A former Miss England beauty queen contestant is facing up to 20 years in Mexican prison after she was arrested on suspicion of trying to smuggle over £250,000 worth of ketamine.

Jennifer Young arrived from Amsterdam to Cancun in August last year and was allegedly found to have 13.080kg of the drug hidden in packets and bottles in a false bottom in her suitcase.

A tweet from the Mexican police at the time read: “In the arrivals of Cancun International Airport, National Guards and airport personnel found several packets and packages that appeared to be cocaine hidden in a hidden layer of a bag belonging to foreign national.”

Her mother Angela only learned what happened a few weeks ago when her only daughter failed to phone her to wish her happy birthday.

She was arrested on suspicion of smuggling over £250,000 worth of ketamine into Cancun airport

Angela told MailOnline: "I'm still in shock. I knew Jenny was in Mexico but I thought she was travelling. I've only just found out Jenny is in prison. My birthday is in March and wherever in the world Jenny is she calls me. But she didn't get in touch and I started to worry.

"Then I got a message from her friend. I asked him where she was. After a lot of messages, he finally told me that she was in jail. I couldn't believe it."

She said her family believed she was simply travelling around the country, but has now found out the whole truth.

Angela said Jennifer told her she had been in jail in Cancun for months before being moved to another prison outside Mexico City.

She has been charged with drug trafficking but hasn't been put on trial yet, however, may face up to 20 years locked up.

Young, who was born in Germany to a British mother and German father, has spent much of her life working abroad as a model and a tour guide, after leaving her hometown of Derby aged 19.

Angela said: "The British consulate went to see her last Wednesday. She is fine now she has a cell to herself. It's much better than the other place.

"Jenny says she gets three meals a day but they are very small portions. She is waiting for the lawyer to see her. She had been calling me before, but didn't say she was in trouble."
