US Republican George Santos Admits Lying on His CV

Newly elected Republican congressman George Santos has apologised after admitting he lied about his education and work experience.

BBC News 28 DEC 2022.

Mr Santos, who was elected in New York, told the New York Post: "My sins here are embellishing my resume. I'm sorry."

He insisted he was "not a criminal" and said that the controversy would not deter him from serving his two-year term in Congress.

The allegation was first made in a New York Times report last week.

At the time, a lawyer for Mr Santos hit back at the claims that he misrepresented where he went to college and his alleged employment history, describing them as "defamatory" and a "shotgun blast of attacks".

He said during his campaign that he had worked at high-profile Wall Street firms Goldman Sachs and Citigroup.

But Mr Santos told the New York Post he had "never worked directly" for either firm, admitting it was a "poor choice of words".

The 34-year-old said he actually worked at a company called Link Bridge, as a vice-president, where he did business with both of the financial giants.

He also admitted that he did not go to college, despite previously claiming to have received a degree from New York City's Baruch College in 2010.

"I didn't graduate from any institution of higher learning. I'm embarrassed and sorry for having embellished my resume," he said. "I own up to that… We do stupid things in life."

Mr Santos, who was elected to Congress on 8 November to represent part of Long Island and Queens, took a seat from the Democrats as the Republicans triumphed overall with a slim majority in the House of Representatives, Congress's lower chamber.

His Democratic opponent, Robert Zimmerman, tweeted that Mr Santos had admitted to being a liar and said he must be held accountable by the Department of Justice for his actions.

In a separate tweet he also suggested that Mr Santos should "resign and run against me in a special election" and "face the voters with your real past".

Mr Santos told the New York Post: "I campaigned talking about the people's concerns, not my resume... I intend to deliver on the promises I made during the campaign."

As things stand, he is set to be sworn in on 3 January, along with the rest of the incoming class of Congress.

George Santos to Step Down From House Committees

Republican congressman George Santos will step down from serving on committees in the US House of Representatives.

BBC 1 FEB 2023

The 34-year-old has faced growing calls to resign after he admitted fabricating parts of his resume and biography since his election in New York last year.

He was assigned to serve on two committees despite the controversy.

He informed colleagues of his decision at a closed-door meeting on Tuesday, the BBC's US partner CBS reports.

Mr Santos said he would step aside temporarily until his name was cleared, and apologised to fellow Republicans for being a "distraction".

"The business of the 118th Congress must continue without media fanfare," he said in a statement on Tuesday.

"It is important that I primarily focus on serving the constituents of New York's Third Congressional District and providing federal level representation without distraction."

The move means Mr Santos will not sit on the small business committee or the science, space and technology panel. The latter oversees non-defence issues related to scientific research and development.

He had previously billed himself as "the full embodiment of the American dream" - an openly gay child of Brazilian immigrants who rose to the upper echelons of Wall Street before entering the world of politics.

But following his election in the November midterms, Mr Santos' life story began to unravel after various US news outlets uncovered a series of falsehoods.

He eventually admitted that large portions of the biography he had shared with voters were untrue. He is also facing multiple investigations over his campaign spending and financial reports.

Several fellow Republicans said they agreed with Mr Santos' decision to remove himself from the assignments.

"Without the ethics investigation being complete, I think it's the right decision," New York Republican Michael Lawler told the Washington Post. Mr Lawler had previously called on Mr Santos to resign.

It comes one day after a meeting on Capitol Hill between Mr Santos and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in which - according to Mr McCarthy - Mr Santos asked if he could remove himself from the committees. Mr McCarthy also told reporters that "he [Santos] could clear everything up".

The top ranking House Republican had previously declined to take any action against Mr Santos. In a televised interview with CBS on Sunday, he said Mr Santos had a right to serve on committees.

Last week, two New York Democratic Representatives - Gregory Meeks and Joe Morelle - wrote a letter to Mr McCarthy in which they said the "serious concerns" raised by the allegations warranted blocking Mr Santos from having access to classified information.

"The numerous concerning allegations about his behaviour over decades put his character into question, and suggest he cannot be trusted," they wrote.

A Newsday/Siena poll published on Tuesday showed that a vast majority - 78% - of voters in Mr Santos's district wanted him to resign, including 71% of Republicans.

George Santos: Republican Congressman Facing Criminal Charges in Federal Probe

George Santos, a beleaguered Republican member of the US Congress, is facing criminal charges in a federal probe, the BBC's US partner CBS News reports.

BBC News 10 MAY 2023

The New York congressman is under scrutiny in multiple jurisdictions over alleged financial misdeeds, lies about his biography and other complaints.

Federal prosecutors have not yet revealed the exact nature of the charges against him.

He is expected to appear in federal court as early as Wednesday morning.

The congressman's office could not be reached for immediate comment on Tuesday.

CBS News previously reported that a federal probe into Mr Santos has focused on finances and financial disclosures.

Multiple sources told CBS he is expected to turn himself in and be arraigned on Wednesday morning at the federal district courthouse in Central Islip, New York.

A freshman lawmaker elected to the US House of Representatives last November, Mr Santos, 34, has been embroiled in scandal since he took office.

He has faced a series of allegations, including being accused of lying about his college degrees and his work experience; violating campaign finance and conflict of interest laws; falsely claiming his grandparents survived the Holocaust; and creating a fake animal charity he used to siphon away cash meant for an veteran's dying dog.

Mr Santos has admitted "embellishing" his biography, but denied the more serious claims including theft allegations.

Some of his Republican colleagues have joined calls for him to resign.

But Mr Santos, who represents a New York district that includes parts of Long Island and Queens, has filed paperwork to run for another two-year term.

He did step down from serving on two committees in the House of Representatives in February and apologised to fellow Republicans for being a "distraction".

It is likely the still-to-be-revealed charges will renew pressure on Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to take action against Mr Santos.

The top ranking House Republican has so far resisted calls to do more to punish the lawmaker.

Asked by CNN about Mr Santos, Mr McCarthy said on Tuesday he would "look at the charges".

Other Republicans were not as accommodating, with Rep Nicole Malliotakis telling the network she "would love to see someone new run" in the district.
