lay off the workers, who were part of a 675-strong Autopilot labelling team, had been made on 3 February.

The firm said it only learned in hindsight that one of the 27 impacted employees "officially identified as part of the union campaign".

"The employees let go as part of this process received prior feedback on their poor performance from their managers over the course of the review period. Despite feedback, they did not demonstrate sufficient improvement," it added.

Mr Musk has been outspoken about his opposition to unions in the past.

"I strongly feel this is in retaliation to the committee announcement and it's shameful," said Arian Berek, a fired member of the union's organising committee.

In the complaint filed with government labour officials, the union cited 18 people it said the company had fired "in retaliation for union activity and to discourage union activity".

Organisers said, based on a company chat, they believed more people had been fired and expected to add names to the complaint. They said they were still confirming how many of those fired had been directly involved in the campaign or had just indicated their support.

The Buffalo facility employs about 2,000 people, according to organisers from Tesla Workers United, which is backed by the same union that launched organising efforts at Starbucks.

The group is now seeking support from Tesla workers in Buffalo to hold a vote about joining a union. It sent a letter to the company on Tuesday outlining its plans and asking leaders to agree to ground rules for a "fair" election.

A day later, campaigners said, Tesla fired more than 30 workers and sent an email informing staff of a policy that bars recording of workplace conversations without the consent of all parties.

Organisers said the rule violated their rights under federal and state laws.

The National Labor Relations Board has previously found that Tesla violated labour rules during an organising effort at its car manufacturing plant in California.

"We're angry. This won't slow us down. This won't stop us. They want us to be scared, but I think they just started a stampede," said Sara Costantino, current Tesla employee and organising committee member.

Twitter Hunts Down Github User Who Leaked Companys’ Source Code

On February 21, 2023, Twitter chief Elon Musk published a tweet suggesting that Twitter’s algorithm would be “made open source” before the end of that month.

Andy Maxwell, TF 27 MAR 2023

Before he took ownership of Twitter, Musk said that having the code out in the open would be a smart move, but the end of February came and went, without any code appearing in public.

On March 17, Musk raised the topic once again. “Twitter will open source all code used to recommend tweets on March 31st,” he tweeted. With the clock ticking on that event, someone with apparently similar plans but a more urgent publishing schedule, has taken Twitter by surprise.

FreeSpeechEnthusiast Presents: PublicSpace

On March 24, Twitter sent a DMCA takedown notice to GitHub targeting a repo named ‘PublicSpace’. The repo was created by a GitHub user called FreeSpeechEnthusiast, but with no description, nothing stood out as particularly interesting or out of the ordinary.

Knowing exactly what was made available isn’t straightforward without a live repo, but whatever the contents were, Twitter seems to be taking things very seriously.

Twitter Files DMCA Subpoena Application

On the same day the content was uploaded and then removed from GitHub, Julian Moore, Twitter Director and Associate General Counsel, filed an application for a DMCA subpoena at a federal court in California.

“On March 24, 2023, I submitted on behalf of Twitter a DMCA notification, via GitHub’s online DMCA notification form…identifying the Infringing Content on GitHub’s systems and providing the information required by 17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3)(A),” Moore’s declaration reads.

“The purpose of Twitter’s DMCA Subpoena is to identify the alleged infringer or infringers who posted Twitter’s source code on systems operated by GitHub without Twitter’s authorization, which postings infringe copyrights held by Twitter.”

Identifying the Infringer

Not satisfied with simply taking the repo and content down, Twitter is now trying to identify the person behind the username FreeSpeechEnthusiast on GitHub.

As the image below shows, Twitter believes GitHub may have a lot to offer.

There’s no doubt that GitHub will have all of this information to hand, but whether it will be of use to Twitter remains to be seen.

Some basic information is easy to determine without any special help from GitHub, including the date when the account was created – January 3, 2023 – and when there was activity on the repo.

The note from Twitter claims they have no contact information for FreeSpeechEnthusiast but TorrentFreak was able to identify an email address linked to a specialist encrypted provider.

Unsurprisingly, FreeSpeechEnthusiast did not respond to our request for comment.

Tesla: Carmaker Told to Pay Ex-Worker $3.2m Over Racism Case

Electric carmaker Tesla has been ordered to pay almost $3.2m (£2.6m) to a black former worker after he won a racial harassment lawsuit.

"If we had been allowed to introduce new evidence, the verdict would've been zero imo," Tesla chief executive Elon Musk said on Twitter.

