ISIS Bride Lisa Smith Arrested Moments After Landing in Ireland With Daughter

Lisa Smith, 38, originally from Dundalk in Co Louth, Ireland, was arrested as she landed with her two-year-old daughter at Dublin Airport - four years after she became radicalised and went to live in Syria

Daily Mirror UK, 1 DEC 2019.

ISIS bride Lisa Smith has been arrested on suspicion of terror offences - minutes after she arrived in Ireland.

The 38-year-old was detained by police after landing at Dublin Airport this morning.

Ms Smith, originally from Dundalk in Co Louth, Ireland, and her two-year-old daughter, disembarked from the aircraft at around 10.30am, where police were waiting.

Images of her arrival show Ms Smith covered in a pink blanket as she was taken from the aircraft.

Her daughter is being cared for by her family in Ireland while Ms Smith is questioned at a Dublin police station.

The mum was deported from Turkey early on Sunday and put on the first scheduled Turkish Airlines flight to to the Irish capital.

The former member of the Irish military, who once accompanied an ex-president and leader of Ireland on foreign trips as a member of the Defence Forces, had been living in a Syrian refugee camp.

She went to the war-torn Middle Eastern country in 2015 after converting to Islam and becoming radicalised.

Irish police said: "Today, Sunday 1st December 2019, at Dublin Airport, An Garda Siochana has arrested an Irish Citizen (38 year old female) on suspicion of terrorist offences following her deportation from Turkey.

She had been living in a Syrian refugee camp with her daughter

"She is currently being detained at a South Dublin Garda station under the provisions of Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act, 1939 as amended.

"A child, also an Irish citizen, was in the company of the female and is now being cared for by relatives."

Ms Smith has denied being involved in violence.

Irish broadcaster RTE said she was accompanied by three consular officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs, members of the Army Ranger Wing, and a Turkish security officer on the flight.

She was not in custody for the four-and-a-half-hour journey but Irish police were waiting at Dublin airport for the plane's arrival.

She was transported in a dark-coloured van to a police station in Dublin.
Her daughter was born in Syria but is an Irish citizen.

Ms Smith has said the father of her child was a suspected member of IS who died last year.

She held a relatively lowly role in the Defence Forces but worked on the official Irish Government jet.

She accompanied former president Mary Robinson and then Taoiseach Bertie Ahern on journeys.

Significant numbers of Europeans left for Syria to fight for and against IS during a bloody war which destroyed the Middle Eastern country and produced millions of refugees.

Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said Ms Smith should have the right of return to Ireland and that removing her citizenship would not be right or compassionate.

She is being questioned by police

Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan said: "This is a sensitive case and I want to reassure people that all relevant State agencies are closely involved.

"A multi-agency network is in place here comprising agency personnel who engage on an ongoing basis with international colleagues regarding emerging practice in relation to the complex issue of radicalisation.

"This network will co-ordinate engagement on a case by case basis as and when appropriate."

In Britain, captured British Islamic State fighters will be brought back to the UK to be put on trial if it is the best place for them to face justice, the national security adviser has said.

Shamima Begum, the Bethnal Green schoolgirl who fled to Syria to join IS in 2015, was stripped of her British citizenship by then-home secretary Sajid Javid, prompting her to take legal action against the UK.

Her daughter is being cared for by relatives

Ms Begum claims she married Dutch convert Yago Riedijk 10 days after arriving in IS territory.

She told The Times that she left Raqqa in January 2017 with her husband but her children, a one-year-old girl and a three-month-old boy, had both since died.
Her third child died shortly after he was born.

Shamima Begum: Spy For Canada Smuggled Schoolgirl to Syria

Files seen by the BBC show he claimed to have shared Ms Begum's passport details with Canada, and smuggled other Britons to fight for IS.

BBC News 31 AUG 2022

Shamima Begum, who fled the UK and joined the Islamic State group, was smuggled into Syria by an intelligence agent for Canada.

Ms Begum's lawyers are challenging the removal of her citizenship, arguing she was a trafficking victim.

Canada and the UK declined to comment on security issues.

Ms Begum was 15 when she and two other east London schoolgirls - Kadiza Sultana, 16, and 15-year-old Amira Abase - travelled to Syria to join the IS group in 2015.

At the main Istanbul bus station, the girls met Mohammed Al Rasheed, who would facilitate their journey to IS-controlled Syria.

A senior intelligence officer, at an agency which is part of the global coalition against IS, has confirmed to the BBC that Rasheed was providing information to Canadian intelligence while smuggling people to IS.

The BBC has obtained a dossier on Rasheed that contains information gathered by law enforcement and intelligence, as well as material recovered from his hard drives, which provide extraordinary detail about how he operated.

He told authorities that he had gathered information on the people he helped into Syria because he was passing it to the Canadian embassy in Jordan.

----Shamima Begum cannot return to UK, court rules

Rasheed, who was arrested in Turkey within days of smuggling Ms Begum to IS, told authorities he had shared a photo of the passport the British schoolgirl was using.

The Metropolitan Police were searching for her, although by the time Canada received her passport details, Ms Begum was already in Syria.

The dossier shows that Ms Begum was moved to Syria through a substantial IS people-smuggling network that was controlled from the group's de-facto capital in Raqqa.

Rasheed was in charge of the Turkish side of this network and facilitated the travel of British men, women and children to IS for at least eight months before he helped Ms Begum and her two friends.

Ms Begum told the BBC's forthcoming I'm Not A Monster podcast: "He organised the entire trip from Turkey to Syria… I don't think anyone would have been able to make it to Syria without the help of smugglers.

"He had helped a lot of people come in… We were just doing everything he was telling us to do because he knew everything, we didn't know anything."

