19 Trapped in Gold Mine After Landslide at Mine in Indonesia
Rescue efforts ongoing for 19 missing after landslide at gold mine in Indonesia AP 22 MAY 2025 https://cdn4.premiumread.com/?url=ht...0&q=100&f=webp https://media2.s-nbcnews.com/j/newsc...p-1200-630.jpg https://moneystreetnews.com/wp-conte...-LANDSLIDE.jpg https://i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/article...-LANDSLIDE.jpg Rescue teams in Indonesia have launched a search for 19 people missing after a landslide struck a small gold mine in Papua Province, eastern Indonesia, following two days of heavy rainfall. Indonesias National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure said that heavy rains caused a landslide at a small mine operated by local residents in the Arfak Mountains of West Papua Province. The Agency added that the landslide last Friday hit temporary shelters used by miners, killing at least one person and injuring four others. Yet, 19 other people remain missing and are being searched for. Small scale and illegal mining activities frequently lead to accidents in Indonesia, where mineral resources are located in remote areas under conditions that authorities struggle to regulate. In the same context, at least 15 people were killed in the collapse of an unlicensed gold mine in West Sumatra Province in September 2024. |