BBC 4 APR 2023

Owen Diaz, a lift operator from 2015 to 2016 at its Fremont factory, was subjected to a racially hostile work environment, a federal jury found.

However, the payment has been slashed by 98% from the $137m that he was originally awarded in 2021.

A judge ruled last year that the initial amount was excessive.

On Monday, Mr Diaz was awarded $3m in punitive damages and $175,000 in damages for emotional distress.

"Jury did the best they could with the information they had. I respect the decision

Mr Musk did not provide details of what new evidence Tesla would have presented.

Tesla's lawyer Alex Spiro declined to comment. The company did not immediately respond to a BBC request for comment.

In the original lawsuit, Mr Diaz alleged that African-American workers "encountered a scene straight from the Jim Crow era" at the firm's plant in Fremont, California.

He claimed that black workers regularly faced racist slurs on the factory floor and racist graffiti in bathrooms.

The lawsuit also said that employees would refer to areas where black or African-American staff worked with racist historical names, such as "the plantation".

It alleged that one worker heard racial slurs "as often as 50-100 times a day".

In 2021, a federal court in San Francisco found that Tesla did not take reasonable steps to tackle the abuse, despite complaints to supervisors.

The jury awarded Mr Diaz $137m in damages. At the time Tesla disputed the verdict but said it recognised it was "not perfect".

In April 2022, a US federal judge cut Mr Diaz's award to $15m and said the compensation decided by jurors was "extremely high".

Bernard Alexander, a lawyer for Mr Diaz, said last week that: "Mr Diaz's outlook on the world has been permanently changed. That is what happens when you take away a person's safety."

Mr Alexander had called on jurors to award his client nearly $160m in damages.

However, Tesla's lawyer, Mr Spiro, argued that Mr Diaz's lawyers had failed to show that any serious, long-lasting damage had been caused by Tesla.

"They're just throwing numbers up on the screen like this is some kind of game show," Mr Spiro said.

Elon Musk Threatens to Sue Microsoft Over Twitter Data

Twitter boss Elon Musk has threatened to sue Microsoft as he accused the technology giant of using data from his social media company without permission.

"They trained illegally using Twitter data. Lawsuit time," the multi-billionaire said in a tweet.

BBC News 21 APR 2023

Musk was responding to Microsoft's plan to remove Twitter from its corporate advertising platform.

He did not provide further details or evidence to support the claim.

Microsoft declined to comment when approached by the BBC on Thursday.

Earlier, the company said in a notice that its advertising platform would "no longer support Twitter" from Tuesday 25 April.

As a result, ad buyers would not be able to access their Twitter accounts through Microsoft's social management tool.

"Other social media channels such as Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn will continue to be available," Microsoft said.

Twitter's press email responded to a query with a customary poo emoji.

In a separate tweet, in the discussion about the social media platform's data, Mr Musk said he was "open to ideas".

"But ripping off the Twitter database, demonetizing it (removing ads) and then selling our data to others isn't a winning solution," he added.

In February, Twitter started charging for the data it collects from "hundreds of millions" of users, with a basic plan starting at $100 a month.

The data allows users to "manage and track every aspect of your social media presence", according to the platform.

Since buying Twitter for $44bn (£35.4bn) in October, Mr Musk has cut its workforce by around 80% and moved to boost the company's finances through measures including charging users for "blue tick" verification.

In recent months, major companies including iPhone maker Apple reportedly halted advertising on the platform over concerns about how content was moderated on the site.

In November, Mr Musk said Twitter had seen a "massive" drop in revenue and blamed activists for pressuring advertisers.

Speaking to the BBC last week, he said Twitter had just months left to live when he took over. He also said "almost all advertisers have come back or said they are going to come back" to Twitter.

Mr Musk added that Twitter could be profitable by the second quarter of 2023, and he would be willing to sell the company if the right person came along.

Elon Musk Says He Has Appointed New Twitter Boss

Elon Musk says that he has found a new chief executive to lead Twitter.

BBC News 12 MAY 2023

He announced the news on the social media platform, which he bought last year for $44bn (£35.2bn).....OOPS HE FORGOT HIS PURPLE LIPSTICK...

Mr Musk did not name the site's new boss but said "she" would start in six weeks, at which point he would become executive chairman and chief technology officer.

He has been under pressure to name someone else to lead the company and focus on his other businesses.