Rasheed kept information about the people he helped, often photographing their ID documents or secretly filming them on his phone.

One recording shows Ms Begum and her friends get out of a taxi and into a waiting car not far from the Syrian border.

Rasheed also gathered information about IS, mapping the locations of the homes of Western IS fighters in Syria, identifying IP addresses and locations of internet cafes in IS-controlled territory, and taking screenshots of conversations he was having with IS fighters.

In one conversation, Rasheed spoke to a man believed to be notorious British IS fighter and recruiter, Raphael Hostey, who says to him: "I need you to work under me. Officially… I want you to help us bring people in."

In a follow-up text, Rasheed asks Hostey: "Can you explain a little, please?"

Hostey says: "Same thing that you're doing now, but you work for us bringing equipment, bringing in brothers and sisters". Mohammed Al Rasheed replies: "I am ready, brother."

Rasheed was arrested in the Turkish city of Sanliurfa not long after he had facilitated the girl's journey to Syria.

In a statement to law enforcement, he said that the reason he had gathered information on everyone he had helped, including Shamima, was because "I was passing this information to the Canadian embassy in Jordan".

Rasheed said that in 2013 he had gone to the Canadian Embassy in Jordan to try to apply for asylum. He said: "They told me they were going to grant me my Canadian citizenship if I collect information about the activities of ISIS."

The BBC has been able to confirm that Rasheed passed in and out of Jordan multiple times between 2013 and his arrest in 2015.

Tasnime Akunjee, the lawyer for the Begum family, said there will be a legal hearing in November to challenge the removal of Ms Begum's citizenship and "one of the main arguments" will be that then-Home Secretary Sajid Javid did not consider that she was a victim of trafficking.

"The UK has international obligations as to how we view a trafficked person and what culpability we prescribe to them for their actions," he said.

Mr Akunjee said it was "shocking" that a Canadian intelligence asset was a key part of the smuggling operation - "someone who is supposed to be an ally, protecting our people, rather than trafficking British children into a war zone".

"Intelligence-gathering looks to have been prioritised over the lives of children," he said.

Shamima Begum is now held in a detention camp in north-east Syria, her citizenship was taken away in 2019 after she emerged from the ashes of the so-called IS caliphate.

A Canadian Security Intelligence Service spokesman said he could not "publicly comment on or confirm or deny the specifics of CSIS investigations, operational interests, methodologies or activities".

A British government spokesperson said: "It is our long-standing policy that we do not comment on operational intelligence or security matters."

Shamima Begum Was 'Trafficked' as ISIS 'Sex Slave' and Should Return to UK - Lawyers

Shamima Begum, the LONDON schoolgirl who fled to Syria to join her ISIS boyfriend in 2015, was stripped of her British citizenship by then-home secretary Sajid Javid, prompting her to take legal action

'Should Begum Face Justice Over Here?' - YES YES YES

Shamima Begum is challenging the Home Office's decision to remove her citizenship, facing a five-day hearing at the Special Immigration Appeals Commission as she claims she was trafficked to Syria

BBC News 22 NOV 2022.

A lawyer said Begum was recruited and exploited by ISIS

Begum lost her British citizenship after joining the Islamic State group in Syria

Shamima Begum was a child trafficking victim and should be allowed to return to the UK, lawyers said in court today.

Ms Begum was 15 when she and two other schoolgirls travelled from east London to Syria to join the so-called Islamic State group in February 2015.

Her British citizenship was revoked on national security grounds shortly after she was found, nine months pregnant, in a Syrian refugee camp in February 2019.

Ms Begum, now 23, is challenging the Home Office's decision to remove her British citizenship, with her lawyers arguing that the Home Office had a legal duty to investigate whether Ms Begum was a victim of trafficking when her citizenship was revoked.

At the start of a five-day hearing at the Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC) today, Samantha Knights KC, for Ms Begum, said: "This case concerns a British child aged 15 who was persuaded, influenced and affected with her friends by a determined and effective Isis propaganda machine."

In written submissions, Ms Knights said there was "overwhelming" evidence that Ms Begum had been "recruited, transported, transferred, harboured and received in Syria for the purposes of 'sexual exploitation' and 'marriage' to an adult male".

"She was following a well-known pattern by which Isis cynically recruited and groomed female children, as young as 14, so that they could be offered as 'wives' to adult men," the barrister added.

Her lawyers said that the Home Office deprived Ms Begum of her citizenship "without seeking to investigate and determine, still less consider, whether she was a child victim of trafficking, and whether there were failures by public authorities in the UK to prevent her being trafficked".

Ms Knights continued: "What evidence is available shows that rather than viewing the appellant as a victim, a child that was manipulated and exploited, the Home Secretary proceeded on the basis that she acted 'voluntarily' in travelling to Syria and aligning with Isis."

Ms Begum's lawyers argued that the Home Office has unlawfully failed to consider that she travelled to Syria and remained there "as a victim of child trafficking".

ISIS

Ms Knights later told the court that the then-home secretary Sajid Javid was "over-hasty" in depriving Ms Begum of her citizenship, describing it as "effectively an exile for life".

Ms Begum is also challenging the removal of her British citizenship on the grounds that it made her "de facto stateless" and that the decision was predetermined.

Sir James Eadie KC, for the Home Office, said in written submissions that the Security Services "continue to assess that Ms Begum poses a risk to national security".

"This is a case about national security," he said, later adding: "This is not a case about trafficking."

Sir James said that Ms Begum "travelled, aligned and stayed in Syria for four years" and that she only left IS-controlled territory for safety reasons "and not because of a genuine disengagement from the group".
