The Scottish National Party leader is expected to make the announcement at a hastily-arranged news conference in Edinburgh.

It is not clear exactly when she will leave office.

Ms Sturgeon has been first minister since November 2014, when she took over from Alex Salmond following the independence referendum.

She went on to become the country's longest-serving first minister.

Nicola Sturgeons’ husband Peter Murrell has been released without charge pending further investigation, Police Scotland said, after he was arrested earlier on Wednesday as part of a probe into the party’s finances.

Detectives sealed off Mr Murrells Glasgow home to search the property and also visited the SNP's headquarters in Edinburgh.

Police Scotland had confirmed a 58-year-old man was being held in custody in connection with an investigation into the funding and finances of the party.

Eyewitnesses told The Telegraph that Ms Sturgeon was not at her property on the outskirts of Glasgow when police arrived. The former First Minister was seen leaving her home in a black coloured Volvo.

In an update on Wednesday evening, Police Scotland said: "A 58-year-old man who was arrested as a suspect earlier today, Wednesday, 5 April 2023, in connection with the ongoing investigation into the funding and finances of the Scottish National Party, has been released without charge pending further investigation.

"The man was questioned by Police Scotland detectives after he was arrested at 7.45am. He was released from custody at 6.57pm.

"Officers also carried out searches today at a number of addresses as part of the investigation.

"A report will be sent to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service."