Last year, after Twitter users voted for him to step down in an online poll, he said: "No one wants the job who can actually keep Twitter alive."

However, although Mr Musk had said he would hand over the reins, it was by no means clear when or even if it would happen.

Tesla shares rose after the announcement. Mr Musk has previously been accused by shareholders of abandoning Tesla after his takeover of Twitter and damaging the car company's brand.

"We ultimately view this as a major step forward with Musk finally reading the room that has been around this Twitter nightmare," Dan Ives from the investment firm Wedbush Securities said.

"Trying to balance Twitter, Tesla, and SpaceX as CEOs (is) an impossible task that needed to change," Mr Ives added.

According to two US media reports, NBCUniversal's head of advertising Linda Yaccarino was in talks to become the chief executive of Twitter. The Wall Street Journal and Variety cited people familiar with the matter.

Twitter did not comment on the reports. NBCUniversal did not immediately respond to a BBC request for comment.

It is sometimes difficult to know when the billionaire and owner of Twitter is being serious.

Last month, when the BBC asked Mr Musk who was going to be boss of Twitter, he said he had made a dog Twitter's leader.

But if Mr Musk has indeed appointed a female executive, it would make her one of the few women to reach the top of a major technology company.

Women accounted for fewer than 10% of chief executives of tech firms included in America's 500 biggest companies last year.

Although Mr Musk has talked about paid subscribers to Twitter Blue, it is advertising that brings in the vast majority of revenue at Twitter.

The new boss will no doubt seek to improve relationships with advertisers, and smooth their fears over content moderation.

Mr Musk, a self-proclaimed free speech absolutist, has said he took over Twitter to protect free speech. However advertisers do not want their content next to misinformation or extremist content.

He purchased Twitter in October only after a lawsuit forced him to go through with the deal. Upon taking charge, Mr Musk controversially fired thousands of staff in a bid to cut costs at the firm, which has struggled to be profitable.

In March, Mr Musk said those efforts had paid off and the platform's finances were improving.

And last month he told the BBC that most of the advertisers that had abandoned Twitter immediately after the acquisition had returned.

Ron DeSantis Elon Musk Interview: Campaign Launch Hits Technical Issues

Ron DeSantis's long-awaited entry into the 2024 race for the White House was hit by technical glitches after a Twitter livestream malfunctioned.

BBC 25 MAY 2023

It meant the Florida governor's bid for the Republican presidential nomination got under way 20 minutes late.

He went on to use the event to champion his conservative credentials, his anti-lockdown stance and education reforms.

"I am running for president of the United States to lead our great American comeback," he said.

The Florida governor is viewed as former President Donald Trump's chief rival to be their party's candidate in the 2024 general election.

He joins a growing list of contenders seeking to unseat Mr Trump, who leads the Republican field by more than 30 points in national opinion polls.

By the time Wednesday evening's Twitter talk had begun in earnest, hundreds of thousands of Twitter users had left the platform.

Since Mr Musk took the reins at Twitter in October, he has laid off thousands of employees, including engineers responsible for the site's operations and technical troubleshooting.

Mr DeSantis's team worked quickly to spin the technical stumbles, writing on Twitter that the announcement had broken "the internet with so much excitement", and posting a link to the campaign website.

His press secretary Bryan Griffin claimed the online event had raised $1m (£808,000) in an hour.

At one point, the Twitter event drew more than 600,000 listeners, according to Reuters news agency figures, but by its conclusion, there were fewer than 300,000. The BBC's interview with Elon Musk last month drew more than three million listeners on Twitter Spaces.

DeSantis: 'I have a chance to make a difference'

Once under way, Mr DeSantis turned the conversation to his conservative credentials, touting his handling of the Covid-19 crisis in his state - an anti-lockdown approach applauded by many Republicans.

He defended his reforms of Florida's education system, saying his state "chose facts over fear, education over indoctrination, law and order over rioting and disorder".

Later, speaking on Fox News, Mr DeSantis outlined more specific pledges including declaring an emergency at the country's southern border on day one in the White House. He also pledged to fire FBI Director Christopher Wray, a Trump appointee, and slash President Joe Biden's "anti-American energy policies".

Earlier on Wednesday, Mr DeSantis confirmed he would seek the Republican presidential nomination, registering with the Federal Election Commission before releasing a stylised announcement video.

"Our border is a disaster, crime infests our cities... and the president flounders," he says in the video. "But decline is a choice, success is attainable, and freedom is worth fighting for."

