A UK island is so littered with bones, skulls and teeth it has been nicknamed 'Deadman's Island' - and visitors are banned.

The remains of humans are strewn across the ground on the tiny piece of land off the coast of Kent.

More than 200 years ago the land found in the River Medway was used as a burial ground for criminals who had died aboard prison ships bound for Australia.

Floating prisons were filled with criminals whose destination was likely to be an early grave as they awaited transport to face the death penalty Down Under.

The remains of the men and boys who died in the prison ships had originally been enclosed in simple wooden coffins, but coastal erosion and centuries of decay have led to the remains of the unfortunate souls being unearthed from their unmarked graves.

KentLive reports that rising sea levels and coastal erosion have led to the bones and remains of coffins raising from the 6ft of mud that used to cover the dead.

The island, location opposite Queenborough in Sheppey, was visited for a BBC Inside Out programme in 2017 where presenters and TV teams were horrified by the gruesome discoveries.

Director Sam Supple previously told the Sun: “It is like being on the set of a horror film.

“It looks so surreal, it’s like an art department has designed it. There are open coffins and bones everywhere.”

While Inside Out presenter Natalie Graham added: “What I saw there will stay with me forever.

“This is a really strange sight. I would imagine there can’t be anywhere on earth like this.”

Despite the grisly scenes, Mr Supple and Ms Graham are quite privileged to have been able to walk on the island.

The island, which is described as a 1200 meter by 200 meter area of marshland, is owned by Natural England and the public are banned from walking on it.

The island is a conservation area and was deemed a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the rare bids that breed and nest there.

However, local legends suggest “hounds with glaring-red eyes that ate the heads of buried bodies” stalk the land.

While KentLive report 'Coffin Bay' greets anyone who enters it “with open coffins accompanied by scattered remains along its banks.”
