Popcorn META Lifts TRUMPs' BAN on Facebook & Instagram

TRUMP to Launch New Social Media Platform TRUTH Social

Former US President Donald Trump has announced plans to launch a new social media network, called TRUTH Social.

BBC News 21 OCT 2021

He said the platform would "stand up to the tyranny of big tech", accusing them of silencing opposing voices in the US.

Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), which he chairs, also intends to launch a subscription video-on-demand service.

Trump was banned or suspended from social networks like Twitter and Facebook after crowds of his supporters stormed the US Capitol in January.

He and his advisers have since hinted that they were planning to create a rival social media site.

Earlier this year, he launched From the Desk of Donald J Trump, which was often referred to as a blog.

The website was permanently shut down less than a month after it launched. His senior aide Jason Miller said it was "just auxiliary to the broader efforts we have and are working on".

An early version of his latest venture, TRUTH Social, will be open to invited guests next month, and will have a "nationwide rollout" within the first three months of 2022, according to a statement by TMTG.

"We live in a world where the Taliban has a huge presence on Twitter, yet your favourite American President has been silenced," wrote Mr Trump.

"Everyone asks me why doesn't someone stand up to Big Tech? Well, we will be soon!" he added.

Analysis box by James Clayton, North America technology reporter

Donald Trump's team is making a big deal of this. Yet there's no indication that the new company has a working platform yet. The new site is just a registration page.

He wants to create a platform that rivals Twitter or Facebook, but that simply won't happen.

By its very nature the platform is overtly politicised. It is not going to be a talking shop of ideas like Twitter, or a place the whole family is on like Facebook.

What it could be is a more successful version of other 'free speech' social media platforms like Parler or Gab.

Donald Trump clearly wants his megaphone back. He thinks this might be his ticket. But if he's really going to be heard, he needs the Big Tech platforms to let him back on - and that's not going to happen anytime soon.

TMTG said its video-on-demand service would "feature 'non-woke' entertainment programming, news, podcasts, and more".

The firm said it intends to merge with a special-purpose acquisition company (Spac) listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange.

Spacs are set up with the purpose of buying a private firm to merge with and then take public on the stock market.

Spacs, also called "blank cheque companies", have seen a surge of popularity in recent years, and are seen as a faster route to taking a company public with less scrutiny.

Trump's announcement comes months after his former aide Jason Miller launched another social media company called GETTR.

United States of America re: META Lifts TRUMPs' BAN on Facebook & Instagram

A Year On, Has TRUMP Benefited From a Twitter BAN?

Aides to Mr Trump says he'll launch his own social media platform - Truth Social - next month.

In 2016, fresh from his stunning presidential victory, Donald Trump sat down to be interviewed on the prestigious US news show 60 Minutes.

BBC News 12 JAN 2022.

He was asked about his use of social media.

"I'm going to be very restrained, if I use it at all," he said.

That didn't quite work out. He used it continuously, racking up more than 20,000 tweets during his presidency.

Mr Trump's strategy was to dominate the news cycle. Twitter in particular helped him do that.

Journalists in newsrooms around the world waited for his first daily tweet to drop. "He's up," was the popular refrain. He was a news-making machine.

Mr Trump said his use of Twitter and other platforms was a way of bypassing traditional media - speaking directly to voters.

Just before the 2020 election he was asked, once again on CBS' 60 Minutes, whether his tweets were putting off voters:

"No, I think I wouldn't be here if I didn't have social media… and frankly if I didn't have social media I'd have no way of getting out my voice." he said.

Yet within three months, Mr Trump was to be spectacularly dumped from every single major social media network. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube.

For someone who credits his political existence to social media this could have caused catastrophe.

And yet it hasn't.

In fact there is a school of thought that being off social media, at least for now, has actually helped him.

The broad theory is that Mr Trump, by staying relatively quiet, is following Napoleon's advice: Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.

On Sunday a Trump adviser told the Wall Street Journal: "I don't know a single person in Trump world who regrets that this has happened - not a single one."