Trump and his campaign greeted Mr DeSantis's much anticipated arrival into the 2024 field with a barrage of emails and posts to Truth Social, the former president's social media platform.

Soon after the governor told Mr Musk he would study the US Constitution to "see what buttons can I push" to invoke executive authority, Trump released a statement addressing Mr DeSantis directly.

"'Rob,' My Red Button is bigger, better, stronger, and is working (TRUTH!), yours does not! (per my conversation with Kim Jung Un, of North Korea, soon to become my friend!)," Mr Trump wrote.

The latest survey from Morning Consult - published last week, before Mr DeSantis's announcement - has him a distant second behind Trump, with a 38-point margin.

Through a lengthy primary process beginning early next year, Republican voters will decide which candidate will face President Joe Biden, a Democrat, in the November 2024 general election.

Mr DeSantis is a relative newcomer in US politics, having first been elected to the House of Representatives in 2012. Just six years later in 2018 - after a failed bid to become a senator - he was elected governor of Florida.

He has overseen the enactment of high-profile laws that make it easier to own a gun, restrict sex and gender identity education in schools, and curtail abortion access. He has claimed that this "Florida Blueprint" can act as a guide for federal policies, one that would move the US in a sharply conservative direction.

And Florida's last legislative session cleared a potential "resign-to-run" hurdle for Mr DeSantis's candidacy after it passed a bill that ensures he does not have to leave the governor's mansion to run for the presidency.

Mr DeSantis will also have the benefit of a formidable war chest. At the end of last month, he had $88m (£71m) in a fund left over from his Florida re-election campaign that can be transferred to his White house bid.

He also reportedly has about $30m controlled by an independent committee that his allies can use to support his campaign.

Trump, by contrast, reported a combined $18.8m in fundraising over the first three months of 2023.

Mr DeSantis is expected to tap Generra Peck to serve as his campaign manager. Ms Peck, Mr DeSantis's top political adviser, led the daily operations of the governor's 2022 re-election campaign, guiding him to a nearly 20-point victory.

And hiring is already under way for DeSantis campaign bases in at least 18 states, according to reporting from the Associated Press and the New York Times.

Update re: Musk Rebrands Twitter to X & Blue Bird Logo Killed Off

Twitter Engineering Boss QUITS After DeSantis Launch Glitches

An engineering chief at Twitter says he is leaving the company the day after the launch of Ron DeSantis' US presidential campaign on the platform was hit with technical glitches.

BBC 26 MAY 2023

Foad Dabiri tweeted: "After almost four incredible years at Twitter, I decided to leave the nest yesterday."

Mr DeSantis' entry into the race for the White House was hit by problems as a Twitter livestream malfunctioned.

More than 80% of the firm's workforce has been cut since Mr Musk bought it.

Mr Dabiri, who was the engineering lead for Twitter's Growth organisation, said in a tweet he had "experienced two distinct eras" at the company, before and after it was acquired by the multi-billionaire last year.

In another post, Mr Dabiri said the transition into Twitter's "2.0" was "massive and rapid".

He added: "To say it was challenging at the outset would be an understatement."

Mr Dabiri did not specify why he decided to leave Twitter, and whether it was related to the problems with the DeSantis event on the platform.

He did not immediately respond to a BBC request for comment. Twitter did not provide a statement on Mr Dabiri's exit when approached by the BBC.

However, Mr Dabiri said: "Working with @elonmusk has been highly educational, and it was enlightening to see how his principles and vision are shaping the future of this company."

Issues with a Twitter livestream meant that an event to launch Mr Desantis' bid for the Republican presidential nomination got under way 20 minutes late.

By the time Wednesday evening's Twitter talk had begun in earnest, hundreds of thousands of Twitter users had left the platform.

Mr Musk, who also runs car maker Tesla and rocket firm SpaceX, bought Twitter for $44bn (£35.4bn) in October.

Speaking to the BBC last month, he said that cutting the workforce from just under 8,000 people at the time he bought the firm to about 1,500 had not been easy.

Since Musk took the reins at Twitter, he has laid off thousands of employees, including engineers responsible for the site's operations and technical troubleshooting.

Mr DeSantis' team worked quickly to spin the technical stumbles, writing on Twitter that the announcement had broken "the internet with so much excitement", and posting a link to the campaign website.

CREEPY Elon Musk Accused of Owing $500m in Twitter Severance

Number of Twitter Staff Suing Goes Up Daily -Complaints Filed in Federal Court

A former human resources boss at Twitter has accused the company of failing to pay roughly $500m (£385m) in severance pay owed to former staff of the company.

BBC NEWS 14 JUL 2023

Courtney McMillian, who was the social media site's former "head of total rewards", made the claim in a class-action lawsuit.

The complaint says Twitter owner Elon Musk knew about the severance plan before he sacked thousands of staff.

But it says he balked at the “expense”.

It is the latest of multiple lawsuits filed against the company over the mass firings that followed Mr Musk's purchase of Twitter for $44bn (£34bn) last year.

The layoffs ultimately affected roughly 6,000 people, according to the lawsuit.

Under Twitter’s severance plan, staff were due to receive a minimum of two months base salary in severance and a cash contribution toward health insurance, among other benefits, according to the complaint filed in federal court in San Francisco.

Those with more senior roles, including Ms McMillian, were due six months base salary in severance pay, plus one week for each full year of experience, it says.

But staff received “at most” three months of pay after they were sacked. That included one month of severance, as well as two months worth of pay to comply with a US law aimed at providing workers with notice of firings, according to the complaint.

That was a “fraction” of the $500m to which employees were entitled, it says.

Twitter, which no longer has a public relations department, did not comment.

Mr Musk said in November following a round of mass layoffs that staff would receive three months worth of pay, “50% more than legally required”.

The complaint accused Mr Musk of misleading employees about whether the company would honour the plan, leading some to remain at the firm for longer than they would have otherwise.

"Musk initially represented to employees that under his leadership Twitter would continue to abide by the severance plan," said Kate Mueting, the lawyer from Sanford Heisler Sharp who is representing Ms McMillian.

"He apparently made these promises knowing that they were necessary to prevent mass resignations that would have threatened the viability of the merger and the vitality of Twitter itself," she added.

Twitter Loses Nearly Half Advertising Revenue Since Elon Musk Takeover

Twitter has lost almost half of its advertising revenue since it was bought by Elon Musk for $44 billion (£33.6bn) last October, its owner has revealed.

BBC NEWS 17 JUL 2023

He said the company had not seen the increase in sales that had been expected in June, but added that July was a "bit more promising."

Mr Musk sacked about half of Twitter's 7,500 staff when he took over in 2022 in a effort to cut costs.

Rival app Threads now has 150 million users, according to some estimates.

Its in-built connection to Instagram automatically gives the Meta-designed platform access to a potential two billion users.

Meanwhile, its competitor is struggling under a heavy debt load. Cash flow remains negative, Mr Musk said at the weekend, although the billionaire did not put a time frame on the 50% drop in ad revenue.

In a tweet he said: "Need to reach positive cash flow before we have the luxury of anything else."

After laying off thousands of employees and cutting cloud service bills, Mr Musk said Twitter was on track to post $3bn (£2.29bn) in revenue in 2023, down from $5.1bn in 2021.

The development is the latest sign the aggressive cost-cutting measures have not been enough to ignite a return of advertisers who fled after changes to its content moderation rules.

That is despite an interview the former chief executive gave to the BBC in April in which he suggested that most had returned to the site.

Earlier this month Twitter decided to restrict how many tweets its users could read. It follows efforts to push users towards Twitter Blue, its paid subscription service.

Linda Yaccarino, previously head of advertising at NBCUniversal, was taken on as chief executive in June - a move suggesting advertising sales are still a priority for Twitter.
Ms Yaccarino has said Twitter plans to focus on video, creator and commerce partnerships. It is said to be in early talks with political and entertainment figures, payments services, and news and media publishers.

Elon Musk to Rebrand Twitter Site and Logo to ‘X’

Elon Musk: Twitter Rebranded as X as Blue Bird Logo Killed Off

BBC NEWS 24 JULY 2023

Twitter has changed its brand and logo from its famous blue bird to "X".

The new white X on a black background has replaced the blue bird on the desktop version of the social network, although is yet to appear on the mobile app.

"Tweets" will also be replaced, according to Twitter's owner Elon Musk, and posts will be called "x's".

The billionaire changed his profile picture to the new logo and added "X.com" to his Twitter bio.

Musk wants to create a "super app" called X - his vision for a new kind of social media platform that he has been talking about creating for months.
On Sunday, the billionaire said he was looking to change Twitter's logo, tweeting: "And soon we shall bid adieu to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds."