That seems counter-intuitive, but it's not a fringe view. Darrell West, vice-president at the policy research group Brookings Governance, agrees.

"At a time when the pandemic has come back, the economy is slowing and there have been foreign policy disasters, you want public attention focused on the incumbent," he says.

"Biden's numbers have dropped considerably. So I think Trump has benefited from not being in the spotlight."

Opinion polls suggested that Mr Trump's at times erratic tweets were turning some conservatives off. Perhaps a break was needed.

Certainly his mentions on social media are way down - yet his grip over the Republican party is as tight as ever.

Make no mistake, though, Mr Trump wants his posting rights back.

Few would argue that a social media ban which stretched into 2024 would help a bid for the White House (if he decides to run).

His team might say he has benefited from some downtime, but ultimately they want their man un-muzzled. They are currently suing Facebook, Twitter and Google in an attempt to reverse their decisions.

In theory Mr Trump will be allowed back onto Facebook in a year's time, on 7 January 2023 to be exact.

Twitter has said that their suspension is permanent. However, there is some hope for Mr Trump here. He could of course win his court challenge, though legal experts think that is unlikely.

But there are other potential routes back to Twitter for Mr Trump. For one, Twitter has a new CEO. Jack Dorsey has been replaced by Parag Agrawal. The bad news for Mr Trump is so far Mr Agrawal has shown little sign of any change of direction - with Twitter banning Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene last week.

Twitter permanently suspended Marjorie Taylor Greene for repeated violations of its rules around coronavirus misinformation

Banning a president on his way out is one thing, though. If Trump were to become the Republican presidential nominee, West argues, there would be immense pressure to let him back on.

"If he becomes an announced candidate, I think there's a good chance he will be back," he says.

"American law traditionally allows wide latitude to candidates to say whatever they want, even if what they're saying is completely inaccurate and full of falsehoods."

Aides to Mr Trump says he'll launch his own social media platform - Truth Social - next month.

No doubt it will attract high-profile Republicans and his supporters. But it's hard to see how it would challenge Twitter or Facebook.

Mr Trump may not like it, but if he wants revenge in 2024, he may well need some help from the people he despises, Big Tech bosses in Silicon Valley, to give him back his microphone.

Big Grin re: META Lifts TRUMPs' BAN on Facebook & Instagram

TRUMP's Truth Social App Branded a Disaster

In October, Donald Trump announced he was planning to launch a revolutionary technology company.

BBC News 4 APR 2022.

"I created Truth Social… to stand up to the tyranny of big tech," he said.........

"We live in a world where the Taliban has a huge presence on Twitter yet your favourite American president has been silenced."

The app launched on Presidents' Day, 21 February, but six weeks later is beset by problems. A waiting list of nearly 1.5 million are unable to use it.

Number 1,419,631

Truth Social looks a lot like Twitter, a platform that banned Mr Trump after a mob of his supporters attacked the United States Capitol Building.

Twitter believed Donald Trump, by making false claims the election had been "stolen", had incited violence. He was banned for life on 8 January, 2021.

Truth Social might look like Twitter, but it isn't available on Android phones, web browsers or, apparently, to most people outside the US.

"It's been a disaster," Joshua Tucker, director of NYU's Center for Social Media and Politics, said.

And a Republican ally of Mr Trump's, who did not wish to be identified, said: "Nobody seems to know what's going on."

On 21 February, Truth Social was one of the App Store's most downloaded apps - but many who downloaded it were unable to use it.

There was an assumption this problem would soon be resolved and Mr Trump would start posting his "truths" in the coming days - but neither of those things happened.

My attempt to register, this week, was placed at number 1,419,631 on the waiting list.

Screengrab from Truth Social registration page

While YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook are among the 10 most downloaded apps, according to Similar Web, Truth Social is outside the top 100.

Users who find their way in can find the app a little empty, as many big voices on the American right have so far stayed away.

Another study found downloads have fallen by as much as 95%.

And many are feeling frustrated.