Elon Musk Biographer Describes Demons That Defined His Childhood

Elon Musk Has Demon-Like Outbursts and Multiple Personalities- Biographer

BBC 13 SEP 2023

Elon Musk is prone to “demon-like” outbursts that he can “hardly remember” in the aftermath, according to his biographer.

Walter Isaacson, who followed the Tesla tycoon around for three years for the bombshell biography set to be released Tuesday, described the billionaire as having “multiple personalities.”

In a Monday interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” host Joe Scarborough asked Isaacson about the different sides of the eccentric 52-year-old, saying his new book paints “two, three, four types of Elon.”

“You know, that’s a great question because he has so many personalities, almost like multiple personalities, and a bit like his father, whom he doesn’t speak to now — but his father is a Jekyll and Hyde and sometimes goes very dark,” the biographer replied.

“And it happened to Elon too. He’ll go from being very giddy or being in engineering mode, where he can figure out the valve of a raptor engine, and suddenly the clouds come,” he continued.

“And the amazing thing is, after he’s gone dark and been demon-like and really tough on people, he’ll snap out of it. And then I’ll ask him, ‘What was that about?’ and he hardly remembers it.”

Isaacson explained how he saw Musk change as he followed him around over the past three years.

“When I started this book, when we first talked about it, this was the guy who was bringing us into the era of electric vehicles and the only person who could send American astronauts into orbit from the US. I thought, ‘Hey, good technology story,'” he told Scarborough.

“And then on the way, about a year into my reporting, he’s secretly buying up Twitter and then going to Hawaii in a two or three night binge and deciding to take it over,” the journalist said of Musk’s shock announcement last year that he was buying the social media giant.

“So it became a hell of a lot more of a rollercoaster ride then.”

Isaacson added: “And the dark strands in him, as well as the competent strands, are tightly woven together.”

In one excerpt from his book, billionaire Bill Gates told how Musk was “super mean” to him after the Microsoft co-founder purchased a short position on Tesla stock.

Elon Musk: Social Media Platform X, Formerly Twitter, Could Go Behind Paywall

Elon Musk is considering putting all of Twitter behind a paywall and what it says about his vision for monetizing the social media platform.

BBC 20 SEP 2023

Elon Musk has suggested that all users of X, formerly called Twitter, may have to pay for access to the platform.

In a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the billionaire said a payment system was the only way to counter bots.

"We're moving to having a small monthly payment for use of the system," the Tesla and SpaceX boss said.

The BBC approached X for further details but has not yet received a statement from the company.

It is unclear whether this was just an off-the-cuff comment, or a signal of firmer plans that have yet to be announced.

Mr Musk has long said that his solution for getting rid of bots and fake accounts on the social media platform is charging for verification.

Since taking over Twitter last year he has looked to incentivise users to pay for an enhanced service, which is now called X Premium.

This has been done by giving paid subscribers more features, like longer posts and increased visibility on the platform.

Although there is a clear financial interest for the company to charge users, Mr Musk insisted that getting people to pay for the service is aimed at tackling bots.

"A bot costs a fraction of a penny" to make he said. "But if somebody even has to pay a few dollars or something, some minor amount, the effective cost to bots is very high".

X Premium currently costs $8 (£6.50) a month in the US. The price differs depending on which country a subscriber is in.

The world's richest person said that he was now looking at cheaper options for users.

"We're actually going to come up with a lower tier pricing. So we just want it to be just a small amount of money," he said.

"This is a longer discussion, but in my view, this is actually the only defence against vast armies of bots," Mr Musk added.

However, a risk is that by putting X behind a paywall it may lose a large chunk of its users. That in turn, could drive down advertising revenue, which currently accounts for the vast majority of the company's income.

Mr Musk's conversation with the Israeli prime minister also touched on antisemitism on X.

The platform has been accused by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) campaign group of not doing enough to stop antisemitic content.

In a statement, the organisation said that Mr Musk was "engaging with and elevating" antisemites.

Earlier this month, he said that the company would sue the ADL to "clear our platform's name".

In the conversation with Mr Netanyahu, Mr Musk reiterated that he was "against antisemitism".

Mr Netanyahu accepted the balance between free speech and content moderation was a challenge but urged Mr Musk to get the balance right.

"I hope you find within the confines of the First Amendment, the ability to stop not only antisemitism... but any collective hatred of people that antisemitism represents," he said.

"I know you're committed to that", Mr Netanyahu added.

Errol Musk, 'I Took My Son Elon Musk to a Sex Party When He Was NINE'....

Errol Musk 77, Gives an Exclusive Interview About His Eldest Son Elon

BBC 30 SEP 2023

Error Musk, 77, has eight children, the eldest of whom, Elon, is the richest man on the planet

Tesla CEO's father says his son was in love with Amber Heard and Depp blames him for breakdown of marriage, Grimes is a 'bit of a nutcase' and X Æ A-12 is a weird name in exclusive interview

Errol Musk isn't too sure how many grandchildren he has. 'Sixteen? Seventeen? It's hard to keep count,' he says. I'm sure.

At the age of 77, he has eight children, the eldest of whom, Elon, is not only the richest man on the planet but, well, let's just say he's a huge chip off the old go-forth-and-multiply block.

Indeed, earlier this month it was revealed in a sensational new biography that Elon had a secret eleventh child. It's the latest addition to the billionaire's sprawling family tree, which is singular in its complexity thanks to his many relationships with women, some of which appear to have been conducted simultaneously.

Tellingly, as I discover in this exclusive interview, Errol's take on his son's progeny is spectacularly relaxed.

'Men trying to spread their seed is natural. I've got about five people who claim they've got my child. Who knows? When Elon was living with me as a boy and I was mixing with the horsey set [Errol owned a stables for thoroughbred showjumpers] you stopped counting the number of women you'd been with after 200. Having 11 children is great. Why not, if you can afford it?'

Clearly, the apple hasn't fallen far from the tree.

I meet Errol at his rather fabulous open-plan house on the coast of the Western Cape, South Africa, shortly after the publication of that new explosive biography of the Tesla magnate, Twitter/X owner and space buccaneer.

It's a moment when Errol is very much in the limelight, thanks to author Walter Isaacson's damning portrayal of him as a manipulative, abusive husband and father. So much so that in the book Elon describes his childhood with his dad as one of 'mental torture'.

Here, for the first time since the book's accusations made global headlines, Errol reveals his side of the story. And there is much to reveal — not least his response to accusations that, as one of Elon's partners once put it, the entrepreneur was 'conditioned in his childhood to see life as pain'.

Not forgetting, too, Errol's take on the much-vaunted thesis that Elon's chaotic, almost masochistic, love life is a direct consequence of his tortured relationship with his father. Errol and his wife, Maye, divorced in 1979 and Elon and his two siblings stayed with their mother. A year later, when Elon was nine, he went to live with his father.

In the new book, however, Elon describes his father as 'pure evil'.....

So was Elon's childhood really one of utter agony?

'Unbridled rubbish,' says Errol. He raises his hands in the air as if to say 'what the hell...'

On the kitchen island are some birthday cards. One is from Errol's daughter Rose, Elon's half-sister and the youngest of two children from Errol's third marriage to Heide Bezuidenhout.

Rose has written: 'Thanks for being such an amazing dad. I love you.'

'Every time she sends the same message,' says Errol. 'Everything I am, I owe to you.' '

He adds: 'It's true of Elon too. Everything he is, he owes to me. I say that with humility. I did my best. That book is not the truth. It's fodder for a play. I emailed the author and told him that.'

Elon aged two wearing an American football outfit and helmet

As well as thoroughly defending himself, Errol paints a startling portrait of his son's personal life and discusses in rather bald terms what Elon is like as a husband and father.

Perhaps most fascinating of all, he offers an insight into Elon's relationship with Hollywood actress Amber Heard, whom he dated for several months in 2017.

'I thought Amber Heard was perfect for him,' says Errol. As you may remember, Depp notoriously accused Elon of having an affair with Heard while they were still married; the couple later endured several court proceedings after Heard accused Depp of beating her. Depp was eventually awarded damages by a jury.

Errol continues: '[Depp] blames Elon for the breakdown of his marriage and is on the cusp of suing him for that still.

'Elon was in love with Amber for a long while before she got divorced from Johnny Depp. It's natural to want to be the dominant seed. But if you have children in vitro . . . ' Errol frowns and shakes his head.

It becomes apparent when Errol discusses his son's chequered love-life that he's not what you might call progressive.

The facts, though, are these. Following the desperately sad death of Elon's firstborn child with his first wife Justine in 2002 from sudden infant death syndrome, the couple turned to IVF to father their twins and then, again, for their triplets. They divorced in 2008, but shared custody.