"Signed up for Truth Social a couple weeks ago and still on a waiting list," one Twitter user said, on Tuesday.

"By the time I'm off the waiting list and on to Truth Social for real, Trump will be President again," joked another.

Baffled Experts

Truth Social chief executive Devin Nunes said its goal was to be "fully operational" by the end of March.

But quite why the app is having so many problems has baffled experts.

Some have pointed to Truth Social's partnership with Rumble, a video-sharing platform that looks a bit like YouTube.

Popular with conservatives and the far right, Rumble was supposed to provide a "critical backbone" for the site's infrastructure.

But if Truth Social is having server problems, why has it taken so long to fix?

"It should take a few days to fix, not six weeks," a Republican source close to Mr Trump said.

"There's always going to be hiccups at the beginning - but at this point, I would have thought it would have been resolved.

"Nobody seems to understand why."

Rival Competitors

Mr Trump is furious, asking why more people are not using Truth Social.

He has about 750,000 followers but has not posted a "truth" for well over a month.

Donald Trump's last post on Truth Social was published in mid February

"Maybe
they are holding him back," Mr Tucker said....

"That's his last chance to launch it - when suddenly Trump comes in and starts being really active on it, that will get a buzz."

Much maligned, Truth Social could still rival competitors such as Gab and Gettr.

Mr Trump retains star quality and any "free speech" app would bend over backwards to have him on its platform.

But at the moment, Truth Social has become a little embarrassing.

A platform supposed to stand up to Silicon Valley's heavyweights has barely been able to get to its feet.

Meta Ends Trumps' Suspension on Facebook and Instagram While Pledging 'New Guardrails'

Former President Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts are being reinstated, the social media giant Meta announced Wednesday — a little more than two years after he was suspended from the platforms over incendiary posts on the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol.

BBC 26 JAN 2023

Trump’s accounts will be reinstated “in the coming weeks” and come with “new guardrails in place to deter repeat offenses,” Nick Clegg, president, global affairs at Meta, said in a statement. Meta owns Facebook and Instagram.

Those guardrails will include "heightened penalties for repeat offenses — penalties which will apply to other public figures whose accounts are reinstated from suspensions related to civil unrest under our updated protocol. In the event that Mr. Trump posts further violating content, the content will be removed and he will be suspended for between one month and two years, depending on the severity of the violation," Clegg said on the company's website.

Trump celebrated the announcement on his social media platform Truth Social.

"FACEBOOK, which has lost Billions of Dollars in value since 'deplatforming' your favorite President, me, has just announced that they are reinstating my account. Such a thing should never again happen to a sitting President, or anybody else who is not deserving of retribution!" he wrote.

Asked why Meta was reinstating Trump despite recent inflammatory posts on Truth Social, Clegg told NBC News the company wanted to tread lightly on censorship concerns.

“We’re not trying to kind of, you know, censor everything that everyone says in an open and free democracy," Clegg said in an interview with Hallie Jackson. "We think that open and free debate on the rough and tumble of democratic debate should play out on Facebook and Instagram as much as anywhere else.”

Clegg contended that Meta has demonstrated a willingness to “draw a very sharp line,” knowing that what’s posted on Facebook and Instagram can lead to real world harm, and that the company “will act, and we have acted.”

Meta's decision to lift Trump's suspension comes weeks after the timeframe Facebook gave itself to re-evaluate the 2021 ban, and shortly after Republicans — many of whom have been critical of Facebook’s decision — regained control of the House of Representatives.

Then-House Minority Leader — and now House Speaker — Kevin McCarthy vowed to “rein in big tech power over our speech” after Facebook announced the duration of Trump’s suspension in 2021.

Trump’s presidential campaign officially petitioned the social media giant to allow Trump back on to the platform earlier this month.

“We believe that the ban on President Trump’s account on Facebook has dramatically distorted and inhibited the public discourse,” Trump’s campaign wrote in its Jan. 17 letter to Meta, according to a copy of the letter reviewed by NBC News.