The same year, Elon married British actress Talulah Riley — they went on to marry and divorce twice, finally ending their pairing in 2016.

Elon (left) is pictured with Kimbal with their father's Rolls Royce

In 2018, Elon and the Canadian singer Grimes used IVF to help conceive their son.Bizarrely, they called him X.

Later, they welcomed their first daughter Exa Dark Siderael, whom they call Y, via a surrogate in 2021. The birth of their third child — a son named Techno Mechanicus — was revealed in Isaacson's book this month.

As if all that wasn't enough, Elon is also father to 22-month-old twins, apparently again conceived via IVF with his employee Shivon Zilis, who were born in 2021, just weeks before the birth of his daughter Exa.

'He had some children with one woman in vitro while he was living with another woman,' says Errol bluntly.

'That's a tricky thing because children ask questions later on. 'Why did you do this or that?' 'Did you love my mother?' Children are very critical. They don't forgive their parents for things they think their parents could have done differently. I've experienced that with Elon.

'X is a weird name for a child, completely weird. I think that Grimes girl is weird, too. The last I heard she was living with a woman, then she's back with him, then she's gone again. She's a bit of a nutcase. Now Elon's on his own. He wants a woman who's got brains and beauty.'

When discussing his son's approach to fatherhood, it becomes clear that Errol thinks Elon's offspring are worryingly cosseted in comparison to how he raised his children, who were brought up in South Africa.

'I bought Elon his first motorbike when he was eight and his brother, Kimbal, was seven. They rode them mostly on the farm but later took to the public roads wearing helmets.

'They never had any accidents. Kimbal said to me recently, in reference to the mighty mollycoddling of children these days, that buying them motorbikes at that age was insane but my kids had a real upbringing.

'We went down the Amazon, went to Tanzania and northern Zambia where everyone you met had an AK47. At the age of 12 or 13 they could take a Learjet around Heathrow.

'Their kids, on the other hand, all have nannies and have had since they were born. Because they're so wealthy each one has their own European nanny so at the age of 14 or 15 they can't cross the street unless the nanny takes them.'

Elon Musk is the CEO of Space X, Twitter and Tesla

Advertisers Leave X After Elon Musk Promotes Antisemitic Post

Social media firm boss says he will sue media watchdog that said ads were being placed alongside antisemitic content

BBC 18 NOV 2023

Elon Musk said he would file a lawsuit ‘against Media Matters and ALL those who colluded in this fraudulent attack on our company’

Elon Musk has said he will be filing a “thermonuclear lawsuit” against Media Matters and others, after major US companies paused their adverts on his social media site over concerns about antisemitism.

The media watchdog Media Matters said earlier this week that it found corporate advertisements by IBM, Apple, Oracle and Comcast’s Xfinity were being placed alongside antisemitic content, including that praising Adolf Hitler and the Nazis.

It led to a number of big names in technology and media announcing they would be withdrawing their advertising. It also included Warner Brothers, Paramount and Disney.

“The split second court opens on Monday, X Corp will be filing a thermonuclear lawsuit against Media Matters and ALL those who colluded in this fraudulent attack on our company,” Musk said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Musk on Wednesday agreed with a post on X that falsely claimed Jewish people were stoking hatred against white people, saying the user, who referenced the “great replacement” conspiracy theory, was speaking “the actual truth”.

“This week Media Matters for America posted a story that completely misrepresented the real experience on X, in another attempt to undermine freedom of speech and mislead advertisers,” a statement posted by Musk said.

“Above everything, including profit, X works to protect the public’s right to free speech. But for speech to be truly free, we must also have the freedom to see or hear things that some people may consider objectionable,” he added.

He did not reference the furore around his tweet, but has previously denied he is antisemitic.

Musk went on to deny Media Matters’ findings.

Apple had been one of X’s biggest advertisers and was spending up to $100m (£80m) a year as of November 2022 when Musk bought it, Bloomberg has reported.

Since then, there has been a trend of X advertisers falling, and user numbers declining – while Musk has brought in a paid premium system, claiming it was to target bots on the site.

The White House joined the outcry against Musk’s tweet on Friday, with a statement calling it an “abhorrent promotion of antisemitic and racist hate” that runs against our core values as Americans”.

Referring to the 7 October attacks by Hamas against Israel, the White House spokesperson Andrew Bates said:

“It is unacceptable to repeat the hideous lie … one month after the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust.”
